“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein

Yes, last year was difficult for all of us. Just like every other non-profit organization, and too many businesses and individuals, the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation lost money. We lost (temporarily, I hope) a few of our major donors, and other major donors had to cut back on their giving. Our assets fell from $1.6 million to $1.3 million. Our program funding had to be cut.

But the 4-H Foundation has much to be grateful for from the past fiscal year, as so many of you took the opportunity to continue to support 4-H. Thanks to some very smart investment decisions made early by the UW Foundation, which manages all of our investments, our losses were not as bad as so many other non-profits. Our corporate donors still partnered with us, especially Rural Mutual Insurance Company and United FCS who stepped up with full funding for the year. Our two golf events continued to do well. Your response to our spring direct mail appeal was very generous, helping us to reduce our losses by $20,000.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors and the diligent work of our Board, the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation had a better year than we might have. Your dedication to 4-H helped us to continue providing funds to Wisconsin 4-H – funds that ensured every youth could afford to participate and every volunteer was provided training and taught resources.

I invite you to continue to partner with 4-H. More so than ever, every gift is important and valued. I deeply appreciate your past support of 4-H and hope we can continue to stand together for the good of this organization we all love and respect.

Patricia Harrington, Executive Director Wisconsin 4-H Foundation

Yes! I want to be a Wisconsin 4-H donor.Your gift to the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation is tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. Please make your check or money order payable to: 4-H Fund, C/O UW Foundation, and mail to the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation, 428 Lowell Hall, 610 Langdon Street, Madison, WI 53703.

Outreach & International ActivitiesOutreach & International Activities consists of state and national trips for 4-H youth including the State 4-H & Youth Conference, the 4-H National Congress and international exchange programs (formerly IFYE). “After learning about the damage caused to schools by recent Australian wild fires, a young Wisconsin 4-H International Exchange youth helped to organize a drive to buy replacement books for a destroyed school. Her international community service raised over $3,000 for Australian school children.” – Kay Hobler, Outreach Specialist. The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation provides funding for these trips and for training of 4-H volunteer chaperones.

Youth in GovernanceThis program involves youth and adults working together to strengthen organizations, communities and our democratic society. The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation supports this recent initiative by funding several projects and the Youth

in Governance Conference. The 2008 Youth as Partners in Civic Leadership Conference brought together 18 youth-adult teams who then took action in communities: from radio announcements about safe youth relationships in Rhinelander to youth joining community boards in Racine and Montello.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)This new program area is helping to excite youth about the opportunities and activities available in the science, engineering and technology fields. 4-H programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) are engaging and exciting. A participant in a 4-H STEM program said: “Science, math, engineering and technology are more fun and easier when you play with it.” The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation supports this initiative by funding county STEM pilot programs.
