The Guide

Page 4: Wirral - Wales

On 1st April 2003, Health Authorities in Wales were abolishedand 22 Local Health Boards (LHBs) were established. As aLocal Health Board, we are responsible for planning whathealth services our population needs and then commissioninglocal hospitals, family doctors (GPs), Dentists, Pharmacists,Opticians and others to provide services.

The LHB covers exactly the same area as Flintshire CountyCouncil (the Local Authority) and this allows much closerworking between the NHS and the council, which is importantfor planning programmes for health and well-being.

The LHB and Council have a statutory duty to work together, inpartnership with other local organisations such as SocialServices, the Community Health Council and voluntaryservices, to produce strategies for improving health, well-beingand social care for the people of Flintshire.

The LHB will also work closely with you to discuss and listen toyour views about changes to local health services.

This booklet has been produced by Flintshire Local HealthBoard as a guide to local health services in the Flintshire area.

It provides you with information on how to access local healthservices such as GPs, Dentists, Pharmacists and Opticians, aswell as contact details for the local hospitals in the area.

It also provides you with information on how you can shareyour views and help to influence change locally.

Your local hospital will also produce a guide which will giveinformation about outpatient and inpatient services, hospitalfacilities, telephone numbers and discharge arrangements.

NHS Direct Wales is a telephone service, provided by nurses, giving confidential healthcare advice and information 24 hoursa day.

Nurses and Health Information Advisers can advise on what todo if you are ill, you have health concerns about someoneclose to you, or you need information about local healthservices. As well as providing confidential health advice, NHSDirect Wales can also provide information on:

If you have access to the internet, you can find their websiteat: www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk

From sprains to stomach upsets, Pharmacists are qualified togive you expert advice without an appointment. As mostpeople know, antibiotics don’t work on colds and other viralinfections. However, you can get plenty of advice from yourPharmacist about ‘over the counter’ medicines that can help torelieve your symptoms. A full list of Pharmacies in theFlintshire area can be found further on in this booklet.

If you require a Doctor outside normal surgery hours, youshould telephone your practice and an answer phone messagewill direct you to the out of hours service provided.

Most Pharmacies are open for all or part of Saturdays andoperate a rota system for Sundays, Bank Holidays andevenings. Your local Pharmacy will have a notice in theirwindow directing you to those Pharmacies available duringthese periods, alternatively, contact NHS Direct Walesinformation. Local newspapers will also have details of thosePharmacies who are open.

Cervical smear tests are carried out as part of a national NHScervical screening programme, which is organised in Wales byCervical Screening Wales.

Cervical screening is not a test for cancer. It detects possibleabnormalities, or changes in the cells, which may develop intocancer if they are not treated. Almost all abnormalitiesdetected by screening are successfully treated.

Invitations for screening are sent out at three-yearly intervalsto all women in Wales between the ages of 20 and 64. You canchoose to have the test done at your own doctor's (GP) clinicor at your local Well Woman or Family Planning Clinic.Telephone numbers of local Well Woman and Family PlanningClinics can be found under the ‘useful telephone numbers’section of this booklet.
