10 Gigabit Ethernet Solution

Turbo charge your network backbone capacity with 10 Gigabit Ethernet

The IEEE 802.3ae 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard was ratified in June

2002. It follows the standard set by previous Ethernet standards in

keeping the media access control layer (MAC) layer separate from the

physical media layer (PHY). Two types of PHY are supported: the LAN-

PHY and the WAN-PHY.

• The LAN-PHY can be used with private fibres such as: single mode

fibre (extended and long haul), multi-mode fibre (short haul) to cover

distances up to 40 kilometres.

• The WAN-PHY can be used with existing SONET/SDH OC-192/

STM- 64 interfaces providing wide area support over metropolitan,

national or even international networks.

Initially the 10 Gigabit standards were specified only on fibre optic

interfaces. But in 2004 the 10GBase-CX standard (IEEE 802.3ak) has

been agreed for using high grade copper cabling originally developed

for the InfiniBand proprietary data centre cabling standard. A standard

for using 10G over Cat. 6a unshielded twisted pair cabling (IEEE

802.3an) has been ratified in 2006.

Why do we need 10 Gigabit Ethernet? The proliferation of multimedia applications combining images, video

and sound means that file sizes greater than 50 Mbytes are not

uncommon. Users expect pictures to appear instantaneously; only

Gigabit Ethernet can guarantee this level of response time.

Figure 1: 10 Gigabit LAN infrastructure

The continuing deployment of high-performance PCs and workstations

is placing an extra strain on the network infrastructure.

While existing Fast Ethernet switches with Gigabit uplinks are fine

for connecting a few PCs and laptops equipped with 100Mbps Fast

Ethernet, they are not appropriate for use in a company deploying

Gigabit-capable PCs, workstations and servers. For these environments

a high-performance Gigabit Ethernet switch with a 10 Gigabit uplink

capability is absolutely necessary to give the required levels of control,

network performance, security and reliability. As the price of the latest

10 Gigabit components inevitably drops, most file servers and data

storages devices will start to support 10 Gigabit trunks. This will allow

even more Gigabit capable PCs and workstations to connect at full

speed as shown in Figure 1.

The 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches can connect directly to storage and

servers and also be used to build a 10Gbps network backbone running

between the main Gigabit switches in the network.

What applications will benefit from 10 Gigabit Ethernet? The main applications for 10 Gigabit Ethernet are:

• Mass Storage

10 Gigabit Ethernet is being used to build both storage area networks

(SANs) and to replace the proprietary network attached storage (NAS)

mechanisms such as FiberChannel, Ultra160 or 320 SCSI. And now

with the completion of the iSCSI protocol as defined by IETF RFC 3720,

iSCSI has the full error recovery feature set required by enterprise

storage managers. iSCSI can provide up to 5 times the performance

of equivalent FiberChannel based SANs for a fraction of the cost.

Plus it has the added advantage of being able to operate over longer

distances than FiberChannel as shown in Figure 2 below.

Figure 2: Storage area network

• Computer interconnect

Clusters of high-speed computers can now be built using low-cost

processor blades to form high-performance computer grids or

meshes. In many academic and government research networks,

10 Gigabit Ethernet is being used to replace the previous proprietary

interconnects such as InfiniBand, Servernet or Myranet.

• Data back-up and disaster recovery

The extra distance support when using single-mode fibre makes 10

Gigabit Ethernet suitable for backing up data between data centres

up to 40 kilometres apart as shown in Figure 3. This makes it viable

for using dark fibre connections between data centres located across

large metropolitan areas.

Managed Switches

Take control of your local area network to streamline performance, protect your data and reduce expensive downtime

Whilst an unmanaged switch is fine for connecting a few PCs and

laptops in a home environment, it is not appropriate for use in a

company network with many PCs and servers. For these environments

a managed switch is essential to give the required levels of control,

network performance, security and reliability. Modern managed

switches can provide all these functions using standard techniques

such as VLANs, Port Trunking, security, prioritization, filtering and

SNMP network management.

VLANs The great thing about Ethernet is that it is plug-and-play. Just plug the

devices into a switch and they will find each other and start talking to

each other. The downside of this is that PCs and workstations attached to

Ethernet become very chatty and broadcast a lot of messages to every

device connected to the switch. For a 4-port switch this is not a problem

but once you connect 40, 400 or 4000 devices, the amount of broadcast

traffic can start to seriously slow down and degrade the network.

To cut down on the amount of broadcast traffic you can create Virtual

LANs (or VLANs for short) which operate as separate broadcast

domains. This means that members of a VLAN can only talk directly

to other members of the VLAN as shown in Figure 1. If members of

different VLANs need to communicate, then a router is required. A

router uses Layer 3 IP addresses to forward packets to the correct

destination. Some modern Ethernet switches combine these two

functions in the same device which is known as a Layer 3 switch.

Figure 1: Ethernet VLAN switching

Management of VLANs can be simplified by using the GVRP and

IEEE 802.1s/v protocols which provide dynamic VLAN registration and

per VLAN spanning tree protocol support.

Port TrunkingWhen large numbers of network-users need to access shared resources

such as file servers or database storage, the connection to the server

or storage device can become a bottleneck. For instance, it only takes

10 PCs with 100Mbps connections performing transfers to and from a

shared file server to saturate a 1Gbps connection to the server.

The solution is to use Port Trunking or Link Aggregation Control

Protocol (LACP) to bundle multiple connections and use the combined

bandwidth as if it were a single fat pipe. In the example shown in Figure

2, up to 80 users can perform simultaneous 100Mbps transfers or 8

power users can transfer at 1Gbps to 2 servers which are quad linked

with 4 x 1Gbps connections.

Figure 2: Ethernet Trunking

Traffic prioritization, rate limiting & filteringGigabit Ethernet allows you to support more users and more data

intensive applications. But the traffic that they each generate does

not have the same characteristics. For instance, Voice over IP traffic

(VoIP) is not heavy volume but must be delivered fast and predictably

to prevent break-up of the voice patterns. File transfer is the exact

opposite: it generates high data volumes but the speed of delivery

of the traffic is not critical; it does not matter if packets arrive at

uneven intervals as long as they all arrive. Video streaming is both

high volume and time-sensitive so it must be delivered at the right rate

to prevent the pictures displayed from breaking up. For these reasons,

the switching devices must be able to recognize different traffic

types and give each the appropriate Quality of Service required. For

instance, in the example in Figure 3, a network has a mixture of VoIP

traffic (green), regular file transfer traffic (orange), video streaming

(blue) and background broadcast traffic (red).

Figure 3: Traffic prioritization

The Gigabit Ethernet trunk between the two switches would become a

bottleneck if one type of traffic was allowed to dominate the link. This

could reduce the quality of the voice or video traffic. By assigning priority

classes for each type of traffic, the switches are able to ensure that:

• VoIP traffic is always given the highest priority and is transmitted

before anything else.

• Video traffic is given priority but is also rate limited to ensure that

the video streams do not swamp the receiver and are delivered at

the rate required.

• Normal file transfer is given a lower priority and is processed on

a best effort basis.

• Broadcast traffic is given the lowest priority and may be dropped

if the available bandwidth is not enough.

Managed Switches

SMC’s TigerSwitch™ 6100 family gives you high port density and

scalability without turning network management into a hassle. IP

Clustering lets you administer up to 32 6100 or 8100 switches as a

single entity rather than as multiple boxes, giving you more simplicity,

flexibility and scalability. In locations with limited or no power sockets

available, the integrated Power over Ethernet option (SMC6128PL2,

SMC6152PL2, SMC8126PL2-F and SMC8124PL2 only) allows you to

provide power through the network cables to downstream devices

such as wireless Access Points, IP cameras and VoIP phones. The

TigerSwitch™ 6100 family supports all the traffic management and

security features that you would expect from fully managed switches.

VDSL2 Solution

Maximise your revenue potential with new broadband services

These days most business travellers on the move require access to

email as a basic hotel requirement; just like room service. Up until

now they have struggled with dial-up modems, different types of hotel

telephones and busy hotel telephone switchboards. And once they

managed to overcome all these difficulties, they could look forward to

a hefty telephone bill in the morning. VDSL technology solves these

problems. Although it operates over the room’s telephone line, it allows

voice and data to be shared at the same time. That way the telephone

is not tied up in the guest’s room, and more importantly to the hotel

owner, it doesn’t clog up vital lines on the switchboard. VDSL is not

limited to the speed of the phone line either, and can operate at speeds

normally only seen on Ethernet local area networks. All you need is

a connection to the Internet and some extra equipment to share the

room telephone lines as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: VDSL solution for hotels

VDSL also offers additional revenue opportunities.

You can offer in-house services such as:

• High-speed Internet Access

• Wireless hotspots in lounge areas and conference rooms

• Video on Demand with high definition quality

• Local adverts such as restaurants, theatres and travel bookings

• Online concierge services e.g. taxi ordering, restaurant booking etc.

• Hotel services such as bill checking and paying

• Local document printing and business services

What is VDSL?VDSL stands for “Very high bit rate Digital Subscriber Line”. In layman’s

terms that translates to a broadband link over a telephone line at

incredibly fast speeds. VDSL is part of the family of Digital Subscriber

Line technologies which operate over normal telephone wiring. The

main types are shown in Table 1.

DSL variant ADSL2+ SHDSL VDSL VDSL2

Max. Downstream 24Mbps 2.3Mbps 15Mbps 100Mbps

Max. Upstream 1Mbps 2.3Mbps 15Mbps 100Mbps

Max. distance 5 km 4 km 1.5 km 1.5 km

Table 1: DSL technologies

ADSL2+ is now used by the majority of telephone broadband

subscribers. It runs at downstream speeds up to 24 Megabits per

second (Mbps) and upstream speed of 1Mbps. There are higher

upstream speed variants in the DSL family such as SHDSL which can

run at up to 2.3Mbps but only over shorter distances and through good

quality wiring. VDSL2 provides Internet connections of up to 100Mbps

symmetric, or an asymmetric 100Mbps downstream and 50Mbps

upstream over 200 meters. Cable distances also can run up to 1.5 km

at lower transmission rates.

How does VDSL work? All types of DSL technologies operate over the existing copper

telephone cabling. They use higher frequencies over the copper wire

to introduce data signals without interfering with the lower frequency

voice signal. The speed achievable is dependent on the distance from

the local exchanges and the quality of the copper wiring. This is why

the availability of ADSL for telephone subscribers is dependent on

how far away they are from the local telephone exchange. But VDSL

does not have these restrictions. Since it operates only over the in-

building wiring, it is not limited by distance as long as the wiring does

not extend more than 1.5 kilometres. To install VDSL in an existing

building, three new pieces of equipment are required:

1. A VDSL Switch which connects to the external Internet connection

and also any local data servers

2. A VDSL Splitter which combines the data signals with the voice

signals from the telephone exchange or PBX

3. Customer premise VDSL modems which split the voice and data

signals to the customer’s telephone and local computers.

These components are shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: How VDSL works

SMC7816M/VSW VDSL2 Switch with built-in SplitterThe VDSL2 switch with built-in splitter SMC7816M/VSW combines both

the data and phone signals coming from your Internet and telephone

service providers, and passes these signals directly over standard

telephone wiring to multiple users in the same building. The switch

supports up to 16 VDSL2 lines. The VDSL switch is typically located in a

wiring closet or other central location of a multi-dwelling/multi-tenant

unit, campus or enterprise.

SMC7800A/VCP VDSL2 CPEThe CPE SMC7800A/VCP at the other end of the VDSL line is used to

separate the voice and data signals from the combined VDSL signal at

the customers premise in their room or office. It connects to any PC

or laptop equipped with a 10/100BASE-TX network interface card. An

existing telephone, modem, or fax machine simply plugs into the CPE’s

phone port. There is no need for special additional equipment such

as terminators or filters. In fact, there is no need to modify the wiring

at all. Since the VDSL connection is based on Ethernet, no further

complex software configurations are required.

IP Surveillance Solution

Build cost-effective and scalable video surveillance solutions using flexible and reliable IP components that integrate with your current network infrastructure

The Video Surveillance MarketIP Video surveillance has been with us since the 1970s and we are all now

used to the idea and understand the benefits that it brings. Advances

in digital camera technology mean that many new applications are

now feasible. Features such as: motion detection, sound and heat

activation, advanced pattern recognition and low light operation,

all allow new intelligent applications to be developed. What’s more,

with the use of industry standard components and advanced digital

circuitry, the price of the components is falling drastically making a

video surveillance application feasible for smaller companies or even

for domestic applications in the home.

Transportation SolutionsWith the ever-increasing need for security to reduce the problems

associated with traffic congestion, IP Video Surveillance allows traffic

arriving at transportation hubs such as airports, bus terminals and

railway stations to be continuously monitored. This permits operators

to respond quickly to traffic build-up or to notify security of any

suspicious items, vehicles or people.

Retail/Commercial SolutionsIn retail or commercial environments, IP Video Surveillance can be

used to extend an existing analogue or hybrid analogue systems. For

instance, a shop which has existing analogue or hybrid equipment

that it uses for security, can add new Wireless IP Cameras to provide

activity analysis.

As shown in Figure 2 above, the existing analogue/hybrid equipment

can still be used and the video it generates encoded into MPEG-4

format so that it is available to the PC monitoring stations. The new

wired or wireless IP cameras can be connected directly to the Ethernet

network without the need to throw out any existing equipment.

This can provide an extremely scalable and cost effective solution.

Unlike existing analogue switching equipment, which can only control

cameras in banks of up to sixteen channels, IP cameras can be added

as required without the need to add extra encoders/decoders.

Domestic SolutionsIn the home, video surveillance is now becoming affordable for providing

security applications such as remote monitoring while on vacation and

keeping an eye on the kids while at work. The wide availability of high-

speed always-on broadband connections has enabled this new market.

In fact some larger broadband service providers are starting to offer IP

surveillance as an enhanced feature of their broadband service.

Wireless OperationThe use of standard Ethernet as the transmission technology means

that wireless technologies based on IEEE 802.11 can be introduced. Many

cameras come with a built-in Wi-Fi radio so that they can be located in

places where Ethernet cabling is not available or not feasible.

Remote MonitoringWith analogue video systems, all monitoring equipment must be

located adjacent to the video encoders and decoders. With a pure

digital recording system, this restriction no longer applies and the

video stream can by viewed from any PC with an IP network connection

to the control centre.

IP Cameras

For small businesses, video surveillance is now becoming affordable

for providing remote monitoring. IP network camera systems are more

flexible and less expensive than traditional video systems. They allow

cost-effective video surveillance and remote monitoring solutions

using flexible and reliable IP networking components that integrate

seamlessly in the existing home network. Videos and audio can be

Wireless Bridging SolutionConnect your local area networks at a fraction of the cost of private or public circuits

Wireless networks are popular. They are enabling new flexible ways

of working and conducting business that were not possible before.

Not only can people work where they want, but the critical business

data does not have to be located in the same building to be viewed or

updated. Central shared resources such as file servers, print servers

and databases can be located in a secure central building. With

wireless bridging, there is no need for expensive cabling or costly fixed

telecommunications links.

A business case for wireless bridgingIn this example, a company wishes to connect three buildings on

a campus or business park. The buildings are approximately 0.5

kilometers apart as shown in Figure 1 below.

Figure 1: Campus or Business Park

If the company owns the land or can negotiate rights-of-way from the

landowner, then it may be possible to dig a trench and bury cables

between the buildings. Since the distance is over 100 meters, it would

be necessary to use fiber optic cables, as unshielded twisted pair

cables will not operate at this distance as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Private circuit solution

Once installed, this network would not incur any monthly costs and

would be able to operate at 100Mbps or even upgraded to 1 or 10Gbps.

But getting the right permissions and performing the digging and

cable laying work could take a long time. Also, it is not always possible

to successfully negotiate digging rights-of-way especially if there are

public roads or footpaths in the way.

In this case, the alternative would be to lease fixed line services from

a local telecommunications company and connect the sites together

using the leased lines as shown in Figure 3 below.

Figure 3: Leased line solution

This solution has similar set-up costs to the private circuit but incurs

addition annual costs of the same magnitude. The link is also limited

to 2Mbps. Higher bandwidth links are available (e.g. 34Mbps) but the

annual rental cost for the same solution with 34Mbps instead of 2Mbps

would be even higher and would require more expensive routers at

each site to terminate the circuits.

A much more efficient and cost-effective solution can be implemented

using Wireless Bridging if the buildings have a line of sight between

them. Using an external antenna on each building, an 11Mbps, 54Mbps

connection can be implemented between the three buildings and

connected to the local network inside each building as shown in Figure

4 below.

Figure 4: Wireless bridging solution

The Wireless Bridging solution is approximately one sixth of the

installation costs of the private circuit or leased line solution.

Moreover, compared to the annual costs of the leased line solution, it

is one sixtieth of the costs to run. It can also be upgraded from 11Mbps

to 54Mbps for higher speed.

High-speed Wireless SolutionNew wireless standards give higher performance and wider range to make wireless suitable for high-bandwidth, time-sensitive applications such as video and voice streamingWireless is now widely used in home and offices where it provides low-

cost, flexible networking without the need for expensive or intrusive

cabling systems. It is typically used for allowing personal computers

and laptops to access network resources from anywhere in the house

or office without the need for unsightly cables. Outside the home or

office it is widely supported in public wireless hotspots such as airports,

hotels, transportation hubs and cafes where traveling business users

can access their email and office systems while on the move.

Since their introduction over ten years ago, wireless networks have

revolutionized the way we work and play. Their simplicity and flexibility

have made them both ideal for home environments and small offices where

expensive cabling is not an option. However, their speed and performance

has always been inferior to their wired Ethernet counterparts. But a new

wireless standard based on MIMO technology (Multiple-Input Multiple-

Output) is being developed which will dramatically improve both the

performance and range of wireless networks.

Table 1: wireless LAN standards evolution (source: Atheros)

IEEE 802.11n wireless devices enable new applications which though

feasible, were susceptible to disruption and disturbance without new

high-speed wireless technologies. The initial deployment of these

devices is likely to happen with the upgrading of wireless access points

to achieve more efficient transmission rates and better coverage.

Following this, power users using multimedia applications for instance,

can upgrade their wireless adapters to use multiple antennae and reap

the full benefits of IEEE 802.11n.

MIMO

MIMO stands for “Multiple Input Multiple Output” and is an established

wireless technology which was originally developed for use in point-

to-point microwave links and that is now being introduced to the

wireless LAN market. It greatly improves the reliability, range and

robustness of radio connections. When used in wireless LAN, it allows

users to increase the achievable bandwidth in wireless communication

solutions significantly.

The next evolutionary step in wireless LAN standards (IEEE 802.11n) is

based on MIMO technology and allow data rates of 300Mbps or even

higher by transmitting parallel radio streams in the same frequency

spectrum. These techniques are referred to as Spatial Multiplexing

and will allow multiple radio streams to be sent over the same radio

channel, effectively doubling or even tripling the throughput. Spatial

Multiplexing fundamentally changes the format of signals and

therefore requires a new standard (IEEE 802.11n) for standards-based

operation. The final standard proposal for IEEE 802.11n was agreed

in 2009. However, the Wi-Fi Alliance already started it’s certification

program based on draft 2.0 of the IEEE802.11n standard, ensuring cross

vendor interoperability between certified products in 2007.

Audio and Video StreamingIn the home, the success of services such as Apple’s iTunes® and

Microsoft MediaCenter™ together with the popularity of music

streaming are turning home computers into true media entertainment

centers. In this role they are ideal for streaming videos using MPEG-4

encoding standards. High speed wireless means that music and films

can be enjoyed anywhere in the house instead of only in the room

containing the computer and broadband connection as shown in

Figure 1.

Figure 1: Audio and video streaming

Office Voice StreamingIn the office environment, high-speed wireless can be used not only

to improve the performance and reliability but also to increase the

reachable range of wireless devices. Improved performance and

reliability means that new applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP)

within the office can drastically reduce the costs of using phones

both for landlines and mobile phones as shown in Figure 2. With a

Wi-Fi enabled phone, such calls can be routed over the local wireless

and wired LAN ensuring such calls are free.

Figure 2: Office voice streaming

The increased range of MIMO based high-speed wireless devices

means that more parts of the building can be reached without the

need for extra access points or wireless repeaters. For offices this

means cost savings due to the reduction in the number of access

points; for home users this means that dead spots in the house can be

virtually eliminated.

Broadband Access SolutionImprove business productivity and reduce telecommunication costs by enabling innovative home and remote working solutions using broadband for both voice and dataBroadband access can be used to enable a variety of remote office

solutions. The basic configuration offers the traditional “office in

a box” solution which provides a complete home or remote office

network to connect one or more PCs, printers and servers. Closer

integration with the corporate network can be implemented by using

a secure Virtual Private Network solution. Similarly, integration with

the corporate telephone network can be achieved with an Internet

telephony or VoIP solution.

Office in a boxSMC’s “office-in-a-box” solutions provide all the features needed to

set up a remote or home office. These features are shown in Figure 1

and include:

• Built-in ADSL modem or external connection to existing

ADSL/Cable modem

• Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet switch for desktop connections

• Optional wireless support for flexible connections throughout

the premises

• Optional print server support to allow all devices to share

a local printer

• Built-in Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall and VPN pass-

through support for secure access into the corporate network

Figure 1: “Office-in-a-box” solution

Virtual Private NetworkThe “office-in-a-box” solution is fine for workers needing Internet

access for web and email. If access to company shared resources at

a central location is required, then a Virtual Private Network or VPN

solution would be more appropriate. A VPN allows company resources

such as file servers, print servers and mail servers to be accessed over

the Internet using secure encrypted tunnels as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Virtual Private Network solution

The VPN tunnels start and end at firewalls located at each premise.

The firewalls may be standalone boxes or integrated into routers. VPN

client software can be installed on PCs and laptops so that the VPN

can be accessed anywhere with an Internet connection.

Access to specific company resources such as file servers and email

systems allows remote or mobile workers to share documents and

send and receive email as if they were located on the central office

LAN. In this way they can work with the same facilities as their

office colleagues.

Key features for broadband accessThe key technologies that are used to implement broadband access

solutions are all based on industry standards to ensure interoperability

with all other computer and networking equipment.

DHCP server

The Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) allocates IP addresses to

the devices connected to it on the wired or wireless LAN.

Wireless access point

Wireless support gives ultimate flexibility in building the local network.

Print server

A USB port print server allows a printer to be shared by all the PCs and

laptops connected to the local area network.

Virtual server

A virtual server allows your Website, FTP site, and other services on

your LAN to be accessible to Internet users.

Dynamic DNS

Dynamic Domain Name Server (dynDNS) support allows routers with

changing IP addresses to dynamically register their domain name with

any new IP address assigned by the Internet service provider.

Security

Since a broadband connection is available all the time, it is critical that

a firewall is installed to protect the local network against intruders or

Trojan horse software.

All SMC Barricade routers support:

• All-in-one solution: WAN IP sharing, LAN switching and firewall

security

• Network Address Translation (NAT)

• Platform independent, works with Windows, MacOS, or Linux

• Web-based configuration, remote configuration, firmware update
