The speed of a broadband connection is a very important factor to consider when selecting a broadband package. Today’s Internet user wants access to rich media websites such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. while the move towards watching movies and TV online means that speed of connection is vital for an quality, hassle-free broadband service. Broadband is a high-speed Internet connection that makes surfing the Web more enjoyable. It also easily accommodates the video, audio, or complex graphics that are becoming commonplace on the Internet. The speed of a broadband connection is a very important factor to consider when selecting a broadband package. Today’s Internet user wants access to rich media websites such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. while the move towards watching movies and TV online means that speed of connection is vital for an quality, hassle-free broadband service.

Different types of Internet connections have different speed limits which relate to the outgoing and incoming information known as the download or downstream speed and the upload or upstream speed:

(1) The download speed includes all of the data that is inbound to your PC when you are surfing the Internet -- every Web page that loads on your PC, every photograph that you view and every file that you download

(2) The upload speed is the speed by which the data transmits from your computer to destinations on the Internet. This includes your requests to view a website, your automatic logon information for your banking site and files that you may be uploading to various online servers

Download and upload speeds are always a concern for internet users, and providers make this a selling point for their services when advertising the various packages to potential customers.

There are 2 general ways to connect to the Internet:

Wired Broadband

Dial-Up

The most basic type of Internet connection is called a dial-up connection. This connection is made through a modem (the communication mechanism in computers) that uses a telephone line to connect to the Internet. The modem must dial the telephone every time it wants to connect to the Internet. 

The fastest modem that you can use for this type of Internet connection is called a 56K modem. When a regular analogue telephone line is used for an Internet connection, the modem must convert the analogue signals that it receives from the telephone line into digital signals that the computer can comprehend. To send information from your computer, the modem must take the computer's digital signals and convert them into analogue signals to be sent over the telephone line. All of these conversions take time.

The second type of dial-up connection is through an ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network). This connection is a high-speed dial-up and requires a special type of dedicated digital telephone line. This type of connection improves speed because the signals received are already in a digital format, but it is expensive.

Advantages of Dial-Up:

If you already have a telephone landline you can access the internet through this connection

ISDN is faster than ordinary dial-up, for example: if a file takes one hour to download over a standard 56K modem, it will take only about 26 minutes with an ISDN line

Drawbacks to Dial-Up:

Compared to other Internet connections, this is a relatively slow connection.

Calling the Internet will tie up your telephone line often forcing frequent users meet the cost of installing and paying the monthly fees for a second telephone line

For a while dial-up connections were the only way to access the Internet. Now, broadband connections are available in many parts of the country as telephone and cable companies install new lines to accommodate Internet connections.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

This is a special telephone line that also provides high speed Internet access and is available in most areas of Ireland. DSL is one of the most popular methods in use in this country as a way of receiving broadband and means that existing phone lines can be used to provide the service without the need to install a second line or any external equipment or wiring.

The broadband supplier usually provides the customer with a modem or router in which to receive the broadband service which can then be accessed via internal cable connections to a desktop computer or laptop.

Depending on the modem/router received from the supplier, the customer may be able to set-up an internal wireless signal at home so that additional devices such as a smartphone, tablet device or laptops can access the service. This type of broadband may be available within a bundle from an existing phone line provider who may offer a package that includes landline and broadband together.

Advantages of DSL:

Unlike a dial-up connection, DSL is "always on," which means you can still make and receive telephone calls with your land line telephone.

It is faster than dial-up, for example: if a file takes one hour to download over a standard 56K modem, a DSL connection would take between 2.2 and 26 minutes.

It can be used for internet and telephone

Drawbacks to DSL:

The further away you are from the telephone exchange, the slower your connection speed will be

DSL Internet services are not available in all areas Connections can be slower during evening peak times. More people may be using the

broadband connection in one area at the same time and this may affect the “contention ratio”. This is the ratio of the exchange’s coping capacity versus the number of users. Other types of broadband are not affected by contention ratios

When enquiring about a DSL connection at the telephone company, first make sure that it is available in your area and also that you will be able to get a relatively fast connection. To get a DSL connection, you will need your telephone company to hook up the line. They usually provide the DSL modem as well. Sometimes the telephone company can also be the service provider, but more often you will need a different Internet Service Provider to provide the monthly service.

A cable modem is a fast connection that you purchase from your cable television company. Most cable companies provide you with the modem and a network card that must be installed in your computer.

The cable modem is the device that allows your PC to connect to your local cable television system. The Ethernet card on your PC connects to one side of the cable modem. Cable modem interprets the Ethernet signal from your PC and connects to the cable system using a conventional coaxial cable outlet in your home. Once your PC is connected to you cable television system you have established a bi-directional transfer of data between your PC and the cable television system.

The cable television system is then connected to the Internet "cloud," which is the actual Internet. When you want to visit a particular website your keyboard request travels through the cable modem, the cable television system and through the Internet "cloud" until your data request finds the server which will return that website page back down through this network to your PC. Their service appears as a reoccurring charge on your monthly cable television bill.

With cable Internet access, your cable company becomes your Internet Service Provider. You do not have to have cable television to use their cable for Internet service. However, most cable companies give price breaks on Internet access to their cable television customers.In Ireland, Cable Broadband is one of the most widely used ways of connecting to the internet.

Advantages of Cable:

It is very fast, for example: if a file takes one hour to download over a standard 56K modem, a cable connection would take between 2.2 and 13 minutes

Television subscription to a cable network isn’t necessary before signing up for internet access

Drawbacks to Cable:

It is a shared connection, meaning you share the "pipeline" with your neighbours. That doesn't mean that your neighbours will know what you are doing on the Internet, but it does mean that if all of your neighbours were on the Internet downloading large files at the same time, your Internet connection would not be as fast as usual. In actuality, this won't have any noticeable impact on a neighbourhood until a lot more people start using cable modems.

Because cable modem connections are always on, they, like DSL connections, make you more vulnerable to hacking and security breaches. For this reason, many cable companies are now providing their customers firewall software to help protect their security

T1 Line

A T1 line is specific type of telephone line made of fibre optic or copper wires. These lines are designed to allow larger streams of data to pass through than traditional telephone lines. T1 lines are often used for data transmission in commercial settings, but can also be used in a home setting. When you have a dedicated T1 you do not share this line with anybody else. T1 lines are rated as highly reliable.

Businesses with more than 8 phone lines may save money by getting a dedicated T1 line to loop to the place of business from the local phone company office. This can reduce telephone charges and provide high-speed Internet access at the same time. The business is charged for one T1 line, rather than eight (or more) separate telephone lines. Pricing for the T1 line will depend on the distance of the loop, or the mileage between the telephone company and the place of business.

Internet service providers (ISPs) will lease T1 lines to provide service to their network of clients. Other multiplexed fibre optic lines include T2 and T3 lines, which can transfer up to 44.736 megabits per second. A T3 line is equal to having 28 T1 lines, and is used by larger businesses with higher data and voice demands. More advanced T-standards also exist, though are not in wide use.

Advantages of T1:

It is very fast, T1 lines are capable of handling up to 1.544 Mbps

constant speeds and highly secure connections

While some Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) and cable offer higher speeds, T1 lines usually come with agreements that insure a high degree of up time and 24/7 customer service. T1 lines typically cost more than cable or DSL, but are still popular options for businesses that have critical data needs.

The cost of a T1 line can be expensive, but prices are dropping as demand grows.

Broadband over Power Lines

Broadband over Power Lines (or BPL) uses the existing power grid infrastructure to provide high-speed, broadband Internet access to homes and businesses. It is a new innovation based upon existing Power-Line Communications (PLC) technology.

By slightly modifying the current power grids with specialized equipment, the BPL developers could partner with power companies and Internet service providers to bring broadband to everyone with access to electricity

At this point, the proposal is for two types of BPL service:

1. In-House BPL will network machines within a building2. Access BPL will carry broadband Internet using power lines and allow power

companies to electronically monitor power systems

Advantages of BPL:

Available anywhere, especially rural areas. No special infrastructure or cables are needed The speed is equivalent to cable or DSL connections

Drawbacks to BPL:

Not fully developed and is still being tested Potential broadband interference No packaged deals like the cable and DSL providers offer

Fibre Optic Cables

Unlike the majority of broadband connections in Ireland, which use telephone lines or mobile networks, fibre-optic broadband is transferred along special cables underground. The fibre-optic lines run from the provider to the junction box outside the user’s house, at which point regular copper cables run it inside the house.If you are lucky enough to have an FTTH (fibre to the home) connection, the fibre-optic cables run all the way into your house and provide much faster speeds of up to 100Mb.In this country the fibre-optic service is not available everywhere, and is mostly on offer in urban areas. You can expect speeds of up to 50Mb with a regular fibre-optic connection.

What does 50Mb broadband mean to the user?

At 50Mbps, you can:

Download a 100MB album in 16 seconds Download a 10GB Blue Ray movie in 27 minutes Stream HD video straight to your computer without buffering Host multiplayer games with dozens of players Download games in under 2 minutes

The speed of fibre-optic broadband connection can vary between 30Mb and 100Mb.

The types of fibre available are:

(1) FTTH (fibre to the home) – fibre-optic cables run all the way to the outside of your house. This is the quickest service, but is not widely available.

(2) FTTB (fibre to the building/basement) – fibre-optic cables run all the way to your premises. If you are a flat in a large building, the fibre terminates at the building, rather than your individual living space.

(3) FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) – fibre-optic cables run all the way to the cabinet in the street, which can be up to 300m away. This is the most common connection.

(4) FTTN (fibre to the node) – roughly the same as above, only the street cabinet can be further away (up to several km away) with the rest of the distance to your house being covered by regular copper wiring.

Advantages of Fibre Optic:

Unlike cable broadband and digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service, Fibre Optic Broadband features potentially unlimited range with no degradation in signal strength over great distances, and data transfer rates that travel, literally, at the speed of light

Fibre Optic Broadband offers data transfer speeds that are faster than competing broadband service providers

Fibre Optic Broadband has the capacity to bundle Internet service with television and telephone service. While cable Internet providers are also able to bundle these services, they tax the more limited data capabilities of the cable distribution infrastructure

Service bundles from Fibre Optic Broadband providers are often competitively priced against cable and DSL

Drawbacks to Fibre Optic:

The primary drawback to Fibre Optic broadband for the consumer is availability. Implementing a fibre optic network requires a large investment in capital and the construction of a significant infrastructure up front. This fact has priced out numerous potential providers from the market, prompting more rapid development in wireless broadband technologies

Though the technology offers data transfer speeds that are faster than competing broadband service providers, severe limitations in infrastructure and reliability are also present

Fibre Optics are limited in range, due to the high cost involved in constructing large networks that provide service to extensive regions and large numbers of customers.

Shifting ground and bad weather can cause problems: Fibre Optic lines that are bundled together in cables have a tendency to bleed light into neighbouring lines when the cable is bent. One possible solution to this is individual fibre-optic cables for each and every application, but this can be both expensive and logistically overwhelming for providers with aspirations of national or global service. Another remedy is the implementation of a vast network of fibre Optic repeater stations located at relatively short intervals — compared to cable and DSL — from each other. The costs of this solution can be prohibitively high as well.

Fibre Optic cables cannot be installed above ground on telephone poles or below ground in trenches because there is no practical way to protect cables from bending. Fibre-optics work most efficiently in small networks that are confined to a single location where bundled cables of fibre optic lines can be installed and protected from bending.

Wired Networks

Ethernet and wireless networks each have advantages and disadvantages; depending on your needs, one may serve you better than the other.

Wired networks provide users with plenty of security and the ability to move lots of data very quickly.

Wired networks are typically faster than wireless networks, and they can be very affordable. However, the cost of Ethernet cable can add up -- the more computers on your network and the farther apart they are, the more expensive your network will be.

Unless you're building a new house and installing Ethernet cable in the walls, you'll be able to see the cables running from place to place around your home, and wires can greatly limit your mobility. A laptop owner, for example, won't be able to move around easily if his computer is tethered to the wall.

There are three basic systems people use to set up wired networks.

1. An Ethernet system uses either a twisted copper-pair or coaxial-based transport system. The most commonly used cable for Ethernet is a category 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable -- it's useful for businesses who want to connect several devices together, such as computers and printers, but it's bulky and expensive, making it less practical for home use.

2. A phone line, on the other hand, simply uses existing phone wiring found in most homes, and can provide fast services such as DSL.

3. Broadband systems provide cable Internet and use the same type of coaxial cable that gives us cable television.

If you plan to connect only two computers, all you'll need is a network interface card (NIC) in each computer and a cable to run between them. If you want to connect several computers or other devices, you'll need an additional piece of equipment: an Ethernet router. You'll also need a cable to connect each computer or device to the router.

Once you have all of your equipment, all you need to do is install it and configure your computers so they can talk to one another. Exactly what you need to do depends on the type of network and your existing hardware. For example, if your computers came with network cards already installed, all you'll need to do is buy a router and cables and configure your computers to use them. Regardless of which type you select, the routers, adapters and other hardware you buy should come with complete setup instructions.

The steps you'll need to take to configure your computers will also vary based on your hardware and your operating system. User manuals usually provide the necessary information, and Web sites dedicated to specific operating systems often have helpful tips on getting several different computers to talk to each other.

Wireless Broadband

A wireless Internet connection does not require your desktop or notebook computer to be connected to telephone or cable wires. You simply need a modem and an account with a wireless Internet provider. In many areas, you can access a wireless connection free of charge.

In its simplest form, a wireless Internet connection allows access to the Internet over airwaves. A user with wireless Internet needs no hard-wired connection. Several computers can share a single Internet connection and users can access the Internet from any point within range of the signal. In some cases entire neighbourhoods can access the Internet via wireless, greatly reducing infrastructure costs.Wireless operations permits services, such as long range communications, that are impossible or impractical to implement with the use of wires. The most common use is to connect laptop users who travel from location to location. 

Wireless broadband is gaining in popularity in Ireland and offers a good alternative to customers in areas where DSL or cable broadband isn’t available.

Fixed Wireless

This type of connection is usually received via the transmission of a signal to a small antenna on your house (working similar to a TV aerial) which in turn transmits a signal to a connection point inside. Your home computer or laptop is then connected to this point to bring you a broadband supply.

In most home environments, wireless Internet access requires that at least one computer to act as a hub. This computer is directly connected to the Internet through cable, DSL or similar service and must also be connected to a wireless router which broadcasts the Internet connection and controls and sequences the sending and receiving of data.

Advantages of Fixed Wireless:

Services are particularly good in Ireland’s cities and may also provide the best coverage option for certain rural areas too.

Wireless broadband sends and receives information at the same speed (known as a symmetric connection – a function is not available with DSL or cable broadband) and there is a growing demand in the Irish market for this type of service.

In public locations such as airport terminals or coffee shops, laptop users with wireless connections can connect to the Internet via a hot spot which is the access point from where the wireless signal is broadcast

Drawback of Fixed Wireless: Wireless networks operate over one of three types of transmission: microwave, radio

or infrared. Recently concerns have arisen over the effects of such networks on the health of the general populous. Various studies have suggested links between wireless interference and: memory loss, poor concentration, premature senility, nausea and even some varieties of cancer.

Wi Fi

Wi-Fi is the name of a popular wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet and network connections. Wi-Fi works with no physical wired connection between sender and receiver by using radio frequency (RF) technology, a frequency within the electromagnetic spectrum associated with radio wave propagation.

Wi-Fi allows you to connect to the Internet from a hotspot, which is any area where you can sign-on to a Wi-Fi network as a guest and gain free access to the Internet, and it's almost ten times faster than a regular dial-up connection. Many coffee shops, book stores and fast-food restaurants have created Wi-Fi hotspots to attract customers. Libraries and hospitals also provide this facility. Any electronic item with an enabled wireless adapter automatically scans the airwaves and notifies you when it finds a network. Almost every smart phone includes a wireless adapter, but external wireless adapters are readily available for other devices that don't already have one installed.

By eliminating the need for expensive and tedious wiring projects, Wi-Fi has made it easier to create everything from secure home networks to public hotspots. As this type of technology has become more prevalent and more popular, manufacturers have been quick to advertise Wi-Fi capable products.

Advantages of Wi-Fi

Wireless networks are easy to set up and inexpensive

Wireless networks are unobtrusive -- unless you're on the lookout for a place to use your laptop, you may not even notice when you're in a hotspo

Satellite

Satellite Internet is a wireless communications technology. At the user’s end, a satellite modem is connected to a dish antenna. Signals are transmitted between the user’s dish and a satellite relay station up in the sky. The satellite relays data to the ISP (Internet Service Provider) dish back on the ground; from the ISP’s hub, Internet traffic is carried via traditional terrestrial cables. Satellite Internet can reach remote areas where no other type of Internet access can go. Satellite Internet is moderately fast, but there are limitations on the quality of satellite Internet.

In Satellite Internet connection the outgoing and incoming data are sent from, and arrive at, a computer through a satellite. Each subscriber's hardware includes a satellite dish antenna and a transceiver (transmitter/receiver) that operates in the microwave portion of the radio spectrum.

In a two-way satellite Internet connection, the outgoing data is usually sent at a slower speed than the incoming data arrives. Thus, the connection is asymmetric. A dish antenna, measuring about two feet high by three feet wide by three feet deep, transmits and receives signals. Uplink speeds are nominally 50 to 150 Kbps for a subscriber using a single computer. The downlink occurs at speeds ranging from about 150 Kbps to more than 1200 Kbps, depending on factors such as Internet traffic, the capacity of the server, and the sizes of downloaded files.

Satellite Internet systems are an excellent, although expensive option for people in rural areas where Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable modem connections are not available. A satellite installation can be used even where the most basic utilities are lacking, if there is a generator or battery power supply that can produce enough electricity to run a desktop computer system. The two-way satellite Internet option offers an always-on connection that bypasses the dial-up process. In this respect, the satellite system resembles a cable modem Internet connection. But this asset can also be a liability, unless a firewall is used to protect the computer against hack attempts.

Advantages of Satellite:

Satellite offers the opportunity for people in remote areas to access the internet

Satellite broadband also offers additional features such as standard and high-definition TV (HDTV), video on demand and Datacast.

It can be quickly established on a mobile device that is less prone to attacks or a natural disaster

Because of long latency ( delay between sending data and getting a reply) compared with purely land-based systems, interactive applications such as online gaming, VoIP (internet calling), or video chat are not compatible with satellite networks

Satellite systems are also prone to occasional brief periods of solar interference in mid-March and late September, when the sun lines up with the satellite for a few minutes each day

Rain, snow and moisture greatly affect satellite communication. Lower frequency bands are less vulnerable compared to higher frequency bands, which can affect the type of band used in areas where heavy rain is a concern. However, this kind of problem can be resolved easily with the help of a signal amplifier or signal locator and with the help of this additional hardware connection it can be made stronger and more resistant to disturbance with a signal amplifier

Additional network latency can add to the problem of slow or stuttering performance

Line of sight: Satellite communication requires a clear view between the dish and the satellite. As such, signals may be scattered as a result of the presence of trees and other vegetation. Signals can also be sensitive to minor obstructions such as tree foliage when the radio frequency drops to below 900 MHz

Signal Latency: The distance that a signal needs to travel from a user’s satellite station can result in significant delays, and latency that is three times higher than other Internet service providers. This makes satellite broadband less-than-ideal for use with real-time applications like Skype

WiMax, short for ‘Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is similar wireless system to Wi-Fi, but on a much larger scale and at faster speeds. While a Wi-Fi signal can cover a radius of several hundred feet, a fixed WiMAX station can cover a range of up to 30 miles. Mobile WiMAX stations can broadcast up to 10 miles of reliable coverage. It is considered the second generation broadband wireless access (BWA) standard and will most likely be used along with Wi-Fi, rather than replace it. Since WiMAX has such as large signal range, it will potentially be used to provide wireless Internet access to entire cities and other large areas.

Advantages of WiMAX:

Fast speeds-speed of 10 Mbps at 10 kilometers within line-of-site  Wide, reliable coverage Single station can serve hundreds of users. 

Much faster deployment of new users compared to wired networks. It is standardized, and the same frequency equipment should work together.

Disadvantages of WiMAX:

Line of sight is needed for more distant connections Bad weather conditions such as rain can interrupt the signal Other wireless equipment can cause interference WiMAX is a very power consuming technology and requires significant electrical

Mobile Broadband

Mobile broadband, also known as WWAN (for Wireless Wide Area Network) is a means of delivering high-speed Internet access from mobile providers for portable devices. If you have a data plan on your cell phone that lets you email or visit websites over your cellular provider's 3G network, that's mobile broadband.

Mobile broadband services can also provide wireless Internet access on your laptop or netbook using built-in mobile broadband network cards or other portable network devices, like USB modems or portable wi-fi mobile hotspots.

3G is fast enough for streaming online videos, downloading music, viewing Web photo albums, and video conferencing. 4G promises up to 10 times the speed of 3G, which is currently described by the cellular companies as having typical download speeds of 700 Kbps to 1.7 Mbps and upload speeds of 500 Kbps to 1.2 Mbps -- not as fast as fixed broadband from cable modems or FiOS, but about as fast as DSL.

Note that speeds will vary by a lot of conditions such as your signal strength.

One of the highest selling points for mobile broadband is its portability, which is especially true for frequent travellers. Drawbacks of Mobile Broadband:

Mobile internet access costs more than standard broadband connection. This is because, data transfer using cable costs lesser than when it is done over 3G networks

Speed may be slow compared to normal broadband. Speed depends upon the location of the user, which in some places may not be of any use at all

Restrictive download/usage limit. The reason behind the service not offering the feature of 'unlimited download' is that it may overwhelm the system which in turn might slow down service across the 3G mobile network

Usually the download allowance in mobile broadband is limited to 1GB and 3GB. And if a user exceeds this limit, then he may have to incur high charges. Compared to standard broadband package, the mobile one may charge up to 15 times more for additional usage.  WiMAX actually stands for “Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access”, and is a new type of wireless high speed internet access technology with the potential to offer broad, reliable coverage.  In theory, WiMAX could potentially replace the need for 3G, 4Gor other types of phone-based web access as well as Wi-Fi, and possibly even the need for a dedicated home broadband service.

 

WiMAX works on essentially the same principle as Wi-Fi – sending signals that can carry data wirelessly using radio waves.  However, Wi-Fi is constrained by a having a small field in which it is effective and the signal grows weaker as it has to pass through solid objects such as walls.  Wi-Fi is also still not widely available across the UK, with many non-urban areas having few publicly accessible Wi-Fi areas (or “hot spots” as they are often known).

 

WiMAX works a bit differently.  A WiMAX network requires a system of towers, very similar to the common mobile phone towers that we see currently spread across the country.  However, one difference is that WiMAX needs far

fewer towers to be effective; one tower can potentially cover an area as large as 7,800 square kilometres (3,000 square miles), so the technology does not require the landscape to be dotted with more telecoms towers.

 

These towers would connect to the internet using a high speed wired link, and could also connect to each other wirelessly through a microwave link, meaning that just a few towers could easily cover a very large area.  This means that WiMAX would be a perfect solution to the problem of remote areas which at present struggle to receive any sort of broadband signal due to the expense of installing thousands of kilometres of cable, or many 3G phone towers.

 

The signal from these towers is then received by a user through a small antenna on their computer or phone from a transmitting station similar to a Wi-Fi hub, though the signal is better at getting through solid objects such as walls and trees than a Wi-Fi signal.  The tower can provide both a non-line of sight service, when there are solid obstacles between it and the receiver, or a direct line of sight service, which provides an even stronger and more stable signal, ideal for office use.

 

The major benefit of WiMAX is the significant range of access that the technology can provide to users.   Currently, standard Wi-Fi services usually have a range of less than 50 metres; a WiMAX antenna would be able to send data through a non-line of sight service up to eight kilometres (five miles) away; from a direct line of sight connection, signals could be received almost 50 kilometres (30 miles) away.  Signals should remain clear and strong for that distance, providing fast and reliable internet access from a significantly reduced infrastructure. Internet access should also be measurably faster than it is across today’s Wi-Fi connections.

 

To access WiMAX at home, the idea would be that you buy a WiMAX enabled computer and then simply access the wireless signal in the same manner that you access wireless broadband or 3G services at present.  You would probably want to have an encryption key installed in the computer which would help to ensure that whatever you are doing on the internet remains private; others using the same WiMAX connection couldn’t see what you are doing, for example.

 

In the UK, WiMAX has been discussed for a number of years, and there are few small areas where the service is available, mostly in built up, highly populated urban areas, though plans for continued rollout would appear to be limited.  However, another alternative technology to 3G known as LTE appears to be more likely as the potential successor to the internet access we have today; LTE allows mobile operators such as 3 Mobile to make better use of the radio spectrum they own.  The upcoming auction of the part of the radio wave spectrum required for true 4G services is likely to see an expansion in this type of faster access rather than WiMAX, although it is likely that the two technologies will continue to co-exist for a number of years to come.

Mobile Broadband in Ireland

Broadband suppliers in Ireland provide a range of packages which may be priced according to their connection speed. According to a ComReg report in December 2011, the majority of households are likely to be on a connection speed that varies between 2MB to just under 10MB so it is a good idea to keep this in mind when shopping around for a deal. EDGE increases data transmission rates and improves transmission reliability in mobile devices that use it. However, its theoretical maximum speed is 473.6 kbit/s, so it still considered a wireless broadband technology.

EVDO (Evolution-Data Optimized) is significantly faster than EDGE. It transmits data via radio signals, and for this reason is classified as a wireless broadband technology. It is employed in mobile devices around the world via CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) networks: cellular networks that achieve high data transmission speeds and support a vast number of users.

WiMAX is an emerging wireless broadband technology whose download speeds are approximately 10 mbit/s. It is expected to be within the 40 mbit/s range by next year. There is currently only one major WiMAX provider due to the fact that it must be run on it own network: it cannot utilize GSM or CDMA networks as EDGE and EVDO do. However there are plans for widespread WiMax commercial deployment by 2010, and will be marketed as a significantly advanced wireless alternative to Cable and DSL internet services.
