all has always conjured new beginnings for me. Perhaps Albert Camus said it best, “Autumnis a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” This fall Winterthur presents an abundantautumnal bouquet of offerings to appeal to every interest.

On October 20, the museum premieres a new exhibition concept called Eye on the Iconic in whicha single memorable object is displayed and mined for wider meaning. Fans of the Netflix seriesThe Crown, a dramatization of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, will recognize the most iconiccostume from that show—a replica of the original coronation gown. Commissioned by Harrodsdepartment store to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and made by AngelsCostumes, the gown was worn by actress Claire Foy in the coronation scene of the Netflix series.

The 54th Delaware Antiques Show will again present the most respected dealers offeringfurniture, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, and folk art in a buying exhibition that has been called “theshow for true believers . . . in search of the finest Americana.” We are delighted to have as ourHonorary Chair and keynote speaker my great friend Gil Schafer III, a leading proponent oftraditional classical architecture. Gil will speak on the subject of his new book A Place to Call Home:Tradition, Style, and Memory in the New American House, which codifies his firm’s philosophy: A houseis truly successful when its architecture, landscape, and decoration are all working together tomake a great place to live. The loan exhibition for this year’s show comes from our esteemedsister institution The Biggs Museum of Art in Dover and celebrates their 25th anniversary witha selection of masterpieces you will not want to miss.

For families, the hugely popular Truck and Tractor Day returns to delight children of all ageswho have fantasized about joining a fire brigade or getting behind the controls of a giant backhoe. The magic then continues as Yuletide at Winterthur opens the holiday season on November 18with decorations inspired by royal events and treasures from Christmases past, including ourwonderful 18-room dollhouse decked out for the season. All of us at Winterthur look forward towelcoming you this autumn and throughout the year.

Meticulous record-keeper H. F. du Pontdocumented every work of art he purchased.Unfortunately, he recorded most of his 515fireplace tiles as simply, “tile,” renderingresearch into the tiles’ provenanceparticularly challenging. Postgraduateconservation fellow Madeline Hagerman is inthe midst of a two-year project studying andtreating them. Currently only one set of tilescan definitively be traced—a set of 34 Dutchsea monster tiles du Pont purchased for $68from New York art dealer Edwin Jackson in1940 for the New York Bedroom fireplace.During 1960s renovations, the New YorkBedroom was de-installed and replaced withthe Newport and Gidley Rooms. The tileswere removed and placed in storage, wherethey remained until 2016, when Hagermantreated the tile (right, top). The surface wascovered in tape and sticker residue, ingraineddirt, and areas of discolored restorationmaterials in the corners. Post-conservation(right, bottom), the tile more closely resemblesits intended appearance.

Winterthur has joined with the Partnershipfor the Delaware Estuary in their mission toimprove the tidal Delaware River and Bay.This summer the Partnership began usingtwo Winterthur ponds as nurseries to raisethousands of freshwater mussels. Did youknow that freshwater mussels are “filter-feeders,” providing valuable “ecosystemservices” as they clean the streams and riversin which they live? Sadly, their numbers havebeen dwindling in North America. In aneffort to reverse that trend, the Partnershipwill monitor our baby mussels to determinebest practices for rearing them. In 2018, theywill tag the juvenile mussels, place them inadditional Delaware streams, and monitortheir growth and the quality of the water.

Millions of gallons of water flow through theWinterthur property each day. Winterthur isexcited about this collaboration and iscommitted to helping produce clearer andcleaner water on the estate, in theBrandywine watershed, and as it leaves toflow into the Delaware River.
