We l c o m e , d e a r r e a d e r s , t oCinebook’s 12th catalogue. The 20 newtitles we will be offering you through June2012 will bring our total to an amazing212 titles from 41 different series!
This half of the year will be placedfirmly under the twin signs of science fic-tion and fantasy. For example, we’rebringing you the third volume of Christinand Mézières’ “Valerian,” setting thepace for what will be, from now on, apublishing rate of two volumes each yearfor this legendary sci-fi saga. Leo’s“Antares” continues with Volume Two for
more outer space adventures. On the fan-tasy front, the sorcery-filled “Crusade”comes to a blood-drenched conclusion, and Runberg and Ocaña’s “Darwin’sDiaries” delves deeper into the darkesthours of the famous man of science.Meanwhile, “Blake & Mortimer” give us abit of each: a true sci-fi extravaganzafrom creator E.P. Jacobs himself, then aquest steeped in Christian tradition writ-ten by comic superstar Jean Van Hamme.
This catalogue also sees the returnof beloved old friends like “Largo Winch,”back from getting the Hollywood treat-
ment (with Sharon Stone) with two books, and Desberg and Marini’s swashbucklinghero “The Scorpion,” the first volume ofwhich we have just reprinted.
The regulars are still here as well, ofcourse: Morris’s Lonesome Cowboy“Lucky Luke” with three titles, two writ-ten by Goscinny and one by Bob deGroot. And, as always, Van Hamme andVance’s “XIII” will come out every twomonths.
For comic relief, we have the ever-ready “Bluecoats” and their very uniqueway of surviving the American Civil War,
and star reporters “Spirou and Fantasio,”engaged in a dangerous, scary—butalways hilarious—expedition.
And let’s not forget our youngerreaders, with De Gieter’s Egyptian hero“Papyrus” and Roba’s wonderfullycharming “Billy & Buddy.”
Finally, it’s time to introduce ournew series: “SPOOKS,” written by theauthor of the critically acclaimed “LongJohn Silver,” Xavier Dorison. A dash ofWestern, a pinch of “The X-Files,” a smat-tering of demonology. Shake well andenjoy… in a well-lit room!

Published in France in 1969 in the weekly comic magazine Pilote, The Empire of a Thousand Planetsis the second story featuring Valerian and Laureline, following The City of Shifting Waters. It is the beginningof Mézières and Christin’s heroes’ adventures throughspace and time, with all the promise and all the clumsinessone can expect from a pair of beginners.
The Land Without Stars was first published as a graphicnovel in 1972 by Dargaud, who went on publishing theseries for over 40 years. It quickly became very popularin Europe, as it told stories that were outside the frame ofbande dessinée* at the time.

But,since he was the President of the UnitedStates, XIII’s friends are all on the run again.McLane, though, has been arrested, and he’sbeing judged in secret by the heads of theAmerican intelligence community. Sentencedto life in a secret prison, he has no illusionsthat he’ll ever reach it. The ruthlessness of theNSA Director proves him right—but he’s not theonly one who wants XIII dead.
Initially serialized in Spirou magazine in 1984,“XIII” was created by Jean Van Hamme, legendary author of such series as “LargoWinch,” “Thorgal,” “Lady S.” and “Blake &Mortimer”; and William Vance, illustrator ofthe bestsellers “Howard Flynn,” “BruceHawker,” “Bruno Brazil,” “Bob Morane” and“Marshall Blueberry.”

The lights of Rome have dimmed. When theScorpion and his friends get back to the HolySee, it is a place of fear and death they find, acity cowering under Trebaldi’s boot. Their onlychance to destroy the Pope’s power is to heedRochnan’s last words and look into the past ofthe Scorpion’s mother. Dodging warrior-monksand Inquisitors, they begin to unravel a storythat could yield some answers too horrible tocontemplate…
“Those who bemoan that there’s not been adecent play on the old Three Musketeerstheme for over three decades: Sit down andrelax. We’re given “The Sopranos” of the eigh-teenth century, “Tomb Raider” with a twist, and a nod and wink to The Da Vinci Code, orrather, its source material The Holy Blood andThe Holy Grail as told during a confessionalscene from The Godfather.” Paul Birch,Birmingham Mail / Speech Balloons

Billy’s got a good life with Mum and Dad.Plenty of play, a little homework, and asmart, loving dog. Of course there’s theoccasional hitch: that nosy, bossy old maidof a neighbour—and her Siamese cat—or thecheeky beat cop Agent 22. But it’s never tooserious, and even Dad’s occasional embar-rassing blunders can’t spoil things for long. After all, as long as you have friends, every-thing will be all right in the end!
“The humor in these short stories runs thegamut from gentle to slapstick to sophisticatedand generally has its basis in everyday concernsthat children can relate to.”Penny Kenny, Comics Bulletin
More hilarious proof that a Cocker spaniel is definitely a boy’sbest friend.

WithBlake forced to cut short his holidays at thenews, a disappointed Mortimer turns hisattention to Greece, where an earthquake hasuncovered an ancient chapel. And whoexactly covets it so much?
“[...] A much more recent creation thanEdgar P Jacobs’ original tales, but still man-ages to maintain all the charm and characterof the original series, for which the creatorsdeserve huge praise for pulling off.” SimonChadwick on Vol. 5, The Cartoonists' Club ofGreat Britain
