MEET OuR COVER DESIGNER...WElCOME!

The Shorewood High School Graphic Design Program is comprised of in-troductory, intermediate and advanced level classes. Within the program,students are taught various computer software programs. The higher-level classes are taught in a design studio atmosphere wherein clientscome to the class to present their ideas to the students and they workon projects that are both school as well as community based. My name is Samantha Krieger, I am currently ajunior at Shorewood High School. This is mysecond year taking graphic design. What I lovemost about this class, is its infinite possibili-ties for self expression. Here at ShorewoodHigh School, I’m involved with the Best Buddiesand the Guatemala Club. Outside of school, Ireally enjoy photography and being outdoors.Additionally, for the last nine years I’ve beenan Irish dancer. FAX - Fax registration will only be accepted with VISA, MASTERCARD or DISCOVER payment. Complete a registration form with credit card information. Please call to confirm that we receivedyour fax. Our FAX NUMBER is (414) 961-3175.

DROp BOX - Place your completed registration form along with your payment in a sealed envelope.The drop box is located on the outside doors leading to the Recreation Department office in the Administration Building at the High School.

MAIL - Mail the registration form with your payment to Shorewood Recreation and Community Services Department, 1701 E. Capitol Drive, Shorewood, WI 53211.

WALk-IN - Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm & 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm.The Recreation Department office is located in the Administration Building on the first floor ofShorewood High School at 1701 E. Capitol Drive, Shorewood, WI 53211.

Resident status includes individuals living in Shorewood, Shorewood School District and Village em-ployees, all students enrolled in Shorewood Public Schools and their families, and non-resident tax-payers of Shorewood.

EARLy REGISTRATIONS

All forms received prior to the designated registra-

tion dates listed above, will be processed randomly

on the first day of mail registration.

LATE FEE REGISTRATIONS

All program registrations must occur 2 days priorto classes starting, or by the sign-up deadline. A$10 late fee will be assessed if we receive yourregistration after these two days or the dead-line. Please register early.

ONLINE - Visit www.shorewoodschools.org for the easiest way to sign up. Click on the registration link to begin. Call us if you need assistance and we will be happy to walk you throughwith the online registration process. See page 33. Online registrations are processed instantly!

The fact is, violence is sometimes unavoidable. In this class participants will beshown real-life situations, and then be able to safely demonstrate techniques duringthe seminar.Location: TBATime: 5:30 - 6:30 pm Fee (per session): Resident - $16 / Non-Resident - $24Date course #Wednesday, February 5 2100.1Wednesday, March 5 2100.2

During the month of April, the SCFC is holding a competition to find the most fit ath-lete in Shorewood! Members and non-SCFC members can participate in this event.Participants will have 30 days to complete and be scored in 10 different fitness re-lated events. Each event will have a scoring table assigned to it, so the better theperformance means a higher score. Events must be witnessed by a ShorewoodCommunity Fitness Center staff member. The decathlon events will be released twoweeks prior to the competition. The 10 events will be evenly divided among the fol-lowing categories:

The male and female winners will take home a fitness related prize, and be crownedShorewood's Most Fit Athlete!course#: 2000.1Fee: $5 - Registration fee only

Bright Beginnings Preschool focuses on the individual child, and provides an educational environment that stimulates and nurtures each child’s unique growthpotential. We provide numerous exciting and engaging thematic units throughout the year, allowing your child to freely explore and grow in important skill developmentareas, including: large and fine motor, language and literacy, science and math, art and music. Your child’s social and emotional development is of prime importance.At Bright Beginnings, we help each child grow in his or her feelings of self-worth, self-confidence, respect, and appreciation of others, and love of learning and ofschool. Our curriculum reflects the most current understanding regarding child development and early education, and embraces Shorewood School District curriculumgoals. Our classroom ratio is two adults for sixteen students.

Bright Beginnings will follow the school year calendar for the 2014-2015 school year. When the elementary schools do not have school, Bright Beginnings will not beheld.

pRESchOOL TOILETING GuIDELINES: All children are to be completely toilet trained before the first day of school. If your child is not completely toilet trained, youwill be required to be present in the classroom to assist your child with toileting needs. Teachers and volunteers will assist children with buttons or snaps on clothingas necessary. Independence and reinforcement of self-help skills will be encouraged by the teachers.

2014-2015 Tuition payments: A $200 nonrefundable deposit is required at time of registration to reserve a space for your child. Payment plans are available atregistration. 50% of the tuition must be paid by March 1st and the remaining balance must be paid by September 1st, unless you are on an established payment plan.Receive a $100 tuition discount if tuition is paid in full at registration. No refunds or credit will be given for this program.

SkI AND SNOWBOARD cLuB - LEARN TO SkI OR SNOWBOARD AT SuNBuRST

Grade 4 - 12Whether you are an experienced skier/snowboarder or have never tried it, this program is for you. Each session includes one hour of lessons with the remaining time for open skiing or snow-boarding. Plus each participant who completes the lessons will receive a Sunburst Ski Club Membership, allowing them to come back any time after completing the program and ski for the dayfor a nominal fee. Prices include bus transportation. Minimum number of 15 is required, so sign up early! This is a great program to sign up with a friend. All registrations and Sunburst paperworkmust be completed no later than Friday, December 13. All participants must rent a helmet if they do not bring their own. Age 3 - 12

Is your child interested in learning how to ice skate? Designed by U.S. Figure Skating, the Learn to Skate Classes enable beginning skaters to experience the fundamentals of the sport to starta lifetime commitment to health and fitness. Each session will have goals for participants to master before moving on to the next level. To see which lesson is right for your child, please see de-scriptions below. Be sure to choose the appropriate level. Classes meet once a week for 6 weeks. Recommended equipment: helmet, mittens/gloves, long/snow pants, sweatshirts, winterjacket, and skates. Skates can be rented at the Pettit for an additional fee. Fee includes six 40 minute classes, 20 minutes of designated skating time. Participants only practice time is immediatelyfollowing every class. Complimentary public skating on day of class when available, plus 4 additional complimentary public skating passes to be used for practice time on non-class daysthroughout session. Tot N Me - This is a unique opportunity for a parent and a child to skate together. Registrationfee includes one child, ages 3 - 5 years, and one adult. The parent/adult must be on the icewearing skates (with their child) during all lessons.

Snowplow Sam - This program is a progression of three classes designed to teach the funda-mentals of skating to children, ages 3 - 5 years, with little or no skating experience. Skaters willlearn basic balance and skating skills in an age appropriate and fun environment. Please specifylevel. Snowplow Sam 1 - Sit and stand with skates on, marching and gliding with two feet.Snowplow Sam 2 - Long glides, forward and backward sizzles. Snowplow Sam 3 - Forward skating, stopping and curves.

hockey Tots - This class is designed for those ages 3 - 5 with little or no skating experiencethat have hockey on the brain. Class participants will learn the basics of skating with and withouttheir hockey sticks including falling and getting up, marching, 2-foot glides, stopping and more. The focus will be on skating skills and not the actual game of hockey. Although this is a hockey

geared class it is always recommended for new skaters to begin in figure skates and change to hockey skates once a solid sense of balance has been established.

Basic 1 - 8 - The Basic Skills Program teaches students progressively more difficult movesthrough eight levels of skating. Upon competition of the Basic 1 through 8 Program, skaters willhave knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating. Ifa child is skating (or taking lessons) for the first time, the student should register for the Basic 1class level. Students are evaluated at the first class session to gauge their skill/ability level, andare placed in another class if the their skill is applicable. Please specify level. Do you like working with children? Do you like arts and crafts, drawing, activegames, sports, music, etc.? The Shorewood Recreation Department is looking forindividuals who are friendly, dependable, and enthusiastic to help out with variousprograms throughout the winter-spring. If you are interested in volunteering thiswinter-spring, please fill out a Teen Volunteer Application located at shorewood-schools.org under the Recreation and Community Services Tab.

NOTE: If you were a Teen Volunteer in the past, there is no need to fill out a newapplication. Simply login to your VICnet account and sign up for volunteer opportu-nities as you did for previous recreation programs.

TEEN FITNESS cERTIFIcATION

Grade 7 - 8Students can become certified to use the Shorewood Community Fitness Centerwithout the supervision of a parent/guardian. During a 60 minute session with apersonal trainer, the student will learn proper techniques and safety when usingequipment at the SCFC. If the student can demonstrate required knowledge, theywill be given a membership to the SCFC for the 2013 - 2014 school year. Contactthe Fitness Center at (414) 961-3100 to sign for this program.

TEEN STRENGTh AND AGILITy

This class will teach students the basics of strength and agility training at the Shore-wood Community Fitness Center. Throughout the sessions, the course will progressin training techniques to help the students learn and advance physically and men-tally. Completion of the class includes a membership to the SCFC for the 2013 -2014 school year and certifies the student to workout independently. For moreinformation see pages 14 & 17.

Swimming instruction is provided to give children a positive attitude toward the water while introducing and developing proper swimming techniques. Allparticipants will be evaluated the first day of class to ensure proper class placement. Parents are allowed to observe in the pool area from the bleachers.Children that are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers. No disposable or cloth diapers are allowed in the pool. The Shorewood Recreation Departmentreserves the right to change a swimmer’s level if the level they are placed in does not meet their ability.

Parents are taught to safely work with their child in the water, including how to appropriatelysupport and hold their child in the water. Everyone must wear appropriate swimming attire in the pool. No swimsuits, caps, or towels are issued at any of the community swims.

Before entering the pool, it is mandatory to shower.

The Recreation Department is not responsible for any lost or stolen articles.Bring your own lock for a locker. Overnight storage is not permitted.

Sauna/Whirlpool (Adults only) will be open during Adult and Lap Swims.Only towels are allowed in sauna.

All Ages - Youth ages 7 and under must be accompanied in the water byan adult (ratio of one adult to every 8 children). Children 6 and under mustbe within one arm’s length of an adult while in the water (ratio of one adultto every 4 children).

Infants and toddlers must wear swim diapers in the pool. No disposable orcloth diapers allowed.

We have an adaptive chair for shallow water entrance.

The Shorewood School District Facility Services Department makes everyattempt to maintain water and air temperature according to the standardsset by the State of Wisconsin. Any fluctuation in temperature will be cor-rected as soon as possible. 1. A MESSAGE TO pARENTSFor all programs, age and grade requirement will be as of the firstday of the class, unless otherwise specified. Please only registeryour child in the class when he/she meets the requirements. Allage and grade requirements are set to benefit the child and makeinstruction consistent for the instructor. In some instances, the re-quirements have been set for the child’s safety.

2. SpEcIAL NOTIcE TO pARENTS OF yOuTh pROGRAM pAR-TIcIpANTSParents are reminded to pick their children up at the completion timelisted for the activity they are participating in. Recreation staff arenot responsible for participants once their class is completed (theyare not paid to wait for parents who are late in picking up their chil-dren.) We also ask parents to stress to their children that when theyare in a school building, they should go directly to their program ac-tivity area and not wander around the building. We do not wish tolose our privilege to utilize these facilities because of particpantsbeing where they should not be. Your cooperation with this isgreatly appreciated.

3. DISRupTIVE pARTIcIpANTSDuring the course of our programs, there have been times that dis-ruptive participants have impacted our classes. Our instructors tryto work with these participants; however, sometimes the behaviorbecomes such that it impacts the ability of the other students tolearn, of the instructor to teach, or provide a safe learning environ-ment. The following procedure will be in effect if problems occur:1. Verbal contact between instructor and program participantand/or parent.2. Verbal contact between the Recreation Department and programparticipant and/or parent.3. Reoccurance following these conversations will result in removalfrom the program.There will be no refund of fees for individuals removed from pro-grams due to disruptive behavior. The determination of program of-fering depends on the number of registered participants.

4. ON-SITE REGISTRATIONInstructors will not accept registration or payment at the class site.All registration transactions must be completed at the RecreationDepartment or Fitness Center at least three business days prior tothe class beginning or an administrative late fee will be assessed.

5. REDucE/WAIVER OF FEESThe Shorewood Recreation and Community Services Departmentrecognizes that some of the residents of the Village of Shorewoodmay require financial assistance to participate in recreation pro-grams. If your child attends Shorewood Public Schools and hasqualified for Shorewood’s Nutritional Services Free and ReducedMeal Program, the student and their family members may receivethe reduced program fees as listed below. Please indicate your par-ticipation in the Shorewood Nutritional Services Free and ReducedMeal Program on your registration form. If you live in the Village ofShorewood, you may qualify for reduced program fees. Pleasecomplete a reduced program fee form and return the form to theShorewood Recreation Department. The Recreation Departmentwill notify you regarding your eligibility to receive the reduced pro-gram fees as listed below within two (2) business days after receiv-ing your application. Upon approval of your request, payment will

be required prior to participation in the program. Reduced programfees are not granted after the registration has been processed. TheShorewood Recreation Department reserves the right to deny par-ticipants request for reduced program fees. Program fees may bereduced by the following:

Programs that do not qualify for a discount rate include vendor pro-grams, field trips, co-op programs, activity nights, Fun Friday Eventsand summer enrichment. The Recreation Department does notwant to exclude any Shorewood Public School student or a studentthat lives in Shorewood who may be unable to participate due to fi-nancial hardship. If a family is unable to pay the entire youth pro-gram fee, the parent/guardian should contact the Department inwriting and arrangements may be made so that the youth is able toparticipate at a further reduced program fee. The Recreation De-partment does offer payment plan options.

6. cANcELLED cLASSESAll programs are subject to change. Programs will be subject tocancellation should low attendance warrant such a decision. Theremay be times classes need to be cancelled due to weather, facilityscheduling, etc. We will attempt to reschedule the class, however,if we are unable to make up the class, there will be NO REFUNDSor credit give for class cancellations. For program closing due toinclement weather, or other reasons, call (414) 963-6913 x 3 orcheck the website at: shorewoodschools.org.

7. ShARING OF pERSONAL INFORMATIONThe Shorewood Recreation and Community Services Departmentrequires personal information from each participant on the registra-tion form. The information provided to us by each individual is usedsolely for the purpose of participating in Shorewood Recreation pro-grams. The Shorewood Recreation Department will not share par-ticipant’s information with outside parties.

8. LATE FEE REGISTRATIONAll program registrations must occur two days prior to classes start-ing, or by the sign-up deadline. A $10 late fee will be assessed ifwe receive your registration after these two days or the dead-line. Please register early.

9. REFuND pROcEDuREFull refunds will not be issued unless a program is cancelled by theRecreation Department.

10. RETuRNED chEckSThere will be a $25 service fee on all returned checks.

11. cAN I DROp A cLASS AFTER IT STARTED?You are important to us! The Shorewood Recreation and Commu-nity Services Department is committed to excellence by providinghigh quality programs and services. If you or a family member arenot satisfied with a class, program or service offered by the Depart-ment, please let us know prior to the start of the third class. In orderto receive a pro-rated credit you must notify our office prior tothe 3rd class. After the 3rd class has met, a credit for that classwill not be issued. The credit expires two years from the date of

issue.

12. VENDOR pROGRAMAs indicated next to the individual program and in the program de-scription, these classes are contracted out by private businessesfor the Recreation Department. We are unable to give a creditfive business days before the start of the class.

FEE FOR TRANSFERRING OR DROppING A cLASS BE-FORE IT STARTSYou may drop or transfer a class before it starts without penalty ifcompleted at least two business days prior to the class beginning.A $10 fee per registration will be assessed if we do not receivethis notice. You will receive credit for dropping a class.

14. pAyMENT pLANPayment plans are available for those people that sign up for morethan $200 worth of program fees. Please contact the RecreationDepartment for more information at (414) 963-6913 x 4.

15. INcLEMENT WEAThER cANcELLATIONSOutdoor programs will be cancelled when the weather is inclementor fields are not playable. Please call the information line, (414)963-6913 x 3, to determine if a program is cancelled.

16. WAITING LISTSIf classes are filled when you enroll, please request to be placed ona waiting list, or opt for it online. If there are any cancellations ornew classes opened, you will be notified and permitted to registerfor them. No names are put on a waiting list after the first class hasmet. Please do not attend the class if you are on a waiting list. Pay-ment is not accepted for waiting list.

17. SMOkING/ALcOhOL uSE pOLIcyThe use of all tobacco products or drinking of alcoholic beverageson all School District premises is prohibited by state law.

18. ROuND-up FOR REcREATIONRounding up your program fee helps provide financial support toindividuals who are unable to afford program fees. If you are round-ing up, please put the amount you would like to round up in the inthe appropriate box on the registration form. You can donate onlineby going to Donation For Recreation or with your phone registra-tion.

19. SAy chEESE!For program promotion, photographs may be taken of participantsfrom time to time. If you do not wish to have your photo taken,please notify the photographer and/or class instructor. The Shore-wood Recreation Department uses social media as one of the waysto promote our programs. Please inform us if you choose to opt outof photo use and/or social media photo posting.

20. REcREATION BuLLETIN SuBScRIpTIONResidents of Shorewood will continue to receive our bulletin fromthe post office. For non-residents, for a fee of $6 per year, we willmail the three seasonal bulletins to your home. Please indicate sub-scriber on your registration form and include your payment.

Shorewood High School utilizes video surveillance equipmentinside and outside of the buildings on the campus. This surveil-lance has been designed to protect buildings, building assetsand to enhance safety for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.The following guidelines will be used by the High School for useof such equipment:

• Camera placement and use allows for the recording of persons

present on the school grounds.

• The date, time and location of each recorded session and the

video images will be stored on our server for at least seven days.Selected data may be archived.

• School administrators may, in accordance with State and Fed-

eral law, use video images to investigate student behavior andsupport student discipline, including suspension and expulsionproceedings.

• Recorded video images may be “pulpil records” under Wis.

Stat. 118.125. Disclosure of any video image that is confidentialstudent record shall only be in accordance with applicable law.

Let the Shorewood Recreation Department host your child’s next birthday party. Parties must be booked atleast two weeks in advance. Reservations are for Saturdays and Sundays only. Adjustments (ie: number ofguests, time or theme) will not be honored after two weeks prior to the party date. Adult supervision is required.Please see below for party options and specifics.

Come enjoy the use of Shorewood High School’s North Gym. You canchoose the sport; soccer, kickball, dodge ball, or floor hockey and we’ll pro-vide the equipment. Our staff will facilitate the sport. The VHE Pool UpperLobby is included for the party gathering. Fee includes up to 18 guests. Ad-ditional guests are welcome at $4/guest not to exceed 24 guests.
