Members of the Prairie du Chien High School gymnastics team are Jessica Gutknecht and Morgan Pedretti.
Th e Prairie du Chien High School gymnasts have been busy at the downtown facility practicing under their new Coach Amber Narvaez. Narvaez, who had previously coached for Club TNT Gymnastics, is very excited to have the opportunity to build up the gymnastics pro-gram in Prairie du Chien.
At a recent school board meeting, the possibility of taking away the gymnastics program was discussed due to low numbers of gym-nasts this year.
“Prairie du Chien has too nice of a facility to cancel the gymnastics program,” said Narvaez. “We hope to get our numbers up in the next two years so we can keep it going. We would like to invite surround-ing area schools to co-op with us next year.”
Th is year, there are two high school gymnasts, Morgan Pedretti and Jessica Gutknecht. All of the meets will be away meets. Narvaez noted that the high school numbers may very well improve in the future, however, with 33 middle school athletes out for gymnastics this season. Narvaez said that she is very happy with the high num-bers of middle school girls and she hopes to see many of the middle school gymnasts carry over into high school.
“Th is is a great start to re-building the high school team,” said Narvaez, who has competed in a National Gymnastics Competition in Florida where she placed in the vault. “Th e younger the gymnasts are when they begin training, the better skills they will have in high school.”
Carrie Nolan, who coached the summer gymnastics program, and Laurie Pedretti have been helping Coach Narvaez with managing the winter gymnastics program. Th ey are working on diff erent projects and fund-raisers for the program and plan to hold a gymnastics clin-ic for elementary students after the new year.

Who are some of the top teams in your con-ference? What is your conference outlook, goals for the season? Ithaca and North Crawford should be tough at the top of the conference with the rest of the conference being competi-tive also.
What will be the keys to your success this season? We need to limit our turnovers and improve our shooting percentage. Our team de-fense and rebounding is a key to our success.
What was last year’s record? 9-13What do you consider your team’s strengths
and challenges? We have limited numbers so the younger girls will have to contribute early on. Th ese girls are willing to work so we will im-prove as the season goes on.

The Wauzeka-Steuben boys’ basketball team is a relatively young team which will be looking for continued improvement as it strives for the Ridge and Valley Conference crown this season, said Head Coach Matt Mezera.
The Hornets feature two returning letter winners in Corey Schafer and Hunter Heisz. The team con-sists of four seniors, eight juniors, one sophomore, two freshmen and one foreign exchange student.
The Hornets finished with an 8-15 overall re-cord last season, but the junior varsity team had a 19-2 record last season, and those players have now moved up to varsity.
The Hornets also have a relatively tall squad this season compared to other conference teams.
“We will be looking for good, balanced scoring this season,” said Mezera, who noted that keys to success will include staying healthy, being consis-tent, and getting better on team defense, where they will play man-to-man and various zones de-pending upon match-ups.
“We will also be trying to become more patient on offense and work the ball through,” said Mezera. “We look forward to another great year of Hornets’ basketball and we thank our fans for all of their con-tinued support.” Members of the Wauzeka-Steuben High School boys’ basketball team are, back row, from left: As-
sistant Coach Jim Wagner, Jeremiah Huber, Josh Rush, Hunter Heisz, Bradly Swatek, Jordan Huber, and Coach Matt Mezera. “We have an experienced group returning from last year,” said Seneca Head Coach David Boland. “Our goal is to continually show growth and im-provement as the season progresses. We want to develop the consistency to be playing very good bas-ketball by the end of the season.”
This is Boland’s 27th season as head coach at Sen-eca and he will be aided in helping to develop the Indians by Assistant Coach Al Bark.
The Indians will be working to improve upon last season’s 7-15 overall record and a 6-8 finish in the Ridge and Valley Conference.
Boland said he expects the Ridge and Valley to be a balanced conference this season, with North Craw-ford and La Farge as the favorites.
Seneca features eight returning letter winners and five starters back from last year’s squad.
Lucas Trautsch, a 6-1 senior forward, was an hon-orable mention player last season. Trautsch scored 166 points had 57 rebounds, 56 assists and 37 steals.
Jake Jones, a 5-9 senior guard, was also honor-able mention last season, having scored 200 points, grabbed 70 rebounds, handed out 45 assists and had 29 steals.
Kilian Boland, a 6-0 sophomore guard, was all conference. He scored 215 points, had 78 rebounds, 48 assists, and 46 steals.
Jordan Johnson, a 6-0 senior forward, scored 74 points, had 84 rebounds, 32 assists, and 39 steals.

Our team goal is to fi nish in the top three in con-ference.
Our keys to success are to take care of the basket-ball and play good team defense.
Last year’s record: 13-11 (7-5) conferenceOur team strengths are size, patience and lead-
ership. Our biggest challenge is replacing the 70% of the scoring we lost from last season. Other guys need to step up to fi ll those spots.
