Traxler played in 24 games

last year, Lillquist 19, and Kudrle 16. Traxler average six points and eight rebounds last season. He is also 6-feet, 4-inches, giving the Trojans three players 6-4 or taller. Jaxon Short is 6-5 and An-drew Nerud, who missed the season with an injury last year, stands 6-8. What is the most important thing you hope the team will accomplish during the com-ing year? Reach our potential. Last year’s Conference Champion: Waconia Which teams will chal-lenge for the conference ti-tle? Waconia, Orono, and Hutchinson. Where do you expect to fit in in the conference this sea-son? We hope to compete and give ourselves a chance. Last year’s section cham-pion (state team qualifiers): Lakeville South and Roch-ester Mayo were set to play in the finals when it got shut down. Which teams will be in

the hunt for the section title? Lakeville Southdown. Which teams will be in the hunt for the section title? Lakeville South.

Sport: Girls Basketball Coach: How many years and career record: Eric Specht - this is his first year in New Prague as head coach. Last year’s record/accom-plishments: Overall Record 21-7 (#3 Section Seed) and Wright Conference Champi-ons (10-0). Please give an overall out-look for the coming season: Expectations, goals, obsta-cles, etc.: This has been a very unique start to the season. As a new coach, the athletes are still getting to understand my philosophy/coaching style. In addition, I am still getting to know the girls and their abilities. Our goal is to con-tinue to improve every week, every game. Key returnees to this year’s team: Position, experience, past honors, statistics, etc: Rachel Russo - Senior For-ward - (4.4 ppg) - Rachel is our leading returning scorer from last season. As our only Senior, we look forward to Rachel taking over as lead-er of our 2020-21 basketball team. Rachel has the abili-ty to make a presence in the paint on both ends of the court. Payton Morris - Junior Guard - (1.3 ppg) - Payton is a natural athlete that has the opportunity to take another

step this season. Payton has a natural ability to put the ball in the hoop and I look forward to seeing her excel in game situations. Other athletes new to var-sity who will play important roles (Position, what they bring to the team): Hannah Wedeking, Junior,

Guard - Hannah is a nice athlete that will be asked to play several positions on the floor. We look forward to her taking more of the leadership role this season. I’m very excited to see Hannah grow as a player. Avery Hennen, Junior, Guard - Avery will be asked

to play an important role on both ends of the floor. She has a natural ability to score the ball from outside the arc. Avery will be important to the fast pace style of play we would like to play this sea-son. Anika Hatlevgi, Fresh-man, Forward - Anika is a very determined basketball player who holds herself to a high standard. I’m eager to watch Ani grow throughout the year as the game slows down for her. Ellie Hintgen, Junior, For-ward - Ellie is a versatile athlete that will be asked to play several positions for our team. Ellie plays with a high motor and has the abili-ty to make a presence on both ends. Sammie Kotek, Junior, Guard - Sammie is the defi-

nition of blue collar. She is willing to do anything that is asked by her coach. Sammie has the ability to really excel on the defensive end from the guard position. What are the key losses (players who graduated or are not on the team this year)? Emily Russo- Currently playing at MSU-Mankato Amanda Giesen- Current-ly playing at UW-Stout Bethany Vasecka- Current-ly playing at UW-River Falls Kate Seymour- Playing volleyball at UW-River FallsSarah Berg, Kayden Mulvi-hill, and Kaite Vasecka. What is the most important thing you hope the team will accomplish during the com-ing year? As we head into the sea-son, one of my personal goals with our athletes is they gain the understanding that win-ning isn’t easy. There is a lot of hard work and time that goes into a “successful” season. We have several girls this season tak-ing on new roles and, in some cases, they are being asked to do things that might be out of their comfort zone. It is in-evitable there will be hiccups throughout our season. Stay the course and improve ev-eryday... Last year’s Conference Champion: New Prague (10-0)

Which teams will chal-lenge for the conference ti-tle? Waconia, Holy Family, Orono, Hutchinson. Where do you expect to fit in in the conference this sea-son? After those top four teams we should fit in the next tier with Jordan, Delano, and Mound-Westonka. Last year’s section cham-pion (state team qualifiers): Farmington. Made it to the State Championship game vs. Hopkins before COVID cancellation. Which teams will be in the hunt for the section title? Farmington, Rochester Mayo, Rochester John Mar-shall. Where do you expect to fit in in the section? After the top three teams we should fit in anywhere 4-8. Most of the section teams return most, if not all, of their players from last year. Anything else that you would like to add? Heading into the year, I’m excited our athletes will get an opportunity to play this season. They only get four years in High School to play the sport they love. I en-courage our girls to take ad-vantage of every opportunity they get on the floor as you never know when this season could be put on pause.

Sport: Boys Hockey Coach: Brad Drazan, who has experience with the New Prague Bantams and the Trojan Girls Hockey pro-grams and is heading an all-new coaching staff for New Prague.. How many years and career record: first-year head coach Last year’s record/accom-plishments: 6-16-3 Please give an overall out-look for the coming season: Expectations, goals, obsta-cles, etc. The Trojans are looking to build a foundation for the future with a new coaching staff and a large influx of numbers from a strong youth program that should increase the depth of a program. The Trojans expect to be compet-itive in their last grind of a good Wright County Confer-ence this season before mov-ing to the Metro West next year. At the same time, a rig-orous nonconference sched-ule of AA opponents will help the program grow into maturity as a relative Class AA newcomer, with an ulti-mate goal of showing success in a very strong Section 2AA. We’re going to play hard and look to challenge our opponents on all corners of the rink. I am excited for this group to pressure the puck and play fun hockey, as it should be an enjoyable year for us.

The Trojans will have to overcome a loss of key lead-ers off of last year’s squad but will return 12 reliable seniors on this year’s squad, with most having previous signif-icant varsity experience. Key returnees to this year’s team: Position, experience, past honors, statistics, etc: Jack Wilmes, Senior, Cap-tain, (5 G, 4 A, 9 Points) -brings leadership and lots of skill to our team. Aiden Dorzinski, Senior Assistant Captain, (8 G, 6 A, 14 Points) - energy and skill to our team. Spencer Tupy, Senior, As-sistant Captain (0 G. 1 A, 1 Point) Will Andersen, Junior, (2 G, 6 A, 8 Points) - brings skill and offense to our team John Schmidt, Sophomore, (3 G, 1 A, 4 Points) - brings skill and offense to our team. Joey Vacek, Senior, (0 G, 2A, 2 Points) What are the key losses (players who graduated or are not on the team this year)? Jake Lee, Landon Peter-son, Jack Kreutzian, and Nate Picka. What is the most important thing you hope the team will accomplish during the com-ing year? During the 4 week pause, we spent a lot of time devel-oping our team identity. We are a team that will bring the heat each shift by committing

to the small details and hab-its on and off the ice. We are thankful for each day that we get to be on the ice, with that we will get better every day! Last year’s Conference Champion: Orono Which teams will chal-lenge for the conference title? Orono, Holy Family, Delano, New Prague Where do you expect to fit in in the conference this sea-son? We expect to compete for a conference championship. Last year’s section cham-

pion (state team qualifiers): Eden Prairie Which teams will be in the hunt for the section ti-tle? Eden Prairie, Prior Lake, Minnetonka, New Prague. Where do you expect to fit in in the section? We are in an extremely

competitive section, every game will be a hard-fought battle. We expect to compete for the section title. Anything else that you would like to add? We are thankful for the community support for New Prague Hockey. We will do

our best to broadcast as many games as possible on KCHK and live stream. We will communicate our broadcasts through our social media platforms.

We are excited to get back on the ice. We have returning players who have a good amount of experience but will also be having some younger girls who are stepping up into new roles. We are excited to see how our team comes to-gether and improves through-out the season.

We want to have an above 500 record and fin-ish in the top half of the con-ference. Last year’s Conference Champion: Holy Family

Sport: Dance Team Head Coach: Tiffany Sandhurst How many years and ca-reer record: This is Sand-hurst’s 2nd year as the head coach at New Prague. In 2018 and 2017, Sandhurst was the varsity assistant coach for the Faribault Emeralds - finish-ing 3rd in High Kick and 7th in Jazz at State both years. She was also the founder of the Prior Lake Dance Team program 2004-2007. Return-ing varsity coaches this year are Isabel Panek and Tara Brandt, who have been for-mer athletes of and worked with Coach Sandhurst for many years. Last year’s record/accom-plishments: The varsity Kick Team placed in the top 4 at most conference meets and invitationals they attended, and Varsity Jazz typically ranged between 3rd and 6th. One big accomplishment was receiving our program’s high-est point total in the history of the team. Please give an overall out-look for the coming season: Expectations, goals, obsta-cles, etc.: Our number one priority is the athletes’ health and safety, and especially this season with Covid cases at the forefront of our minds. We are extremely lucky and thankful to have the oppor-tunity to have a season this Winter, so we make every moment count. We have the mindset that “Nothing is Im-possible” if we work hard to-gether and put our minds to it. Key returnees to this year’s team: Position, expe-rience, past honors, statis-tics, etc: Our senior captains are returning varsity athletes Karlyn Glebe, Angela Mil-lette, and Noel Wieskus. Glebe and Millette have been a part of the New Prague Tro-jan Dance Team since they were 7th graders, making this their 6th year dancing togeth-er.

Both Glebe and Wieskus will be competing in our Var-sity Kick and Jazz Routines for the 3rd consecutive year together. 22 of the 25 athletes on our Varsity Kick Roster are returning Varsity dancers and 12 of the 14 Varsity Jazz dancers competed on our Varsity Jazz roster last sea-son. Other athletes new to var-sity who will play important roles: (Position, what they bring to the team): New to the varsity roster are Alis-sa Landwehr, Averi Wag-ner, and Ashlyn Erickson. Landwehr (10th grade) a key athlete on our Junior Varsity Kick Roster and Captain of our B Squad Jazz team last season. Both Erickson (10th grade) and Wagner (9th grade) showed a lot of po-tential through the summer and fall training programs, and have been great new ad-ditions to our Varsity Kick Roster. (10th grade) and Inga Lexa (9th grade) were both mem-bers of our JV Jazz team in 2019-2020. What are the key loss-es (players who graduated or are not on the team this year)? We had four Seniors who graduated last year: Kaitlin Bell, Sophia Eckness, Audrey Everson, and Joey Jacobson. Bell and Everson were both replaced in Jazz by new Varsity additions Lexa and Volkart, so we feel confident with that line up. What is the most important thing you hope the team will accomplish during the com-ing year? We hope to keep the positivity up, work hard, and have fun together. We have a great vibe on our team right now and it’s a great feeling to be so connected. We’ve all experienced something together no other year of athletes has, and they’ve re-ally bonded together because of that. Our hope is to keep

everyone healthy, and make it out on the floor for every competition this season. Last year’s Conference Champion: Orono was an-nounced as the 2019-2020 Conference Kick, Jazz, and Overall Champion last year. Which teams will chal-lenge for the conference ti-tle? In Wright County Con-ference they have split up into an East and West divi-sion this season. WCC West consists of schools from New Prague will be competing with Delano, Hutchinson, Mound Westonka, Orono and Waconia. This year will be a fight to the finish line be-cause all of these programs have talented athletes, a his-tory of being great competi-tors, and experienced coach-es. Where do you expect to fit in in the conference this sea-son? We have a lot of confi-dence in placing well within our conference this season,

and have the expectation to be in the top 3. Mound Westonka and Orono are both very strong Jazz com-petitors, but we have a styl-ized routine this year that once polished and perfected, will be outstanding. Last year’s section cham-pion (state team qualifiers): 1AAA Section Champion for Kick and Jazz was Eastview who went on to become State Champions for both as well. 2nd Place for Jazz and Kick was Lakeville North and 3rd place for Jazz and Kick was Prior Lake. Which teams will be in the hunt for the section title? Of course the three Section lead-ers from last season will be in the race for a medal again this year but New Prague, Lakev-ille South and Farmington all have growing programs, hun-gry to reach the top. Where do you expect to fit in in the section? We have high hopes to place in the top 3. With a Section finish last

season of 8th in High Kick and 10th in Jazz, we set some big goals for this year. We’ve been fortunate enough to work together over the summer which many oth-er schools’ dance team pro-grams were not able to do. We had a large turn out as well for the Fall performance program run by Community Ed, so all of that combined with the determination and hard work of this team right now should really pay off. We see New Prague finishing in the top 5.

Sport: Wrestling Coach: Dan Wagner. How many years and career record: 5th season as head coach. Overall record is 90-21. Last year’s record/accom-plishments: Last season we ended with a record of 28-2. We won the Rumble on the Red (58 teams), The Zelinski Duals, TCU Invitational, Orono In-vitational, placed 6th of 49 at the MN Christmas Tourna-ment, WCC East Champions, Section 2AAA runner-up (section champion was team state champion). Sent 7 indi-viduals to state. Program re-cord 6 place winners at state. Please give an overall out-look for the coming season: Expectations, goals, obsta-cles, etc. We lost a lot of talented and wonderful young men to graduation. Those individu-als cannot be replaced. How-ever, we have a core group of talented youth coming back that will fill in the holes that are left with the seniors who have moved on. I still expect us to finish the season as a top ranked team in the state in class AAA (the largest class in wrestling). My goal is always to get better on the mat, better in the classroom, and better in life.....that re-mains our goal this season. If we focus on those three

things, the rest will fall into place. Key returnees to this year’s team: Position, expe-rience, past honors, statistics, etc: We have four returning in-dividual state placewinners. Koy Buesgens (10) fin-ished 3rd at 106...he will be at 126 this season. Colton Bornholdt (10) fin-ished 4th at 126....he will be at 132 this season. Nick Novak (12) finished 2nd at 138....he will be at 145. Joey Novak (10) finished

2nd at 126...he will be at 152. Evan Anderson (11) at 220/285 just missed the state tournament last season. We have two more seniors to join Nick Novak. Carson Bittner will fill in up top very nicely for our team. Last sea-son he was a Rumble on the Red JV champion...which is a good indicator of success at the next level. We also have Jacob Vaughan who missed the past two seasons with in-jury. We also have junior Luke Dorweiler at 138 who was stuck behind a bunch of su-

per talented wrestlers last season. At 120 we have a sopho-more named Evan Farley. He was a 9th grade league state runner up last season. Other athletes new to var-sity who will play important roles (Position, what they bring to the team): See above.....Dorweiler, Vaughan, Bittner, and Farley. What are the key losses (players who graduated or are not on the team this year)? We graduated three state entrants: Will Busch 2nd at 195, Jake Trachte DNP 182,

and Max Scheffler 5th at 145.We also graduated several other HUGE key wrestlers: Colby Dunkel 139 career wins. Carter Bornholdt 64 career wins. Ethan Grego-ry 56 career wins, and Ryan Wagner 54 career wins. What is the most important thing you hope the team will accomplish during the com-ing year? Get better on the mat, in

the classroom, and in life. Last year’s Conference Champion: New Prague Tro-jans. Which teams will chal-lenge for the conference title? It will likely be NP and Waconia again this season. However, Hutchinson is al-ways in the mix as well. Where do you expect to fit in in the conference this sea-son? I plan to be wrestling for a conference title against Waconia on February 11th. Last year’s section cham-pion (state team qualifiers): Shakopee (eventual state champions) Which teams will be in the hunt for the section title? It’s looking like there is a good chance there will be a section finals rematch. Pri-or Lake and the Lakeville schools are always in the mix too as well as Eastview. Where do you expect to fit in in the section? I anticipate us in the finals again. Anything else that you would like to add? We have a younger team. Many look at us as a rebuild-ing year. I don’t see it that way. We have reloaded and look to do very well again. We will need a few younger wrestlers to step up for us but this team has a ton of poten-tial!

Coach Jake Norby, in his third year as head coach, has had just three wins in those first two seasons, but he is excited to begin year three with increased numbers and some experienced athletes at key positions. Norby’s coaching staff for grades 9-12 includes as-sitants Dan Seymour, Don Plaisance, Colin Shepp, Andy Kardoes, Eric Brever, Nick Schoenecker, Aaron Shetka, Michael Coldagelli, Joe Hemann, Johnny Joseph-son, Mark Lockhart, Kev-in Woitas, Michael Phipps, Chad Lukkes, Bill Gacken-heimer and strength coach Eric Feehan. Student manag-ers include Sydney Hemann, MaKenzie Dropik, Molly Blohm, Annika Ilg, Seth Dorner, Chase Smith, Garrett Gagner, Ray Parker and Aar-on Adamson The Trojans had 111 stu-dents in grades 9-12 report for practice this season, an increase of 15 from last year. “We are excited for what is to come,” Norby said. “We feel that we have a senior class strong in both leader-ship and ability. We have quite a few major contribu-tors to the 2018 Trojans who we are expecting to have ex-ceptional seasons in 2019. As a program, we made a huge emphasis on our offseason strength and conditioning program and as a result, we have a lot of guys who we feel will be able to help us at a high level because of the exceptional work they did November through January.” Another positive was that in the upper grades, the coaching staff was able to re-cruit some athletes who have not been out for football in the past, or who have been

out, but had not played the last year or two. “We are pumped about this because we are adding some very good athletes to the mix,” he said. Norby said there is a lot of optimism within the lower levels as they have increased the numbers at both the fresh-man and junior varsity levels. Key returnees to this year’s team include: Quarterback/defensive back Parker John-son, an all district player and the team’s offensive player of the year last year; Run-ning back/linebacker Mitch Callahan, an all-district hon-orable mention player; Tight end/defensive end Jay Sko-berboe, an all-district player last season; Running back/defensive back/punter Jack Kreutzian - last year’s special teams player of the year. Johnson, Callahan and Kreutzian are the team cap-tains this year. Other top returnees include: Nathan Osbourne - RB/DB, Jake Deutsch - WR/DB, Jake Trachte - OL/DL, Emmett Bartyzal - OL/LB and Ryan Schoenbauer - WR/DB. Some new varsity athletes who Norby expects to con-tribute include running back/defensive back Billy Geis, a shifty back who always does the job, and a dependable de-fensive back who had devel-oped a knack for making big plays; Marvin Halloran, a fullback/defensive back who had a tremendous offseason in the weight room, and Will Busch, a tight end/linebacker who took last year off after being a starter as a sopho-more. “We have been most sat-isfied with the way that this team responds to challenges with a positive attitude,” said

Norby. “On a daily basis, we challenge these guys to re-spond to coaching, control what they can control, take each practice and make it bet-ter than the one before. With-in our first four days, this group has really responded to these challenges and elevated the effort displayed in prac-tice along with the execution within the three phases of the game." During the off-season, the team attended the South Da-kota State Team camp, took part in strength training and agility and conditioning drills, and had a two-day mini-camp in July. they also had four Sunday Night football ses-sions over the summer. “As a football program, we hope to bring the essence of our culture to life. We want to work towards building an environment in which play-ers and coaches want to raise their efforts, discipline, and commitment as an individ-ual on a daily basis because of the relationships they have built within the team. We want to be a team that fights for the guy next to them day in and day out - good times or bad times” Owatonna is the defending Big Southeast Red Sub-Dis-trict champion, and while the two-time defending state champions were hit hard by graduation, they are expect-ed to make another run at the title this year. Mankato West, always a strong team, moves from the Blue to the Red Sub-District and will chal-lenge the Huskies. “We want to compete on a night by night basis by fo-cusing on the little things that win football games and concentrating on controlling what we can control,” said Norby. Chaska was the Section 2AAAAA champion last season, and Norby said the Hawks, along with Chanhas-sen, Waconia and Mankato West, will be in the hunt for a section title. “We will work hard to im-prove on a daily and weekly basis and be in a position to make a run at the end of the season,” Norby said.

The Trojans spent their season Friday, Aug. 30, traveling to Byron, which is playing a Big Southeast schedule this year. Their first home game is Friday, Sept. 6, against Rochester Mayo.

Sport: Gymnastics Coach: Mark Morphew (4 years as NP assistant, sec-ond year as NP head coach - 3 previous Head Coach experience at Mankato West prior to NP). Assistants: Doug Amund-sen (former HC) along with Anne Neidermeyer Last year’s record/accom-plishments: Section 2AA Runner Up, WCC Runner Up, One state berth with an Individual (Ava Barsness on floor) Please give an overall outlook for the coming sea-son: We have a great team this year. Our big freshman class from last year has a lot more experience and are ready for this season. We have a strong Junior class with many of those young ladies leading our varsity roster. Two senior captains (Allie Eischens and Brenna Sol-heid) to lead us on beam and in the gym. We are looking to take a shot at conference and sections again this year. I think we have solid prospects at both. Key returnees to this year’s team: Allie Eischens and Bren-na Solheid have settled into strong specialist roles on this team and will give us some much needed consis-tency on beam. Ellie Morris, Ella Barsness and Saman-tha Solheid are all gunning to be strong all around ath-letes this year. They all had strong showings last year on every even. Jadyn Klein is returning after a season end-ing knee injury towards the end of last season. She will be a force on both bars and

beam this year. We have a team with a ton of depth so line ups will shift constantly this year which tends to drive every-one to work hard and be their best. Other athletes new to var-sity who will play important roles: Taylor Lindblom is a con-stant on the varsity floor lineup and will continue to awe the judges on there I am sure. Hannah Kraft and Maura Erickson are fresh-man new to the team who have great potential on mul-tiple events. What are the key loss-es (players who graduated or are not on the team this year)? Emmalynn Dickerson was a strong presence on the team (she’s now a Gusty Diver!). Tina Shimota on vault is a big loss as well as Lauren Kitner on beam and in the gym. Danielle Solheid was a major leader in the gym and she is missed by all her teammates for sure. Ava Barsness suffered an injury preparing for this season and will spend this entire winter season on the mend. What is the most import-ant thing you hope the team will accomplish during the coming year? Obviously hoping to take a shot at the conference

championship and section title this year but I just want my team to keep working, keep a fire lit, stay safe and healthy, and stay focused on improving every day. Last year’s Confer-ence Champion: Wa-te r town-Mayer /Mound Westonka Which teams will chal-lenge for the conference ti-tle? Watertown and Waco-nia always give us a strong challenge and we welcome the competition. Where do you expect to fit in in the conference this season? We historically sit in the top 3. Last year it came down to who beat who be-tween Waconia, Watertown, and us. One loss could have ended in a 3-way tie at the top if I remember correctly. So it’s always tight. Last year’s section cham-pion (state team qualifiers): Lakeville North (also state champs) Which teams will be in the hunt for the section title? Our section has expand-ed, adding Bloomington and Eden Prairie. So I expect-ed New Prague, Lakeville North, South, and EP to all be strong competitors. But Lakeville North is the team to beat. They lost 3 of the best gymnasts in the

state this year so the doors are open. Where do you expect to fit in in the section? I expect that if we stay healthy and keep good mo-mentum throughout the year that we could end up top in the section. Anything else that you would like to add? I think this year poses many new hurdles to stu-dent athletes and I just want to keep everyone safe and healthy while maintaining a positive culture in the gym. If you have that your team can get through everything else.
