Lives We Lead - written by Judith Coulter
“Adelaide Jean-Pierre is from the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Lucia, the eldest
of twelve children. Her mother was a midwife and Adelaide accompanied her
mother to home births; perhaps this is what inspired Adelaide to become a nurse
when she grew up?”

Winter 2016
Dear Fellow Members, I am writing to ask for your support so we can continue to offer affordable programs and services to you and the community. GSAC helps break down the barriers that can lead to social isolation. Our services enhance and change the lives of many people through games, meals, courses, volunteerism and a sense of belonging. It is proven that social interaction combats depression, anxiety, poor nutrition, and social isolation. The National Seniors Council Report on Social Isolation of Seniors states that “Social isolation is considered a risk factor for elder abuse, including financial, and may increase fear of crime and theft; thus making seniors even less likely to participate in social activities.” The Gloucester Senior Adults’ Centre has been bringing people together for a common good since 1987. Offering opportunities to volunteer, take courses, have fun, laugh, make friends, share memories, get fit, and be a part of a great organization of seniors supporting seniors. I have talked to many members that have joined our centre due to the loss of a partner, and they have described the centre as a LifeSaver. One person told me their own spouse made them promise they would continue coming to the centre, knowing it would be a place where support and friends would be waiting. I have spoken to others who have mentioned that their adult children are very happy and relieved that their parents belong to GSAC and know that they are having fun and have access to nutritious meals with friends! We are a Charity and can provide Tax Receipts for gifts over $15. Over the last few years we have fallen short of our Fundraising target. I understand that cost of living is rising, but what cost do we put on fighting social isolation, or keeping current and connected to the community? Help us at GSAC to stay relevant and vibrant, please donate to the Centre. Warmest Wishes for a wonderful Christmas and New Year, Betty Joanisse, President

From the Desk of...
Dear Members, Welcome to 2016! It is a pleasure to share in the great fun and fellowship with you. I am always pleased and warmed by the laughter and enthusiasm brought to all activities here at GSAC. We are very interested in your comments, concerns and praise! Verbal comments may get lost or not get to the right person. To ensure your comments, solutions, concerns get to the right person in a respectful way, we have moved the suggestion box to the back wall near the coffee cups. The suggestion box is a great way to ensure your comments get to the right person and if you sign your name, we will call you personally to discuss any concerns or suggestions you may have to improve. I would like to take this time to WELCOME all New Members! We have an Orientation planned for January 15! Please RSVP at reception to meet other new members, Board Directors and staff. Betty Joanisse

Did you know…...2016 is a leap year, February 29th is a Monday. A leap year is when the year is divisible by 4 or 400 but not by 100. It's a general misconception that every year is a leap year that is divisible by 4. There are two exceptions to this rule: If a year is also divisible by 100 then it's not a leap year unless it's also divisible by 400. In other words every 400 years there are three years that, while divisible by 4 aren't leap years.
