What is the IB Programme?

• The International Baccalaureate Organization was formed in the 1960s to meet the needs of highly motivated students world wide. IBO’s focus on the development of the whole student is emphasized through the structure of the six academic groups, the importance of community involvement, and an independent commitment to education outside the classroom.

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a

better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous

assessment.

We have 3 Programmes here:

1. WPHS Pre-IB (9th and 10th grades)2. The Diploma Programme (DP)

• Here at WPHS for 33 years

3. The Career-related Programme (CP)• New as of 2016-17, in our fourth year

Pre-IB

The Pre-IB Programme at Winter Park High School comprises a number of separate but connected

strands which provide the essential building blocks required by students for successful preparation for the IB Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme.

Our job is to prepare you for the rigor and pace of the WPHS IB Programmes which are both 11th and 12th

grade programmes

Ninth grade courses

• English I Pre-IB

• Geometry I Honors, or Algebra II Honors (poss. Algebra 1 for CP)

• AP Human Geography

• Biology I Pre-IB

• Language acquisition – French/Spanish –level I/II Pre-IB

• DVP1 or Principals of Biomed or JROTC – if you’re planning the CP• Or Elective if planning the DP

• Elective(s) chosen from a list of pre-approved courses

On to Tenth Grade. . .

To advance to the 10th grade, an IB DP student must:• Maintain a 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA by the end of the

year

• Be Engaged

• Complete the Pre-CAS requirements

• Approx. 20 to 25 hours S –service

• Approx. 5 to 10 hours in C-creativity or A- Action

• Be ready to take Algebra II (or poss. Geometry if CP)

Tenth grade courses

• English II Pre-IB

• Algebra II Honors or IB Pre-Calc. (or poss. Geometry if CP)

• AP European History (DP)/AP or Honors World History (CP)

• Pre-IB Chemistry and/or Pre-IB Physics

• Language acquisition –French/Spanish –level II/III Pre-IB

• DVP2 or Biomed Human Body Systems CP• Or second Elective if DP

• Elective(s) chosen from a list of pre-approved courses

On to Eleventh Grade. . .DP or CP

To advance to the 11th grade, an IB student must:

• Maintain a 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA by the end of the year

• Be Engaged

• Complete the Pre-CAS requirements• Approx. 20 to 25 hours S –service

• Group 5 Mathematics• Math Analysis (HL/SL) and Math Application (SL)

• Group 6: The Arts• Visual Arts (HL); Music (Hl/SL); Theater (SL); Film (SL)

• or can replace this with Psych, Economics, Business Management (SL), Global Politics (SL), World Religions (SL) or a second science

• Extended Essay – over junior and senior year

• The IBO introduced the CP seven years ago

• Focus is on a Career• Here at WPHS Career Choices are:

• Biomedical Sciences

• DVP

• ROTC

• ROTC Aviation Program

• Possibly more additions coming…ask if you are interested

• Opens access to IB for everyone

• The CP is NOT necessarily a college prep program• The majority of students do attend a post-secondary school.

However some go straight into their industry

• Yes, students interested in the CP should apply for Pre-IB

What is this Career-related Programme…

• Must be in the Career Pathway in 11th and 12th grade• Biomedical Sciences 4 year program

• Digital Video Production – 3 to 4 year program

• ROTC

• ROTC Aviation

• Possibly more additions coming…ask if you are interested

• Must pass minimum of 2 Diploma Programme courses

• Complete the CP Core Component• Reflective Project – Essay on a ethical issue within your career

• Service Learning – choose events connected to your career

• Language Development – investigate a foreign language

Myths of WPHS IB

IB Students do 5 to 6 hours of school workevery night

• FALSE – it can range from none to 3 to 4 hours.

• It all depends on the student

• On the average you can expect approximately 2 to 3 hours a night

IB Students are not involved in extra-curricular activities

• FALSE – over 86% of out IB students are involved in extra-curricular activities, and probably is higher than that.

• The list ranges from Band, Basketball, SGA, Orchestra, Beta Club, Golf, Poetry Club Football,Chorus, DVP, ROTC, Cross-country, Track & Field, Theater, All of the different Honor Societies, Lacrosse, Psych Club, Volleyball, Swinning, Water Polo…..and on and on and on

• FALSE – High School counselors are required to identify if a student is in the most rigorous program at their high School…..that is IB at any school with the IB Programme

• 141 students applied

• 49 of those were IB students

• 44 received full admission (92%)

• Compared to 82 AP students applied• 28 received full admission (34%)

• The IB works closely with universities in all regions of the world to gain recognition for the IB diploma:• Direct online access for university admissions officers and government

• Some universities offer scholarships and advanced placement for IB students

• You are applying for the Freshmen or Sophomore Pre-IB Programme

Other parts to be aware of

• Must be zoned for Winter Park High School

• Expected to take a math course all 4 years of the programme

• When you accept your invitation, it is a full year commitment

• All Freshmen and Sophomores (DP and CP) are WP Pre-IB studnets

• If you are applying to be an IB Career Student, your WP Pre-IB classes has some flexibility

• Last year we had a waiting list for the Freshmen WP Pre-IB programme
