Message from the MDS President

We went for our first barn trail ride the other day and it was still February! This winter has been

such a gift! Warm temperatures and mild snow accumulation has led to bare roads, easier win-

ter work loads, and that hint of excitement for the

season ahead. Around the barn everyone is so excited about the show schedule we have set.

Memberships are renewed, show clothes have been arranged and re-arranged, and riders are

starting to think about riding those tests again! Everyone has set

their seasonal goals and are hard at work to make sure they are ready for the first show- that’s

just around the corner! I hope that excitement has infected your barns too! It’s so fun to be a

part of that and to let it rejuvenate you! We have a

full schedule of shows between MDS and USDF! It promises to be a great year!

The 2009 awards banquet was another perfect end to the season. Beth Brainerd and her daugh-

ters, Laura and Amanda, always do such a wonderful job! It’s a ton of work that lasts the whole

show season long. Please be sure to thank them when you see

them out and about!

MDS hosted Session A of Part 1 of the L judges program in February. It was a huge success!

We had 30 participants and around 30 auditors- the biggest class in USDF history so far! Pine-

land Farms was very generous with their facility and was integral

in producing such a great program! Thank you so much to them! Participants, auditors, and the

teaching judge all had a wonderful time! Session B will be coming up in April, with Session C

in May. Stay tuned to the website for more updates! We still

need some more demo riders for both weekends! Please let us know if you can help out!

We apologize that the omnibus isn’t out yet! There have been some minor complications that

have since been resolved. The omnibus should be to you shortly! Remember to check the MDS

website for the 2010 show schedule and updates! Puckerbrush leads

off the show season on April 4th!

Just a reminder that we are really trying to make MDS a more ―green‖ organization. You can do

your part by viewing the newsletter online. All members will receive an email when the news-

letter is available to be seen at www.mainedressagesociety.org .

Please help us keep the environment healthy and cut costs for MDS by selecting the email

newsletter option on your membership forms!

Happy Spring! I hope to see you down centerline soon!

Dressage training Riders seat, aids and position

In dressage, the rider uses his weight, legs and seat to influence the horse. These are known as the “aids”. In order to use the aids correctly, the rider’s body must be aligned

and balanced. From a side view, the ear, shoulder, hip and heel of the rider should in a straight line at the halt.

From the back, the rider should sit evenly on both seat bones and the length of the stirrups should be the same. By shifting his hips and his weight, the rider can ask the horse to move in different di-rections and step into different gaits. In simplest terms, the rider should have his hips do what he wants the horse’s hips to do and his shoulders do what he wants the horse’s shoulders to do.

For more specific information about the rider seat and aids, you might consider read-ing the following books available in the USDF bookstore:

CLINICS!

Gail MacCormack has been working on a number of clinics for us. Thanks, Gail!

Our first clinic will be at Serendipity Farm in Glenburn. The clinician will be Michelle Coad. Originally from Illinois, Michelle grew up for most of younger life in Waterville, Maine. She originally

started her riding with Sharon Poulin in dressage. From there, Michelle rode with some familiar names in

Maine dressage, extensively with Judy Westlake and Christine Joost.

In 1998 , Michelle continued her riding journey with Gina Krueger, a USDF Instructor, and was

hooked on her clear communication skills.

In 2009, Michelle left her job as a chemical engineer and has pursued her riding career full time working for

Gina Krueger in Georgia.

Michelle provides instruction in "classical" dressage and a term she refers to as "relationship"

dressage, adhering to the dressage training pyramid. She likes to keep the interaction between horse, rider

and instructor enjoyable as they learn.

SHOWS

We have three shows set up for next season. The June 13th Show is a Rider-Run Show and will be at Whis-

pering Pines. The judge will be Chris Joost. Our second show will be at Puckerbrush on August 8th with

Carol Poulin-Taylor judging. Bryn asked to be listed as Show Chair. She will post duties along with times

on the Puckerbrush website. Our third show will be September 19th at Stepping Stone Farms. Kris Nicola

has volunteered to be the show chair for that. She will run it as a EMDA Benefit, but it is not Rider Run.

Hooray! As we go to press, we are asking for a volunteer to chair the June show. If we have none, I will

organize that. Plan on sending the applications to me, Betsy Hudson, 322 West Broadway, Bangor, ME

04401. E-mail: [email protected]. Please call for ride times after 6:00 p.m. on June 10th.

These are Rider-Run Shows and you should expect to be assigned some show responsibility. You

may have a friend or family member perform them but, please do your part.

NEXT EMDA BOARD MEETING

The next board meeting will be held on Monday, April 5th at 322 West Broadwayt at 6:00 p.m. in

Bangor. Please call beforehand if you wish to attend, as date is subject to change. 207-942-5940

YEAR-END AWARDS

Please note that to qualify as junior riders for EMDA 2010 membership and Year-End

Awards, riders must be under 18 years of age as of January 1st of the show season. Riders must also

be EMDA members by the date of the first Rider-Run show.

From Both Ends of the Reins

As one ponders the upcoming show season, the first challenge is the slow planned progress

towards getting that pot-bellied, fuzzy hay-eater into show shape The transformation is so miracu-

lous - as are many quiet wonders of life.

It has been fun as I write this to enjoy the winter olympics, the world's top athletes flying

through the air with feigned ease. How thrilling to interact with ice, snow or a snowboard which pas-

sively (relatively speaking) cooperates with the participants.

The horse has been named the key to conquering the western hemisphere. The success of

Napoleon's armies was credited to the care he gave to training his horses and their riders. One can

read of the millions of dollars certain research programs have spent trying to invent a vehicle that can

travel in varied terrain, haul loads, provide it's own energy source...and look in your pasture. There

it is. Except, you can't turn a key and steer it. You have to learn tact, humility, and give and

take. And after decades of riding, one still has those moments when the horse turns to you and says,

―Thanks, it took you long enough to learn that!‖

For us with a passion for our horses, the community we share is also a blessing. Take time at

our shows and clinics to offer a helping hand and give a word of thanks.

SMDA is busy with plans for the 2010 season. We had a great year in 2009, and we are looking forward to kick-

ing off another successful season.

SMDA Banquet

In January we held our annual awards banquet at The Captain’s Galley in Old Orchard Beach. We had a great

turnout with 55 attendees. In addition to presenting our year end awards, our big highlight of the evening was a

slide show and presentation made by Taylor Noonan. Taylor is a 17 year old High School Senior who in 2009

participated in the North American Junior Rider/Young Rider Championships held at the Kentucky Horse Park. It

was inspiring to hear about Taylor’s journey to qualify and prepare for this big event, and we are so proud of her

for this major accomplishment.

Clinic – Breaking out of Intro and Training Levels

SMDA is sponsoring a clinic with Heidi Hauri-Gill on March 20. The focus of this clinic is to help riders move up

from Intro and Training Levels. Many of our SMDA riders are successfully showing at Intro and Training Level

and starting to think about moving up. We’re really looking forward to this clinic as the opportunity for some fo-

cused training to help riders develop consistent canter transitions and leads for the Intro to Training Level transi-

tion, and for our Training Level riders to get tips on sitting the trot, lengthenings, and the overall transition to First

Level frame and movement. The clinic will be held at Photo Finish Farm in Buxton, ME, and auditors are wel-

come ($10 at the door).

SMDA Spring Clinic with Heather Blitz

On May 1-2 we are hosting a clinic with Heather Blitz. This will be a big event, and we’re very excited and

pleased to be holding the clinic at Pineland Farms Equestrian Center. Heather Blitz is an international Grand Prix

rider plus a popular clinician in Europe, Denmark and the USA and often teams up with Mary Wanless and Hillary

Clayton. She has been in Europe for the last 3 years competing against the best in the world and often finishing

near the top. Heather focuses on the effect of the riders body and aids on the horse at all levels, and teaches in a

clear and easy to understand system of training to riders of all levels. She had an article published in

2010 Schooling Show Schedule

We are also gearing up for our 2010 show season. This year we will be holding four schooling shows at the Hollis

Equestrian Park on May 16, June 13, August 1 and September 19. All shows will be held at the Hollis Equestrian

Park. We are really pleased that in addition to our regular SMDA shows, there will be three additional SMDA-

affiliated schooling shows. Pineland Farms will be hosting two SMDA-affiliated schooling shows on April 18 and

October 17. Additionally, the Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization (SPHO) will be hosting an SMDA-

affiliated show on July 18 at the Hollis Equestrian Park. These additional SMDA-affiliated shows will allow peo-

ple additional opportunities to get scores towards SMDA year-end awards.

To help riders and their horses gain experience and reduce show ring jitters, we are planning to hold an ―Open

Ride Day‖ at the Hollis Equestrian Park on the day before our May show. The objective will be to allow riders to

come in and school in the arena on the day before the show in a relaxed environment. The dressage arena will be

set up in the morning and left up during the day. SMDA members can come and use the facility, practice their

tests, etc. for a minimal fee. Please check our website for details.

SMDA Grant Program

Over the years, SMDA has made donations to various causes, including our 2008 donation to the Hollis Equestrian

Park to help pay for the major upgrade made to the facility’s warm-up ring, and our 2009 donation to the Young

Riders program and several riders participating in the Dressage for Kids event. This year we decided to make this

a more formal process to make sure that SMDA Grant money is distributed in a fair manner to the most deserving

dressage-related causes. More information on the SMDA Grant program and applications may be found on our

website.

Volunteers

Last but not least, no communication from SMDA is complete without our standard plea for volunteers! We have

a lot of exciting things going on in the club, and it takes a lot of ―horsepower‖ to make it happen. The following

are needed:

Manager for our August 1 Schooling Show

Ring crews – set up crew for our June, August, and September shows (takes about 1-2 hours late Saturday

afternoon on the day before the shows)

Scribes – half day sessions at our four schooling shows (a great learning opportunity!)

Ring Stewards and Runners – help out for a half day at one of our shows – no experience necessary!

Please consider giving back to SMDA and contact any of our SMDA Board of Directors if you’re interested/

willing to help us as a volunteer!

WMDEA NEWS

Greetings!

WMDEA has had a successful 2009, which was wrapped up on date Jan 24 (Sunday)

at the annual year end awards and meeting hosted by Laura Falconer at lookout farm. First I

would like to extend an congratulations to all that participated and won awards! Scores were

incredibly competitive this year, which I find indicative of the growth of Maine’s dressage

riders. I would also like to extend a big thank you to Cassie Martin, who did such a lovely

job of organizing and running the awards program.

Moving on to club business, Cassie Martin has stepped down as club president and

Kate Holden Agreed to take on the role. Sandy Snow also agreed to take on the job of club

secretary. Beth Brainerd and Pat Martin are continuing as treasurer and vice president respec-

tively

As we enter a new year, we are hoping to be offering some additional educational and

entertainment opportunities for club members. One of our projects is an adult camp weekend

that will include a clinician, as well as other activities, to make for a fun and educational

weekend. We are also hoping to be hosting clinicians for all age groups and riding levels.

Our next meeting will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, March 17,2010 at OT to play

in Norway. For directions or for additional information please email me at holdenkath-

[email protected] . Please join us to share any ideas and to let us know what you would like

to see our club doing

hope everyone can begin enjoying some warm weather, as they prepare for competi-

tion and Mud season, and that everyone has a great 2010!
