Have A Holly, Jolly Christmas

Nicole Tougher, Reporter

Taking place on December 25, Christmas is one of the world’s most celebrated holidays. The

first recorded date of Christmas was in the year 336. A number of years later, Pope Julius, declared that December 25 would be

a day devoted to celebrating the birth of Jesus. Today, Christmas is still celebrated and a

favorite holiday among many people. Christmas today consists of months of shopping, both online and in stores, decorating a tree with bright lights and ornaments, giving gifts to people you love the most, drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace, and snuggling up in a warm blanket watching classic Christmas movies.

Although Christmas has changed much over the years, some things seem to stay the same like being with the ones you love most, celebrating religion, and singing loud for all to hear!

New Year’s Eve, Fireworks and All By Shawna Sinchak

New Year’s Eve brings with it many fun traditions around the world. One of the largest of the celebrations for us in the United States is the ball drop in Times Square, New York City. This tradition of celebration first started in 1907. While many people watch this celebration from the comfort of their own home or at a party, a whopping one million people view it in person each year! The most recent New Year's Eve in New York City had the lowest temperature since 1917 with a midnight temperature of 11 degrees.

Finally, not to be left out of the celebrations, we have a New Year’s Eve celebration in near-by Pittsburgh, called First Night. There are both family- friendly celebrations in the late afternoon, and a second celebration later in the evening for teens and adults! This local celebration has fireworks, a midnight countdown, live music, and many more festivities.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day By: Nicole Tougher & Mackenzie Shrum

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

On January

15, 1929, a man

who redefined our

modern history was

welcomed into this

world, Michael Luther King Jr. A few years later,

both he and his father legally changed their

names from Michael to Martin. Martin Luther who

protested the Roman Catholic Church inspired this

change in their first name.

Martin Luther King Jr. (also known to us

as “MLK”) grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. While

growing up, he noticed how unfairly African

Americans were treated… from being called

horrible racial slurs to not even being able to

drink from the same water fountain as others.

Martin Luther King Jr. knew that justice had to be

served. Martin skipped both ninth and twelfth

grade and excelled in public speaking, which

helped him tremendously in the future.

Martin would hold peaceful protests.

One of these consisted of a group sitting at a

‘whites only’ table until they were arrested and

another involved groups marching through the

streets peacefully. These protests gained a great

deal of attention for Martin and his dream of

equality for all races. On April 4, 1968, Martin

Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Although Martin

is no longer here, his legacy lives on and inspires

generations to come.

Valentine’s Day Statistics

By: Shawna Sinchak, Nicole Tougher,

& Mackenzie Shrum

Valentine's Day is a

time to express how much

you care about an individual.

Usually, people show their

affection with candy, roses, or with something that

“comes from your heart”. Approximately 150 million

cards are sent or given on Valentine’s Day making it

the second most card-sending holiday (after

Christmas). In addition, It is often considered a good

holiday to propose. That is why it is not shocking that

220,000 wedding proposals occur on Valentine’s Day

each year. In addition to cards sent and proposals,

there are more than 35 million heart shape boxes of

chocolate sold each year. Valentine's Day is truly a

sweet holiday you do not want to miss!

St. Patrick’s Day By: Callie Kluegel and Bret Vilage St. Patrick’s Day occurs each year on March 17. In

Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated first by morning mass, then parades and parties, and then to top it all off there is a night of music and fun. Americans traditionally cook corned beef and cabbage, but true people from Ireland will eat bacon and cabbage. Many people have small special while others go all out. Chicago even dyes its river green for the festivities!

Why is St. Patrick’s Day associated with the color Green? Actually, people really should be wearing blue not

green since blue clothing is a tradition for many Irish people. Despite the factual history about St. Patrick’s Day, there is also some fictional history. Have you

ever heard of the leprechaun? These little men bring much of the fun to St. Patrick’s Day. There is a leprechaun museum in Dublin Ireland with information and sightings of leprechauns since the 8th century. Legend says that leprechauns dress in all green with bright red or orange beards, and wear accessories like top hats, a belt with a golden buckle, and clogs. Each of these little creatures owns a pot of golden treasure that he must protect from the greed of humanity. Many people believe that leprechauns do not actually exists, but the leprechaun will always be a part of our wondrous St. Patrick’s Day experience.

Winter Dance By Emily Fortuna

The winter season has come and gone once again. The shopping centers were crowded, students were eagerly counting down the days for a break from school, and it was time for Norwin’s Middle School’s annual Winter Dance!

The beautifully decorated gymnasium (thanks to Mrs. Lyons and the National Junior Honor Society) was packed with cheerful, Middle School students in their formal attire. It was a night filled with friends,

laughter, and joy! Thanks to all of the photos, it is a night that will not soon be forgotten.

Middle School Teacher of the Year By: Jess Kessler and Taylor Podob

“Don’t count the days, make the days count.”

Mrs. Warren, the math teacher on the 8th grade Tiger Team, inspires students so much that many teachers, kids, and parents

nominated her for Teacher of the Year. This is a big deal. From personal experience sitting in Mrs. Warren’s class is exciting and new each day. We get our work done but we also laugh joke and get candy. She also helps you in activity period if you need it. One of her “sayings” is if you need help all you have to do is ask for it. Mrs. Warren deserves this award for many reasons like taking time and extra energy to help her students.

The Lives of the NMS Teachers By: Callie Kluegel

For this month’s

update on the lives of the Middle School teachers, we are featuring Mrs. Bennett. She is math teacher on the Jaguar team. Many of you probably remember Mrs. Bennett from last year, but then didn’t see her again at the beginning of the year. Well, Mrs. Bennett missed a couple weeks in the beginning of the school year to take care of her baby, who was born during the summer. Mrs. Bennett decided to be a math teacher because of the wonderful teachers she had as a student. These teachers inspired her as a student and so, she

decided to pursue teaching math as a career. Mrs. Bennett tells us that she was very excited about coming back to school to meet her new students and work with her colleagues. As much as she enjoyed being at home with her baby, she definitely missed teaching math to the eager Jaguar students. Welcome back Mrs. Bennett!

Norwin Reality Tour

By: Emilie Watson & Tori Marflak

The Reality Tour began in Butler County in 2003, by a non-profit foundation known as CANDLE Inc. The Reality Tour is a drug awareness and prevention program designed for parents/guardians and children to attend together. One of the main goals of the program is to “encourage families to keep the lines of communication open and real when it comes to talking about drugs. We want to empower young people with the knowledge to help them make the decision to be drug free”

If you have never gone on the tour, it consists of reality scenes, an informative update on the dangers of drugs, and an education piece presented by the local police about the dangers in our own community. The tour wraps up with real life testimonials from recovering addicts who bravely share their stories. The Lions Club sponsors the program and financially supports any needs that arise.

There are two more tours offered this school year on March 13 and April 10. Information and registration forms can be found on the Norwin School District home page.

Students in seventh grade were asked what kind of sports they play, or want to play during the school year. Many of the students surveyed had similar answers although the many of seventh graders chose a sport, which was not one of the four sports listed. The Redhead Takes the Stage By Nicole Tougher &

The fun filled musical starring

America’s favorite redhead, Little

Orphan Annie brought

to you by the Norwin

Middle School Theater

Company on February

15, 16, & 17. Annie JR

was exciting and

heartfelt musical you will never forget

performed by an exceptional cast

consisting of seventh and eighth

graders. Annie JR consists of your

favorite songs such as “Tomorrow”, “It’s

a Hard Knock Life”, and “Never Fully

Dressed without a Smile”. Some of the

leading cast members were: Ciara Giran

as Annie, Elizabeth Mahoney as Grace

Farrell, Traye Geissler as Oliver

Warbucks, and Anna Oestreich as Miss

Hannigan.

The musical, Annie, is set during

the Great Depression in an orphanage in

New York City. The story follows a

young orphan girl named Annie, who

has a rare experience brought to her by

billionaire Oliver

Warbucks to live in his

glorious mansion for

the holidays. Escaping

Miss Hannigan’s cruel

orphanage, she meets terms with a new

reality full of mischief, adventure and

wondrous fun. Eventually, the lovable

redhead warms the heart of the lonely

billionaire and the two embark on an

unforgettable journey, learning that

family is not only by blood.

The musical has two film

adaptations. The first film was made in

1982 and starred Carol Burnett and

Aileen Quinn. Another film version,

made in 2014, followed Annie as an

African-American exploring the city in

modern times. The two films have been

box office successes and both have

earned countless awards and

nominations. Norwin Theater

Company’s show was just as amazing

as these two movies with incredible

musical numbers and a show the whole

family can love together.

Why Veteran’s Day Programs Are

Important

By Jessica Kessler & Taylor Podob

Veterans are brave men and women who

risked their lives to keep us safe and free. All

veterans deserve to be honored and recognized for

their bravery. Although many schools have Veterans

Day assemblies, our middle school and high school

do not. We strongly believe that 7th-12th graders

should have this program in school.

Elementary schools and the intermediate

school all have a Veterans’ Day Program, but why

don’t the middle and high schools have one? We

think it would be more reasonable for the middle and

high school to have an assembly because they are

more mature and would take it more seriously. Also,

the students should be thinking about they want to do

after high school. Usually, younger students only

want to be what their parents are, but having an

assembly for older

students could allow

them to remember that

this is an option after

high school.

Do you know anyone with a family member in

the military? Approximately 2 million children in the

US have or had parents serve in the military. That is

a lot of kids! Having a program to acknowledge and

honor veterans could allow the kids with parents in

the military to not feel as alone and to see that other

kids are or were going through what they did, or are

going through. Having a veterans day program can

allow us to honor those who are serving and their

families for their sacrifices.

Having a Veterans’ Day program could

benefit the school district, our students, and their

families in many ways. Give us a chance to honor our

veterans.

DRUG ABUSE by Emily Fortuna, Reporter

We all have heard the stories about drug abuse. Project Alert provided great information, but there are some facts that are too gruesome for them to share. Nobody thinks it can happen to them, but I personally have had friends who threw their lives away due to drugs. Here are some horrifying facts.

Prescription drugs kill more

people every year than cocaine and heroin COMBINED.

One American dies from a prescription drug overdose every 19 seconds

In 2013, more high school seniors

regularly used marijuana than cigarettes as 22.7% smoked pot in the last month, compared to 16.3% who smoked cigarettes.

60% of high school seniors don't

see regular marijuana use as harmful, but THC (the active ingredient in the drug that causes addiction) is nearly 5 times stronger than it was 20 years ago.

The younger you are when

exposed to addictive substances, the more likely you are to become addicted, even if you only used once.

The average age teen boys first

try alcohol is age 11, for teen girls it is 13 years old.

Drugged driving is a major problem, with driving after marijuana use even more common than drinking and driving.

In 2012, nearly 3/4 of students

(72%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, and more than 1/3 (37%) have done so by 8th grade.

Teens who start drinking before

age 15 years are 5 times more likely to develop alcohol abuse or dependence later in life than those who begin drinking at or after the legal age of 21.

The estimated cost of drug abuse

exceeds $190 Billion.

DON’T: drink

DON’T: smoke

DON’T: do drugs

DON’T: be forced to do anything you don’t want to do

Republicans vs. Democrats Mackenzie Shrum, News

Reporter

Chances are, you sided with

your parents political beliefs without

any knowing consent. You were

unaware of the beliefs and principles

of being your parent's political

preference. Stop standing in your

parents shadow and step into the

light. This article will inform you about

the views and regulations of being a

Democrat or Republican.

Republican view

Republicans have

a far different

approach to many

different issues opposed to

Democrats. Republicans strongly

believe everyone has the right to own

firearms. The GOP (Grand Old Party)

also agree with homeschooling and

proper education. The Republican

Party can lean either way on the

stance of same-sex marriage. A

majority used to be strongly against

this idea but the numbers have

dropped within the years. The

Republican stance on immigration is

that illegal immigrants should not be

prohibited to enter the United States,

but that they should enter the country

properly. Republicans have their own

approach on political issues that differ

from the Democratic Party.

Democrat View

Democrats have

different opinions on the

issues facing this country

from the Republicans. Unlike the

Republicans, Democrats do not

believe everyone should own a gun.

They believe in a stricter system to

purchase a gun so that people who

pose a possible threat cannot own a

gun. They believe that everyone is

entitled to a proper education and

base their thinking on helping the less

fortunate children learn. They fully

support same-sex marriage and

believe it should be treated as a state

issue. They think immigrants are as

much as citizens as the rest of us but

agree with Republicans that the

immigration system is weak.

Now that you know a little more

about both sides of the political

parties, you may now possess a side

of this never-ending separation.

Democratic or Republican, the choice

is determined by your own opinions

and thoughts. After all, we do live in

America, a place where we have the

freedom to think and believe

whatever we want. Whether you side

with the Republicans or the

Democrats, “united we stand, divided

we fall.”

Review of : THE RAGNAROK BY: Evan Blenko

2017 has been filled with

superhero movies; Guardians of the

Galaxy 2, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man

Homecoming, and Justice League. Out of

all of those fantastic movies, I was most

excited for Thor: Ragnarok. It looked so

different from anything else we had seen

before. A buddy-road-trip film with Thor

and Hulk! Count me in! I am glad to say

that it did not disappoint in the slightest.

When the movie’s logo was first released

over 3 years ago, it looked to be a very

dark movie much like the original comic

story. Though when Taika Waititi was

brought in, he and Chris Hemsworth

mutually agreed to set a more comedic

tone. This tone did not impact the

accuracy of the movie. Even though some

elements had to be changed, it did stay

surprisingly accurate to the 2006 comic

event. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor

for his fifth appearance of the

character. There are many surprises and

new ways that the character has been

revitalized from his previous

appearances. This film also marks the

fourth movie that has featured the

adopted brother of Thor, Loki (played by

Tom Hiddleston). I usually enjoy his

character a lot but his character has

become quite predictable for being the

god of mischief. We have not seen Hulk

(played by Mark Ruffalo) in a movie in 2

years, but it was certainly worth

it. Though I feel his character is very hard

to be fully realized, this movie portrayed

him the best. With the trailers, it seemed

like some the 2006 comic story, Planet

Hulk would be mixed into the film. We did

receive some parts of the story, but not

enough to do the story justice. I, along with

many other fans, feel that Planet Hulk

would need to be its own movie to get it

right. For most of the MCU’s existence, it

has been criticized for lackluster villains

but this year has given us some of the best

big screen Marvel villains to date. Cate

Blanchett makes a wonderfully terrifying

villain as Hela, the goddess of death. I

feel she did not receive enough screen

time for the 2 hour runtime but it leaves

me hoping for the possibility to see more

from her in 2018’s Avengers Infinity

War. I would love to go into further detail

on all of the characters but to say the

least Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), The

Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Heimdall

(Idris Elba), Odin (Anthony Hopkins),

Skurge (Karl Urban), Surtur (Clancy

Brown), Korg (Taika Waititi), and many

others are excellent characters. The

whole story is a constant laugh but

problems do arise when they sacrifice plot

for a comedic situation. The phenomenal

movie has already surpassed the

worldwide box office for the other two

Thor movies, reaching over 700 million

worldwide as of

11/20/17. Over all,

Thor: Ragnarok is a

huge improvement

from his first two

movies and makes

myself and others

very excited for the

future of the MCU.

Zodiac Signs, What Do They Mean About You And Your Personality?

By: Bret Vilage and Rachel Russman AQUARIUS- January 20- February 19

Aquarius can be shy and quiet but at the same time can be energetic. They are deep thinkers and highly intelligent. If they get the chance they will use their mind at any time. Aquarius people can also see both sides of the argument which makes them amazing problem solvers.

PISCES- February 20- March 20 Pisces are the most gentle person you will

ever meet, they somehow see the good in everyone and forgive easily because of this. Of course a downfall of a Pisces is that they are very trusting, making it easier for them to get hurt. They specialize in the arts usually and like to escape reality in books or movies.

ARIES- March 21-April 19 Aries are known for their compulsive

attitudes and bad tempers. They are said to have the worst temper imaginable, try not to get on the wrong end of one. Aries mark something being energetic and turbulent. They need to be constantly moving and hate having nothing to do.

TAURUS- April 20- May 20 Taurus are reliable, patient, and responsible.

They love to be surrounded beauty and love and love owning lovely things. They are stubborn, but it could easily be mistaken to be commitment instead.

GEMINI- May 21- June 20 A Gemini is like Dr. Jekyl and Dr. Hyde, it

seems as though they have two personalities. One minute they are having fun and joking around, and the next they are more serious than ever before. As offsetting as it is, they are social butterflies and great people to talk to.

CANCER- June 21- July 22 Cancer can be emotional and sensitive and

will care for your feelings. Sometimes Cancer can have a hard time blending in with the world. They depend mostly on their heart to guide them. Lack of patience or love could cause a mood swing later on.
