Winter Concert Season2015-2016

Dear friends and supporters,It is a great pleasure to write to you as we are about to start on season number 27. That number is quite something, but even better is that I think last year was among, and very possibly, our best ever. As we all know, we had some incredible soloists, and our musicians were absolutely terrific! Musically, this was one of my most satisfying seasons I have ever experienced in all of my 46 years of conducting.

Our upcoming season promises to be another winner. Amazing soloists, great repertoire, and thanks to the McKnight Foundation, several new works by Minnesota composers.

Recently I was asked how much longer I intend to keep conducting the Sinfonia. My answer was very simple– “for many, many years to come. My health is good, my enthusiasm never waivers, I love the work. I love working with the kids in the schools, and our musicians are absolutely great! Who could ask for anything more?”

I want to thank all of you for helping us make the Sinfonia and our programs so successful and a continuing reality. And I want to thank our newest major sponsor, Hats and Mittens, who will be doing a spectacular fundraiser gala on December 30th, with the proceeds going to support our Music in the Schools. Please plan to join them and us, as this is an amazing and very generous opportunity that will greatly help us serve more children. Without all of your support, we could not continue to offer our concerts free of admission charges, and do the work in the schools that is so desperately needed. Why give to the Minnesota Sinfonia?Music in the SchoolsWorking with 10,000 students in 20 inner-city elementary schools every year and supporting state-mandated academic standards, Music in the Schools relates classical music to the students’ ongoing studies of their core subjects, and all at no charge to the students or the school districts.

Winter and Summer Concert SeriesGreat orchestral repertoire, internationally ac-claimed soloists and new works by Minnesota-based composers are all part of the Sinfonia’s “classical” offerings throughout the year. These programs are always free admission and open to every member of the community.

Community Family ConcertsFeaturing lighter fare, these concerts offer a mix of music from the movies, Broadway show tunes, marches, waltzes, polkas and popular classics. They are a terrific introduction of live classical music to our community. These performances are always free admission and open to all community members.

Touring Greater MinnesotaEducational and concert programs for Greater

Minnesota communities that have limited access to the arts. The Sinfonia’s tour performances are always free admission to the communities visited.

FestivalsTaking place in under-served communities, these

free-admission programs offer performance opportunities to local artists and musicians, and

allow children to work with the Sinfonia as part of their community celebrations.

Programs for Talented YouthWith a strong commitment to the region’s talented

young musicians, the Sinfonia offers contests for soloists and composers. Each year a group of

young musicians has the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside professional

Sinfonia musicians.

A Message from your Board Chair...

Nobody does what we do… and we do it so well! That statement pretty well defines the mood of our monthly Board of Directors meet-ings. While it would be easy to just sit back and bask in the accomplishments of this fine orchestra over the past three decades, we Board members are not of that mind.

Bringing experiences from business, non-profit management, fund raising, education, law, public service, and yes – music, the Sinfonia Board is excited with the growth of the Sinfonia and the prospects for the future. While the Winter and Summer Concert series may be the best known publicly, our Music in the Schools program captures the imagination of thousands – tens of thousands – of young people attending elementary schools in mostly impoverished districts. Each MIS program starts with a three-month curriculum, co-developed by the Sinfonia and local teachers. The curriculum combines classical music excerpts with academic concepts drawn from Minnesota state education standards, and focuses on a different subject each year. Some recent programs include: “History as Seen Through Music”, “The Magical Mysteries of Math and Music”, and “Music From Other Lands”.

In addition to providing you with excellent, well developed, musically brilliant concerts, the Minnesota Sinfonia touches the lives of kids for whom this might be the only time in their young and hectic lives they can enjoy the beauty of fine classical music.

And that, my friends, is why we on the Board of Directors are so excited! Thank you for joining in this celebration!

To serve the musical and educational needs of the citizens of Minnesota, especially families with children, inner-city youth, seniors and those with limited financial means.

The only professional chamber orchestra of its kind, the Minnesota Sinfonia dedicates over half of its services to children and their education. The Sinfonia plays concerts for over 27,000 people each year, always with free admission and welcoming children to every performance.

Founded in 1989 by Artistic Director Jay Fishman, the Minnesota Sinfonia is an independent, non-profit organization supported by corporate, foundation and individual contributors.
