Dear friends and supporters,My very best greetings, and it is with great joy that I am inviting you to join us for our upcoming 28th season. As most of you know, last year was a great year. We performed 60 concerts, which included our Winter and Summer Series - terrific, and I mean terrific playing by our orchestra, incredible soloists, and of course you were great audiences. And, we worked with 18 public schools - around 9,500 students, as part of our Music in the Schools. And perhaps best of all, everything was free of admission charges, and you brought lots and lots of kids. Thank you!
The Sinfonia is proud to meet all CRC standards
This upcoming year looks to be another winner. We will do five Winter Concert programs with more phenomenal soloists, our Holiday Family concerts, Summer classical and lighter performances, and we are planning for 20 schools, and 10,000 students. The details are below. So with that, by all means, do plan to come, and please invite and bring your friends and families. Word of mouth continues to be the best way for us to broaden and increase our audiences. I do hope to see all of you starting in just a few weeks.
My very best regards,

About the Minnesota Sinfonia
Submitted Photo
Music in the SchoolsWorking with 10,000 students in 20 inner-city elementary schools every year and supporting state-mandated academic standards, Music in the Schools relates classical music to the students’ ongoing studies of their core subjects, and all at no charge to the students or the school districts.Winter and Summer Concert SeriesGreat orchestral repertoire, internationally acclaimed soloists and new works by Minnesota-based composers are all part of the Sinfonia’s “classical” offerings throughout the year. These programs are always free admission and open to every member of the community. Community Family ConcertsFeaturing lighter fare, these concerts offer a mix of music from the movies, Broadway show tunes, marches, waltzes, polkas and popular classics. They are a terrific introduction of live classical music to our community. These performances are always free admission and open to all community members.
FestivalsTaking place in under-served communities, these free-admission programs offer performance opportunities to local artists and musicians, and allow children to work with the Sinfonia as part of their community celebrations.Programs for Talented YouthWith a strong commitment to the region’s talented young musicians, the Sinfonia offers contests and performance opportunities for aspiring soloists and composers. And every summer, 40+ young musicians are invited to work along side Sinfonia musicians for a week of intense rehearsals and a performance of a major orchestral masterpiece.Touring Greater MinnesotaEducational and concert programs taken Greater Minnesota communities that have limited access to the arts.

Why does an Orchestra need a Board of Directors?Even though most of us have played a musical instrument sometime in our past, we’re not musicians – and don’t contribute to the musical content of the Sinfonia. We do, however, support the orchestra by attending to the business side of our important programming.
Bringing experiences from business, non-profit management, fund raising, education, law, public service, and yes – music, the Sinfonia Board is excited with the growth of the Sinfonia and the prospects for the future. Most people know of our Summer and Winter Concert series – all of our concerts are performed in accessible venues and are completely free of admission charges. But our Music in the Schools (MIS) program captures the imagination of thousands – tens of thousands – of young people attending elementary schools in mostly impoverished districts. And yet is not widely known to the general public.
Each year our Artistic Director, Jay Fishman – along with educators – develops a curriculum matching music to academic subjects like history, math, and literature which is used by the teachers for up to 3 months. On “Sinfonia Day” the entire orchestra travels to the school, where Sinfonia musicians visit classrooms for informal “get to know you sessions” after which the students file into their concert halls (gymnasiums) for exciting, interactive and fast-paced concert performances of the music they have been studying for the past several months. Student choirs and orchestras often join the Sinfonia performances for what teachers describe as the “arts highlight of their school year.”
In addition to providing you with excellent, well developed, musically brilliant concerts, the Minnesota Sinfonia touches the lives of kids for whom this might be the only time in their young and hectic lives they can enjoy the beauty of fine classical music.
And that, my friends, is why we on the Board of Directors are so excited! Please join us in supporting YOUR Minnesota Sinfonia!
Sincerely,Bruce L. HumphrysBoard Chair
