    Advent 2011: People, Look East!

Advent is all about expectation. Were waiting for somethingfor God, specifically, to show up and to showus salvation and peace, all the things our hearts long for in the deepest sense of the words. This Advent werelooking East, led by the Advent carol: People, look East, and sing to-day, Love the Lord is on the way.

People Look East is a powerful call to wait in expectation. From ancient times the Church has faced east topray. Church Father Origen wrote that praying with our faces turned East symbolizes the soul lookingtowards where the true light rises. Whether literally or symbolically, the Church has generally faced east topray, in anticipation of the coming of the Lord. Our lectionary passages this Advent speak of expectationthefear of the unknown and the desperate longing for the coming of God.

People, Look East! We wait in expectation of a Savior!

    Moderators ColumnAmy Dale, Calvary Moderator

    3

This is my last Caller article to you as Moderator. I sincerely thank the congregationfor your support of me and your confidence in my leadership over these past threeyears.

Some of you knew that I was reluctant to become Vice Moderator, but was happyto serve under Kevin Hagans term as Moderator. When Kevins wife becamepastor at a local congregation, Kevin decided to move his membership in supportof his wifes church. As a result, after only a year as Vice Moderator, I (reluctantly)became Moderator.

I have not done it alone... Thanks to all for your contribution to Calvary.

I know that every single person in the congregation has taken a part in the ongoing success of our church. You have each stepped up to the plate and helped with welcoming new members, setting up for luncheons, coordinating events, leading worship, participating in small groups, teaching Sunday School, cooking meals, visiting members, balancing the budget, and other numerous volunteer opportunities that are too vast to listhere.

Additionally, special thanks to the church staff. They always say that theyre just doing their job, but each

one of them has gone the extra mile on many occasions to make sure the doors are open, people feel loved, worship goes smoothly, and the day to day activities of the church go off without a hitch.

I am honored to be Calvarys Moderator. Help me wish the in-coming Moderator much respect, manyblessings, and immense love. Thank you, Calvary!

    Peace, Amy Dale

150 Years of Proclaiming the GospelRev. Edgar Palacios

Calvary is turning 150 in 2012, and 150 years is a long journey. Within this time, several generations have been weaned. They have worked to make present theKingdom of God within their time periods and present and future generations willbenefit from their efforts. For us who dwell in the present, we are tasked with layinghold of this heritage and must become acquainted with our historical and culturalcontext and with our own way of living out Christian faith and proclaiming the Gospel.

Calvarys heritage is centered upon Jesus Christ and his kingdom. In this way Jesuslife brings with it both personal and global transformation. We began as an abolitionistcongregation, rejecting slavery as a basis for economic production and believed it tobe a contradiction of the Gospel and the notion of equality in humanity. Our grandiose

history has been for the glory of God. Now, it is our turn to be living stones of Calvary as it says in Luke19:40. We cannot simply reflect profoundly on this legacy, but we must start planning toward the future.

But we must ask, how do we proclaim the Gospel in a world filled with violence, war, climate change, andsocial injustice? The challenge is big and the temptation to ignore the world is intense. Each generation istasked with being loyal and trusting in Jesus Christ and the cause of Gods Kingdom. It is difficult to swimagainst the stream and we are called to work against hate and violence. However, we are called to dream theimpossible. We all play important roles and we can all contribute with God toward creating a better world.

God wants us to contribute to proclaiming Gods society Our world has a terminal illness: every day there ismore inequality and destruction of nature. Military and economic forces impose themselves on the legalstructures. More attention is placed on patriotic pride than love or reason. It is our job to plant seeds amidstthis desert, to give water to the thirsty, and to become part of the people of God with other faith traditions.Calvary is called to be a church that is a servant, a prophet, a missionary, and an educator. We are called toserve the One who gives us peace.

    Winter 2011-2012 Calvary Caller

In October, 14 Calvary members andfriends spent a week in San Salvadorand other areas in El Salvador on amission to learn more about the country, its people, and its challenges. Our groupwas led by Pastor Edgar Palacios, withAmparo Palacios Lopez as guide andXochitl Palacios organizing the trip onthe El Salvador end.

When we began attending Calvary in2010, we were impressed by thediversity of this church. Although I didnot know much about the ministry ofPastor Edgar, I was intrigued by whatbrought him and so many from El Salvador toCalvary. This was one of the reasons I decided totravel to El Salvador with Calvary.

In El Salvador, we heard from Pastor Edgar and hisfriend, the Lutheran Bishop Gomez, how pushingthe government in El Salvador to respect humanrights, recognize the needs of the poor, and stopkilling their own people, landed them on anassassination list of names of religious leaders, andhuman rights and peace activists the SalvadoranArmy would prefer to see dead than alive. PastorEdgar was warned that he was in danger, and wasable to get out of harms way. Only a few dayslater, six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her

daughter were murdered in cold blood by membersof the Salvadoran Army, the same forces looking forPastor Edgar. The horror of this became real for uswhen he took us to the Romero Center on thecampus of Universidad Centroamericana, site of themurders. We also saw the violence and the

Reflections: Calvary Travels to El SalvadorAshley Dalton

suffering inflicted on the citizens of El Salvador whenwe visited the site of the massacre at El Mozote andthe Museum of the Revolutionaries, both in the

Department of Morazn. We saw the repression inthe form of social injustice and poverty still faced bythose who live in marginal zones and rural areas andthe babies fighting for their lives in the overcrowdedNational Maternity Hospital.

Pastor Edgar also showed us a hopeful El Salvador, though. Yes, we saw the violence. We saw thehatred. We saw the injustices, but through his eyes, and those of his friends, we also saw hope. At thechurches of Iglesia Bautista Shalom, Iglesia BautistaRios de Agua Viva, and Iglesia Bautista Luz yVerdad, we saw hope in the outreach to theircommunities. Our meetings with the Vice President, the Supreme Court Justice, and Foreign Minister, allfighting to improve the conditions of the people intheir country, inspired us. Meeting with CalvarysShalom Scholars and the students at Centro de Artey Cultura in Sugundo Montes gave us hope for futuregenerations of El Salvadors children.

I think I speak for everyone when I say we were allaffected by what we learned about Pastor Edgar.Someone on the trip called him a Living Martyr, andI believe that is an apt description. I am so glad that Ihad this chance to get to know Pastor Edgar better, but that is not why we were sent to El Salvador. Wewent to learn the lessons he has to teach usthelessons about grace, humility, generosity, andforgivenesspeace, justice, equality and especiallyGods love. Here in the US, DC and at Calvary, wehave so much to learn, and I now know that we havea gift of someone who has so much to teach us. It isour challenge to make sure we are paying attention.

Our stewardship month and talk about Better Together may be past, but I hope that the knowledge that weARE better together will not fade with the passing of time. The Stewardship team thanks all who have offeredtheir commitment and pledge, but I wouldnt be doing my job if I didnt take a moment to remind those whohavent pledged that it is not too late. Everything we talked about-the importance of embracing our community

and our individual responsibility to that community and our work togetherthat is true every day. So please, ifyou have not yet done so, consider making a pledge of support for the upcoming year.
