Winter 2020 Probate Court in the Community The past few months of 2019 found Judge Stormer and the Probate Court out in the community. We could be spotted in many corners of the County. Thank you to all who joined us for a better understanding of the simple free steps you can take to protect your family, and heirs. We talked about guardianships and discussed the different advanced directives to protect your future and live your life the way you want to the end. Hope we are coming to see you in 2020. Adoption SpotlightBackpacks from Jockey

Adoption means finding your forever family. Beginning in October 2019, adoptees andtheir families in Summit County Probate Court received backpacks from the JockeyBeing Family National Backpack Program which has provided newly adopted childrenwith over 30,000 personalized backpacks nationwide.

As part of its support for adoption, the Jockey Being Family Foundation gives eachadoptee and their siblings a monogrammed backpack containing a teddy bear andblanket. In addition, each family receives a Parent Resource Tote with post adoptionresources.

The need for adoption continues to be great. At the beginning of October 2019, therewere 142 children in the permanent custody of Summit County ChildrenServices. Forty-nine of those children have no identified adopted family. Children in thepermanent custody of Summit County Children Services are often adopted by their fosterparents. All adoptive parents are also licensed for foster care.

Knight Arts Challenge Winner

Summit County Probate Court is pleased to announce that we are the recipient of a KnightArts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Our project,Curated Courthouse, is one of 16 winning project in The Knight Arts Challenge Akron.

Curated Courthouse will work to transform portions of the historic Summit CountyCourthouse, inspiring and giving respite through art to employees and visitors – oftenunwilling visitors - in the stressful environment of the courthouse. In addition to new artists,we will continue to highlight works of the developmentally disabled, mentally ill, and elderly.

The Knight Arts Challenge is open to all, and applicants follow just three rules: The ideamust be about the arts; The project must take place in or benefit Akron; The grant recipientmust find funds to match Knight’s commitment within one year.

Art in the CourthouseSummit County Probate Court held the third annual art show with Summit DD to bringartists of all abilities to the Summit County courthouse. The art show highlighted variousartists with developmental disabilities from across our community.

A special reception and meet and greet with the artists was held October 28, 2019 in thecourthouse atrium where artists discussed their work and light refreshments were served.Many of the works were sold with proceeds going directly to the artists.

Sections of the internationally celebrated AIDS Memorial Quilt were displayed in the atriumof the Summit County Courthouse August 20 through 28. The Quilt display, hosted by theAkron Pride Festival, Summit County Probate Court and the Court of CommonPleas, were three panels of the overall project maintained by the NAMES ProjectFoundation – the international caretaker of The Quilt.

The Quilt began in San Francisco 30 years ago with a single 3 x 6-foot panel and todayincludes more than 49,000 panels from every state created by friends, lovers, and familymembers to transform loss and heartbreak into hope and healing. The entire quilt consistsof 54 ½-tons of handmade tapestry that stands as a memorial to more than 96,000individuals lost to AIDS.

Volunteers from Akron Pride were on hand daily to answer questions about the Quilt andgreet those who came to visit the display.

On the TableWhat can WE do together to create a stronger community? Thousands came together inconversations of On the Table Greater Akron October 3, 2019. The Courthouse eventwas hosted by several Summit County Judges and the Summit County Prosecutor’sOffice. Probate Court Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer joined Common Pleas Judges,Judge Alison M. Breaux, Judge Amy Corrigall Jones, Judge Joy Oldfield, JudgeSusan Baker Ross and Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh in providinglunch and discussion on this year’s On the Table focus topics which included manypertinent to the courts: Diversity, Equity and Social Inclusion, Drug & Addiction, and OurAging Seniors.

Read to me day!

Several of the Probate staff volunteered to read in an Akron Public Schools classroom onNovember 7, 2019 for a half an hour during the United Way of Summit County's Read toMe Day. Volunteers brought a library book, a book of their own, or a new book to donate tothe classroom.You can tell by the smiles that this is one of our favorite opportunities.

The day will include breakfast and lunch and feature TWOnationally recognized speakers, an unveiling of the Age Friendly Akron initiativesurvey results., and much more.

Saturday May 9, will be a senior expo, free to the public, with services for seniors,and those who love them, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Woodridge ElementarySchool, at 4351 Quick Rd, 44264. The day will include public service booths, break-out sessions and other activities targeted to seniors, their caregivers, and theirfamilies. Booths are available with everyone providing a service that day to seniorsas well as informing the public about the vibrant living possible as we age inSummit County.
