Literacy Kindergarten through 2nd grades will be diving into learning about adjectives to help us describe characters in new and exciting ways. We’ll also be working on answering the 5W’s of a story: who, what, where, when, and why to build on our comprehension skills. Grades 3 through 5 are working on strategies and skills to help them properly answer text dependent analysis questions. We’ll be creating a vibrant foldable to use as a reference during the duration of this lesson. Students will work together to master each part of the strategy during each lesson. Visual Art Kindergarten is finishing up their adorable painted polar bears, while first graders wrapped up an abstract painting where they learned about the primary and secondary colors. Second grade just completed their own illustration based on the classic children’s story The Snowy Day. Next, students in grades K-2 will begin working on self portraits. We will talk about how to make portraits look realistic, and use a few fun new art materials. Third grade created whimsical cityscapes inspired by contemporary artist Jim Dine, as well as large-scale snowmen where they were able to experiment with new materials including paint daubers, chalk pastel, and paint sticks. Next, they’ll be learning about the printmaking process as they make self portraits. Fourth graders are very excited to begin working on three-dimensional masks. In class, we discussed many reasons why people wear masks and students were challenged to design a mask that has personal meaning. They’ll be painting their masks and then adding embellishments with a variety of exciting craft materials. After lots of hard work, fifth grade is finishing up their sewing unit. They worked hard designing and creating their own stued creatures, and learned to sew in the process. Next, they will be learning about geometric and organic shapes as they explore the art of metal tooling. Health Topics to be covered this quarter in Health class include: Germ prevention Dental hygiene Fire safety and prevention Nutrients and how they help the body Tobacco use and consequences #BEMOORE WINTER 2020 J.H.
