Are you thinking back to your time as a 4-H’er? Club leaders Rosemary and Bev quickly come to my mind; Mom and Dad, of course; Norma and Patti, our fantastic 4-H staff in Fayette County. And I could never forget Judy, my friend’s mom, who signed us up and drove us to everything. I could fill this entire piece with all of the caring adults that shaped my life. They are the reason I volunteer and support 4-H.

Caring adults are an essential element in the 4-H equation: empowering youth to reach their full potential through youth-adult partnerships and research-based experiences. As a 4-H leader and County Youth Committee member in Boone County, I have been trained as a volunteer and surrounded by others that are hands-on volunteers with our kids. Accepting

a position as a trustee on the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board has given me experiences with another critical group of caring adults. Before saying yes to my invitation, I did some research to make sure I would be giving my volunteer time to an active board. Assuming volunteer time means caring, and this group and its past members care a lot!

Our mission: The Iowa 4-H Foundation provides financial resources for youth development through 4-H. This is a simple yet solid mission. Not surprisingly, year after year, as we did our strategic planning and worked through the business of the Board of Trustees, one item always consumed our meetings: camp. This year, caring adults made a very difficult decision. The history and emotional love of camp was over-shadowed by our responsibility to all 4-H’ers.

Our beautiful 1,000+ acre camp property in Boone County, representing almost 75 years of history and memories, was put up for sale. This decision was not made lightly. In fact, it was only made after decades of uncertainty and exhausting all reasonable efforts. It is our mission that encourages us as we move forward. We must provide financial resources for tens of thousands of 4-H youth, not only the few hundred that were able to use Clover Woods.

Do you know the four priority areas of 4-H? They are STEM, Healthy Living, Leadership & Civic Engagement, and Communication & the Arts. The 4-H Foundation, through the efforts of our Executive Director Emily Saveraid, has had a lot of success pairing industry in Iowa with STEM programs. Some of the programs in the other priority areas are more difficult to coordinate with a donor. A successful property sale will allow us to generously support programs in all of the priority areas. We plan to use the proceeds to ensure funding for the programs that will reach the 4-H’ers of today. Letting go of Clover Woods has the potential to increase the impact of 4-H in Iowa well beyond our imagination.

There were many serious conversations prior to announcing the sale of Clover Woods. While many were sad and memory-filled, nearly all of our communications have been supportive and understanding. Thank you all for your gracious and abundant support of Iowa 4-H. It is humbling to be part of such a generous group of caring adults.

Sincerely,

Vicki Heiller, President

Clubs across Iowa came together to raise $20,626.99 for the 34th annual 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign.

In the past 34 years, Iowa 4-H members have given over $900,000 to provide financial assistance for 4-H’ers to attend camps or conferences, help members pay their annual 4-H fee, and fund speakers and entertainment at the State 4-H Youth Conference.

The State Council recognizes counties by area that raised the most dollars per member, most dollars overall, and those that were the most improved (largest overall increase in giving by percentage over the previous year). Pitching for Civil Discourse Cooking Up New Things with Iowa 4-H

Through 4-H, young people gain life skills such as critical thinking, communication and problem solving. These skills were on display every day at the Iowa State Fair as young entrepreneurs in yellow t-shirts vied for soybean votes at the Iowa State University booth in the Varied Industries Building. These were the 150 participants in the Great Iowa State University STANDING InnOVATION Pitch-Off. Fourteen groups went head-to-head each day, Aug. 8 through Aug. 15, presenting their innovative and entrepreneurial ideas, and answering audience questions. Fair-goers’ votes selected the semifinalists.

The 56 semifinalists then competed in front of a panel of judges in hopes of winning the Best in Show Award of $5,000. Seven more groups were selected as category winners, each with a prize of $2,500, and four others were selected for Honorable Mention Awards worth $1,000. Each entrepreneur, regardless of how they placed in the competition, received a $500 award for participating.

Among the participants were 4-H’ers Owynn McNutt (Franklin County), Charlize DeArmond (Mahaska County) and Nicholas Stocks (Delaware County). Their pitch idea was Civil Teen Discourse: Discussions for Teens Led by Teens.

The idea for a civil discourse workshop came directly from their experience at Citizenship Washington Focus, a 4-H Leadership and Civic Engagement Program for high school youth

Entrepreneur Award winner, receiving $2,500 to make their workshops actually happen. DeArmond said she is proud of her team and knows the money can accomplish a lot.

Castillo says, “Amazed and delighted are two emotions that I personally felt. That the judges believed in the idea for civil discourse workshops for teens was affirming!”

Next steps for the group involve planning the education and piloting the discussion workshops. The workshops will teach others to listen to find common ground and show respect. Further, the teens hope this education will rub off on adults in their communities.

“It was a great experience, and I can't wait until next summer to start teaching teenagers about civil discourse. I feel like this is a very important thing to know - it can help you in your life as you grow in so many ways,” DeArmond said.

Not only did current 4-H’ers excel in the pitch competition, but 4-H alumni brought their ideas as well. Congratulations to brothers Mitchell and David Hora, Washington County 4-H alumni, who won the $5,000 Best in Show Award for the startup company Continuum Ag. Rebecca Lyons, Clinton County 4-H alum, won an Honorable Mention Award for her nonprofit, Lunchsox.

What makes a good chili? Through a new partnership with the International Chili Society (ICS), Iowa 4-H’ers had the opportunity to find out and develop their own recipes at regional 4-H Chili Cook-Offs. The competitions were held in Ottumwa and Ames and were open to not only 4-H’ers, but all community youth, to showcase the variety of programming 4-H has to offer. Making it easy to participate, ICS provided tables, tents and cooking equipment, while Iowa 4-H supplied all the food ingredients, prizes and educational sessions during the day.

At the regional events, the youth cooks were taught by the ICS CEO Scott Toland. They learned about the strategy of adding certain ingredients and what spices create a flavorful recipe. Youth were able to challenge themselves and be creative during the competition. Guest judges were invited to critique and evaluate the chilis. Judges ranged from local firefighters and Extension staff to 4-H alumni and those who just love a good bowl of chili!

“The best part of the event was that it was a fun way to learn and discover new skills. The youth all had a good time whether they placed in the top three or not,” said Laura Liechty, Iowa 4-H Healthy Living Program Specialist. “Many lessons were learned in this more competitive style of cooking, and it was fun to see youth embrace this opportunity and be proud of the concoction they produced.”

Twenty youth took advantage of the local and regional events. Ten then went on to compete in the World Championship Chili Cook-Off in Ankeny, Sept. 7 and 8.

“I hope this experience boosted confidence in our youth participants and taught them to be curious about how they can adapt or change recipes to make them unique,” Liechty said.

By sponsoring 4-H Chili Cook-offs, the ICS can work with youth in Iowa, bringing awareness to agriculture, food selection and safe preparation, healthy nutrition, life sciences, and building character through personal experiences at friendly cooking competitions.

“Helping youth create a recipe using fresh and healthy ingredients that can be shared and enjoyed by family and friends is very rewarding,” says Toland. “The ICS is excited to work with Iowa 4-H because the missions of our organizations are closely aligned.”

The International Chili Society supports positive youth development and has a desire to help ensure that all youth have the opportunity to take part in an experience that increases their passion for food, their skills in cooking, and their confidence and pride in their ability to succeed.

Thank you to ICS for their partnership this summer!

held at the National 4-H Center in Washington, D.C. All three 4-H’ers attended this trip earlier in the summer.

“The delegation was fairly unanimous in the desire for more time to explore challenging issues with their peers. Several commented they don’t have the opportunity for conversations with friends at home like they had during the program,” said Gail Castillo, Youth and 4-H Field Specialist and the adult mentor for the group. “I believe [the idea] came from their desire to see civil conversations occur within their peer groups at home.”

DeArmond says as teenagers, they see people arguing and not being civil in their daily lives, on social media or the news. It is all around, and it is not setting a good example for their generation. The teens want to teach other teens to listen and understand another person’s opinion and why they believe the way they do by providing workshops around the state.

The Pitch-Off was a great opportunity to find “seed money” to make ideas into reality.

“My favorite part about the competition was getting to share what we wanted to do. We really didn't know if people would listen because we are just teenagers. But they did. And they were very supportive of what we are doing,” said DeArmond.

The group made it through two rounds of the competition and was selected as the Youth

*New for 2019

We are happy to welcome Debbie Nistler to the Iowa 4-H Program as the new 4-H Youth Development State Program Leader. We asked her a couple of questions to get to know her better.

Share about your family: My husband and I have three children. They are ages 25, 24 and 19. Our oldest served five years in the Marine Corp and is now in college at Florida State. Our middle child graduated from the University of Florida and is teaching in Thailand. Our youngest is in her second year of college.

Something that excites you about moving to Iowa: A real fall. My husband and I grew up in Oregon, and we miss sweaters and chilly mornings.

Something you’ll miss about Florida: Good friends and warm winters. We have not sold our little farm, so we will have opportunities to defrost.

Biggest challenge in your new role: Bringing voices to consensus. I think we may have some challenges with getting everyone on the same page. This will be one of my most important jobs.

Someone you admire: I have many people I admire. The first one that comes to mind is President Jimmy Carter. He has spent his life in service to others. I think this is an amazing testament to true servant-style leadership.

First job: My very first paid job was picking strawberries. I did this starting at age 10 and continued into my teens.

Person who had the most influence on you growing up: As a farm girl, my dad had a strong influence on my work ethic and love of agriculture.

Best 4-H memory: Showing at the county fair. I showed Herefords and Suffolks and have so many great memories.

Fun fact: I love traveling, and I am a bit of a Star Wars geek.

Something you collect:I collect turtle things... I love turtles.

Anything else:I am a lifelong 4-H’er with a heartfelt passion for 4-H and youth work.

Iowa County’s Nancy Welsh Named 2019 Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader

The Successful Farming/Loren Kruse Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader Award is presented each year to an adult volunteer who has encouraged, challenged and inspired Iowa 4-H members to achieve their fullest potential. This year’s recipient is Nancy Welsh of Williamsburg in Iowa County. Welsh is the current Poultry and Rabbit Superintendent of the Iowa County Fair.

Current or past 4-H members make award nominations. Welsh was nominated by her daughter and past 4-H member, Bethany Gorsch.

Gorsch says, “Although she is my mom, she has also been a great role model and leader for many kids in Iowa County. I would always witness the kindness and generosity that my mom had for all the other 4-H’ers. She influenced me to want to be a better person and to always help others. As a 4-H member, she challenged me and my siblings to do our best and never give up. She would challenge her club members and help them just like she did for us.”

Nancy was the Iowa County Hilton Willing Workers 4-H Club leader for 15 years. Before leading the group, Nancy was a 4-H’er herself. During her time as a 4-H leader, Nancy focused on teaching youth the importance of serving their community. Nancy’s dedication to giving back rubs off on the 4-H’ers she oversees in projects such as new landscaping for the Iowa County fairgrounds, building new rabbit cages and a new fundraising campaign for the county.

Although Nancy retired from her role as club leader a year ago, she still goes above and beyond to coordinate workshops and programs for the 4-H’ers of Iowa County. This includes coordinating annual poultry and rabbit workshops for youth to expand their communication and leadership skills, and being a valued volunteer for the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Nancy was also honored by being inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2019.

Outside of 4-H, Nancy continues to be a giving individual through her work with students at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She extends her kindness to international students who are in dental school by making them feel comfortable and welcome. Nancy even invites the students to visit her family farm so they can get a taste of Iowa agriculture.

The Successful Farming/Loren Kruse Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader Award comes with a $1,000 grant, which the honoree can designate back to Iowa 4-H through their club, county or state foundations. The award was established by Meredith Corporation and the Edwin T. Meredith Foundation through the Iowa 4-H Foundation in honor of Loren Kruse’s retirement as editor-in-chief of Successful Farming magazine. Kruse credits the outstanding guidance provided by his 4-H club leader for the successes he achieved as an adult.

There is always something unique happening at the Iowa State Fair! Bayer, a 4-H partner, presented a fun afternoon filled with hands-on STEM activities in the 4-H Building at the Iowa State Fair on Friday, Aug. 16. Youth were able to skewer inflated balloons, launch Alka-Seltzer-filled plastic cups into the air and create butterflies using chromatography. The afternoon was made extra special by surprising guest appearances by country singer Luke Bryan and Governor Kim Reynolds.

“I loved the 4-H lock-ins, poultry judging and the 4-H camps, especially the bus rides there,” Bryan said, when reflecting on his own 4-H experience in Georgia.

“Experiencing science in motion gets kids excited about STEM projects early,” said Darren Wallis, North American vice president and head of communications for the CropScience division at Bayer. “This is our second year at the Iowa State Fair with 4-H, and we plan to continue this tradition to allow kids to have a fun science experience.”

Thank you to Bayer for their support and for encouraging STEM development in Iowa youth through 4-H!

Bacon Buddies Bridges Gaps at the Iowa State FairThe following is based on an article in the Farm Journal’s Pork issue. Find the full article and photos at www.porkbusiness.com/article/bacon-buddies-goes-viral-iowa-state-fair

When you hear the term “Bacon Buddies,” what comes to mind? It might sound like the next food truck or tasty treat. But Bacon Buddies is actually the name of a brand-new partnership that launched this year at the Iowa State Fair. This program is a showmanship contest that provides Iowans with special needs the opportunity to work with a 4-H or FFA member and show a pig at the Iowa State Fair.

Kylee Brown, a 4-H’er from Dallas County, noticed that the show ring could benefit from

diversity, especially from the special needs community. She sought out support from the Iowa Pork Producers Association and Special Olympics Iowa to help organize the powerful new event.

“No matter where you came from, we’re all the same,” Brown says. “So we all need to be able to reach out and give each other opportunities and not just keep it to ourselves.”

Special Olympic athletes were paired with 4-H and FFA swine exhibitors to learn the ins and outs of showing a pig at the Iowa State Fair. Some of the pairs met prior to the Fair so athletes could experience more of the process of preparing, washing and showing pigs. This built camaraderie with the 4-H and FFA youth.

“Overall acceptance is the ultimate goal,” says John Kliegl, president of Special Olympics Iowa and member of the Bacon Buddies committee. “It’s not only the opportunity to get in [the ring], but our athletes are going to be viewed as equals.”

Once the show started, the exhibitors paraded their pigs around the ring. No winners were chosen – it was an opportunity to celebrate everyone.

The event was a huge success, bringing in many who had never before set foot in a pig barn.

“I was overwhelmed when we had more people at Bacon Buddies than at the grand drive,” Kliegl says. “The place was packed, not an empty seat in the barn. People stood three to four deep on the rails.”

Not only did the show allow 4-H and FFA members to share how much they care about their pigs, but it also allowed them to show how much they care about others.

“Participants were able to try something new and experience something that they might not have been comfortable doing on their own. Meanwhile, the 4-H and FFA mentors learned more about respect, compassion and leadership by sharing an activity they love,” says Brett Kaysen, assistant vice president of sustainability for the Pork Checkoff, who helped during the show.

The Bacon Buddies committee hopes these types of events pick up steam at the county fair level to allow more Iowans with special needs to experience working with pigs and 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Kliegl says that it’s been eye-opening to the greater public who have shared that they had no idea what the people in the pig barn were doing before coming to Bacon Buddies. Now they have a better idea, he says.

Clover Woods Camp Sale UpdateOn October 25, 2019, the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees voted to sell the camp property in its entirety to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF). The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation is a statewide nonprofit conservation organization that works with private landowners and public agencies to protect and restore Iowa’s land, water and wildlife. This decision was made by the Board of Trustees because of a competitive bid from the INHF and that it honored the legacy of the property.

The sale of the Boone County Camp opens new doors for the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The proceeds of the sale will be permanently endowed to provide annual income to support 4-H’ers and the Iowa 4-H Program. Funds will also be set aside to support 4-H camping programs and camper scholarships to allow young people to attend a 4-H camp, wherever that may be. We are excited for the opportunity to invest in new, innovative programming, support local opportunities and make 4-H accessible to all young people across the state of Iowa.

Thank you again for your support of Iowa 4-H’ers. We look forward to working with you to continue to provide opportunities for Iowa’s youth through 4-H—the mission of the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
