Elder Anne Wilson, of Manitou Rapids, tells us about Biskaabiyang, remembering and returning to your teachings. She tells us that this concept is about remembering who we are. She asks us to take a good look at ourselves and think about how we live our lives. As Anishinaabe people, we have been told to live with Mino Bimaadiziwin, good life teachings. We are to remember our teachings, be respectful of all our relations, honour the Earth, and think with a good Anishinaabe mind, basing our actions in Anishinaabe knowledge. Anne tells us that Biskaabiyang, remembering your teachings, means letting go of mainstream habits if you must to remember your Anishinaabe mind. We must remember those who have gone on to the spirit realm, those who lived on the land with the language and teachings and encouraged us to move forward. We must watch those who model these teachings today.

Based on academic achievement and attendance, the Biskaabiyang Bursary will see each of these students receive $1000 to be disbursed in two installments of $500.00 in December 2017 and February 2018.

We congratulate these students on their outstanding achievement!

Practical Nursing Program

How time flies!Semester 1 has ended and the Practical Nursing students at Seven Generations Education Institute enjoyed a much needed break!

The nursing students have worked very hard to learn and apply multiple nursing theories in class and in the lab in preparation for their clinical placements. Some of the academic expectations demonstrated through testing included a thorough understanding of the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards, the Registered Practical Nurse’s scope of practice, Nurse Ethics, professional boundaries in nursing, and the nursing process. Some of the challenging experiential learning assignments included a nurse-patient role play exercise where the students were videotaped and then graded on the effective use of essential interviewing skills, as well as group presentations, and self-reflection papers using APA formatting. The simulation lab was well used as students practiced clinical skills such as donning and doffing of personal protective equipment, safe patient repositioning, aseptic technique, and foley catheter insertion (to only name a few). These necessary learned skills will be used by the students to develop care plans in order to deliver patient centred care at their placement in long term care homes which began in January 2018!

Post Secondary (Fort Frances Campus)Semester 1

Seven Generations is very pleased with the successes of our students during the first semester of the 2017/2018 year and we look forward to celebrating their achievements in the second semester. Our Fort Frances campus currently has five college programs in session which include: Building Construction Technician, Welding Techniques, Hairstyling, Social Service Worker, and Early Childhood Educator.

Students spent much of the first semester devoted to developing foundational knowledge and skills related to their program. Our trade programs, which include Building Construction and Welding, began by learning about the proper use of the tools of trade, essential processes, as well as health and safety. Similarly, the up and coming hairstylists learned about basic haircuts, style techniques, and health codes while primarily working on mannequins. In other programs, such as the Early Childhood Educator and Social Service Worker, students honed the academic and critical thinking skills that will be required in their career.

In addition to regular classes, students had the opportunity to participate in workshops that provided essential value added resume building training. Workshops included Working from Heights, First Aid/CPR certifications, General Safety Awareness, and Mental Health First Aid. Aside from career specific training, these workshops provide valuable experiential learning and employer networking opportunities that help students develop an identity in their chosen field. Seven Generations firmly believes that a quality education must include learning outside of the traditional classroom and continually works with various partners to make these opportunities available to students.

The first semester of the 2017/2018 academic year has been a huge success and all of our students should be very proud of their accomplishments. The SGEI Post Secondary team is looking forward to the second semester and we are also hard at work preparing for the 2018/2019 school year. We have many programs that will suit a variety of vocational interests. For information on our programs for the fall, please visit our website at www.7generations.org. More information on programs can be obtained by calling our campuses in Fort Frances at 807-274-2796 or Kenora at 807-468-3096 and speaking to one of our recruiters. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply early as space is limited.

Did you know that the Anishinaabe language (sometimes referred to as the Ojibwe language) is very shaped by the territory around us? The descriptions of our natural environment are interwoven into each word to bring to life what we see, feel, and hear as we move through the seasons. The descriptions that occur in the winter season are beautiful and very visual. Here are just a few!

A Riddle about Anishinaabemowin

In Anishinaabemowin, the word “Inwe” means language, the voice/sound you were created or given to make, your voice, the sound that you make.

Aaniin Enwed Animosh? “Ruff-Ruff.”

Aaniin Enwed Gaazhagens? “Meow.”

Aaniin Enwed “Anishinaabe”? “Boozhoo.”

Daga Odaapinamawishin wa’aw asemaa. Daga anishinaabemotawishin.

“Please accept this tobacco from me. Please speak the Anishinaabe language to me.”

“Anishinaabemowin reflects our unique way of seeing and understanding the world. It embodies a philosophy that perpetuates life.”

Winona LadukeWaasa Inaabidaa, Ojibwemowin

“Our words are sounds. Our words are prayers. Everything that comes out of our mouths is a prayer because the Great Spirit listens to us all the time. So, we’re singing to our heartbeat when we talk.”

Embedded with Meaning: One word for “Elder” is Gichi Ayaa’aa. When operating in the language, we never have to say “Respect your Elders” as Gichi means Great and Ayaa’aa means “Being.” A Great Being. The respect is implied and built-in to how we are to understand them.

Look To The StarsCan you see

Mishi Bizhiw?Mishi Bizhiw is a very sacred spirit to the Anishinaabeg. He is known as the great underwater cat. He is said to dwell below the surfaces of lakes and rivers and frequents turbulent waters. He is known for his curved tail and is greatly respected.

Mishi Bizhiw is very easy to spot in the night skies during springtime. Keep an eye out for the constellations many know as Leo and Hydra, which can be seen below. The head and chest of Leo (which resembles a hook) is the tail and back legs of Mishi Bizhiw and the top half of the constellation of Hydra is his head, chest, and front leg.

Above: The Constellation of Leo Above: The Constellation of Hydra

As seen below, Mishi Bizhiw appears on sacred petroglyphs on Agawa Bay on Lake Superior.

Did you know that there are an estimated 100 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy alone – of which our sun (Giizis) is only one?

First Nation Student of the Month - October 2017

First Nation Student of the Month - November 2017

Congratulations to Annalise “C.C.” Hayes, our First Nations student of the month for October 2017!

C.C. is a 17-year-old grade twelve student. C.C. lives with her proud parents, Lisa George and Darwin Hayes, in town and she is a member of Couchiching First Nation. She has one older sister.

In high school, she has been on the Muskie girls’ hockey team for all four years and is currently the captain. She also played two years of Muskie soccer.

C.C. works part-time at Dairy Queen and has been doing so for a few years. When she is not working or busy with homework and hockey, she likes to catch up on sleep.

C.C. will graduate in June 2018. She plans on furthering her post-secondary education either in the USA or out west. She is interested in a career in the medical field.

Overall, C.C. is a kind and generous young lady with a very strong work ethic. She is responsible and dedicates herself wholeheartedly to all of her endeavors.

C.C. had this advice for other students: “Get help when you need it; don’t wait until the last minute. Join extracurricular activities because you make lots of memories and meet new people.”

With her positive attitude and her leadership skills, C.C. definitely has the potential to find much success in her future!

Well done to Rianna Roach, our First Nations Student of the month for November 2017!

Rianna is 16 years old and in grade eleven. She lives with her proud parents, Angela and John, on Couchiching First Nation. She has one younger sister and one younger brother.

Her current average is 84.25% and she made the Honour Roll at mid-term; she has also previously made the Honour Roll.

Rianna works part-time at Tim Horton’s. When she does have spare time, she plays hockey.

Rianna will graduate in June 2019 (she will also receive a Health & Wellness SHSM certificate). Her goal is to be a Nurse. To do this, she plans on applying to Sault College’s Bachelor of Science (Nursing) program (in collaboration with Laurentian University).

Overall, Rianna is a very conscientious young lady. She has a very strong work ethic and a very positive attitude towards school. With these characteristics, there is no doubt that she will be successful in her post-secondary education.

Rianna had good advice for those students who like to see success: “Time management. Do homework and use class time wisely.” She further explained that she’s found that if she uses her class time to do work, she has less homework which means more time to spend with family or to do what she wants to do!

Great advice Rianna –keep up the great work!

First Nation Student Success Program(FNSSP)

Windigo Island students, teachers, and parent chaperone’s had a field trip into Fort Frances. They enjoyed a day of painting with Jenny Coats, before attending a Fort Frances Lakers hockey game that evening at the IFK arena. After the game, the students enjoyed the pool at their hotel.

Teachers from Pegamigaabo, Onigaming, and Windigo Island schools participated in a PD session facilitated by the FNSSP teachers. The teachers worked in teams on Mouse Trap Race Cars followed by races where the winning team was awarded prizes.

David Bouchard visited the Grade1/2 class at Onigaming School on February 1st. He spoke to all of the classrooms (K-12). The students enjoyed hearing him play his variety of flutes, sharing his love of music and offering very inspiring messages throughout the day.

Onigaming School Pow-Wow was held February 8th. Many schools, including Pegamigaabo, Nestor Falls, Sturgeon Creek, and Baibombeh Anishinaabe School, were invited and participated in the grand entry. Students were given a few songs to dance to, before enjoying a delicious lunch of wild rice soup and bannock. The day ended with a giveaway and the traveling song.

Workshops & Training

It is a pleasure to report that the 2018 Training Programs have had a busy start in both Kenora and Fort Frances campuses. Kenora ran a Hospitality Program from January 29, 2018 to February 8, 2018, where students received training in Housekeeping, Front Desk Agent, and Food and Beverage Service.

All students received their Service Excellence Designation, completed the Smart Serve Course, and have taken the next step towards full time employment. Some students have already secured full time employment and the others are now entering the interviewing portion of the hiring process.

In Fort Frances, we are currently running a five week Line Cook program that will be completed on February 26, 2018. Each participant will receive their Service Excellence Designations, Smart Serve Certification, and their Safe Food Handling Certification. This program will be run again on March 5, 2018. We also ran a Hospitality Program in Fort Frances which ran from January 29, 2018 to February 9, 2018. Students completed this training and received their Service Excellence Designation and Smart Serve, and have made applications to work at local restaurants.

Kenora will also be running a Health & Safety Training Program from February 26, 2018 to March 9, 2018. This training will consist of Health & Safety Construction Basic Training, Working at Heights Certification, and WHMIS certifications, as well as training in Workplace Essential Skills.

We are also in the process of developing additional programs, including Microsoft Office/Excel/Power Point Basic Training Course.

If you wish to inquire about any of our training programs please contact Vivian Kakekapetum in Kenora by calling (807) 468-3096 or by emailing [email protected] and in Fort Frances contact Robbie Crowe by calling (807) 274-2796 or by emailing [email protected]

New Facility Progress

Seven Generations Education Institute was out recruiting potential students at the Superior International Junior Hockey League`s annual Showcase, which was held on January 30, 2018 and January 31, 2018 at the Ice For Kids Arena in Fort Frances.

The Showcase provided an opportunity for those in attendance to use some of the technology that we use in our classrooms and ask questions about upcoming programs.

The Welding Simulator and the Drilling Simulator were both on hand for potential students to try out.

SIJHL Hockey Showcase

The foundation for the new facility was completed in December.

The beams arrived in February and building of the new structure has commenced.

Check out our website for frequent updates on the progression.

High School (SGSS)

Calling all Seven Generations Secondary School (SGSS) students! We are now into the second semester of the 2017-2018 school year. Have you looked at how close you are to your grade 12 graduation? Have you thought about all of the different options offered at SGSS in order to help you achieve this great accomplishment? We offer The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Program. This will help you to receive your grade 9 and 10 equivalency credits in a very efficient manner if you are considered a mature student. PLAR also includes an opportunity to receive credits for certain life skills you may have obtained already through your work history, volunteering, cultural activities, and family responsibilities. These experiences can be reviewed and assessed and if they meet the criteria necessary for particular courses, some grade 11 and 12 credits can be issued. You can also receive cooperative education credits while you work! These credits are based on completing the Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) and working the necessary hours to earn 1 or 2 credits per placement. Co-op is a chance to get work experience in a field you may be interested in, but are not quite sure if it is right for you. If you are unsure about how many credits you have left or are concerned about how long it will take, please come see the teacher in your community! We can set you up on a path to achieving your grade 12 diploma that will maximize your previous educational and life experiences to reduce your workload in order to graduate.

Act now! We are also offering a new incentive to students FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY. We will be giving out $100.00 gift cards for every completed credit! Again, this is for only a short time. So let’s work together toward receiving your Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). You are closer to graduating high school than you think!

PLAR Program:Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Program

Post Secondary (Manidoo Baawaatig Campus)Semester 1

It has been another busy year in Kenora with new programs getting settled in and programs in their second year getting organized for their spring off-site experience courses.

Police Foundations students had a great semester as they move into scenarios and physical testing for their last semester before graduation.

Students in the Mental Health and Addictions Worker program completed semester three and are now moving into their final semester, which includes a practical placement within an organization in the community.

Students in the General Arts and Science Program have finished semester one and are heading to the finish line having learned the fundamentals of Mathematics, Communications, and the Sciences.

The Esthetician Program at Manidoo Baawaatig has been involved with several of our information sessions and has invited the High School students to check out what the program has to offer.

Indigenous Wellness and Addictions Prevention continues to have classes on weekends.

Culinary students are prepping for their Restaurant that will start later in Semester 2. Students have been participating in events preparation as well as helping out with lunches. Bookings for the restaurant started near the end of last semester and have filled up fast. The installation of a new Point of Sale system will allow students to learn and understand the importance of good restaurant management.

Upcoming events at Manidoo Baawaatig include several open houses and information sessions at the Event Centre. The Personal Support Worker Program and an Office Administration Certificate Program will begin over the next couple of months.

Starting February 20, Manidoo Baawaatig will begin its evening accredited course through Canadore College called “Computer Applications for Business”. In addition, we will start offering general education classes for anyone who is interested for a nominal fee.
