BE PART OF THE ART this Winter at VAC!As the colors of the seasonal landscape become more subtle and subdued, it is sometimes easier to notice the brightness and intensity of one’s own imagination. Winter can often bring one the time and space to pay attention to the brilliance of our interior world. As I move through our beautiful, bustling building I am so inspired by this community of creativity. From little ones with busy fingers exploring clay for the first time to experienced students using brush or blowtorch with competence and confidence, this place welcomes the process of art-making and art appreciating. It will include works of art by artists from the United States and Chili, original musical compositions by Pamela Illanes-Tatsuoak. We will partner with Chagrin Arts to present an intimate VIP concert in our gallery on March 22nd.

• Our third fabulous February fundraiser, #HotChocolate@Home, is an opportunity to buy tickets to support VAC, be entered in a raffle, participate in a contest, but never have to leave the comfort of your own home on a cold, snowy night! Look for details at http://www.valleyartcenter.org/upcoming-events.html.

Local public funding supports & enriches the work of the Valley Art Center

Ohio Arts Council (OAC) and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture (CAC) have granted over $300,000 over the past thirteen years to Valley Art Center; this has helped us provide over 400 classes to 1,400 students ages 3-93 annually, exhibit five gallery shows and stage Art by

the Falls outdoor art festival every June. This type of funding strengthens our community, and enriches the quality of life in our neighborhoods

for people of all ages. We’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit more about this extremely important funding source. The financial support received from OAC and CAC has helped Valley Art Center make a difference not only in the Village of Chagrin Falls, but also in the lives of the artists, students, art lovers and partner organizations in the five counties we serve. The stories are countless.

Cuyahoga County residents created Cuyahoga Arts & Culture in 2006 when they approved a tax on cigarettes to support arts and culture in our community. Since then, CAC has invested more than $140 million to deliver on the promise they made to support thousands of enriching arts and culture experiences in every corner of the county. Each year they support tens of thousands of arts and culture programs and events that enhance education, enrich quality of life and support the local economy.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically. OAC provides leadership and voice for the arts to transform people and communities. OAC was created in 1965 to foster and encourage the development of the arts and assist the preservation of Ohio’s cultural heritage. With funds from the Ohio Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, OAC provides financial assistance to artists and arts organizations through the various grant funding programs.

Valley art Center VisionValley Art Center energizes and encourages appreciation of art in people of all ages and backgrounds through education, inspiration, and opportunities for experience. We support art students and artists through quality curriculum and programming along with studio and exhibition space. We promote the growth of each individual’s potential and the advancement of the arts in the community.

Exhibition Dates: January 27-March 7, 2018

In 2018, Valley Art Center begins a three-year series of exhibits exploring con-cepts of identity through three different themes: People, Places and Things. Our first exhibit will focus on “PEOPLE.” 2D and 3D artists from the Chagrin Valley to around the world are invited to submit their work exploring the theme through representations of people. Artists are

encouraged to explore the concept of Identity as it pertains to people as individuals, or as a group. Artists may interpret the concept of identity in their own terms and may approach this call through any media and style.

Mother EarthPublic Opening Reception: Friday, March 23, 2018 from 6-8 p.m.

Exhibition Dates: March 24- May 2, 2018

The maestro behind Mother Earth is composer Pamela Illanes-Tatsuoka. Utilizing poems by Chilean writer, Antonio Skarmeta and Chilean poet-diplomat, Pablo Neruda, Pamela creates music for voice and instrument. World-class musicians performed the music and utilizing those melodic sounds as inspiration, American and Chilean visual artists interpret the poems to cre-ate memorable works of art. Mother Earth brings the power of multiple art forms to Chagrin Falls for guests to hear, to see and to be immersed in the Chilean culture. The exhibition will take place in Valley Art Center’s Margaret “Peg” Bowen Gallery. Join us on Thursday, March 22 from 6-8p.m. for the VIP Reception, which will include appetizers, beer and wine, and the opportunity to meet with the artists and composer. There will also be a one-time live performance of the musical pieces conducted by Sergio Castellanos, music instructor at Hawken Schools, and performed by his students. Due to space limitations, this will be a ticketed event (exclusive to Patron Level Donors and above). Tickets will be available through our website in 2018.

ARTREACH CommuniTy PARTnERsHiPsValley Art Center is involved in several partnership programs throughout our community, made possible through grants, and donations from people like you. We strive to bring the value and benefits of visual art to those that may not be able to come to us. We also offer scholarships to those in need on an individual basis. For more information on our scholarship program and how you can help support these and other “ARTREACH” programs, please contact our director, Mary Ann Breisch, at 440.247.7507.

Chagrin Falls Park Community CenterVAC sculpture instructor David Shankland has been a vibrant part of the Park Community Center After School Program as well as its summer programming. David has been teaching the elements of sculpture to elementary and middle school students, building fine motor skills as well as creativity and confidence. VAC also provides scholarships for students to take classes on campus, as well as participates in a summer employment program for high school students.

Hamlet VillageVAC is excited to announce the success of this partnership program. At Hamlet Village, longtime senior watercolor instructor Darlene Jackson delivers classes to residents on campus in addition to being invited to show student work in the Hamlet Atrium. At Arden Courts, master senior painter Victoria Wagner presents mixed media projects to memory-care residents who proudly display their work in the studio. Funded in part by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council, Valley Art Center is offering this unique outreach program for seniors who are challenged coming to our Bell Street Studio. Students enjoy camaraderie plus the many benefits that creativity has to offer to older adults, including critical thinking, fine motor skill develop.m.ent, and hand-eye coordination.

Chagrin SchoolsWe provide volunteer opportunities for students at events such as the Holiday Workshop and Art by the Falls, as well as office, gallery, and teacher assistant work. Last year, Chagrin business students helped plan and market the first annual Arts Hop with Valley Art Center and area businesses and organizations. VAC has partnered with Chagrin Schools to bring special needs classes to the VAC campus. By providing this opportunity, VAC has helped build creative self-expression, artistic skills, social interactions and self-esteem for students to whom these skills are critical. Chagrin Schools art instructor Kate Oulton has worked with the Chagrin Schools Art Club

to construct colorful works of art to display at the VAC children’s tent Art by the fall, highlighting the importance of our children’s programming. French students at Chagrin Falls Middle School partnered with Valley Art Center instructor David Shankland to manufacture and sell soap to raise funds for an art school he is opening in Haiti. The soaps were sold in the Valley Art Center Gift Shop over the 2016 holidays.

Local BusinessesOur exhibitions and events are supported by businesses and individuals who provide much needed financial and in-kind sponsorships. VAC works actively with galleries and art businesses in the Village to promote retail art sales in Chagrin Falls. An active member of the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce, in 2016, we helped found and promote the Chagrin Falls ArtsHop. VAC has recently organized art competitions and exhibitions with several local businesses fostering art beyond our walls.

Valley Art Center is proud to present the 35th Annual Art by the Falls outdoor fine arts and contemporary crafts festival. Every June, the highly attended outdoor show introduces the work of national artists and fine crafters to the suburbs of Cleveland. Founded over thirty years ago, the event draws over 10,000 patrons every summer to Riverside Park in historic Chagrin Falls. The show features approximately 120 painters, potters, jewelers, wood workers, fiber artists and other fine craftspeople. An ideal setting for an outdoor festival, the village’s popular Main Street overlooks two waterfalls and hosts a wealth of fine shops, galleries and restaurants.
