U.S. Postage PAID Tacoma, WA Permit No. 1006 5340 North Bristol Street Tacoma, WA 98407 253-752-6621 www.franketobeyjones.com Facebook.com/franketobeyjones The Mission of Franke Tobey Jones: To enrich and extend the quality of life for seniors in our community. As a not-for- profit organizaon, we provide senior residenal services, a supporve connuum of care, and innovave community outreach. Wicks continued out when extra equipment was needed, backing up his belief in how important it is to encour- age and enable physical fitness. In 2010, he established the Marjorie J. Wicks Charitable Subsidy Endowment Fund in order to help support our Health Care Center residents who have outlived their ability to cover the cost of care. Dr. Wicks was passionate about enabling residents to stay in their Health Care Center home. He wanted to extend this help into the future and encourage others to support our residents in this way. A few years aſter Marjorie passed he met the lovely Maxine Bascom, who also lost her spouse during residency at Franke Tobey Jones. They Wicks continued Connued together, to enjoy loving life at Franke Tobey Jones unl Maxine’s death in 2015. Dr. Wicks made an impact at Franke Tobey Jones in many ways, enabling very posive things to happen. He leſt a lovely legacy at Franke Tobey Jones that will help seniors in perpetuity. We are most thankful to Dr. Wicks for everything he has done in our community. Rest in Peace, dear friend. Franke-ly Speaking Winter 2018

Welcome to Franke

Tobey Jones

Philanthropy Matters

We deeply appreciate the generous individuals,

business partners and foundations who supported our

charitable mission in 2017. Together, we accomplished

a lot last year. Charitable Subsidy, the Employee

Scholarship Fund, Senior University, the Wellness

Program, the Point Defiance~Ruston Senior Center and

the Where the Need Is Greatest Fund were sustained

and continue to develop due to the investment of

donors. A Capital Campaign Committee was also created

and FTJ has undertaken its first ever capital campaign to

help build a new health center and memory care

building on campus. We are working hard to complete a

successful capital campaign over the next few years.

The Campaign for Franke Tobey Jones: Historic past;

Innovative future will set the tone for our mission-

driven work in 2018 and beyond. We hope you will join

us this year as we continue old traditions and create

new ones in order to enrich and extend the quality of

life for seniors in our community.

Dr. Merrill James (Jim) Wicks

Dr. Merrill James (Jim) Wicks and his wife

Marjorie moved to Franke Tobey Jones in 1997.

His happy spirit, community involvement and

philanthropic support were admired by many

people. Sadly, on December 20, 2017, Dr. Wicks

passed away. He will be greatly missed.

According to Dr. Wicks, life was an

experience of episodes. He received his

Doctor of Medicine degree and established a

practice of Anatomical and Clinical Pathology in

Tacoma, centered at Tacoma General Hospital. He was also the CEO of the

Blood Bank, and was President of the American Association of Blood Banks in

1962. Back in the 1950’s Franke Tobey Jones was a familiar landmark for Dr.

Wicks as he flew his seaplane on visits to medical facilities within the South

Sound.

Dr. Wicks was active in leadership of community organizations and at

Mason United Methodist Church. At Franke Tobey Jones he and

Marjorie funded the M.J. Wicks Family Wellness Center, built on campus in

2004, providing a site for an extensive program of exercise and fitness

classes, as well as lectures and educational and fellowship gatherings. Dr.

Wicks continued to be supportive of the Wellness Program as it grew, helping

Senior Center

It’s 2018 and a time for new

ideas and programs. We are

currently focused on education,

and are looking forward to a

discussion on the history of the

Smelter on Monday, March 12,

at 11:00 a.m. In addition, the

arsenic contamination and

cleanup will be discussed along

with environmental impacts. In

March we will begin HAM Radio

Classes. This is a 10-week

program, after which you will

be able to test for a Technician

License. We are also seeking

instructors for chess and

self-defense for seniors. Come

check out the fun at the Center!

The New Year offers a chance

for a fresh start and new begin-

nings. Why not take this

attitude toward your health and

fitness? Our Wellness Center

offers a variety of fitness

options to help you meet goals

including classes, state of the

art equipment and one-on-one

personal training, all included in

the price of membership. If you

are interested in taking that

first step to your new begin-

ning, please stop by or call us

at 253-756-6279.

donations of books, we also receive cash contributions, which allow the

Library Committee to make new purchases each quarter to keep all of

our many readers on campus happy. We appreciate the donors who

help to make our FTJ Libraries great!

Although people may

not first think of

retirement plan assets

as a means to make a

charitable gift, a

donation with

retirement funds may

be a great option for

some donors. United

States retirement assets of all types totaled $26.1 trillion as of March 31,

2017 and Individual Retirement Account (IRA) assets accounted for $8.2

trillion of the total (Investment Company Institute). Despite recent tax

reform, Charitable IRA Rollover law did not change. Donors age 70 ½ and

older with a qualified IRA can continue to enjoy tax benefits from their

gifts up to a total of $100,000 per year through an IRA Charitable

Rollover, and the rollover can qualify as part of your mandatory with-

drawal for the year. If you do not itemize, you can still enjoy tax benefits

because your rollover (all or a portion) to a non-profit like Franke Tobey

Jones does not count as income. For more information, contact Kelly

Merry, Director of Philanthropy, at 253-756-6297.
