We’re officially on the downward slope of the school year! Pardon the ski reference; I know this year hasn’t been ideal for winter sports

enthusiasts. Last year when I wrote this article, we were recovering from Snowzilla. Even though I love a good snow storm, I’m feeling thankful for the mild weather this season.

Spring sports are underway with scrimmages and games galore! Check out the GCM Master Calendar on the Marshall website. For students, Assess-ments are the name of the game for the foreseeable future. Besides IB and SOL test preparation, there are Choir, Band and Orchestra assessments — not to mention spring performances.

Please know, we take course regis-tration very seriously and ask that you have several conversations with your child about their interests, current and future goals, and thoughts about courses and electives that interest them. Also, do not forget to explore our wonderful Marshall Academy as well. Our Governor’s STEM Academy offers many different selections includ-ing information technology courses, auto technology, cybersecurity, cosme-tology and criminal justice. We are lucky to live in Fairfax County where students are prepared to be successful 21st century citizens through course offerings which go above and beyond a standard minimum.

On the sports front, I was happy to be able to attend the Winter Sports Banquet and celebrate our student athletes’ many successes over the past season. Now that spring try-outs have concluded, I look forward to watching our students compete in the

current season. I am sure we will be successful! This is the final time we will compete at the 5A level in region and state competitions. Next year, we will compete in the 5A North Conference playoffs, then move to 6A for region and state contests.

In other arenas, congrat-ulations to our DECA students who competed in Virginia Beach at the DECA state competition. Students earned four first place awards and ten students will be traveling to Anaheim, California for nationals. In addition to DECA success, a large group of FBLA students placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the regional level and many of them will move on to the state competition in April.

In performing arts, our theatre students are working very hard to prepare for our spring musical, Cry Baby. I can’t wait to see it! Also, our

Winter Color Guard has been doing extremely well competing all over the state of Virginia. I recently attended a competition at Mount Vernon High School in which our students placed first in their division. Our orchestra,

choir and band students are busily preparing for their annual assessments which will determine if our music department will once again be awarded the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award. We all wish our students and direc-tors good luck!

Finally, I have had the opportunity over the past many months to attend many concerts, sporting events and competitions. I am so very proud of each and every one of our students. Please continue to support your child, our school and our community.

Go Statesmen! m

Dear Marshall Families,

Iam so happy to be writing you this time of year! So many wonderful things are, and have been, happening at GCM! Where do I even begin?

First, school counselors are very busy registering students for the 2017-2018 school year. We continue to meet with individual students to help guide them in choosing the correct courses and the appropriate amount of rigor that will challenge them but not overwhelm. Later in the school year, Student Services will send home a draft of your student’s course choices for you to review.

On February 24, Marshall’s National Honor Society inducted over 100 new members from the Junior and Senior classes. The ceremony was led by NHS Vice President Neel

Simpson and Points Officer Mayita Muvavarirwa. Principal Litz provided opening remarks, followed by guest speaker Elizabeth Hurley, Environmental Sciences teacher at Marshall.

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. These characteristics are: scholarship, character, service, and leadership. Students who meet the GPA benchmark are invited to apply during the fall semester of their junior year.

The annual George C. Marshall’s Science Fair was a HUGE success! For the first time since I’ve been here,

we held our fair on a Friday and only included IB Bio 1 and IB Physics 1 students. We were able to get about 90 judges from the community who were excited to participate in the event.

Over 220 students presented 180 research projects to 90 volunteer, science judges. Of these, the partnered project of Alex Schmid and Rishabh Jain and the project of Margaret Norton were awarded overall Grand Prizes in the Physical Sciences and Life Sciences, respectively.

Alex and Rishabh used bacteria to create a Microbial Fuel cell, and then varied the concentration of salt in each cell to determine how that impacted the overall power production. Margaret examined how different colored lights affect plant growth. These students had amazingly creative projects, and when combined with their enthusiastic presen-tations, brought them to the top!

Additionally, 18 other projects were awarded 1st place prizes, and several other projects were awarded 2nd place and Honorable Mention prizes.

Our Grand Prize winners will join the 1st place winners to represent Marshall High School at the Regional International Science and Engineering Fair held at Robinson Secondary School, March 17–19. Viewing is open to the public on Sunday, March 19, 1-3 pm.

Congratulations to all students involved, and a special thanks to all the science teachers who spent countless hours working with students and organizing the event. A big thank you to all our volunteer judges, our administration for all their support, and our PTSA for the providing refreshments.

A list of all the winners and their projects can be seen below, but all IB1 Physics and IB1 Bio students should be congratulated for a job well done. Feel free to ask any of them to explain their projects to you!

Thanks for all your support. m

On January 27, a special banquet was held to honor the Girls’ Cross Country team that won the states title in November — the first

(which they won) and during half time, there was a ceremo-ny to honor the team and pass out States Championship rings to each team member, Coach General, Coach Ritchey and Coach Haugh. A banner commemorating the state title was also unveiled in the gymnasium. m

There has been a lot of exciting things happening with Marshall Band! Marshall Senior Jack Grimm played

with the state jazz band in November. Grimm is the first Marshall student ever selected for the All-Virginia Jazz Ensemble, and he debuted as the first chair trombone in the ensemble, no less.

In other band news, 21 GCM band students performed with the District Band the first weekend of February (more than Madison, Oakton, Chantilly, or Herndon High Schools), five of them as first chair in their sections.

Congratulations to these talented Marshall musicians:

Oboe: Shannon Prescott

Bassoon: Christina French, first chair

Clarinet: Cristina Catterton Maddie Choi Chaewon Kim

Bass Clarinet: Justin Choi

Alto Sax: Joe Kwartin, first chair Abby Shusterman

Tenor Sax: Jenny Gil Adiao

Baritone Sax: Justin Kaley, first chair

Trumpet: John Laszakovits Chris Margiotta

French Horn: Nathan Liu

Trombone: Jack Grimm, first chair Srikar Chittari

Bass Trombone: Diego Stine, first chair

Tuba: Miles Devlin Ellie Wilcox

String Bass: Alex Stenseth

Percussion: Patrick Hufnagel

Pre-Assessment ConcertThe band is rehearsing now for its Pre-Assessment

Concert, which can be considered a dress rehearsal for the State Assessment on March 17-18. If the symphonic band can get a Superior (equivalent to an A) rating from all judges at the State Assessment, our band will have earned the distinction of being a Virginia Honor Band for the fourth year in a row. The band already earned unanimous Superior ratings at the Marching Assessment in October, which is the first half of the two-part Honor Band selection process. All are welcome to attend the Pre-Assessment Concert at 7 pm on March 9, to support the band in its drive for excellence.

Support Marshall Band!Speaking of support, the band appreciates all who have

already contributed to its uniform fundraiser. If you saw any football games or marching competitions this Fall, you have seen the new uniform hats, paired with black t-shirts because we have literally outgrown our old uniforms. The full new uniforms will debut next Fall, and we’re still trying to pay for them. So, please watch for the band out in the community, playing music in front of local businesses, on May 6. Drop some money in an instrument case, and feel good about yourself for helping our poor children get a new (uniform) coat. Tax-deductible online donations through Paypal are also happily accepted at marshallband.org. m

Congratulations to Statesmen Theatre’s One Act Cast and Crew

The Statesmen Theatre’s One Act production, Emil and the Detectives, was truly unique, featuring 27 cast members,

a live pit band of seven musicians, an original score written by Marshall students Jack Grimm and Justin Kaley, a tech crew of seven, portable set pieces of life-sized trains that revolved center stage and one stuffed goat! It was a winning combination!

On January 21, Statesmen Theatre won second place and also of note, actors Patrick Brinza and Will Hemmingson

were named to the Conference 13 All Star Cast. Marshall was invited to compete again on February 4th at the Regional One Act Competition. Once again, Will Hemmingson was named to the Regional All Star Cast. Two other high schools won that day, but, by all accounts, the Marshall cast and crew delivered a stellar performance!

Little Women Wrap UpWith sold-out performances on three of the five nights, and

not a dry eye in the house, the Statesmen Theatre production of Little Women: The Musical was a total success. On opening night, the audience was treated to a cake in celebration of Little Women author Louisa May Alcott’s 185th birthday. The intimate atmo-sphere of a minimalist stage and a “Readers Theatre” style presenta-tion, delivered a warm, funny and stirring rendition of this timeless classic. m

Statesmen Theater News

Emil and the Detectives

Spring Musical Cry-Baby – March 30-April 2

The Marshall production of Cry-Baby is one of the first to be put on stage since the play

left Broadway and it promises not to disappoint. This jumping, jiving Tony-nominee is a rebellious teen comedy event! Based on the cult classic 1990 John Waters film, Cry-Baby takes place in 1950s Baltimore where the conservative squares face off against the leather-clad delinquents in this rocka-billy musical. The story centers on two star-crossed lovers — Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker and square rich girl, Allison. Cry-Baby is the coolest boy in Baltimore, a bad boy with a good cause — truth, justice, and the pursuit of rock and roll. Fueled by the rhythms of rock and roll, Allison turns her back on her squeaky clean boyfriend Baldwin to become a “drape” (a Baltimore juvenile delinquent) and Cry-Baby’s moll. Don’t miss it!
