Dear Friends,

It’s probably safe to say that even the most intrepid among us is ready for winter to be gone! The upside of the foul weather is that most of us have been sewing like crazy - thank goodness for fabric stashes. You knew you were collecting fabrics and projects for a good reason - Snow Days!

We still have a few spots left in Janet Nesbitt February classes. She’ll teach us all about her Crazy Piecing technique and how she hand appliqués all her wonderful designs. Her designs are so fun to stitch and, since you square up the blocks after they are sewn, each block is always the right size - yay!

Several new Block-of-the-Month programs are beginning soon and offer a variety of techniques, from hand piecing and hand appliqué to stitching everything in an embroidery module. Styles range from funky to old-fashioned, modern to vintage - truly something for everyone.

We’re excited to offer our “UFO PhD Program” (page 4) which is in-tended to motivate you to finish up Projects half Done. Not that any of us have any of those . . . There is a financial reward for completing the projects you’ve committed to finishing, but for most of us, the satis-faction of crossing off the item on our list is reward enough.

The 2017 Treasure Shop Hop is April 20-29 this year. We’ve added a shop (Dinah’s Fabrics & Totes in Cambridge), bringing the total num-ber of participating stores to Lucky Thirteen. We’re changing up sev-eral things so be sure to plan to hop around the valley. It’s really fun, regardless of which side of the counter you stand!

Mark your calendars now for Sue Spargo’s return to Boise. She’ll be here November 14-18, 2018. We won’t start taking signups until the next newsletter, but you’ll definitely want to save the date.

And lots more! See you soon and thanks for your continued support!

Our new Saturday/Sunday Sam-pler starts in January and is based on the “Sweet Tooth” quilt by Jaybird Quilts. The twelve-month program features pieced hexagon blocks, made either with templates or Jaybird Quilt rulers. The start-up fee is $35 and you’ll provide your own background fabric. We’re offering with it two fabric options: solid fabrics with a modern feel or printed fabrics with a late-1800’s flavor. The 66” x 88” quilt consists of 24 blocks (12 patterns, each done in two color combinations). Each month you’ll

receive one block; to make the second block, you can use your own fabrics, or purchase one from us for $5.00, or buy a finishing kit - this includes two colors of background fabric and the additional 12 blocks (they will be picked up one per month). The solid fabric kit is $79.99; the print fabric kit is $114.99.

In case you haven’t participated before, Saturday Samplers are all about the rules. And the fun. And the rules somehow add to the fun. After the first month, if you personally (no proxies) 1) show up on time with 2) your finished block and 3) watch our demonstration, the next month’s kit is free. If you don’t meet all three requirements, never fear, the kit for that month is only $5. You can come to either the Saturday or Sunday session, BUT YOU MUST PREREGISTER

Club members have so much fun and learn so much during Stitcher’s Garden, that we’re now on Year 7! On the fourth Saturday each month, we’ll discuss a variety of appliqué techniques, machine feet, and some of the lovely stitches that are on your sewing machine. The monthly demonstrations relate to blocks in the wonderful appliqué quilt called “Stitcher’s Garden”, de-signed by The Stitch Connection, but are also applicable to a wide variety of other projects you

will likely tackle in the future.

The monthly cost is $10, or $100 for a prepaid year, and includes the block pattern for that month. If you recently purchased a Bernina sewing machine from The Quilt Crossing, you can attend for FREE for one year. You can start at any time - we continue to rotate through the twelve blocks. Please remember to register each month - thank you in advance for your courtesy!

When we asked Nancy if she wanted to make the model of this darling quilt, she said “You had me when I saw the block of the lady”. The 12-month program starts in January and is ready the last day of each month. The first month’s kit is $54.99 and the other eleven months are $14.99 each. A setting kit with four borders and binding is $29.99. The quilt finishes at 51” x 66” and uses a variety of piecing and appliqué techniques.

Who could resist making this darling 48” x 50” quilt from Anni Downs of Hatched and Patched? The appliqués are from felted wool. The background blocks alternate be-tween a solid and polka dot linen/cotton blend fabric (the border, made from the polka dot fabric, is included in the last month’s kit). This twelve-month BOM starts in February and is available on the last Sat-urday of the month. The first month’s kit is

$72 and remaining eleven kits are $24 each. A floss kit is available for $10.99. SEW CUTE!

If you are a Jen Kingwell fan (and who isn’t?), you’ll love her new Template-of-the-Month. Be-cause Template-of-the-Month is abbreviated “TOM”, and Jen loves Tom Jones, she named the program “Delilah”, after Tom’s song. You’ll be humming the tune every time you work on your blocks! We are one of only 32 shops world-wide who can participate in this program, and we only have 24 spots available, so if you join us in this adventure, you must commit to participating for all twelve months (we’ll keep your credit card

number on file). Each month you’ll receive a set of acrylic templates and instructions to make that month’s blocks, which you can hand or machine piece. The finished quilt is approximately 66” x 69”. The cost for the Templates-Only option is $19.99 per month. If you would like the Tem-plate-Fabric option, you’ll also receive sixteen fat 1/16’s each month for a total of $34.99. Kit’s are ready the 15th of the month, starting in April. If you want to be just like Jen, and hand piece your quilt, Patty is offering a class on the technique—details are on page 10.

Although it is hard to believe or understand, there are a couple of sewers who have a few unfinished quilts. We are here to help! Our UFO (UnFinished Objects) PhD (Projects half Done) Program is de-signed to help motivate you to finish those quilts. We’re kicking it off on Super Bowl Weekend, Febru-ary 4 & 5. Pick up to twelve unfinished quilting pro-

jects (must eventually contain batting) and bring them in that weekend or later. We’ll document them with a photo and description. You’ll tell us in which of the next eleven months - February through December 2017 - you intend to finish them (the twelfth project is a bonus that can be done anytime during 2017). Bring back the finished quilt and you’ll be awarded points toward a Degree (a gift card given to you next Janu-ary). The point system per project is as follows: $1 if you finish it $1 if you finish it in the month it’s due $1 if the majority of supplies came from The Quilt Crossing $1 if you started it in a class at The Quilt Crossing $1 if you donated the finished quilt to charity Potentially, you can receive as much as $5 per quilt ($60 maximum) in your gift card. The biggest reward will be having as many as twelve FINISHED projects.

The first nation-wide Wooly Block Adventure was a great success. The theme was “Winter Wonderland” and our 8” wool block, designed by Cheryl Gunn of Waltzing With Bears, is called “Snow Day”. The time frame to receive a free pattern is over and, like its sister pro-gram, Row By Row Adventure, there is a hi-bernation period - this one ends February 15. Then you’ll be able to purchase the pattern or

kit for this darling block.

We just love the State Flower fabric from In The Beginning and realized it was the perfect fabric to make a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. You’ll fussy cut the State Flower fab-rics, using a red pindot for each center, a colored pindot fabric for the next round, and the State fabric for the

outside round (these three fabrics as well as precut hexagon papers are included in each kit). If you would like, you can purchase a cream pindot fabric for the garden path (minimum of 3-1/2 yards). Our fin-ished quilt, with the cream path, will measure about 56” x 76”. Because there are fifty states, hence fifty kits, you’ll get two blocks per month, so you can finish before any new states are admitted! We started this program October 15 but made extra kits so you can catch up. The kits are issued in alphabetical order and are $11.99 per month. This quilt is made using English Paper Piecing; if you don’t know how to do that technique, check out Myrna’s and Diana’s class on page 9.

LONGARM QUILTING STUDIO PASS

WOW! Have we got a deal for you! Our Longarm Quilting Studio Pass is just $150. That gets you ten hours of rental time, one valet pass, and a Certification Class (if you haven’t taken ours or want a little refresher-supply fee is not waived). That’s a value of up to $300, all for $150! The value of having your quilt finished - PRICELESS!

Another amazing quilt by Nancy Rink! Unlike the two of her previous programs that we’ve offered (Amish with a Twist 2 & 3), this 96” x 102” quilt is made from print fabrics instead of solids. There are three center star block options - you’ll get enough fabric and the pat-terns to make the one you want. The background is medium gray back-ground. You’ll receive enough fabric and the patterns to make the appliqué blocks with your favorite method or you

can go the easier route and purchase laser-cut blocks for $54.99 (for all four appliqué blocks). The 12-month Block of the Month starts on March 4 and is available the first Saturday of the month. The kit for the first month is $99; for months two-twelve, each kit is $19.99..

Based on your response, we know you love this Block of the Month program! It uses the English Paper Piecing technique (we’re happy to show you how easy it is - just ask at the counter) for a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. Each month, for $4.99, you’ll pick up a packet of 19 pre-cut 3/4” finished hexagon papers and fabrics - enough to make a flower.

We’re using exclusively Jo Morton fabrics. Every few months, we’ll also offer a packet of black fabric hexagons to use as the “path” for your garden. Blocks are ready the fourth Saturday of each month. No need to sign up for this one, but take care - when we sell out of a block, it’s gone. You can start at any time (we’re already on Block 49 and it shows no sign of stopping!).

This cityscape by Kimberly Rado is such a breath of fresh air! The 54” x 66” quilt is template-pieced so you’ll get a chance to brush up on your skills. We started this 12-month program last March and are not re-kitting. If you would like to make one with your own fabric choices, the pattern book is available for $44.99.

We’re on Collection 6 of Kim Diehl’s Simple Whatnots Club series. There’s a kit a month for these adorable, quick-to-sew projects of Kim’s design, featuring her “Katie’s Cupboard” fabric line. In-cluded in the project pattern are extra little snippets and morsels from Kim, such as recipes, sewing tips & tricks, crafty things, and ideas for decorating with quilts. The kit for each month de-buts on the 2nd Saturday and includes

the pattern and fabric for the quilt top and binding. When possible, we continue to kit Collections 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 (as fabrics run out, we are substi-tuting other “Kim” fabrics). Simply wonderful!

What a breath of fresh air! Patty has redrafted this former Block of the Month pattern to elimi-nate triangles so it’s ever so easy to create your own bed of flowers! The quilt is made from the Deco State Flower collection by In The Begin-ning Fabrics and each of the fifty blocks repre-sents a different State Flower. The complete kit is $199.99 and includes both sets of instruc-tions.

This glorious quilt, Amish With a Twist II, based on quintessential Amish blocks and color pal-ette, appeals to everyone. The 105” square quilt is made from Marcus Brothers Centennial Solids and is designed by Nancy Rink. We first offered it as a Block of the Month, but now are selling complete kits for $209.99.

Amish with a Twist III is also designed by Nancy Rink and uses Marcus Brothers solid fabrics to make these blocks based on traditional Amish quilts for a vi-brant look that is true to Amish tradi-tion but is also very contemporary in feel. The complete kit is $229.99. Instructions are given for both the pieced option and the appliqué op-tion. The four appliqué blocks are also available pre-fused and laser-cut for an additional $11.99 each.

This row quilt is a great way to get your feet wet in the Modern Quilt Movement. We’ve used the Andover’s Dimples fabric line - they read as solids but give just a little bit more texture and movement to the quilt. The pieces are relatively large so the quilt, which measures 91” x 96”, goes to-gether pretty quickly. Complete kits, which include the pattern, fabric for the front and binding, are just $209.99.

We are in love with this darling quilt by Cherry Blossom Quilting. Joyce used Moda Grunge fabrics for the blocks that she hand appliquéd - the designer used fusible web, so pick the method you love the most. We first offered it as a Block of the Month, but now are selling complete kits for $199.99. If you’d prefer to pick your own fabrics, the pattern is $44.99.

Beginner - someone who isn’t sure which end of the needle to thread. Beginner Plus - has done more than glance at a rotary cutting set and knows how to operate a sewing machine. Has probably taken a beginner class. Looking for a challenge.

Make it from a jelly roll of wonderfully coordinated fabric or from your own assortment of thirty-two 2-1/2” strips (if using

We are so happy to have our Longarm Quilting Studio open for your quilting enjoyment! Four APQS Millennium systems are ready to help you finish those quilts! All are equipped with the Bliss track system for extra smooth and easy machine movement. Because

they are constructed from aircraft aluminum, they are about half the weight of other longarm machines - combine that with the Bliss track and they move like butter! Multi-positional handles allow you to adjust them so they are at the right angle for you. Speaking of making them just right for you, all four have a hydraulic table lift so the table can be raised or lowered to the perfect height in seconds. The automatic quilt advance with foot pedal control is so easy, you kind of look forward to it! Our goal is to make this a fun, happy experience for you, so please don’t hesitate to ask for help or let us know how to make it better.

Already taken a certification class somewhere else? Feeling a little rusty? We can show you how to use the controls and help you brush up during your regular rental time (but heck, if you buy a *Studio Pass, the class is free and it’s always fun, so why not take it anyway!).

Quilting is My Therapy By Angela Walters

Wow! The front and back covers of this book make you say WOW before you even open it! This clever and inspirational book is really two books in one. One is the story of Angela’s journey from fast food restaurant employee to professional machine quilter. The other is the visual and stunning photographic feast that demonstrates Angela’s amazing quilting skills. Angela’s honest style in telling her tale is

refreshing. She was introduced to quilting through her husband’s grandpa, who nourished and encouraged her along her quilting journey. He suggested she buy her first long arm machine without ever machine quilting before. Was it easy? Did she care? Not really. Grandpa would get quilt tops and Angela would practice quilting them. Eventually she set a goal to get her first customer and after receiving a $35 payment for her quilting, she set another goal and kept quilting. Angela says that if luck is just preparation meeting opportunity, then she sure was lucky. I couldn’t even begin to pick a favorite quilt or quilting design from the fabulous quilts in this book because they are all my favorite. The quilt photography and the detail shots of the free motion machine quilting are incredible. Are all the stitches perfect? Does Angela care? Not really. She just keeps quilting. The best way to sum up the wonderful book, Quilting Is My Therapy by Angela Walters, is with her own quote, “I’m not sharing my story to tell you how great I am, I’m trying to show you how great you can be. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Preserving History By Julie Hendricksen

Have you ever looked at an antique quilt that just spoke to you? That’s what I found as I stared at the Sugarloaf quilt, based on the traditional Thousand Pyramids pattern, in Julie’s new book. Julie is both a prolific antique quilt collec-tor and excellent teacher in how to authenti-cally reproduce an antique quilt with modern quilting tools. The selection of antique quilts chosen for this book combines old standards like Sawtooth Star, Flying Geese and Snowball with wonderfully unique soon-to-be favorites. Each pattern starts with an antique inspiration quilt. Julie deftly brings to life the history behind the colors and patterns and empha-sizes the original hand quilting design. Then she explains the new reproduction in great detail with excellent photos and instruction and assures us that many of the hand quilting patterns used in antique quilts can easily be reproduced by home or long arm machines. The two Snowball quilt patterns are tailor made for stash busting. The reproduction pattern looks like circles but the construction is all straight line piecing. The quilting is simple inch-wide cross- hatched lines. Voila, a quilt is finished! The next time you are wishing for a brighter light or a better sewing needle, take a moment to appreciate the works of art created by our fore-quilters. I’m so thankful that quilt historians like Julie Hendricksen continue to bring antique quilts to life. Preserving History is a great book that I highly recommend.

Easy Cat Beds: Looking for an easy way to give to your com-

munity? Make some cute beds for the cat kennels at the Idaho Humane Society. All you have to do is sew two fat quarters of colorful* fabric together on three sides, using a 1/2” seam allowance (you can also use a half yard). Turn right side out and use it to line a small trash can in

your sewing room. When you have pet-safe scraps, like fabric or bat-ting, drop them in the bag. When it’s full, turn under the last seam and stitch it up. Of course, you can always just insert a pillow form instead. Drop it off at The Quilt Crossing, and we’ll see it gets to the shelter. *Cats don’t see color well but potential adopters do, so let’s make them as appealing as possible!

Pet Food Pantry: Don’t forget, we are a drop-off site for the

Pet Food Pantry, an on-going program developed by the Idaho Humane Society, the Idaho Food Bank, and Meals On Wheels. Why not pick up a little extra to donate when you are getting food for your own dog or cat?

Don’t forget Boise Basin Quilters Quilt Guild. We meet on the third Thursday of each month (except July & December) at the Church of Christ, 2000 El Dorado

Street. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the meeting begins at 7 pm. See you there!
