From Rocky to the Real World “I found out about Rocky Mountain College through friends who were attending,” says Colin Seefried, an RMC graduate. “I was studying at Mount Royal University and I was already involved in Young Life, and I wanted to pursue youth leadership. I transferred from Psychology at MRU to Rocky to study Leadership.” Colin completed a Bachelor of Arts in Leadership Development with a major in Youth Leadership and is now working as a Family Support Counsellor at Woods Homes in Calgary. “We work with young people and families who have dual diagnosed mental health issues,” says Colin. “Often one of those issues stems from conflict with the parents. We work with Alberta Health and we have kids who spend a month with us transitioning back home from time in the hospital.” WINTER 2015 ...ON THIS ROCK WE BUILD. Rethinking Bible College What began as a discussion at Rocky Mountain College back in 2010 has now become a reality. Our college has transitioned to a “distributed learning model” we have named Pathways. Kerry Belt, President of RMC, says “We started the process with a question, ‘What if we could take education to people where they are at, instead of expecting them to come to us?’ RMC has always had discipleship and leadership as part of its genetics. Pathways is another step in pursuing that passion. We believe leaders are best developed as they practice leadership. Pathways takes that idea to a new level.” Now, there are more students in the Pathways program than on campus, and with this official launch, RMC is expecting to see a surge of interest from prospective new students. “We are having very exciting conversations,” says Enrollment Director, Robert Harris. He has just returned from representing RMC at BC’s Missionfest and the BC Camping Association Conference where he had the opportunity to talk to people from a range of mission agencies, church denominations, camps and other Christian schools, about the unique Pathways model. “I spoke to one mission agency representative who said that his organization has attracted passionate people to serve overseas, but they need biblical and theological training to provide a foundation for their ministry work,” says Robert. “Pathways can provide that to them where they are now.” “I even spoke to people from other schools who said they can’t offer all their courses every year, which creates some challenges for students wanting to complete a program,” adds Robert. “I told them Pathways can help with that too so that students can complete their degrees in a shorter timeframe.” “Previously people came to us, got their training, and then went out into ministry,” says Robert. “Now, we say ‘Serve in your ministry and we can come alongside and train you where you are.’” “We are being relevant, practical and accessible,” Robert adds, “and I am excited about what will happen as we launch Pathways officially with our new communication tools.”

WINTER 2015

...ON THIS ROCK WE BUILD.

Rethinking Bible CollegeWhat began as a discussion at Rocky Mountain College back in 2010 has now become a reality. Pathways takes that idea to a new level.”

Now, there are more students in the Pathways program than on campus, and with this official launch, RMC is expecting to see a surge of interest from prospective new students.

“I spoke to one mission agency representative who said that his organization has attracted passionate

people to serve overseas, but they need biblical and theological training to provide a foundation for their ministry work,” says Robert. “Pathways can provide that to them where they are now.”

“I even spoke to people from other schools who said they can’t offer all their courses every year, which creates some challenges for students wanting to complete a program,” adds Robert. “I told them Pathways can help with that too so that students can complete their degrees in a shorter timeframe.”

“Previously people came to us, got their training, and then went out into ministry,” says Robert. “Now, we say ‘Serve in your ministry and we can come alongside and train you where you are.’”

“We are being relevant, practical and accessible,” Robert adds, “and I am excited about what will happen as we launch Pathways officially with our new communication tools.”

“I learned a lot of practical material at Rocky which I am using now,” Colin adds. “Learning how to run small groups has been a very valuable skill set as I run a lot of groups with the youth and sometimes with parents.”

“I very much enjoyed the program itself,” comments Colin. “Highlights for me were the relationships, especially those with the professors, the conversations in class, and the fact that the classes were small,” Colin adds.

As the Intake Coordinator at Woods Homes, Colin works with families when they are ready to leave the program. He continues to put into practice the valuable training he received at Rocky Mountain College.

PartnershipsRMC remains focused on discipleship and leadership training in our transition to Pathways. Partnerships are helping us to pursue both. We have been meeting with other organizations that also focus on discipleship and leadership. As we find opportunities to achieve common goals, we are forming partnerships with these groups. Denominations are using the Pathways curriculum to help their pastors and lay people improve their spiritual life and ministry.

Several camps are now looking at Pathways to provide Biblical learning to their staff and interns.

Individual churches and other ministry organizations are also partnering with us as they use our curriculum for their staff, interns and lay people.
