On Sunday 15th November 15 Mr Pete Kelly, organiser of the Killamarsh Arrows Basketball team, was presented with his British Empire Medal (BEM) after being named on the Queens birthday honours list for his services to physical education. The Arrows, whose first team currently play in the second division of the English Basketball League ,were formed in 1991 and have been headed up by Mr Kelly for over two decades. Many of the kids who train today have parents who used to attend also. The BEM was established in 1922 to replace the Medal of the Order of the British Empire. It is awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. The award was put into abeyance in 1992 and brought out again in June 2012, for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Mr Kelly devoted the award to his family and the volunteers who help run the fantastic club. Picture above shows the Clerk and Chairman with Mr Kelly and his wife at the presentation day.

Killamarsh Sports Centre

Councillors Comments - Cllr Sheila Crossley

Is it true? One of the rumours I often heard before joining Killamarsh Parish Council was that people resented the Sports Centre because it put up the Council Tax and they themselves never made any use of it at all. People in surrounding villages were getting the benefit at our expense. Almost the first thing I discovered was that the Sports Centre shows an excess of profit over expenditure. In other words, it costs less to run than it takes from the people paying to use it. So people in surrounding villages are actually contributing towards the money the Council has available to spend for the benefit of Killamarsh people!

Your Village Needs YOU! At the Full Parish Council meeting on the evening of 26th October, the Council took the decision to put it to the Parishioners to decide the name of Centre. There were many different views of what the perception of the Centre is. Our current title is Killamarsh Sports Centre. However, we are more than just a place for people to come and get sweaty. There are also many community groups and events which take place here. Therefore, we’re asking for your suggestions as to what to call ourselves. Please fill in the below feedback form and return it to the Centre for the attention of the Parish Clerk.

Ambiguity - By ‘Owd Tup

Why don’t all the signs I see, say exactly what they mean? Our Post Office bears the sign, which reads “Free Cash Machine”

But when I dared to try it out, I found, to my dismay, “Free Cash” just doesn’t mean that they give cash away

The other day my heel came off when I was running late

So I was pleased to see a sign which read “Heels Fixed while U wait” “Ready Tuesday” the fellow said—I asked if his sign was wrong.

He said, it’s “while you wait”, alright—it just doesn’t say, how long”

When I popped into the Doctors with a bad cold in the head. The girl behind the counter smiled at me “Take a seat” she said.

I picked one up, made for the door, the doctor gave a frown. “When she says take a seat” he snarled “She simply means, sit down!”

“Stop Children Crossing” reads the sign - I feel an awful fool If I stop children crossing here, they’ll never get to school!

Food for Thought

Mid Winter has arrived and with the dark mornings and long evenings what's to do in the garden or down at the allotment I ask? The answers is pretty easy. Lets just sit back and pat ourselves on the back after a good year in Killamarsh! There is a saying that "self praise is no praise" but that surely can't be right.

Reflecting back to 2015 we grew and picked;

Tomatoes (12 varieties)

Runner beans

Shallots and onions

Strawberries, blackcurrants, tayberries and raspberries

Potatoes galore

Apples from our 8 trees - Katy was the best

And not forgetting the garlic

2016 has ambitions for us all, gardener's or not, getting out in the garden is great. Either a simple grow-bag for the kids or granny to plant out strawberries, lettuce or whatever gets their interest is a fine thing and something

to really look forward to.

Grow it, cook it, eat it.... Go on give it a go.

John Fitzpatrick - Station Road allotment holder
