The Bow and Arrow (Continued from pg 1)

A little boy went out to school one day

And carried his arrows and bow;

For guns, they are dangerous things for play;

In the hands of little children you know.

A little bird sat in a cherry tree,

And whistled and said “you can’t shoot me.

Cuckoo

Cuckoo Cuckoo Cuckoo Cuckoo

“Just wait” says the boy “And I’ll get close

enough,

And see if I don’t shoot you through.”

“Do you think” says the bird “I am not up to

snuff,

To sit and be shot at by you?”

“I thank you, you’re rather too kind Sir—”

“The arrow is not in my mind sir: Cuckoo

Cuckoo Cuckoo Cuckoo Cuckoo

The little boy raised his arrow to his eye:

And aimed it right straight for a while:

The little bird laughed and away he did fly

Saying “a miss is as good as a mile.”

The little boy threw down his arrow and cried:

The little bird laughed till it almost died.

Cuckoo Cuckoo

Moral

Now listen kind sir when e’er you sit down

To court a fair maiden so shy

Pray don’t let her know what you are about:

Or else she will certainly fly:

But set your shares with a lover’s art:

And then you may laugh when you’ve caught

her heart

Dedication of Pews and

Community Donation

At the recent Christmas Gala in the

1815 Parish House, three more pews

in the sanctuary were dedicated. They

were for Philander Rainey, first President of the Histori-

cal Society; Thomas Christofes, a past President of the

Society; and for the Emma Rider Huss and Joseph Huss

Family. For each pew, family and friends donated $1000

or greater to the Society. Plaques will soon appear on

these pews as well as four other pews that were previ-

ously dedicated.

The Society’s 2013 Christmas Community Service pro-

ject was to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald

House. The Society’s donation will exceed $350. A por-

tion of these funds was donated by Society members as a

second way to honor Mr. Rainey, Mr. Christofes and the

Huss Family.

President’s Message Greetings Members,

As we approach 2014, the Hummelstown Area

Historical Society will be in existence for forty-

three years and our flag ship building, the Parish

House, will be celebrating its 199th year serving

the community.

During the past two years it has has been a pleas-

ure to serve the Lower Dauphin Community as

president of the Hummelstown Area Historical So-

ciety and I look forward to continuing this position

in 2014. During the past three years the Society

has made significant gains and advancements.

In a time when many service organizations strug-

gle to obtain members, we continue to grow and

gain community support. We live in a world that is

busier than ever and families and individuals are

inundated with information and activities and

choices. As a Society we have continued to intro-

duce innovation and new methods to attract mem-

bers and friends to our programs.

I look forward to working with a Board that is

composed of people who have served the Society

since the 1970s and 1980s, and I look forward to

our three newest Board members to bring in fresh

views and innovation. I also am greatly apprecia-

tive of all the volunteers that make the Society

possible. Our Society continues to see support

from all facets of our Community.

I wish you and your family a happy holiday.
