Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Iowa Bicycle Coalition in 2012. We have nearly 1,500 members that contribute $52,000 to the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. Interestingly, 100 members are responsible for contributing $23,000 in the last two months of the year. With grants and other sources, we bring in $5 for every $1 in contributions.

Unfortunately, it is still not enough for the work that we want to do. We need more efforts for traffic safety education, we need to work on transportation policy in the legislature and state government, and we need to foster more tourism and event participation.

We would love to do more bike rodeos, helmet giveaways, safety classes, and health fairs, but we need more resources.

I know I am preaching to the choir because if you are reading this, you have already contributed to the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. You can help bicycling by urging the people you ride with to join the Iowa Bicycle Coalition.

I would like to welcome John Phipps as the Safe Routes to School Director for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. John is a retired Cedar Rapids police officer and has wonderful experience with kids. If you want to start a safe routes to school program, contact [email protected].

Also, Chelsie Gingery has been working hard on the Iowa Bike Expo over the last several months. Chelsie rode her bike to our office looking for some experience in bike advocacy. We have put her in charge of the Expo and she has been landing vendors left and right.

It won’t be long and the National Bike Summit will be on our schedule during the first week of March. This is the opportunity for bicyclists to travel to Washington DC and meet with our congressional delegation. If you are interested in going, please contact [email protected] for more information.

We have been sharing our model bike ordinance with communities across Iowa. It doesn’t make huge changes, but it removes mandatory sidepath laws. It also addresses braking to allow for fixed drive bikes while removing the skid requirement. Our members have been instrumental in taking this to their city council for adoption. North Liberty is the next community considering an ordinance change after our members brought the illegal sidepath law to the city’s attention.

The 2013 Iowa Bicycle Summit will roll into Des Moines on January 25 and 26 at the Iowa Events Center. The Iowa Bicycle Summit is the education conference that trains engineers, community officials, and advocates on how to build better bicycle facilities. This year the Iowa Bicycle Summit will focus on the new AASHTO Bike Guide. Training will be provided by Tom Huber from Toole Design and Arthur Ross from the City of Madison, Wisconsin.

In addition, there will concurrent sessions on trails and trail design. Finally, the Iowa Bicycle Summit will have a new session on funding. The session will be similar to speed dating, where participants will have the opportunity to meet in small groups with funding coordinators.

The Iowa Bicycle Summit is the must-attend workshop if your community is building, designing, or planning a trail or bike lane or more bicycle facilities
