Basketball squads try to push programs in right direction and start own legacies

After a 11-15 record from a year ago, the Cleveland Clippers boys basketball team is relying on some new faces to rejuvenate the program. Under the leader-ship of coach Dan Frederickson, the Clippers look to move north of the .500 mark.

Key returning players include senior captains Matt Archer, Spencer Lynch and Grant Germ-scheid, as well as Junior captain Spencer Davies.

Frederickson has high expec-tations for all three of these play-ers. On Archer, “ Matt is a tough

competitor. He is a very good defender as well as one of our re-liable shooters. He is a player we need to help anchor our defense on a nightly basis.”

On Germscheid: “This is Grant's 1st season in our pro-gram. He has proven to be an ex-cellent leader. He was the Quar-terback on the football team, and he has very good court vision. Grant is an excellent athlete that will help us improve immensely on the defensive end this season.”

On Lynch: “Spencer has a chance to leave Cleveland as one of it's most dominant players in recent memory. He has a skill set that just keeps improving every-

player that understands what we expect defensively. He is a very good defender,” Frederickson said. “His offense keeps improv-ing every practice. He will play valuable minutes for us this sea-son. Things are really clicking for him right now. I'm proud of his work ethic.”

Frederickson knows the key to Cleveland’s potential success will be defense.

“For us it needs to start and end with Defense. We got caught up to much in our scoring last season in my opinion. We need to create an identity here at Cleveland,” Frederickson said.

“We gave up the most points per game 67.4 ppg in our confer-ence last season. That was also 3rd worst in our sub-section. We were 6th in scoring in our confer-ence 63.4 ppg, and we were 9th in scoring offense in our 19-team section. I am a defensive minded coach, and those point per game totals we gave up last season are 100% inexcusable.”

With all this being said, coach Frederickson believes his squad is ready for the next step in 2013-2014.

“I want us to take the step of

day. I am so impressed by how his game has advanced in the last year. Defensively he is already a very special player. His of-fensive game in the low post is improving rapidly, and he will be a formidable task for opposing defenses this season.”

On Davies: “This is Spencer's first year in our program. Spen-cer is an explosive athlete. His quickness and reaction time is amazing. Those who have seen him play football know exactly what an athlete he is. He will be a very disruptive force defen-sively for us. Offensively he is a very good shooter. And a very capable ball handler. I am very excited Spencer is a part of our program. He is a game changer for us.”

Other key players include Carter Kopet and Travis Meyer.

Frederickson is excited for Kopet, an eighth grader’s bright and abundant future for the Clip-pers.

“Carter will essentially get the keys to our car. He will be our starting point guard this season. He has an amazing feel for the game of basketball,” Frederickson said. He is a very good shooter and an exceptional passer and decision maker. He seems to have an unshakeable confidence on the floor. A con-fidence that cannot be taught. He is a true team player. He plays with a burning desire to win. “

On Meyer, a Junior: “Travis' game has grown immensely over the course of the summer. He has a very good motor. He is a

Mankato Loyola High School boasts several competitive win-ter sport programs including the boys basketball program, which is a part of a large and competi-tive Valley conference. Crusad-ers boys basketball is coached by Tim Anderson and led by several upperclassmen on the court, in-cluding senior guards Carson

Seifert, Lance Gaspar, Ryan Van Blarcom, and Mark Kortuem, and senior forwards Reilly Knut-son and Ben Torgerson.

With all but one player on the roster being a junior or senior, the Crusaders are full of veteran tal-ent. The team looks to be com-petitive in a tough conference and has already started their sea-son on the right foot. The Cru-saders claimed their first victory in their first game of the year on

Nov. 25 against New Ulm Cathe-dral by a score of 62-53. Their next matchup comes against the NRHEG Panthers tomorrow.

Mankato Loyola teams up with Mankato East to form the Mankato East/Loyola boys swimming and diving team, which begins its 40th season this year. The team is led by senior co-captains Nate Dreyer, who qualified for state last year in the 100-yard breaststroke, Mitch Miller (sprinter) and diver Tyler Willert.

Other seniors that look to add depth to the team are Ryan Kot-thoff (sprinter an breststroker) and Tristan Schmidt (butterflier). Juniors that will also compete on the varsity team include Jack Lin, Sam Nelson, Derek Plag-man, Isaiah Warning and Micah Warning. Sophomores on the team include Luke Bauer, Noah Calfisch, Andrew Schultze and Jacob Wilde.

The Mankato East/Loyola swim and dive team, nicknamed the Cougars, open their season on Saturday at the Hutchinson Invite, with the swimming held at 1 p.m. and the diving portion of the meet held in the morn-ing. The Cougars’ first home meet will be on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. against Rochester Mayo.

This is an especially impor-tant year for the team as Head Coach Tim Johnson is retiring at the end of the season after 40 years of coaching. He is assisted by Dave Burgess, Raymie Benja-min, and Adam Baker.

The girls basketball team at Mankato Loyola is gearing up for the season ahead with several seniors ready to lead their squad onto the court. These seniors in-clude guards Jordyn Theuninck, Jordyn Strachan, Aunikah Bas-tian and Kelly Headington and forwards Lindsay Solheid, Grace Hermer and Annie Nawrocki.

The seniors are followed up by three juniors in guard Me-gan Schroeder, forward Em-

ily Gaspar and center Alexxys Clow. The Crusaders also have three freshmen on the team, which include guards Lindsey Theuninck, Elizabeth Ninneman and RaeAnn Dose. The team is coached by Rick Theuninck.

Another sport program from Loyola that partners with Mankato East is the girls hockey team, coached by Nathan Fuller.

NEW ULM CATHEDRAL

Photo Courtesy of New Ulm Cathedral High ShoolJunior guard Jacob Gengelhoff (above) will be one of the key players head coach Alan Woitas plans to build the team around.

New Ulm Cathedral is the home of the Greyhounds. The Greyhounds head into the winter sports season after the football team finished with a record of

7-3 on the gridiron, while other fall sports at Cathedral partici-pate in a co-op with New Ulm Public.

The girls basketball team comes off a 14-10 season last year that included a 9-7 confer-ence record. Minnesota Valley

Lutheran and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s will be the Greyhound’s biggest rivals this season, and they look to be very competitive.

“We expect to compete ev-ery night with a solid group of players returning, including four seniors and some junior with varsity experience,” head coach Jeremy Drexler said. “We expect to be in every game and if we can make some plays on any given night we can play with anybody.”

Sleepy Eye Public, the de-fending conference champion, looks to be a favorite once again along with Wabasso following closely behind.

“Teams like Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, Cedar Mountain and Springfield are extremely competitive year in and year out” said Drexler. “There will be no easy nights in the league, and we’ll need to show up every day.”

Some key players return-ing to the squad this season in-clude senior point guard Kelli Eckstein, senior wings Kristin Mohr and Karlee Pfaff and se-nior post Lyndsay Simon. Junior post Anne Schwartz will also be looked at to contribute to the of-fense.

The boys basketball team had a little harder time last season as they finished 5-15. However, the Greyhounds return a solid core of players who received varsity playing time last season. Junior guard Jacob Gangelhoff will be relied on heavily this season.

“Gangelhoff will need to be-come the floor leader for this team,” head coach Alan Woitas

said. “He’s a good defender who will be looked at to contribute of-fensively as well.”

Other returning starters are junior posts Brandon Beranek and Colin Helget, who will also be looked at to contribute on both ends of the court and pro-vide leadership to the team.

As far as the conference goes, Woitas feels that anyone could win it.

“The conference, in my opin-ion, is up for grabs this year,” Woitas said. “There are going to be a lot of balanced teams this year, and I don’t know who I would pick for a preseason favor-ite. I would like to see us com-pete each night with the teams in our conference and improve on our conference standings from a year ago.”

Aside from the basketball teams at Cathedral, the Grey-hounds have many athletes that participate in an athletic co-op with New Ulm Public.

Junior Peter Klimek and sophomore Nathan Berg are a part of the wrestling team at New Ulm, and sophomore Molly Klimek and eighth grader Kate Klimek are part of the gymnas-tics team. Senior Morgan Schae-fer along with sophomores Bai-ley Landerville, Ellie Dittrich, and Sam Guggisber participate in girl’s hockey. The lone boy’s hockey player from Cathedral is Noah Webb, who plays with the New Ulm Public Eagles.

The squad is already off to a hot start this season with four wins in five games. This year’s team has a slew of young tal-ent, with only three seniors and 13 seventh through ninth graders.

Seniors include forward Amanda Broman, and defen-semen Tatum Schulz and Sa-mantha Bruner. Juniors on the team are forwards Kylie Paul-son and Rebekah Kolstad, and goaltender Katie Paulson. The girls’ next matchup is tomor-row night at 5:30 p.m. at home against the Winona Winhawks.

The wrestlers from Manka-to Loyola partner with those from St Clair to form the Saint Clair/Mankato Loyola wres-tling team, which is coached by Brandon Greiner. The team competes in the section 2A Valley conference.

The squad is led by seniors Dylan Boettcher, Chance Ofte-dahl, Jordan Schmitz, and John Goebel. Juniors on the squad include Gage Thom and Ben Grabowska. The wrestling team heads to Glencoe-Silver Lake for a dual on Saturday at 9 p.m. to continue 2AA action.

The Mankato East/Loyola boys hockey team is where Mankato Loyola players play hockey, and this year’s team is already off to a good start with their first win of the sea-

MANKATO EAST

Photo Courtesy of SPX PhotosIt's every girls basketball coach's dream of having a tall post player that can dominate down low. Well, Mankato East possesses three.

The Mankato East boys bas-ketball team has lost two straight to top teams in the state to begin the 2013-2014 season but will use the games as learning expe-rience for later in the year.

The team is coming off a six-win season last year and looks to improve on that mark led by a starting five that got to see some varsity action last year.

“The number one goal is we want to be playing our best bas-

ketball when we hit March. We know it will be a building pro-cess,” head coach Dave Makela said. “Where we are now and where we are going to hope-fully be at the end of the year will hopefully be two different things.”

Senior shooting guard Brock Margenthaler will be asked to hit the shots from the outside as well as get to the basket when the de-fense dictates, Makela said. Se-nior forward Matt Bornholdt will be expected to not only score from the inside this season but

DEREK LAMBERTStaff Writer

also get critical rebounds. Junior guards Gorg Alhag

and Mattu Chuol will also be expected to make contributions to the Cougars offense. Mankato East’s basketball team will fea-ture three guards on the floor at the same time and relies on their athleticism to make up for their lack of size.

Nic Seiler, the three-sport athlete, rounds out East’s starting five. Seiler was East’s starting quarterback but does not mind playing a less glorious role on the basketball floor. Seiler is a player that is going to be expected to do the very important ‘dirty work’ for the Cougars, contributing in ways that do not always show up on the box score.

“We consider ourselves to be a fairly athletic, but small team so for the most part. When we

get the opportunity, we want to get out and run, but if we are asked to set it up we will really have to be patient,” Makela said. “We would love to play as a good transition team, but like any good teams that you play on our schedule, when they do get back on defense you have to show your patience when you have to run a half-court offense.

The Cougars have been tested early by two of the best teams in the state. Two straight games against ranked opponents al-lowed the Cougars to see where they stand as team early in the season. Holy Family is ranked second while Rochester Century is a top-15 team in the state. The Cougars suffered losses, but can learn a lot from the games.

“What doesn’t hurt you will help you. We are looking at these

first two games as a measuring stick, where we are at, what we need to build on,” Makela said. “We love the challenge. Our kids are not backing down. It is easy to just go ahead and play another team, but for us, we are relishing the competition and we will give it our best shot, but more impor-tantly, it will let us know where we stand as a basketball team.”

The Mankato East girls bas-ketball team will feature three post players who all expect to play college basketball.

The Cougars will return three six foot players (one player is 5’11) that are will lead the team. The three players include: 5-foot-11 senior forward Claire Ziegler, 6-foot senior forward Taylor Karge and 6-foot-2 sophomore

NICOLLET

Nicollet High School is rep-resented in the word of athletics by several winter sport programs this year, not the least of them being the boys basketball team, coached by Jeff Zimmerman. And this winter, Coach Zimmer-man hopes to lead his Raiders against a difficult Valley confer-ence.

The Raiders welcome many veteran faces back to this year’s squad, including three seniors, six juniors and four sophomores. Seniors who will be counted onto lead the team this year on the court include forwards Matt Fischer and Cody Otto and cen-ter Matt Christenson.

Juniors representing the team are forwards Travis Murphy, Desmond Wills and Jay Hen-drycks, guards Kenny Fischer and Colin Bloemke and center Aaron Lloyd. Sophomores in-clude guards Marshall Barrer, Gavin Thomsen and Gavin Nou-rie and center Noah Lloyd. The Raiders start their year off on the first of December against Janes-ville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School.

A partnership between Nicol-

let High, Waseca, Blue Earth Area High, Maple River and Lake Crystal-Welcome Memo-

rial exists to make the Crystal Valley Area girls and boys alpine skiing team. This year, the team

LUKE CARLSONStaff Writer

is coached by John Romberg and Jeff Cole.

The team competes in a con-ference that includes the likes of Mankato West, Rochester Cen-tury, Rochester John Marshall and even a few city teams like Mound Westonka and Minne-apolis Southwest. Girls on the team include senior Sarah Mitch-ell, juniors Ashley Cole and Sa-mantha Davis and eighth graders Laci Dulas and Lexi Hansen.

The boys’ side of the roster adds seven more skiers to the team, including juniors Alex Roesler, Drew Kortuem, and Nick Lein, freshman Reid Han-sen, and eighth graders Derek Krumwiede, Jake Cole and Mi-chael Larson.

Another co-op that Nicollet is a part of is the Lake Crystal Wel-come Memorial Area wrestling squad, which is a partnership between Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial and Nicollet High School. The wrestling team is coached by Andre Harnitz, with assistant coaches Cory Harnitz and Dean Tibbetts also helping out with this year’s squad.

The team this year is full of young players ready to contrib-ute. Well over half of the roster is made up of seventh, eighth,

and ninth graders, creating a minority of upperclassmen to lead the team. Seniors wrestlers on the team are Devan Hagge, Dylan Keck, Ray Voges and Sid-ney Scott. The team starts out their regular season on tomorrow against Fairmont/Martin County West High School.

The Nicollet Raiders once again team up with a pair of Mankato schools in Mankato East and Mankato Loyola to form the Mankato East/Loyola boys hockey squad. Coached by Adam Fries, this year’s squad is primed and ready to take on the Big Nine conference with a largely veteran group of athletes present. Seniors ready to lead the team into the season this winter include forwards Vince Colbrun, Nick Courrier, Brad Johnson, Brandon Treinen, Derek Helms and Sean Allan, along with de-fenseman Shane Sellner.

The team shouldn’t be lacking in the leadership and experience categories this year as there is not an athlete on the roster un-der the age of sophomore. The boys boast ten juniors and six sophomores outside of their crop of seniors. The team has already started out with a promising 5-3

SLEEPY EYE ST. MARY'S

The Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights head into their winter sports season coming off a successful fall.

The Knights’ football team went a perfect 12-0 heading into the state semifinals before losing to Dawson-Boyd, one game shy of the state championship game. The vol-leyball team also had success.

The St. Mary’s volleyball squad went 15-12 on their quest for the state tournament before falling to B.O.L.D. High School in the section 2A tournament.

Heading into winter sports, the Knights hope to repeat the success they has last season. The girl’s basketball team went 17-10 last winter while going 11-5 in the Tomahawk conference. After graduating seniors from a year ago, the Knights remain optimistic.

“We lost six seniors from last year’s team but feel good about what we have coming back this season,” head coach Bruce Woitas said. “We will have seven seniors and six juniors out this year and most of the seniors out this year saw action last year.”

To fill the hole left by graduating seniors, St. Mary’s will look to their juniors to help them with some depth.

“Our B team also had a good season last year so the incoming juniors will fit nicely into what we want to do this year,” Woitas said.

Senior guard Nikki Carr will lead the way for the Knights in her third varsity season. Carr is noted for her great defensive play and will be a leader for the team. Other senior guard Larissa Helget will be looked to for some outside scoring for the Knights, and senior guard Jamie Marti will have her presence felt with her speed on the court after missing most of last season with an ACL injury.

Some up and comers on the team will include junior post Sabrina Portner, who had a real strong season last year while playing on the B squad. Also, junior forward Becca Schmitz is a player that can play both inside and outside for the Knights, and juniors Tori Anderson, Laura Pelzel, Kennedy Pelzel and Becca Zinniel will see playing time this season while looking to contribute.

Heading into the season, St. Mary’s has their sights set high for conference play.“We feel we can finish in the top four of the conference again this year, but it will be tough each night

out,” Woitas said. Conference rivals include New Ulm Cathedral, Sleepy Eye Public High School and Springfield. With

the team that the Knights have this season, they feel their speed will allow them to play an aggressive style against their opponents.

In the Tomahawk conference, the Cedar Mountain-Comfrey co-op along with Springfield will chal-lenge the Knights for the top spot of the conference heading into the sectional tournament.

and ninth graders, creating a minority of upperclassmen to lead the team.

The team has already started out with a promising 5-3

win against Worthington High School and is set for a big show-down with conference rival Mankato West on Tuesday, De-cember 3rd.

As far as fall sports go at Nicollet High, the girls’ vol-leyball team met some tough resistance against the Valley conference this season. Bring-ing a young team into the fold this fall, head coach Judy Rad-ke and assistant coaches Brian Ruedy, Megan Woodruff and Sue Boddy led their team to a 6-17 overall record.

The girls were led by a pair of seniors in defensive-specialist Julia Giefer and set-ter Sara Meurer. Following up the veteran seniors are the juniors, including libero Cassie Juberien, setter Alyssa Wagner, middle-hitter Emily Fischer and outside-hitters Sarah Moli-tor, Kaitlyn Bode, and Thea Al-len. Sophomores on the squad include middle-hitter Mindy Poehler, outside-hitter Emily Skrien and setter Kaylee Dief-enderfer. The Raiders also had one eighth grader on the team in outside-hitter Lindsey Boerger.

The football program at Nicollet High gave their school many a reason to cheer this fall when they went undefeated with an 11-0 record in the regu-lar season against the Southern

Minnesota Confederacy con-ference before falling to Under-wood High in the first round of the state tournament. Coached by Tom Murphy, the Raiders stormed to victory after vic-tory, piling up a titanic amount of points against the likes of Southwest Star Concept High (57-0), Cleveland High (63-0), Randolph High (78-58) and Al-den-Conger High (70-22).

But possibly the best part about the Raider’s undefeated season is that when looking at the roster, it is fair to say that this season’s success very well may be repeatable with the amount of athletes returning for next year’s campaign. The Raiders only graduate three seniors in wide receiver Matt Fischer, running back Matt Christenson and offensive line-man John Scheurer.

The Raider’s future rests in good hands with seven fresh-man, six sophomores and eight juniors returning to the squad. Juniors this year who will be expected to lead the team next year as seniors include running back Travis Murphy, wide re-ceivers Colin Bloemke, Kenny Fischer and Desmond Wills, of-fensive linemen Jack Zins, An-drew Radke and Jay Hendrycks, as well as the Raider’s starting quarterback Dalton Elliot.

The boy’s basketball team is coming off a great season last winter where they finished with a very impressive 23-4 record. The Knights made it all the way to the sections final where they fell to Holy Trin-ity, who advanced to the state tournament.

Led by senior forwards Mike Hirsch and Mike Zinn-iel and guard John Brandl, St. Mary’s will look to be crowned the conference champion and make it over the final hump of the sectional tournament that they came so close to doing last season.

St. Mary’s has 11 students in their school that also play hockey in a co-op with New Ulm Public High School. Se-nior Lexie Weiss, junior Erika Ries and eighth grade students Dani Weiss and Ali Beltz play for the girl’s team. The boy’s team gets a large portion of their team from St. Mary’s as there are seven students who participate in the co-op.

Cole Reinarts is the only senior hockey player from St. Mary’s, while there are three juniors in Brandon Helget, Cody Gilliland and Jon Kopa-cek. Rounding out the hockey boys are sophomores Jared Beltz and Alex Sellner.

The New Ulm hockey pro-gram has had major success in recent years, reaching the state tournament in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Also in the New Ulm hockey co-op are Sleepy Eye Public High School and New Ulm Cathedral.

Girls basketball looking for new leading scorer this winter

The Lake Crystal Wel-

comme Memorial girl’s basketball team goal is to improve from the season a year ago, but the team is in a state of flux entering the 2013-2014 season.

The Knights finished last year with a 7-18 record and lost their leading scorer after she transferred to Mankto Loyola and have their senior point guard just beginning to practice.

“Hopefully we would like to build on last year’s record, that’s one of our goals,” head coach Wiens said.

The Knights will be returning 12 players includ-ing two seniors and seven juniors. So LCWM will have some experience returning this year, but it will need some of those returning players to step up this year.

“Hoping that some of the sophomores (of a year ago) as juniors will pick up their game a little,” Wiens said.

The Knights will look for leadership from senior guard Becca Norgren, who just recently returned to practice. Norgren was a effective guard a year ago and has the ability to be a good dribble penetrator.

“I’m hoping she will bring leadership on and off the court,” Wiens said.

After losing the leading scorer from a year ago, the question remains who will be the major scoring contributors. At this point, the plan is to make it a

team effort.“It will hopefully be a scoring by committee

type deal,” Wiens said. “We are just hoping the girls are going to have fun and not be afraid to shoot this year.”

The Knights will feature a high tempo offense looking to push the ball up the court whenever it is possible. Defensively LCWM play a majority man to man while mixing in some zone defenses as well.

“We are just going to go out have fun,” Wiens said. “All the girls are very enthusiastic. They are very energetic, and they are ready for the season to start. They want to prove a lot of people wrong.”

LCWM will be competing in the Valley confer-ence that will be likely led by Mankato Loyola and Martin County West. The Knights kicked off their season Tuesday hosting Alden-Conger High School and play again today at 7:30 p.m. at Cleveland High School.

The future looks bright for the Knights, but this season may give you a good look at what the team will be capable of in the years to come.

“Hopefully the older girls will pass some of their work ethic down to the younger ones. We do have a good group in the younger grades, and I just hope that they all contribute and have fun and just keep on building our program up and get it back to where it was a few years back.”

Seniors representing the team this year are forwards Vince Colbrun, Nick Courrier, Brad Johnson, Brandon Trein-en, Derek Helms, Sean Allan and defenseman Shane Sellner. The boys hockey team contin-ues their season with a tough Big Nine conference matchup against the Winona Winhawks tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in All Seasons Arena.

This fall, the Mankato East/Loyola partnership also had their girls swimming and diving team compete in the Big Nine conference. Coached by Aman-da Stevens, the girls fought hard all season long. There were several seniors that led and contributed to this year’s team and they will be sorely missed after graduation in the spring. They include Ashley Robinson, Chandra Bouma, Liza Sargent and Mariah Bauer.

Juniors on the squad that will be seniors next year include Amy Lange, Emma Noren, Emma Silber, Erica Ellstrom, Evelynne Larson, MacKenzie Juberien and Mariah Enter. And even with all of the gradu-ating student athletes, the girls look forward to welcoming back a large amount of young talent with one sophomore, seven ninth graders, one eighth grader and one seventh grader returning to the team next fall.

LAKE CRYSTAL-WELLCOME MEMORIAL

TCU has ample talent in all winter programs for the upcom-ing year and years to follow.

The Titans’ varsity-wrestling roster has five seniors, six ju-niors, seven sophomores, two freshman, five eighth graders and three seventh graders.

Third year head coach Brian Mikel looks optimistically at their upcoming season.

“We’re looking forward to the upcoming season. We have some new faces in the room that may

help us fill the upper weights,” Mikel said.

“I think having a couple of kids do well at state last year adds to the excitement for this season.”

Mikel thinks his athletes’ “laid back attitude” is great be-cause they “definitely flip the switch when they get out on the mat.”

Mikel expects the Titans to be led by his veterans:

Senior Josh Selly is 160 pounds and finished second in state last year. Senior Mason Brownlee is 138 pounds and

ADAM PIERSONStaff Writer

placed fourth in state last year. Sophomore Alex Burns weighs 285 pounds and took third in sec-tions last year.

Mikel expect his youth to con-tribute as well:

Freshman Jonah Johnson weighs 135 pounds and took fourth in sections last year. Freshman Mason Rutt is 152 pounds and placed fifth in sec-tions last year. Eighth grader Jack Mueller weighs in at 126 and eighth grader Justin Kopet is 106 pounds.

“These kids have wrestled throughout elementary and have a lot of experience even though they are quite young,” Mikel said.

Stressing hard work, condi-tioning, basic fundamentals and good behavior, Mikel hopes to get multiple individuals to state and have a winning dual meet record.

“Our upcoming schedule is tough but wrestling a high level of competition is the only way to improve,” Mikel said.

Mikel, who was the Titans’ as-sistant coach for 17 years, is hop-ing their bigger, faster, stronger program in the offseason helps the Titans win the Minnesota River conference this season.

The Titans’ boys basketball team is in a very similar situa-tion, enhanced with seven se-niors, four juniors and five soph-omores makes for an exciting year ahead.

First year head coach Ben Haugen looks to see how their offseason work pays off.

“There are a lot of challeng-es for them as they learn a new system. You can tell our players know we have the potential to do some great things this year. They bring great determination, en-ergy and enthusiasm to practice,” Haugen said.

“We do a lot of individual work emphasizing offensive skills. The gym is open five days a week for the players. We also played in a summer league and hope to get involved in more team camps and tournaments in the future.”

The Titans expect major con-tribution from their returning players.

“Senior Pat Lloyd’s quickness makes him an excellent defender. He has a quick first step on of-fense and shoots well from the

outside. Senior Nate Chadderdon is 6-foot-8 with strength and ath-leticism. He has improved his of-fensive game since last year and is a great rebounder on both ends of the floor,” Haaugen said.

Haugen expects a lot out of his underclassmen as well.

“Junior Jamison Beullke is a good athlete who has the ability to attack the rim. He was one of our more dedicated players in our summer program and has re-ally improved his game,” Haugen said.

“Our sophomore class went 29-1 last season. They put in a lot of time this summer and several players will be competing for varsity minutes this season.”

Haugen and his team expect to get better each game as they

SAINT JAMES

Despite the school size, St. James’ boys basketball team lac-es up 11 seniors, six juniors and one sophomore.

Steve Walker is entering his twenty-third season as head coach at St. James. Between spending time in the weight room, open gym and summer league, Walker is confident they will have an exciting season.

“Our team knew that with hard work over the summer and a number of key returning play-ers we could have a great season ahead,” Walker said.

“We return two all-conference players from last year. 6-foot-3 forward Zach Brandts has been a four-year starter and went over the 1000 point mark last year. 6-foot-6 guard/forward Walker Froehling was also all-confer-ence and leads our team in many statistcal categories including 3-point shots.”

Expecting to compete for the SCC title as well as the sub sec-tion title, Walker’s team knows there will be tough competition.

“We are undersized, and we are also the smallest school in our league so we have to be mentally and physically tough to compete year in and year out,” Walker said.

Walker was the head coach at

Hoffman-Kensington for three years prior to coming to St. James in 1988. Walker and his team look forward to taking on their rivals New Ulm this season.

St. James’ girls basketball program looks to channel the energy from a bitter defeat that ended their year last season.

Second year coach Adam Schroeder hopes their week long camp in the summer, basketball league at New Ulm Cathedral and three on three leagues in town pays off this sea-son.

“Losing 70-27 to Worthing-ton, the sub-section champs, hopefully left a bitter taste in their mouths,” Schroeder said.

Needing motivated athletes, St. James expects to be led by veteran players.

“We are returning seven letter winners from last year. Sopho-more Julia Beckius led the team in scoring and steals last year, junior Brenda Cervantes was second in rebounding last year, sophomore Allison Brandts and junior Emily Bottem both played big minutes at the point guard position,” Schroeder said.

Pushing the importance of de-fense, Schroeder knows creating turnovers and easy is important.

“We expect to be competi-tive in all games regardless of our size. We do not a "true post player" on our team, so we will

have to play big,” Schroeder said.St. James wrestling looks to

replace an irreplaceable coach and move forward with ample potential on the mat.

Former coach Eugene Hil-debrandt coached at St. James for 27 years. Leading his team to 21 South Central Conference Championships, dual and team as well as multiple state indi-vidual qualifiers, state individual place winners and state champi-ons.

With big shoes to fill, Les Siem steps in as the head coach for the St. James. Siem gradu-ated from St. James in 1995 as a six-year wrestler in the program and Siem was a five-time letter winner, posting a 99-55-2 varsity record.

Siem volunteered as a varsity coach in 1998 when St. James won the state team champion-ship. Being involved with St. James for sometime, Siem should have no troubles taking over as head coach.

St. James has numerous ath-letes to watch for this upcoming winter sports season, look for them to make an impact in the South Central conference.

NEW ULM

Eagles boys basketball build around trio

of returners

The New Ulm high school boys basketball team will use its transition game and ability to at-tack the rim to its advantage this season.

The Eagles run a motion of-fense, but when their defense gives their offense an opportuni-ty to get out and run Eagles have the athleticism to take advantage.

“We would like to push the ball when the opportunity pres-ents itself. We want to put pres-sure on defense and try to attack the rim and take advantage of mismatches,” head coach Steve Foley said. “I think transition is one of our keys. We have some quick guys and guys that can at-tack the rim, but in order to do that you got to play good defense and rebound.”

Senior guard Jackson Yackely and senior forward Grant Kann-egiesser are the two “main stays” each night on the team and will be expected to lead the way for the Eagles.

Yackely is the team’s cap-tain for the second consecutive year and Kannegiesser will be one of the primary scorers and rebounders on the team. Kan-negiesser had 20 points and six rebounds in the first game of the year against Chaska.

The Eagles will also rely on junior guard Tanner Ogren and senior center Tyler Dettrich also

to play important roles. Dettrich is a 6-foot-6 post player that has the size to be a presence down low, and Orgren will also have an important role in his first year playing on the varsity team.

“Tanner has shown some good skills last year on B squad. He shoots the ball real well and plays good defense,” Foley said. “We will kind for those guys to steady us and lead the way,” Fol-ey said.

The Eagles have a mixture of returning players and first-year varsity players. With three of five starters returning from last year, the experience could give them an advantage this season, but the hunger the younger kids have to contribute can also be a conta-gious positive for the team.

“It is nice to have that balance of kids that have been there and kids that will provide a spark,” Foley said.

New Ulm kicked off the sea-son with a nonconference loss to a good Chaska team that re-turned all five starters. New Ulm Public won’t see another SCC team until Jan. 9 with Fairmont coming for a visit. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

“I think we are excited for the season. We got a great attitude, and we hope that carries over to some wins this year,” Foley said. “Our goal is to get better. We just want to compete from buzzer-to-

get comfortable with their new system. They focus on communi-cation because Haugen believes if one person is not on the same page as the rest of the team, any good basketball team will take advantage of that.

They had two-a-day practices this year and that has brought the team together.

“Our players support their teammates in games and in practice with enthusiasm at all times,” Haugen said.

The Titans’ girls coach looks to implement a new system as well in his first year. Eric Specht spent seven seasons as the assis-tant coach for New Prague’s girls basketball team.

“We understand there is work to be done, but the girls seem pretty excited for the start of the year,” Specht said.

“We expect to compete in ev-ery game. Wins will come with hard work and great effort.“

“This year we will be lead by senior centers Alyshia Angileno and Maddie Chadderdon. In the backcourt, we have a couple of

junior athletic guards in Court-ney Hentges and Sarah Holicky who do a nice job of attacking the rim.”

“We have some upcoming athletes with potential as well. Freshman Joslyn Vargo has shown signs of having the abil-ity to be a true point guard. We have an eighth grade group led by Gabby Robinson, Cami Var-go, Caitlin Jindra and Lainey Si-mon that have the potential to be a solid group in the future.”

With hopes that the bigger, faster, stronger program helps when the Titans are tested play-ing three games a week for three of the four weeks in January.

“We had some girls put in a good amount of time this sum-mer. I am excited to see how our kids respond to a new season. Coming off a 5-22 record, there is obvious room for improve-ment," Specht said. "With that said, I truly believe we can sur-prise some teams this year."

Tri-City United has a lot to look forward to this year and for multiple years to come.

TCU “We had some girls put in a good amount of time this summer. I am excited to see how our kids respond to a new sea-son. Coming off a 5-22 record, there is obvious room for improvement. With that said, I truly believe we can surprise some teams this year.” continued from 9

going above .500 this season. We need to start controlling the things we have control over first. Starting with our attitude, effort, and focus. If we do that, this team will be one to remember, and Cleveland basketball will continue in the right direction,” Frederickson said. “The future at Cleveland is very bright. This will be an exciting season. I am very proud to be Cleveland's coach. Go Clippers!”

Girls Basketball

With numbers at a low point this year, the Cleveland Clippers girls basketball team will be re-lying on the quality of their play-ers to win games.

Senior Taylor Holicky will help provide the scoring punch the Clippers need. A six-foot senior, Holicky crossed the 1,000-point milestone a year ago and was an all-conference selec-tion as well as a team MVP from a year ago. Showing her versatil-ity, she also posted a team-high 117 steals.

“With varsity experience re-turning around her, we will have a chance to have a very success-ful season. She has worked very hard on her game and continues to improve,” head coach George Schoenborn said.

Holicky and 5-foot-4 Cylie Hankins have both been on var-

sity since their freshman years. According to a quote taken

from the St.Peter Herald, “Cylie does a great job at point guard,” Schoenborn said. “Having played varsity for this long, she knows and understands what we as a team want to accomplish. Cylie excels both on offense where she runs the offense and on defense where she usually guards the op-ponent’s best guard. These two (Holicky and Hankins), with their experience, will be a good nucleus to build around.”

5-6 juniors Anna Ely and Cassidy Kopet will also contrib-ute in a major way. “Anna and Cass can play a few different po-sitions, which is important with our numbers this year,” Schoen-born said. “Both are very athletic and, like the rest of the girls, ex-tremely coachable.”

Sophomores Amy Den Herd-er and Stephanie Holicky are also expected to contribute.

“We should be a fairly suc-cessful club,” Schoenborn said. “We have a decent schedule with a lot of home games, where we can feed off the crowd. We should be able to end up with a record of .500 or better. We have some new teams scheduled this year that we haven’t played before and we have some teams that went to state last year. Hope-fully by playoff time we can at least get a home game in the first

round and see what happens after that.”

Newcomer Megan Hob-son is expected to make a dif-ference. “Megan will be a great addition to the team as she fits right in with the others in regards to work ethic and athleticism,” Schoenborn said. “And with missing a year, her basketball skills are good too, but will need some fine-tuning.

Other newcomers in-clude Amanda Smith and Mack-enzie Baumgartner.

“We will have a small, in numbers, team this year, but I think if we keep coming to practice, work hard to get better, we will surprise some teams,” Schoenborn said.

“ We should be ready to go for our first game. This is a great group of girls, who’ve worked with us coaches for a number of years. This will allow us to advance and grow togeth-er as a team at a quicker rate. It should be a fun year.”

Chargers fill gaps left by seniors with energy

The Minnesota Valley Lu-theran Chargers are ready for another winter in the Tomahawk conference. After a fall season that saw a turnaround by the football team; they turn their at-tention to winter sports.

The Charger football team got off to a 0-3 start but found their way and finished with a 4-4 re-

cord. Other fall sports such as cross country and girls and boys soccer play in a co-op with New Ulm Public High School.

Now heading into the winter, the Chargers have big expecta-tions for their sports teams.

The girl’s basketball team fin-ished second in the Tomahawk conference last season with an impressive 23-5 overall record and a 13-3 record in the confer-ence. Their season was ended by

Lester Prairie-Holy Trinity in the subsection finals last year, who went on to the section 2A final to Mankato Loyola who went on to the state tournament.

After a great season in 2012-2013, the Chargers have high hopes for another great year. After losing some key players to graduation, other players will have to fill the gaps.

“We have a good core of se-niors that should lead us to an-

DEREK LAMBERTStaff Writer

other successful year,” said head coach Dave Biedenbender. “I think we should be able to com-pete for the conference and sec-tion crowns.”

They may be tested, however, as there are some good teams that will compete with them. New Ulm Cathedral is a big rival for the Chargers, and Sleepy Eye and Wabasso have also become rivals in recent years.

“There are many good teams in the Tomahawk Conference this season,” said Biedenbender. “Wabasso should be the favorite, but Sleepy Eye, Minnesota Val-ley Lutheran, and Springfield should all be able to compete for the conference title.”

As far as the section goes, the outlook is much the same as last season. Mankato Loyola will be the favorite to return to the state tournament out of section 2A. In MVL’s subsection, Lester Prai-rie-Holy Trinity, Springfield and Sleepy Eye could challenge the Chargers for the title.

The Chargers also return a good crop of players this year to help them contend for a section title. Senior point guard Char-lotte Pfingsten returns and is a great ball handler and shooter, as well as a tough defender for the Chargers. Other top seniors for MVL include Nicole Moldstad,

who can be noted as an athletic player with a great deal of speed to her game and Mariah Stein who is known for her shooting ability. Leading the way will be junior post Anna Munsen, who has a well-rounded game and led the Chargers in scoring and rebounds last season as a sopho-more; and senior post Alexa Al-fred who also is a player who will be relied on to score points and has a free throw percentage of 75 percent.

The boy’s basketball team had a rough year last season as they finished 4-22 and ninth in the Tomahawk Conference, one spot ahead of last place New Ulm Cathedral. The outlook is good, however, as they were close to finishing in the middle of the pack.

While Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s finished at the top of the confer-ence ahead of Cedar Mountain-Comfrey and Springfield, MVL was only two games behind sixth-place Gibbon-Fairfax-Win-throp and one game behind the seventh-placed teams Sleepy Eye Public and Wabasso.

The Chargers also have a hockey player among them. Sophomore Matthew Mielke will be participating in the hockey co-op with New Ulm.

SIBLEY EAST

The Wolverines of Sibley East finished their football season on a positive note. After starting out 1-3, the Wolverines finished out winning three of their last five games to finish 4-5. Both the girls and boys soccer players at Sibley East participate in a co-op with Glencoe-Silver Lake, where the boy’s soccer team fin-ished 0-16-1 while the girls team finished 1-14. Also, girl’s tennis players also have a co-op with Glencoe-Silver Lake, who fin-ished 7-15.

Heading into the winter sea-son, the wrestling team looks to continue their winning ways.

Last year, the Wolverines went 23-8 on the mat on their way to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament. Expecta-tions are much the same for this season.

“Our expectations for the up-coming season are to hopefully compete for a conference title in the Minnesota River as well as make a return trip out of section 4A” said head coach Chad John-son.

Despite the success on a state level, the Wolverines have fin-ished in the middle of the Min-

nesota River conference the past two seasons. The last two years, Sibley East has finished behind Watertown Mayer and Scott West. Their goal for this year is to climb up the standings and finish towards the top.

The biggest rivals in the con-ference are Norwood Young America and Scott West, while their toughest section opponent looks to be Nicollet.

The returning wrestlers for the Wolverines boast a fairly im-pressive resume, which is prom-ising for their season.

Two-time state champion Nathan Rose returns to the 195-pound division, along with state runner-up Hunter Retzlaff who competes at 138 pounds. Aside from these two are state fifth place winner Jason Meyer, who wrestles at 126 pounds, state sixth-place winner Austin Brockhoff who wrestles at 132 pounds and state entrant Mitch Wentzlaff.

The boy’s basketball team finished 7-7 in their conference last season as well as a 13-12 overall record. Finishing fifth in the conference, the Wolverines hope to compete this season with last year’s conference champion Jordan and second-place May-er Lutheran as well as redeem

themselves from last year’s sec-tion 5AA final loss to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winstead by only one point.

The outlook is good for this team, however, as they are a team filled heavily with upper class-men. The Wolverines bring back six seniors and seven juniors to their team that nearly made the state tournament last year.

The girl’s basketball team at Sibley East finished with a 9-16 record last season including a season ending loss in the first round of the sectional tourna-ment.

Finishing sixth in the Minne-sota River conference last year, the Wolverines will be chas-ing Jordan and Norwood Young Academy for the conference title.

Also having a fairly veteran and experienced roster, the Wol-verine girls also have a couple of newcomers. Sophomore guards Mckayla Stumm and Katie Tuchtenhagen will come in and learn from the veteran players and hope to contribute as young players on this squad.

While the basketball teams look to improve their records and climb up the conference stand-ings, the wrestling team returns to the mat looking to return to the state tournament again.

State Trophy in sight for grapplersDEREK LAMBERTStaff Writer center Allison Taylor.

Ziegler has been playing with the varsity team since she was a freshman and has devel-oped into a very versatile de-fender. She has the ability to guard good post and wing play-ers and will be expected to do many important roles for the Cougars, including be a leading scorer. Ziegler recently commit-ted the to the home town school of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

“She is a good scorer; she is an excellent rebounder, averaged 18.5 points last year and around 11 rebounds, so she is a cog in what we do,” Barger said. “She can handle the ball very well for a post player, and we are going to look to her to play a lot of one-on-one defense against our opponents’ best players.”

Karge is a very good shooting post player with the rare ability to score down low and knock down the jump shots from deep. Her height gives her the ability to also be a well-rounded de-fender Barger said. Taylor plays center and does a lot of the dirty work including playing tough inside post defense and strong rebounding. Still basketball is a

team sport and the Cougars will need some players outside of their “big three” to step up this year.

“We got a bunch of young kids that are looking to crack the lineup and are working hard in practice for those varsity spots,” Barger said.

The Cougars traditionally have been a fast break team that likes to push the ball in transi-tion but will have to work with their players, who may not be as ideal as others for a high tempo offense.

“In the past we have been an up tempo team and pushed the ball up the floor, but that hasn’t changed. Our personnel has changed a little bit so we are getting used to working with some kids to push the ball up the court,” Barger said. “The nice thing about Claire and Tayler is they love running fast break basketball…They are used to it.”

The Cougars will kicked off their season with three straight home games starting Thursday against Rochester Century fol-lowed by Friday and Saturday games against Winona and Willmar, respectively.

WASECA

These Bluejays prefer winterWaseca dusts themselves off from last year and look forward to putting programs back on track

The Waseca High School Bluejays’ winter sports teams are back and ready for action. After a successful winter season last year, the teams are ready to repeat their successes from a year ago.

The Bluejay wrestling team had some trouble last year due to not being able to fill their roster to a full squad and finished 0-5. Head coach Zach Hall remains optimistic though.

“Our numbers have grown this year, and we will have not only a full roster, but a more competitive team,” Hall said. “We have some new additions to the team that will fill some big holes in our lineup.”

A very young team, Waseca hopes that a full roster is a sign of things to come.

“We are very excited to see the program growing and believe there is a bright future ahead.” Hall Said.

The Bluejays don’t have any one rival but are fired up anytime they get on the mat against a conference oppo-nent. They have a very competitive schedule in the South Central Conference and every match is important.

Senior Tristan Hoy wrestles in the 138-145 pound di-vision and is a returning letter winner who is expected to be a top wrestler and leader for the Bluejays. Sopho-more Dylan Winegar is another returning letter-winner and wrestles in the 220-pound division. Waseca also has some wrestlers returning from injuries some new, young talent that they expect to make some noise this season.

The SCC conference is a competitive one, and the Bluejays hope to improve from last season.

“The Waseca program has finally begun to rebuild,” said Hall, “we were at the bottom of the conference last year, but we expect big things out of some new faces to our program this season.”

The basketball programs at Waseca also look to build

on last winter’s success. The girls’ basketball squad went 16-10 last winter and

were crowned the SCC champions.“It was a big deal to the program because it was only

the fourth time in history it has happened” said head coach Joan Conway.

After graduating six seniors from last season’s squad, five of whom played significant minutes, they will look for new faces to take over the team.

“Kids who were role players last year will need to con-tribute this year,” Conway said.

Conway hopes the team can finish in the top half of the conference and be playing their best basketball by playoff time.

Although no specific rivalries with any opponents, Fairmont and St. Peter look to be the favorites in the SCC and who the Bluejays hope to compete with this season.

Some key returners for the girls basketball team are junior forwards Katie Tlusty and Sam Hiller, junior guard Mikayla Rolling and junior center Kirstin Sim-mons. These players will be essential in replacing the graduating seniors who led last year’s team to a confer-ence championship.

The boys’ basketball team finished 13-14 overall last season with a 5-5 conference record in the SCC. Nine let-ter winners return along with four starters for a team that expects to be much improved.

“We expect to compete for the conference and sec-tion championship” said head coach Todd Dufault. “If we continue to work hard, we should have a very competitive team.”

Fairmont is looked at as a team that will be very good in the SCC conference, and Waseca hopes to battle them for the top spot as their biggest rival.

“Fairmont is the favorite,” Dufault said. “We expect to be a contender along with St. Peter.”

Dufault also points out other teams that could chal-lenge the top half of the conference.

“St. James has a veteran club back, Blue Earth always has good athletes and New Ulm will be much improved.”

Aside from the SCC, Maple River, St. Peter, Mayer-Lutheran, Glencoe Silver Lake and Jordan are teams to watch in a very tough section that the Bluejays will need to come out of to get to the state tournament.

Leading the way for the Bluejays are seniors Derek Williamson, Jake Busse, Josh Kummerfeldt, and Thomas O’Neil along with juniors Tyler Kolander and Shane St-reich and sophomore Nick Dufault.

On the ice, things look promising for the Bluejays this winter.

The boys’ hockey team finished 8-17-1 last season with a very sophomore heavy lineup. The Bluejays are led by now junior Cody Ulfers, who scored a team high 16 goals and 28 points last winter. Other juniors return-ing from last year’s team include JP Eykyn and Wyatt Krampitz who both scored 11 goals and 22 points last season, and Michael Priebe who scored ten goals. In be-tween the pipes will be junior Zac Weichert, who went 3-4 last season as a backup goaltender.

The big rival for the Bluejays is New Ulm, who has made the state tournament three of the last four seasons. Waseca should contend for a section championship this season, and may be one season away from making the state tournament when their experienced group of juniors becomes seniors.

The girls’ hockey team finished an impressive 14-8 last season and look to improve on their success from a

JWP's two towers lead Bulldogs to

successAs the boys squad looks to stir things up in a new conference, the girls team tries

to make the postseason, which hasn't been apart of the program since 2004.

Goals and hopes abound as the Janesville-Waldorf-Pember-ton boys basketball team pre-pares for the upcoming season.

New head coach Ted Ham-mond, the fourth one in as many years, is looking to return the program to the heights the team attained six years ago, a trip to state in Class A.

Returning seniors Max Bur-ley, York Thissen and Sawyer Gahler are expected to make sig-nificant contriubtions to the JWP

squad, a squad that finished the 2012-2013 season 10-15.

Hammond pegs Burley as a potential three-point threat, Thissen to provide post play and Gahler to continue his stellar varsity career.

Hammond also expects two 6-foot-5 junior post players to provide a scoring punch. Kyle Fisel and Ricky Johnson led JWP in scoring and rebounding last year as sophomores.

Hammond also expects Jor-dan Richardson and Tristan Koll to take up the point guard posi-tion and supply offense.

Johnson has proved he is not relegated to the post. According to Hammond he can step out and hit the three as well.

Hammond, knowing that the head coaching job has been a re-volving door in the recent past, seeks to stay for a while, and has pegged a lot of goals for the sea-son.

Amongst them, defense: Un-der Hammond, defense will be a priority for JWP with him setting a target of allowing no more than 54 points a game.

He wants to develop a pres-sure, man-to-man defense, a sys-tem that will force the offense’s

hand, and if used correctly, will force a lot of turnovers and breakaways. He wants the team to

shoot 70 percent from the free-throw line, even if he thinks it may be far fetched.

Hammond contends JWP’s strengths will be good team chemistry, basketball savvy and the ability to run the floor.

“We switched conferencesthis year by moving from the

Gopher Conference to the Valley Conference. So we lost some of our rivals such as NRHEG and Blooming Prairie,“ Hammond

said. “Big games will be plenti-

ful as the Valley is very strong. Nicollet, LCWM, Granada Hundley, St. Clair and Mankato Loyola will all be tough. We look forward to the season and hope we stay healthy.”

Girls Basketball

Experience and determina-tion are expected to contribute to Janesville-Waldorf Pemberton’s potential success in the 2013-2014 girls basketball season.

Head coach Taylor Possail is excited for the upcoming year. The team is looking to rebound after a 5-21 record last year, man-ufactured by one of the youngest teams in the state.

JWP will be moving out of the Valley Conference, and ac-cording to Possail, they should be more competitive with their new competition.

JWP will be returning 12 players, including three guards: Kennedy Strauss, Hannah Olson and Kaylee Anderson.

Strauss was the leading scorer as a sophomore, Olson started every game of her freshman campaign and Anderson, a soph-

omore, is a premier three-point shooter and passer.

Olson is the “floor general” of the team, providing critical lead-ership in crucial situations.

Coach Possail, at 24-years-old, is one of the youngest coach-es in the state.

“It’s kind of funny going up against coaches 30 years older than you,” Possail said.

Possail is looking to improve depth and continuing on getting the team valuable playing time to ensure that they are competitive.

He contends that the team as assembled has the needed expe-

rience. Team speed is expected to be a team strength, and ac-cording to Possail, JWP will be looking to push the tempo and win with depth.

Possail contends that .500 is a possibility, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished at JWP since 2004.

Games marked on the calen-dar include a December 19th tilt against United South Central and a game against Mankato Loyola in January.

“We lost a really close game against them at their place last year,” Possail said. “This year we play them at home.”

Waterville, a historical rival for JWP, will renew their rivalry in February, a game they are al-ready looking forward to.

Possail can sense a difference in this team.

“There’s a new feeling this year,” Possail said. “This is the hardest working group I have had.”

Now we move onMOUNTAIN LAKE

Photos Courtesy of Mountain Lake High SchoolThe girls' basketball team finished their 2013-2014 campaign with a 12-14 overall record and won six of 16 Red Rock Conference games.

Both the boys basketball squad and gymnastics team lost key athletes to graduation from last season,

but both squads have moved on and are ready for their seasons to begin.

With the loss of two all-conference players, the journey through the Red Rock Confer-ence will be a rough one for the boy’s basketball team in 2013-2014.

Luckily, last year’s leading scorer and rebounding will be returning to the hardwood for one more year as forward Carter Kirk dropped 24.5 points and grabbed 13.2 rebounds a night. The squad will build around the three-time All-Conference baller for this year’s campaign.

Since the 11-1 football made it

JOEY DENTONSports Editor

all the way to the Metrodome be-fore being knocked off by Grand Meadow 35-18, the basketball team was hindered with some athletes jumping on to the court later than usual. There’s still no reason for concern for head coach Shawn Naas.

“With the run of the MLA Football team will be behind but have a veteran squad to work with,” Naas said.

Kirk isn’t the only returner with an All-Conference honor, with 9.3 points, four rebounds and 5.1 assists per game last sea-son, guard Andrew Hempeck will look to be the big distrib-uter to the 6-foot-7 Kirk. Senior guards Cody Klassen and Zach Dickens will also be valuable as-sets to this veteran-heavy squad.

“We lost 2 All-Conference

players from a second straight run to the State Tournament, but we have a large senior class that gained much experience over the last 2 years,” Naas said.

Dickens put up 5.5 points and grabbed 2.5 rebounds a game, and Klassen averaged 7.7 points and 2.4 rebounds last season.

After running the table in a competitive Red Rock Confer-ence, finishing 24-6 overall and 14-2 in the conference, the Wol-verines look to start their season off right with their second game of the season taking place tonight at Mountain Lake High School against Springfield. Tip-off is set for 7:45 p.m.

It won’t be easy, but the Wol-verines posses the veteran power to overcome some obstacles in this conference.

“We hope to mold the senior class with some talented Juniors together as the season progresses and try to make a run in the Red Rock Conference and Sub-Sec-tion 2A again,” Naas said.

As the Windom/Mountain Lake Cobras graduated their two most consistent all-arounders in Megan Muller and Courtney En-gler, they are looking for their go-to gymnasts for their 2013-2014 campaign, but head coach Cheryl Bass isn’t concerned.

Three seniors, Hannah Kloss, Megan Theesfeld and Miki Bo-lin, look to step up and become the senior all-arounders.

“I’ve got three seniors that

will fill three spots and then fourth and fifth I’m going to kind of play around with,” Bass said.

The competition to fill those last two spots has three gymnasts fighting for it in sophomores Amy Muller and Tara Fast and seventh grader Mareah Carlson.

“There’s talent there. We just gotta have some time in the gym and get to the point we can it a four person team.”

For those who aren’t familiar with gymnastics, to get a team score, the top for scorers for your team is combined for the team score in the event. In high school, the vault, the bars, the beam and the floor are the events that take place.

“Basically all my girls can practice all-around. We do have them work all four events be-cause they compliment each oth-er,” Bass said.

Bass, a former gymnast for Minnesota State University, Mankato, noticed the toughest part is still finding that fourth gymnast who can put up good points on a consistent basis.

“That’s going to be the hard-est thing to fill for us right now because we don’t yet have that consistent person come in on all four events,” Bass said. “I’m going to be kind of looking at maybe a couple people to fill that spot.”

The squad circled the Mar-shall Invite on their calendars for this season because in the last two years, the squad got to see some new faces.

“When we go to Marshall we get to see new judges, we get to see new teams, get some new competition,” Bass said.

Looking at the conference, Bass has the upmost confidence they can finish on the topside in 2013-2014, but some of the teams will give them a run for their money.

“I think Worthington is going to be a tough one this year. They have some young kids coming on. Jackson has some good kids too,” Bass said.

The Cobras start their season off with a home match against Saint James on Saturday. They head to the Marshall Invite on Jan. 4, and they have another tournament on Jan. 18 called the JCC Tournament in Jackson County.

“We’re trying to keep com-petitive,” Bass said. “Not having a gym in the offseason makes it hard with people around here have gymnastics year-round.”

Trio of athletes excel in two sportsMAPLE RIVER

Photo Courtesy of SPX PhotosThe Grapplers of Maple River possess two captains that made it to the Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament last year.

The Maple River high school football team ended the season as Gopher-Valley Conference champions and Section 3AA runner-up’s. The Eagles went into the season without 12 se-niors from last year’s 7-3 confer-ence runner-up team, but finish the year with a 9-2 record mak-ing it too the Section 2AA finals.

“We just didn’t know what to expect. We knew we had a good senior core coming back. We had some young kids step up and our seniors stepped up,” said head coach Brian Schoneck “We start-

ed winning the beginning of the season and just kept rolling. The kids started believing in them-selves and gaining some confi-dence as they played and ended up having a great season.”

After winning the conference championship the Eagles made a run in the section that came up just one game short of making it to the Metrodome. Maple River started the section playoff with a 49-0 win over Windom. The Eagles followed the win with a 21-0 performance against Lu-verne giving them their second consecutive shutout win of the section playoffs. Sadly the dream died in the section finals losing 23-7 to Jackson high school.

LUCAS RYANStaff Writer

“Once we had the conference locked up we got a little selfish and wanted to go after the sec-tion too. Our kids played really well through the section,” Scho-neck said.

Senior wide out Casey Decker was probably the Eagles most valuable player Schoneck said. Decker played on both sides of the ball and was the Eagles go-to-guy who really carried the Eagles down the final stretch of the season.

Maple River’s leading rusher senior running back Aaron Trio finished with more than 1,000 rushing yards for the second con-secutive season.

“Those two were big time offensive contributors behind a pretty solid offensive line,” Scho-neck said.

Senior right tackle Brian Do-ering and senior right guard Ty-ler Olson anchored the Eagles offensive line and while also playing big roles on defense. All four players our contemplating playing college football, but has yet to commit to a school.

“It takes more than four guys to win at football. They had a lot of help, but they definitely led the way.”

Maple River will lose five se-niors going into next season, but the expectations remain high af-ter the the underclass men got a chance to see what it takes to be successful.

“They kind of know the for-mula. The formula is in place we just got to make sure they are fol-lowing it. If those kids do what they are supposed and come in with a great attitude, we are ex-pecting big things from our un-derclassmen again” Schoneck said.

team is led by the three captains that just got done leading the football team to the Section 2AA finals this year.

Seniors Aaron Trio, Olson and Decker will take their captain with them to the wrestling team where they will look to challenge for the top spot in a new confer-ence. Trio and Olson both made it to the Minnesota State High School Wrestling tournament, while Decker was injured in December causing his season to come to a premature end.

The team has moved confer-ences from the Valley Confer-ence to the Gopher Conference where they will now be tested by the likes of United South Central and Medford.

The team expectations have remained high following a sea-son that two wrestlers qualified

for the state tournament and sea-son that ended with the Eagles holding a 7-5 record in dual meets. One goal is to improve from last year, said head coach Dan Robbins.

The wrestlers will use a “very aggressive style on their feet” to out-point the opponent. The Eagles do not want to wrestle defensively, instead that want the aggressors.

The team kicks off their sea-son Tuesday when they travel to Blooming Prairie high school for a four-team meet involving Saint Clair/Mankato Loyola, Mankato East and the host, Blooming Prairie. The Eagles will return to action Saturday when they compete in the Blue Earth Area Tournament, which features sev-eral teams from the Mankato Area.

IMMANUEL LUTHERAN

Small schools shoots to make big impact

Immanueal Lutheran K-12 school in Mankato, Minn. has struggled with an average enroll-ment of nine students per class since 1983.

Despite a lack of numbers to assist in their success, one school’s varsity basketball programs look to make an impact.

The Immanuel Lutheran girls’ basketball team looks to start this sea-son off on the right foot after a disappointing ending last season.

Third year coach Kymberly Stelter looks to forget last year and watch her team step up this sea-son.

“We ended our season with a disappointing loss at our conference tournament. Although it was a tough loss at the time, I think with our almost completely new starting line-up, we will be able to come together as a new team,” Stelter said.

Thankfully the veterans returning to the Trojans this year are a solid foundation to build a basketball team on.

“Our one senior Harley Bode, will be a major leader on our team again this year and is a very versatile player for us. She has the quickness of a forward with the height of a post. I’m looking forward to what she’ll bring to our team again this year,” Stelter said.

“As a junior, Amber Matzke is a leader as a point guard and key shooting guard on our team. Her level-headed play and quickness up the court helps her teammates in our more challenging games.”

Considering a majority of their starters graduated last year, the Trojans will dress a young team. “Most of our freshman roster helped out on our JV last year. Andrea Wheaton as a post, Leanna Matz-

ke as a point guard and Hannah Stelter as a forward are all freshman who will have some great years to be able to play together. They will do a lot for our team this year with their quickness and overall excitement for defense,” Stelter said.

The relationships on Immanuel Lutheran’s girls’ basketball team are special compared to most schools. “The players on our team have a great cohesiveness. At this small of a school, your teammates are

more than just friends and players they are like sisters. We still work on trust and communication during gameplay, but since they are close to each other we don’t have a lot of drama, which I greatly appreciate,” Stelter said.

The relationship extends further than just the players. “My players know me fairly well as a coach and mentor. I value winning, but it is not our number one

goal either. I push hard work and sportsmanship on and off the court. We are a part of the Christian Ath-letic League and the values that go with that are very important. I coach with the intention that these girls are Christian female athletes and that athletics is helping prepare them for their futures as Christian young women. Nonetheless, we are a competitive team who practices hard to win,” Stelter said.

“Immanuel is a K-12 school, so I also encourage them to work with the younger teams because I think that it helps will mentorship, but also supports the idea that if they can teach it to someone else, they will be more likely to perform the skills well themselves. When time permits, we do team building activities or outings to college basketball games as well.”

“As a fairly young team, we definitely face a challenging year. Because of numbers we will only be fielding a varsity team. These girls will be stepping into games playing girls with sometimes twice as much experience as them if not more. We will try to play to our strengths as a quick, defensive team.”

The Immanuel Lutheran boys’ basketball team looks to compete this season with a handful of veteran players and a new head coach.

Anthony Harris has stepped in as head coach and looks forward to working with his team and watching them progress.

“The boys know they could have done better last year, but it didn’t go our way. We are looking forward to this season following a significant change of players in the teams in our league. A lot of teams lost tal-ented players and I think that will level out our playing field,” Harris said.

“I believe there are some players with hidden talents. I just need to figure out how to draw them out.” The boys’ team is no different from the girls, numbers are hard to come by but that doesn’t change

Harris’ expectations for the season. “We have a good ball handling, jump shooting guard in senior Talon Harris. We have an excellent wing

shooter in senior Axton Becker. As well as a very physically strong post player in senior Nathan Clobes who just started playing organized ball as a freshman. I’m really looking forward to the three of them putting on a good show this year,” Harris said.

The potential doesn’t end their for the Trojans though. “Aaron Salmon played varsity football with Loyola this year in eighth grade. He is tall and strong for

his age and with a little mentoring he will be a formidable post player. Also Luke Olmanson is a phenom-enal guard in seventh grade. His ball handling and speed have been unmatched by teams we’ve played against. These two will be ones to watch in the upcoming year,” Harris said.

Harris stresses a good attitude to his players, saying there is no room for bad attitudes in high school basketball. With group of players with varying expectations, Harris hopes to use he can help them work better as a team.

Only having nine players in 9-12 grade, Harris made it clear that each of his players will get playing time in order to attempt to keep up with public school opponents.

Despite the odds against the Trojans, Harris plans to shoot for the stars this season. Something him and Stelter both have in common.

"I believe there are some players with hidden talents. I just need to figure out how to draw them out," Harris said.

While the girls basketball team will experience the aftermath of seniors graduating, the boys look to take the SCC with key returners.

Fall Sports Review:The New Ulm boy’s soccer team made up of Minnesota Valley

Lutheran, New Ulm, Sleepy Eye and Clevland finished the year with a 10-5-1 record.

The team opened the season with a 5-2 loss in a conference matchup against Waseca 5-2 but followed the loss up with six straight wins. The Eagles won their first game of their section tournament in a 3-2 overtime thriller. New Ulm made it to the sec-ond round of the Class A Section 2 Finals this year, but their season came to an end there in a 4-2 loss at Worthington.

Junior midfielder Joshua Koelpin, senior forward Broderick Brown and junior defensemen Daniel Wessel were named All-SCC, and sophomore forward Noah Webb and junior defensemen Alex Bumgartner both were named honorable mention while sophomore goalie Jonathan Sehloff was named honorable mention goalkeeper.

The New Ulm volleyball team finished the season with a 13-14-1 record and five girls earning conference accolades.

Junior Briana Sieve, junior Alley Grejtak and senior Katie Forst were named All-Conference with senior Ellie Schneider and junior Bailey Hoffmeister earning honorable mentions.

The Eagles had an up and down season all year long, never able to string together more than three wins (or losses) in a row. New Ulm season ended Oct. 25 in the first round of the Section 3AA Tournament in a 3-2 loss to Worthington.

The girls soccer team finished with a 6-11 record, making it to the Section 2A Tournament quarter finals.

Senior midfielders Nicole Moldstad and Martha Balge were named All-SCC in girls’ soccer with senior defender Sarah Peter-son and sophomore defender Jordan Reinhart earning honorable mention honors.

SAINT PETER

Saints aim high on the hardwood this winter

While the girls basketball team will experience the aftermath of seniors graduating, the boys look to take the SCC with key returners.

This year, the St. Peter High School girls basketball team will feel the effects of graduation more than in the previous three years, according to Head Coach Bob Southworth.

“We will feel the effects of graduation and be playing girls with very little varsity experi-ence. We graduated over 80% of our scoring and 70% of our rebounding,” mentioned South-worth.

But this is also a year of ex-citement and new beginnings for the team and coach Southworth is not letting the recent exodus of much of his roster get him down about the year.

“What I am excited about is that we have some quality players in our program that will get op-portunities now. The cupboard is not bare; we have a few pieces to build upon,” said Southworth.

The head coach mentioned that this year will be much dif-ferent than prior years due to the bunch of new and inexperienced players coming onto the varsity team. Southworth says that it will be a season that begins with the question of who fits where in the roster and trying to put play-ers where they can best use their strengths, even if it means play-ing a different brand of basket-ball than in previous seasons.

The head coach keeps find-ing ways to be positive about the season. Although most of the players do not have any varsity experience, he says that it will be

“fun to see who takes advantage of their opportunities in practice and games and not let the pres-sure get to them.”

The coach continued by stat-ing that he feels the team does have enough talent to compete for a conference championship and that the Saints will be com-petitive in the Section and sub-section as well.

The St Peter boys basketball program is a different story this year with many players on the roster returning for their senior year, including three seniors with varsity experience. For-wards Tommy Steidler and Kolin Bartlett, and guard Cody Erick-son, all three named captains of this year’s squad, will be counted on to lead the team this year on the court.

Bartlett is coming off a sec-ond consecutive season that was cut short by a severe knee injury and looks to stay healthy and productive in his final year. He has high hopes that he will be back to full strength. Steidler offers a unique inside/outside threat at the forward position and Erickson is a great leader on the basketball court as the teams premiere point guard.

Sean Keating steps in this winter as the Saints new head coach and is poised to take over a program that has produced many wins and collegiate players over the last several years. Keating believes that there are no lim-its on the potential of this years team. The team is led by eight seniors and two juniors, but is also bolstered by a strong sopho-

more class that boasts 18 athletes on the team.

After the rearrangement of some of the state sections in the area, the Saints are mixed into a new section class 2AA, with strong competition coming from the likes of Waseca, Jordan and Maple River. If the Saints come together as a team and learn to handle adversity early in the sea-son, this season could turn out to be a triumphant one with the amount of talent present.

St. Peter partners with Cleve-land High School, LeSueur-Hen-derson High School and Try-City United High School to form the LSHSPTCUC Bulldogs boys hockey team, members of the South Central conference. The Bulldogs are coached by David Swanberg, who looks to lead a team full of a good mix of upper and lower classmen.

“We return some quality for-wards that can put the puck in the net. There is some good speed up front. Our kids work hard and play very disciplined hockey. If we can protect our goaltender and find a way to score three or four goals a night, we should be competitive,” explained Swan-berg.

Returning letter winners include junior forward Sam Wenner, who led the Bulldogs with 23 goals and 45 points last season. Other major returnees include junior forward Brett Zallek and senior forward Ryan Hoehn, who each contributed 28 points in last winter’s campaign, and junior defenseman Sam Gerdts who tallied seven points last year.

There are still a couple of question marks for this year’s squad, such as who will replace longtime goaltender Chris Ams-den and how the defense will fare when only one defenseman with significant playing time on the varsity squad (Gerdts) is return-ing to the team. But Swanberg remained confident in his players and mentioned that he is looking forward to seeing who will step up to fill those roles.

The Saints also have a part-nership with two other high schools, Le-Sueur-Henderson and Tri-City United, to form the region’s girls hockey team. The girls are coached by Tom Blaido, who has a very young roster to work with, with over half of the roster made up of freshmen and eighth graders. The team’s sea-son is already in full swing with a 2-2-1 record.

The St. Peter wrestling squad this year is full of both veterans and inexperienced underclass-men, as the Saints gear up for

matchups against a tough South Central conference. Coached by Keith Hanson, the Saints will be relying on veteran leadership from the likes of seniors Collin Thompson, Cody Kurth, Steven Pettis, and Kyle Bosacker to be competitive and cheer each other on. The Saints’ first bout comes Dec. 10 against Maple River.

The St Peter girls gymnastics team is also just underway with

their season, having a small but steady and talented lineup of athletes including juniors Halla Dontje Lindell, Lexi Wilkens, Martha Stelter, and Rebekah Berry, freshman Keegan Kurth, eighth graders Teagan Weiss and Madalyn Rimstad, and sev-enth grader Kenna Zelenka. The gymnasts are coached by Stacy Kurth.

All West winter sports ready for action

With the winter sportd sea-son about to be in full swing, the Mankato West High School boys basketball program is gearing up for another run at a Big Nine title and section 2AAA championship after a successful campaign last season that saw them place third in the Big Nine conference. Af-ter coming off of a 16-10 record (12-6 in conference play) and only losing two seniors to gradu-ation, the Scarlets are ready to climb to the top of the Big Nine.

Some key returning starters that will be counted on to lift the team to new heights this season include sophomore forward Jake Dale, junior guard Carter Bur-meister, and senior guard Tyler Stoffel. The Scarlets also have many other players returning with experience and even more coming up from an impressive

junior varsity team that went 21-2 last year.

Head coach of the Scarlets, Thomas Boone, said that he will be looking for leaders to guide his team to victory this season.

“It is too soon to say who will fill that role, but with hard work and great defensive effort, we think we can have a very suc-cessful season,” said Boone.

For the Mankato West wres-tling squad, the time is now for new faces to step up to the wrestling mat and contribute. Four seniors graduated after last year’s wrestling campaign, four student-athletes who Head Coach Dustin Buttell said “pro-vided great leadership for us in

2012-2013 and will be missed.”Those seniors include Rusty

Hewitt, Xavier Dahlgren and Conor Wandersheid. Tyler Jakes also left the team after last sea-son due to graduation, after post-ing the all-time best win-loss record in Mankato West History with a mark of 174-59.

But Coach Buttell mentioned that the 2013-2014 season is in-deed a promising one for the Scarlets and that plenty of re-turning faces and newcomers make this winter an exciting one for the wrestling team.

“The 2013-2014 season is a great opportunity for new leaders to come forward and develop,” Buttell said.

Upperclassmen who will be counted on to lead the team in-cludes senior Jake Russell, who had a 20-14 record last winter as a junior. Other returnees in-clude junior Evan Jakes who was out with a knee injury all of

last season, junior Charlie Dun-das who went 27-10 last year, as well as juniors Russell Koenigs, Noah Lowe and Sam Schwartz. Up and comers that Buttell says will also be leaders on the team include sophomores Tyler Kopp, Jaeger Moser, and Garrett Block.

As far as the competition goes in the Big Nine conference, But-tell says that he and the Scarlets may have their work cut out for them even with a promising team.

“The Big Nine is a very tough conference and each Big 9 dual will require a full team effort to be competitive with such good teams,” said Buttell.

Buttell says that he is excited

to be a part of such a competi-tive 2AA state section, mention-ing that the 2AA section is one of the best wrestling sections in the state.

“Tournament time will be ex-citing as always,” said Buttell. The Scarlets kick off the season on Dec. 12 with a home dual against the Northfield Raiders and the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers.

The Mankato West boys hock-ey team is also gearing up for a full season of action, with head coach Curtis Doell at the helm. The Scarlets will be counting on several upperclassmen to lead this year’s squad and make the most of the high school hockey season before a large amount of its players graduate.

Upperclassmen on this year’s team include forwards Nick Campbell, Derek Frentz, Zach-ary Erickson, Galt Goettl, Isaac Weber, Cole Filler, Cain Grimm, Dylan Leivermann, Christian Klemme, and Austin Langwor-thy, defensemen Scott McKis-sick, Max Mettler, Joey Lange-meier, and Brennon Soucek, as well as goaltenders Jake Spiess and Conor Wollenzien.

One hockey season that is already in full swing belongs to the Mankato West girls team. The team already has five games under their belt with a record of 1-4. This year’s girls squad has an impressive mix of both veter-ans and newcomers, with seven seniors and three eighth graders on the roster.

The squad has seven seniors, including forwards Julia Snel-son, Bridget Yokiel, Breanna Black, and Callie Looft, defen-semen Elizabeth Sanford, and Katie Braun, and goaltender Maddie Zellmer. Newcomers to the squad include eighth grad-ers Courtney Bloemke, Shelby Lund, and Olivia Wiese. The Scarlets continue their winter campaign against Mankato East/Loyola on Tuesday, December 3rd. The girls team is guided by Head Coach Mike Sipe.

The Alpine Skiing program at Mankato West, which is a team that co-ops with Mankato East and Mankato Loyola High

Schools, is led by Head Coach Jon Anderson. This year’s team looks to compete at several re-gional invites and tournaments over the next few months, in-cluding the Wild Mountain and Powder Ridge Invites, the Big 9 Tournament at Welch Village Ski Area and the Section Tour-

nament at Buck Hill later in the season.

Mankato West student-athletes on the ski team in-clude seniors Isaac Mehlhaff, Jon Sachau, and Mike Vogel, sophomore Greta Schwickert,

Indians look to tomahawk through conference this winter with key athletes returning

The girls' basketball team will bring the height advantage to every arena in the Tomahawk conference in their 2013-2014 campaign.

FAIRMONT

Cardinal basketball leads the wayMost of the Fairmont winter teams are looking like up-and-com-

ing teams who are looking for a breakout season, but not head coach Jared Thompson and his boys’ basketball team.

With three all-conference players returning to the starting lineup, the Cardinals look to use their 23-6 season last year and win another South Central Conference championship and a section championship, according to Thompson.

While trying to accomplish this tough task, senior guard Mitch Pfingsten is creeping closer to Fair-mont’s career scoring title. The current third best scorer in school history is a three-time all-conference selection and a two-time honorable all-state mention. He was joined by senior guard Jay Ruen and senior forward Josh Eversman on the all-conference team with Eversman right behind him in the scoring column last season.

The Cardinals have started their 2013-2014 campaign red hot with four wins in four games with a win over Windom Area (79-65), Worthington (76-72), United South Central (67-63) and New Ulm (82-76).

The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls wrestling team competed in their second season last year as a cooped team and finished 9-9. First year head coach Adam Williamson saw great improvement as soon as he walked through the door at practice number one with more wrestlers participating.

“We are starting our season this year with about 40 kids on our roster. This is an increase of about 10 kids from last year's squad,” Williamson said. “We have multiple kids at each weight, which creates great competition in our practices. Wrestlers will definitely have to earn their spots this year more than ever before.”

Being a joined team gives them some unique opportunities, according to Williamson. As the team competes in both the Valley Conference and South Central Conference, they have a chance to compete for both conference championships as a team and individually.

Junior Elijah Gronewold took 25 matches last season and is expected to fill the 138-lb weight class. The Cardinals also bring back three state qualifiers and a placer in senior Joe Weber in the 152-lb weight class, senior Kory Brown at the 195-lb weight class and sophomore Luis Figueroa, who placed at state as a freshman and won 20 matches at the 220-lb weight class.

Theses returners and the increased number of wrestlers gave Williamson no reason to look forward to the postseason.

“I feel our team has a strong chance of making it to the section final four and of course our ultimate goal would be to move on to state,” Williamson said.

The squad begins their 2013-2014 campaign at New Ulm, who finished 6-21 last season. Looking on the calendar, the Red Bulls took notice of Worthington and Luverne on it. The Worthington Trojans, who went 10-11 last season, head to Fairmont on Jan. 23, while the Luverne Cardinals, 11-8 last season, come for a duel on Jan. 28.

This winter will comprise of some up-and-coming teams throughout Sleepy Eye Pub-lic High School, with multiple teams returning most of their key players and are excited about their development in their new players this offseason.

Head coach Kristin Faber and her girl’s hockey team, which is joined with New Ulm High School, New Ulm Cathedral High School and Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s, finished last sea-son with a 14-13-1 record. The Eagles loved playing at home with an 8-3 record at home but struggled on the road (5-8-1).

Faber has 15 of her 17 letter-winners coming back for more rink action, and they are ready to show their improvement to the South Central Conference.

“We have an experienced team that works well together. They are a tight knit group that plays for each other and has fun doing it,” Faber said. “This group is very eager to learn and improve.”

Sophomore Brook Schugel and Brittany Denn, senior Lexie Weiss and junior Erika Ries will

JOEY DENTONSports Editor

bring back some talent to the front line for the Eagles, while senior defensemen Kali Denn and Miranda McMullen return for one more to help senior goal-ie Julia Schaefer and sophomore goalie Bailer Landerville keep pucks out of the net.

The Eagles are off to a hot 6-0 start to their 2013-2014

campaign, outscoring their op-ponents 30-13. Even though their competition so far hasn’t proven them to be a contender for the conference title quite yet, Faber has pushed this squad in practice, and that is what they want.

“The girls have responded very well to some intense prac-tices, and I like the effort the girls are putting in day in and day out,” Faber said.

The girl’s basketball squad only graduated one senior from its 9-18 season a year ago and is returning all five starters and their key bench players for their 2013-2014 campaign.

Knowing that all of the team’s key players are returning will put a lot of hop into any team’s step, and the Indians are no different.

“We were a very young team last year but with the girls putting in a bunch of time this spring and summer playing AAU, par-ticipating in individual workouts and team workouts, along with attending several team camps, I feel we can compete with anyone on our schedule this upcoming year” head coach Ryan Hulke said.

One thing this squad isn’t

lacking is height. Four of its key players stand at 5-foot-8 or taller, including the two leading scor-ers Claire Krumbach and Justine Gonzalez. Krumbach, the only senior, is a two-time all-confer-ence selection and averaged 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks per game. Gonzalez, ju-nior, also put up 12 a night to go

with her three steals per game. The Indians also brought back

its tallest player back to the gym in Josie Schieffert. Standing at 6-foot-1, the sophomore put up 11 points and brought down nine rebounds a night and shot 51 per-cent from the field. Junior McK-ayla Ahlrich is the squad’s best spot up shooter and averaged seven points and six rebounds a game last season.

Hulke, a former Minnesota State University, Mankato bas-ketball player, enters his third season as head coach and is not

ing year,” head coach Ryan Hulke said.

only excited because of the tal-ent returning, but they demeanor they came with.

“The girls have set high goals from themselves this year and understand they will have to work for them each day and progress throughout the year,” Hulke said.

Head Coach Brian Polesky has been presented with the same situation. After going 10-16 last season, the squad did lose five se-niors, but they reloaded with four seniors who will all have a big part of the team’s success. Sleepy Eye Public has a two-time All-Conference selection in point guard Brandon Polesky, who was also their leader in points, assists and steals.

The Indians possess good defenders and quick athletes in senior guards Juan Montemayer and Spencer Weicherding, which is going to be key for this squad.

"We will plan on playing upt-empo this season as our strengh will be our guard play,” Polesky said. “We lack height but have a number of guys with decent quickness."

Sophomores Isaiah Krum-bach and Austin improved their post game and will be seeing more playing time at the varsity level.

Cyclones look to stir up Valley ConferenceSAINT CLAIR

Photo Courtesy of SPX PhotosAll three teams this winter, including wrestling, have every in place to do some damage in the Valley Conference.

Various expectations make for exciting seasons for three area winter sports teams.

The Cyclones wrestling pro-gram is one with high hopes. Expecting to build off of last season’s success, third-year head coach Brandon Greiner looks forward to seeing his team’s hard work show off on the mat.

“With five seniors on our team, the demeanor of the team is positive and hard-working with a ‘This is our year’ mental-ity,” Greiner said.

“Watching two of our athletes qualify for state last year from our small program has inspired many others on the team to work to get to that point.”

“We look to have a winning dual meet record and to qualify more than two wrestlers for the state tournament.”

Those expectations aren’t out of the question for the athletes headed to the mat.

“Senior Chance Oftedahl is a returning state entrant with 100 career wins. He is looking to im-prove on his 28-7 record from a year ago,” Greiner said.

“Senior Dylan Boettcher is a returning state entrant. He had a record of 18-10 last season.”

“Junior Gage Thom started to turn some heads last year with his fourth place section finish. Look for him to compete for a trip to state this year.”

Greiner expects the extra work his athletes put in at the wrestling and weight room to pay off.

“I like the tournaments we are scheduled to compete in this year. Most of them have 10-12 teams in them with little rep-etition of seeing the same teams

twice,” Greiner said. “Our duals consist of mostly tris and quads within the conference and sec-tion. We will dual almost every team in our section this year prior to the post-season so that should tell us where we are at as a team and individually.”

Greiner, who is in his fourth year with the program empha-sizes working hard and having fun to his athletes and says that’s always been his motto for any sport.

“We’ve put in the work and are now ready to show it on the mat,” Greiner said.

St. Clair’s boys basketball program is made of mainly all upperclassmen as well, with four seniors, nine juniors and one sophomore on their roster.

Third-year head coach Char-lie Freitag thinks the previous two seasons are enough to push his athletes to achieve their goals.

“We have been beat the last two seasons in the section quar-ter-finals by a combined four points. Our athletes are ready to move to the next level. Our demeanor has changed and our sites are not set for section play but are aimed beyond that,” Fre-itag said.

“We need to play to our po-tential and then beyond. That is the only expectation I have this season. If we can achieve this, it should be fun.”

The Cyclones not only have numbers but they have talent.

“Senior Ryan Kruse aver-aged 23 points and 11 rebounds for us last season. He is a guard/forward, and we look forward to him leading our team this sea-son. I also look for him to con-tinue his basketball career at the next level,” Freitag said.

“Brandon Goebel played a little varsity at the end of last sea-

son as a freshman and will play if not start this year at the varsity level.”

Freitag’s son, Brandon Fre-itag will also see some time on the varsity court this year when-ever the Cyclones are in need of a spark.

Coach Freitag prepares his team using speed and agility drills in the offseason. The Cy-clones also play in the Impact Summer League and in a couple team camps.

“We play 26 games in a sea-son and there is not one that is bigger than the other. Every team we play is trying to keep us from achieving our goal,” Freitag said.

“Our upcoming scheduled brutal. We play at home to open the year against a very good Springfield team who ended our season a year ago. We then go on the road until January 6. Within that road stint we travel to Blooming Prairie, Sherburn, Jackson, Granada Huntley East Chain and Randolph and then play at Bethany Lutheran Col-lege at the Pepsi Holiday Tourna-ment.”

Freitag and his players take team trips throughout the year to watch Minnesota State Uni-versity, Mankato Mavericks bas-ketball games as well as the Uni-versity of Minnesota, Gophers. They also watch the hyped-up televised games together as well.

“This year we will be work-ing with Cindra Kampoff and the MSU Center for Sport and Per-formance Psychology. I believe this will be a great addition to what we are trying to do here at St. Clair,” Freitag said.

Freitag has spent some time as a basketball coach. Now in his third year as head coach, Freitag was St. Clair’s assistant coach for a year, Alden Conger’s head

ADAM PIERSONStaff Writer

coach for a year and Bethany Lu-theran College’s assistant coach for five years.

“We strive to reach max po-tential and make every opportu-nity worthwhile. Life is full of things that try to keep you from achieving. Overcoming those ob-stacles is such a key asset to have in basketball and in life,” Freitag said.

As for St. Clair’s girls bas-ketball program, they look to develop young potential as they bounce forward.

Head coach Brian Noyes is in his 15th season as the coach for the girls’ team at St. Clair.

“We will be very young this year so our success will be deter-mined by how our youth devel-ops and mix in with the experi-ence that we do return,” Noyes said. “Our expectations are to get better every day in practice both individually and collectively as a team.”

“We have a very competitive group of kids who are working very hard and are determined to get better. I will be very sur-prised if they get outworked on the court this year. We certainly won’t have the experience or tal-ent level that some teams return, but it’s a good feeling as a coach to know they aren’t scared to compete and outwork others.”

The Cyclones look to their veteran seniors to lead the team this season.

“Senior Katelyn Weber is a

6-foot center and has started varsity for three years. Weber was our second leading scorer averaging 15 points per game last year. She is athletic and runs the floor really well in transition. Chloe Hanson is a 5-foot-9 senior and has also played on varsity the past three seasons and averaged nine points per game. Hanson is an athletic wing who does a nice job attacking the basket both in transition and in the half court.”

Noyes also mentioned to watch out for freshman Haley Embacher moving forward. Standing 5-foot-7, Embacher is “an extremely athletic wing,” who posted quality time on JV last season.

“She has worked really hard over the summer to improve her skills and has a chance to be a re-ally good player,” Noyes said.

Noyes hopes that spending two to three mornings a week in the summer lifting weights and working on basketball fun-damentals helps excel his young team this season.

“I think taking an early exit from the playoffs motivated our kids to work harder and be more dedicated to our off-season pro-gram,” Noyes said.

Noyes encourages his team to be great teammates and to play for each other.

One thing is for sure. The St. Clair athletics program has a lot to be proud of and to look for-ward to this winter.

St. Clair High School has both boys and girls basketball and wrestling during the winter season. All three look to move forward after successfull season a year ago.

Minnesota River Conference school looks for giant winter season

Boys Basketball

The Giants will be relying on seven returning letter winners to improve on their record from the 2012-13 season.

Second-year head coach Dan Marcusson is expecting a finish in the upper part of the confer-ence.

Luke Smith, Riley McGraw and Bradley Rose are among the key letter winners returning. Marcusson expects Watertown-Mayer, Mayer Lutheran and Jor-dan will be schools contending for the conference title.

Bradley Rose will be return-ing from a torn ACL he suffered in the 2012 football season.

Smith, the Mr.hustle award winner from a year ago, averaged 4.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

McGraw averaged 7.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks a year ago. McGraw is also the team’s tallest player at 6-feet-5.

Rose averaged 6.8 points per game, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

According to the LeSeuer News-Herald, coach Don Mar-cusson is excited for the team to continue to grow together.

“Our overall strength is go-ing to be our shooting ability and running the floor. Both of these areas we do well and should help us on the offensive side,” Mar-cusson said.

“Our lack of height may hurt us a little on the defensive side at times but we will adjust to off set this problem.”

“I think we will be much im-proved this year just from un-derstanding what we want to do on offense and defense this year. The guys played a lot of ball this summer together, and it looks like they have a much better grasp of the system now. We are putting things in at practice a lot faster as well.”

Girls Basketball

Coming off of a 1-24 season from a year ago, the LeSueur-Henderson girls’ basketball team will be looking to improve one game at a time under the direc-tion of new coach Ryan Graff.

Graff is returning to his alma mater and is excited, according to the St.Peter Herald.

The fourth-year head coach will be looking to change the cul-ture around the program.

“I want to get the girls to have fun and join basketball at a younger age,” Graff said. “I want to reach out to the younger grades and create more opportu-nities for them to participate in varsity games.”

With only a few juniors and seniors on the team, the Giants will still be relying on youth to lead the way.

Senior Captains Selena Wie-derich and Stephanie Winter’s main focus revolves around the daily struggle to get better, to improve.

“I mean that’s the biggest thing, I want to walk off each court and say we’re improving each game of the year.” Wied-erich said. “We just want to go out and have fun each game.”

“The wins aren’t really a big deal,” Winter said. “You always strive for a win, but last year we lost a lot of games compared to one win. As long as we keep im-proving time after time and pro-gressively get better. We’re going to go out there and have fun each game.”

Boys Hockey

As the LeSueur Henderson Boys hockey team, under the leadership of Head Coach David Swanberg, begins the 2013-2014 season, defense will be critical to have a successful season.

Key returning players for the Giants include Senior Captain Ryan Hoehn and juniors Sam Wenner and junior Sam Gerdts.

“He has played both forward and defense. Ryan is a very hard worker with quick feet and great instincts for the game,” Swan-berg said of Hoehn. “He is a two-time letterwinner and will be counted on to provide a great deal of leadership for this years team.”

On Wenner: “He is our lead-ing scorer from a year ago and has a real knack for finding the back of the net. Sam is a gifted offensive player who can also play a very physical style of hockey. Sam will be counted on to provide a great deal of offense for this year’s team.”

On Gerdts: “Sam is the only returning defenseman from a year ago. He is a strong physi-cal player who can also provide a great deal of offense for our team. Sam is a solid two-way defenseman. He will see a great deal of ice time throughout the season.”

Swanberg contends that the true concept of teamwork will be essential to having a successful team.

“Strength of the team will be accepting a true team philoso-phy,” Swanberg said.

“We are all going to have to be good at the little things to be successful. The work ethic and attitude will need to be good for us to be successful this year. Ulti-mately each player is in complete

control of these two things.”Big games for the Giants in-

clude Mankato East, Mankato West and New Ulm.

Swanberg is excited to come back to coach.

“This is my first year back as the head boys hockey coach after 10 years.

I'm excited for the oppor-tunity and believe that there is enough talent on this squad for us to be successful.”

Girls Hockey

Coming off of a 6-19 cam-paign from a year ago, the St.Peter/LeSueur /Tri-City Unit-ed/Cleveland Lady Bulldogs will be looking towards 14 returning letterwinners to help right the ship.

Key returning players include Chloe Bachman, a two-year team captain. Bachman was an all-conference selection from last year, as well as the team’s lead-ing scorer and team MVP.

Senior Goalie Veronica Sinell, a four-year letterwinner, will be back behind the net for the Pio-neers. Sinell compiled more than 1,000 saves a year ago, and is a team captain.

Senior Chelsea Kaelberer will also provide experience. A two-year starter, Kaelberer was an all-conference honorable men-tion a year ago, and will also serve as captain.

Photo Courtesy of Le Sueur News-Herald The boys' hockey squad are 2-2 as of Dec. 3 to start their 2013-2014 cam-paign.

According to a season pre-view conducted by the St.Peter Herald, “Junior wing Bailey Wilmes, two-year starter- sopho-more center Maddie Kelschult

and wing Holly Gibbs; freshman wings Anna Amos, Taylor Witte and Kallie Steuck; 8th-grade wing Emma Doherty-Bohn should all add scoring punch,

freshmen Dana Bohks, Lau-ren Colway, and Tyler Defor, eighth graders Jaiden Rollings, Briggs Carlson, and Shanalyn Just, and seventh grader Kayla Lorentz.

Another team from Manka-to West that has been dominant in past years and achieved lofty heights again year is the girls swimming and diving team, coached by Dave Burgess. Last year, the team finished fourth in the State meet and the team carried that success into this season. After sweeping their regular season matchups to a record of 9-0 for the best record in the Big Nine confer-ence, the girls placed third at the Big Nine conference meet in October. The team is led by a mix of veteran and newcomer student-athletes who are excel-lent contributors on the team and in their individual races.

WEST “The Big Nine is a very tough conference and each Big 9 dual will require a full team effort to be competitive with such good teams,” said Buttell. continued from 20

while returning defense letter winners freshman Maggie Ringler and Francesca LoFaro should help to anchor the defense with the help of newcomers Kendall Wenner and Zoe Haugen,” Blaido said.

We have plenty of challenges because of our youth; unfortunately we are forced to put underclassmen into positions before they are ready forcing them to grow into their positions faster than we would ideally like,” Head Coach Tom Blaido said.

“One of the positives with all our youth is we are able to install a more complex offense; while they may not catch on to quickly to start with, they will have more time to learn and identify the cycles, rotations and gaps which should make them a formidable opponent for years to come,” Blaido said.

The 2013-2014 LeSueur Henderson wrestling team will be looking to continue their individual suc-cess on the mat, as well as improving their team record to be over the .500 mark under head coach Mark Wilson.

“Junior Austin Anderly was a state champion at 106 pounds last season. He has continued to work on his game with off-season competition. Although he’s likely going to be heavier this year, he will continue to be a force on the mat with his individual goal being a returning state champion," Wilson said.

“The upper weights (Clayton Colling, Conner Boettcher and Joe Abrahamson) are returning letter win-ners with a lot of mat experience. With this experience we are hoping that they can put together a strong top of the line-up. Colling is a team captain (along with Anderly) and the team knows that leadership will thrive from the two of them.

“We want to improve on our record from last year,” coach Wilson said. “We’d like to have a .500 re-cord. Considering the tough competition on our schedule this is a challenge, but our team is developing and therefore the goal is realistic. Two-thirds of our team are freshman and they have big roles to fill in their weight-classes.

“We want to return as a gold academic recipient. This means our overall team GPA must be higher than 3.5. Last year we were silver winners so we’d like to do a bit better.

“The key for us to winning matches and developing a quality team is continuing to house two-a-day practices. We weight-lift in the morning and train with technique in the afternoon. Most of our team wrestled in the off-season with our freestyle program. The combination of the above should be a recipe for us to compete at a high level.”

Wilson contends that the freshman class has a lot of potential. “The freshman class is eager and hungry to win. They have a sense of team spirit about them. They’re athletes and do not like to lose.”

Wilson knows of LSH’s premier status amongst wrestling programs. “We have taken 29 kids to the state tournament in the last six years and placed 22 of them. Of those 22 kids, six have been state cham-pions (six in six years is showing results, not even the power house schools in our class have done this).

Wilson also is a firm believer in his coaching staff, a staff that is made up of former college wrestlers. All conference matches will be big for the Giants “All conference matches are big for us,” Wilson said.

“Scott West in particular. St. Peter match (our alumni event) is a rivalry. The two-day Redwood Valley tournament before Christmas is also a highlight.”

year ago. After losing their top scorer from last season, junior Olivia McIntosh will be looked to for offensive production. McIntosh recorded 15 goals and 28 points, one more than sophomore Maddy Knoll who finished with 14 goals and 27 points. These two are essential players to the Waseca lineup. Sophomore goaltender Maddie Helms returns after going 4-1 last season while recording a shutout and should log the ma-jority of minutes between the pipes this winter.

Like the boy’s team, New Ulm is a big rival and a very competitive team in the SCC conference. The Bluejays should contend for a top spot in the conference and be in the mix for the section as well.

WASECA “Kids who were role players last year will need to con-tribute this year,” Conway said.continued from 14
