    Introduction

The future of Sunday school + family ministry is NOW.

N o doubt about it, the world is changing. Families used to go to church every week. Kids used to have longer attention spans. Teachers used to have more time to prepare. And didn’t our budgets used to be bigger?

Even the Sunday school Bible curriculum you used just a couple of years ago is already out of date. But there’s one thing that’s never changed: the need to grow families closer to Jesus.

That’s why we created FaithWeaver NOWTM, and it’s different from anything you’ve ever seen before!

It’s simpler and easier. Sometimes change is a wonderful thing. Gone are the days when you needed to spend hours preparing your lessons and hunting for supplies. FaithWeaver NOW will have you and your team ready to go in a snap.

It’s made for NOW. Life is complicated and full of distractions. FaithWeaver NOW keeps faith on track through even the most frenzied lifestyles.

What makes FaithWeaver NOW the perfect curriculum for TODAY’s church?

Children this age can understand that Jesus does great things. They can understand that Jesus is wonderful, awesome, and cool! Helping children this age understand how great Jesus is builds a foundation for them to worship him.

    BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS

Solomon Tells of Jesus’ ComingPsalm 72:1-19

    Writing Psalm 72

Some believe that Psalm 72 was written about Solomon and not by him. It is true that some elements of the psalm could well describe Solomon, but many elements describe a king whose actions go far beyond Solomon’s capabilities. The early church believed that this psalm was written as a prayer for a king to come in the line of David and Solomon: the Messiah, Jesus. That’s the approach taken in today’s lesson.

    The Psalmist Points Beyond Himself

Some elements of the psalm could indeed describe Solomon. He judged righteously and with great wisdom, as illustrated in the story of the two women who each claimed to be the mother of the same infant (1 Kings 3:16-28). He reigned over a prosperous kingdom, the wealthiest in Israel’s history. He expanded the boundaries of the kingdom to encompass more territory than ever before. And he was sought by the queen of Sheba, who came to him bearing gifts.

However, much of this psalm points directly to the Messiah. Only Jesus’ kingdom will truly extend to the ends of the earth (Psalm 72:8), and only to Jesus will all rulers eventually bow down (Psalm 72:11). There isn’t a lot of biblical evidence that Solomon cared for the needy and afflicted (Psalm 72:12-14), but Jesus’ life and ministry were characterized by such caring. And while the statement that all nations would be blessed through him (Psalm 72:17) could possibly refer to Solomon indirectly, it definitely refers to Jesus.

    The Works of the Messiah

If Jesus is indeed the subject of Psalm 72, it is easy to answer the question: What does Jesus do? Jesus does amazing things for us! He takes care of the needy and their children, and he defeats oppressors (Psalm 72:4, 12-14). He lives forever, despite the fact that he died on the cross for us (Psalm 72:5). When he returns, Jesus will reign over the entire earth (Psalm 72:8). Surely he deserves from us the same kind of praise and honor given in verses 18 and 19!

    The Jesus Connection

We’ve learned about many different facets of Jesus’ life and ministry on earth. But let’s never forget what Jesus has done for us. He is worthy of all our praise for that alone.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Jesus?

Who is Jesus to you? A teacher…a minister…a preacher…a martyr…a savior? Concentrate on the last one—savior. Spend two minutes prayerfully considering how Jesus is your Savior. You can write your prayer here.

    GETTING STARTED

    Welcoming Song

Tip Consistently use the same signal to announce a transition to the next activity. You could flip the lights off and on, use a train whistle, have a puppet rustling inside a bag, or sing cleanup songs. Keep it simple, consistent, and fun.

What You’ll DoAs children arrive, greet each one with a smile. When it’s time to begin, use your signal to bring the children together in a circle.

Choose two children to form a “church door.” Have them stand side by side and join hands, raising their arms to form an arch for kids to walk under. Lead kids in singing “In Your House” (track 7 on the CD) to the tune of “Standing in the Need of Prayer.” Fill in children’s names where indicated, and have kids walk through the “church door” as their names are called. Children will then stand beside the “arch” kids and join hands, forming a line. The next kids will go through the arch and join hands at each end of the line. Re-cue the CD as necessary.

We’re here, we’re here, we’re here, O Lord.Right here in your house today. We’re here, we’re here, we’re here, O Lord.Right here in your house today.

Here’s my brother, here’s my sister, And [child’s name], O Lord.Right here in your house today. Here’s my brother, here’s my sister, And [child’s name], O Lord.Right here in your house today.

    (Repeat from the beginning 3x.)

Open your Bible to John 3:16, and show children the words. Say: Today we’re going to learn lots of things from the Bible. In fact, the next song we’ll sing is right from the Bible.

Lead children in singing “God So Loved the World” (John 3:16) (track 4 on the CD). Have children follow the motions in parentheses.

I believe in God: (touch forehead)’Cause what he says is true.

Say: Our Key Verse from the Bible says, “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ ” That means Jesus is the only way to God. Let’s say our Key Verse together. Lead the children in saying the simplified Key Verse with you: Jesus is the way to God (John 14:6).

Say: God loves everyone in the world. God sent Jesus to save us. JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS, and everyone who believes in him can go to God. We can talk with God and pray to God anytime we want. Let’s play a game to help us understand our Key Verse.

Toss the inflatable globe to a child in the circle. Ask the child to find a country on the globe where there are people Jesus died for. Help the child identify the country, and have him or her say, “Jesus is the way to God for people in [name of country].” Then have the child pass the ball to another child who does the same thing. Continue until all the children have had a turn.

After the game, say: God sent Jesus to save us from our sins. Jesus is the only way to God; Jesus helps us go to God. JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS.

    3 BIBLE EXPLORATION

    Theo’s News

What You’ll DoSay: Friends, it’s time for Theo’s News! Have the children sit in a circle, and begin “Here, Theo” (track 2 on the CD). When the CD segment ends, bring out the Surprise Box, and put Theophilus the FaithRetriever puppet on your hand. Then follow along with the script.

Theo: Hi, everybody!Teacher: Hello, Theo! Tell us what interesting news you’ve dug up about the Bible today.Theo: I hid it in the Surprise Box.Teacher: Let’s look inside to see what Theo dug up for us today.(Choose a child to open the Surprise Box, and have the kids pass the deflated balloon around the circle so everyone can see it up close. Give the children time to guess what they might learn from the Bible today.)Teacher: Theo, why did you hide this balloon in the Surprise Box?Theo: If you blow it up, you can see a face.(Inflate the balloon, tie the end, and show the face to the children.)Teacher: Theo, why did you draw a face with such a big mouth on this balloon?Theo: It’s a balloon puppet of King Solomon. His mouth is really big because he’s ready to tell us that JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS.Teacher: Let’s learn what Solomon said.Theo: Have fun, boys and girls!Teacher: Say goodbye to Theo.

Encourage the children to wave or say goodbye to Theo. Then put Theo away in a safe place for next week’s use.

    Bible Time: Solomon Says

What You’ll DoOpen your Bible to Psalm 72, and show children the words.

Say: The Bible tells us that JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS. King Solomon tells about all the great things that Jesus will do when he comes. As we listen to the CD, Solomon will have some things for us to do.

Start the CD and play “Solomon Says” (track 9 on the CD). Let the children take turns holding the balloon and wiggling it back and forth as if the balloon is King Solomon talking throughout the segments. Pause the CD as directed, and let kids form pairs and do as Solomon says.

Here are the words to the song children will sing during the CD segment:

God sent his Son to save the worldAnd Jesus is his name-o.J-E-S-U-S,J-E-S-U-S,J-E-S-U-S,Jesus does great things—yeah!

Talk With KidsAsk the following questions. Gently hit the King Solomon balloon to kids who’d like to answer.

Ask: n What are some of the great things about Jesus that Solomon talked about? n What great things has Jesus done for you?

Say: Solomon told us about the great things that Jesus would do. And we can remember that JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS now and always.

    4 WEAVING FAITH INTO LIFE

Choose at least two of the learning centers to help reinforce today’s Bible lesson. Gather the needed materials, and put the supplies in an out-of-sight area until you’re ready for them. Allow the children to choose which center they’d like to explore first. Then circulate among the children as they create and explore. Encourage them to make connections between their activities and the Bible by asking them the questions included with each center’s description.

Have kids add coats to the needy children by gluing the fabric pieces onto the page. Then let kids cut along the lines on the page and fold Jesus’ arms over the children to comfort them with a hug.

Talk With KidsLead children in the following discussion.

Ask: n What else do children need beside warm coats? n What can we do to show Jesus’ love to children who may be cold or

    hungry?

Say: King Solomon told us that JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS. Jesus uses us to help others, too. We can help others by giving clothes to people who are cold and food to those who are hungry.

    CENTER 2:

    Wrapped in Jesus’ Love

What You’ll DoHave kids clean their hands. Have kids work in pairs to make a snack that’ll remind them that Jesus wraps us up in his love! Have them follow these steps: n Lay a half-tortilla flat on a napkin and place lunchmeat on top of it. n Help each other roll the lunchmeat inside each tortilla. n Stick a toothpick through the snack to keep the tortilla rolled up.

When all the snacks are done, invite a child to pray, and then let kids eat and enjoy the snacks.

Say: Wow! Wrapping your lunchmeat in the tortilla is like wrapping a cold child inside a warm blanket. Jesus wraps each one of us in his warm love. That’s one big way that JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS!

    Let’s Celebrate!

What You’ll DoSay: God told Solomon that Jesus would come and that he would do great things. Let’s make noisemakers to celebrate that JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS!

Gather your children in the craft area and give each child a paper towel tube with duct tape closing one end. Have children follow these steps: n Use the decorating supplies to decorate and personalize the paper towel tube. n Fill the tube with small jingle bells. n Close the tube by covering the open end with another piece of duct tape.

When all the kids have finished, play “God So Loved the World” (John 3:16) (track 4 on the CD). (The words are given earlier in this lesson.) Encourage kids to move and shake their noisemakers to the music.

What You’ll DoAfter the children have cleaned up their centers, bring everyone back to a circle area on the floor. Review the lesson activities and the Bible Point, and then encourage the children to share what they remember about what they learned from the Bible today.

Also use this time to challenge kids in their faith. Encourage them to choose a Daily Challenge for applying today’s lesson to their lives this week. Use this challenge for encouraging your children’s growing relationships with Jesus.

Talk With KidsSay: Today we learned that JESUS DOES GREAT THINGS. I’d like each of you to choose a way you can learn more about how Jesus does great things.

Read these three ideas for children to choose from: n Tell a friend about one of the great things Jesus does that you heard about

from the Bible today. n Ask your mom or dad or another adult to read from the Bible about a great

thing Jesus has done. n Make a card for Jesus and thank him for a wonderful thing that he has

    done in your life.

Have kids each whisper in your ear or tell you which idea they’ve chosen, and then circle it on each child’s My Bible Playground page. Make sure you choose a challenge as well and tell kids which challenge you chose. Your commitment will inspire children and will give them an opportunity to see God at work in your life as well as in theirs!

F ive- and six-year-olds know what it means to trust others. But children at this age also desire more independence. This can be a pivotal time for them to learn the importance of trust. As children learn about Joseph and how he learned that God is good, you can remind kids how important it also is for us to remember that God is good. Thank you for helping kids understand that God is good and his plans are the best for them!

    BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS

An Angel Appears to JosephIsaiah 7:13-14; Matthew 1:18-25

    Ancient Engagement

A Jewish pledge of marriage was a much more serious commitment than an engagement is today. It actually involved vows before witnesses, much as a wedding ceremony does today. When the bride and groom pledged themselves to be married, they were considered husband and wife. The difference between a modern marriage and an ancient Hebrew one is that in the latter a period of time elapsed between the betrothal ceremony and the wife’s transition into her husband’s home. It was during this interval between the exchange of vows and their consummation that Mary became pregnant. Since there had been no sexual relationship between Mary and Joseph, he knew that the child she carried was not his.

    Joseph’s Dilemma

Joseph faced a dilemma. No doubt he had looked forward to life with Mary. But because he was a right-eous Jew, it was unthinkable for him to complete a marriage to someone who had been unfaithful to him. He demonstrated his deep love for Mary by his intention to end the marriage quietly. He could have charged her with adultery, making a public example of her and allowing the law to deal with her. Jewish law would have required that she be stoned to death (see Deuteronomy 22:23-24).

    God Intervenes

Joseph chose the most compassionate route for ending the marriage, but before he could take action, God sent a messenger to him. The angel addressed Joseph as “son of David” (Matthew 1:20), a reminder that the Messiah was to come through David, just as Matthew pointed out in his genealogy. The angel’s announcement harmonizes with the one given to Mary in Luke 1:35: The child would be special indeed!

The name Jesus is a form of Joshua and means “the Lord saves.”

    A Plan Fulfilled

Matthew points out that the manner of Jesus’ conception “took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet” (Matthew 1:22). Matthew’s Gospel, written primarily to Jews, was intended to show that Jesus was indeed the Messiah promised by the prophets. No doubt Matthew felt that describing the miraculous virgin birth could help to convince skeptics that Jesus was the Messiah promised in Isaiah 7:14. Matthew also demonstrated that Joseph was intended to be Jesus’ earthly father by beginning his account with a careful delineation of Jesus’ lineage.

Knowing that this was God’s plan, Joseph’s dilemma was gone. He could complete his marriage to Mary, and he didn’t hesitate to do so. And when Mary’s son was born, they named him Jesus, for he would save us from our sins.

    The Jesus Connection

Jesus encouraged his followers to trust God because he knew God would take care of them—just as God took care of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. Jesus’ life can be an encouragement for us to trust God.

God’s purposes for us are beautiful. Maybe something in his plans doesn’t make sense to you right now. Ask for help, and God will show you in time just how perfect his plans for you are. Don’t be afraid; he will never let you down. You can always count on God. You can write a prayer about God’s plan here.

What You’ll Do As children arrive, greet each one with a smile.

    (Repeat from the beginning 3x.)

Say: What beautiful singing! Singing is a wonderful way to worship God. God wants everyone throughout the whole world to worship him and trust his plans for their lives. Let’s continue to worship God while we sing another song.

Lead children in singing “Sing Unto the Lord” (track 5 on the CD). Encourage children to march around the room. When they sing the word “sing,” have them cup their hands over their mouths. When they sing the word Lord, have them raise their hands high.

What You’ll Do Have kids form two groups. Divide each group in half and have them line up single file facing each other at opposite ends of the room. Whisper a secret angel message such as “Jesus is the Savior” to the first child in each line on one end of the room.

At your cue, each child with the message will walk quickly to his or her group at the opposite end of the room, whisper the secret message to the first child in line, and then go to the back of that line. That child will then go to his or her group across the room and whisper the message to the next child. Encourage the kids to continue to relay the angel message from one end of the room to the other until all the children have heard the message.

When the last group member hears the message, have everyone sit on the floor. When both groups have completed the relay, have kids shout the angel message aloud. Repeat the game as time permits, using a different secret message.

    Lesson 3 Pre-K & K/Ages 5 & 6 Winter Quarter

    BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS

Jesus Is BornLuke 2:1-20; Hebrews 1:1-4

    Toward Bethlehem

These two passages describe the incarnation of Christ in different ways. Luke presents the concrete historical facts, while the writer of Hebrews explains how the appearance of Jesus fits into the big picture of God’s working in and through human history.

Luke 2:1-20 describes Joseph and Mary’s continuing hardships. Near the end of Mary’s pregnancy, she and Joseph had to travel 70 miles from Nazareth to his ancestral home of Bethlehem—probably on foot.

    The Savior Is Born

The exact date of Jesus’ birth is impossible to calculate. Based on historical evidence regarding the reign of Herod the Great (as mentioned in Matthew 2) and the census, most Biblical scholars set Jesus’ birth somewhere between 6 to 4 B.C. Unfortunately, the date of Jesus’ birth was miscalculated when the Christian calendar was created. Birth Announcement

It is significant that Jesus’ birth was announced first to shepherds. In those days shepherds were not highly regarded. They were considered so unreliable that their testimony was not accepted in the courts, and they were deemed unclean by the orthodox religious establishment. The fact that Jesus’ birth was announced first to them indicates that Jesus came to earth for those in need of a Savior. It also fore-shadows the common people’s acceptance of Christ and the religious leaders’ rejection of him. The Messiah Revealed

The significance of Jesus’ coming is described in Hebrews 1:1-4. Prior to Jesus’ incarnation, God

spoke through the Old Testament writers. Their writings pointed to the advent of the Messiah. With the coming of Jesus, a new era was ushered in as God revealed himself in a new way. In the past he had spoken through faithful people. Now he would speak through the life, actions, and words of his own Son.

Jesus is the very Son of God, not just a servant. He is the Creator of our universe. He shows us the radiance of God’s glory. He is God himself! He continues to hold together all that exists. He brought salvation for us through his death on the cross. And he is now sitting in heaven with God! Jesus is the living Word of God, who came to show us who God is and to make it possible for us to live in relationship with God himself. Even the angels, as exalted as they were in Jewish culture, were a far distant second to God’s supreme revelation of himself in Jesus!

    The Jesus Connection

Jesus was and always will be the best Christmas gift ever! Share the truth of Jesus with someone else to-day. Jesus is the gift that keeps on giving!

Reread Hebrews 1:1-4 as a way to celebrate the truth of Christmas. Regardless of your thoughts about Christmas, when you make Jesus the focus, it becomes the best holiday ever. Jesus can fill any void you may feel at this time of year. Make Hebrews 1:1-4 into a prayer for your Christmas. You can write your prayer here.

Say: Our Key Verse from the Bible says, “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ ” This Scripture means that Jesus is the way to God.

Let’s say that together. Lead the children in saying the simplified Key Verse with you: Jesus is the way to God (John 14:6).

Ask: n What do you think it means that Jesus is the way to God?

Say: We know how to live our lives because of Jesus. We can pray, sing, and tell others about how much God loves us. Because Jesus came to earth, died for our sins, and came back to life again, we can live forever with God. Hold up the baby Jesus figure. Let’s play a game to help us remember that Jesus is the way to God.

Ask one child to hold the Jesus figure, and have the other kids line up behind him or her. Have the child lead the others in marching around the room as everyone sings the following song. After a verse or two, let the next child in line hold the Jesus figure and be the leader. Encourage the leader to choose a new action, such as hopping or skipping. Re-cue the CD as necessary so all the children will have a chance to lead the others. Sing “Jesus Is the Way to God” (track 13 on the CD) to the tune of “The Mulberry Bush.”

Jesus is the way to God,Way to God, way to God.Jesus is the way to God,So let’s all follow Jesus.(Repeat 5x.)

After all the children have had a chance to lead the others, stop the CD, and tell the children to gather in a circle. Hold up the figure of baby Jesus.

Say: JESUS WAS BORN. He came down from heaven to live with us and help us follow God. We can follow Jesus.

Encourage the children to wave or say goodbye to Theo. Then put Theo away in a safe place for next week’s use.

    Bible Time: Match It

What You’ll Do Give children the My Bible Playground pages, and have kids write their names on their papers. Hand out safety scissors, and instruct the children to cut carefully along the lines between the six pictures. Have kids lay the pictures in front of them so they can see each one.

Say: Each time I say something that matches a picture in front of you, hold up the picture and show everyone. We’ll learn that JESUS WAS BORN.

Open your Bible to Luke 2, and show children the words.

Say: A long time ago there lived two people named Joseph and Mary. Encourage children to hold up their pictures of Mary and Joseph, and then have the kids put the pictures down.

The men who ruled in those days wanted to count all of the people. So Mary and Joseph had to travel to the town of Bethlehem to be counted as members of their family. Have the children hold up their pictures of Bethlehem and then lower the pictures. Mary was going to have a baby, and both Mary and Joseph wished they didn’t have to travel so far.

Bethlehem was a busy place. There were so many people arriving in Bethlehem that there were no rooms left where Mary and Joseph could sleep. Mary and Joseph finally found a place to stay—in a barn where some animals lived! And that’s where baby Jesus was born. Let children hold up their pictures of baby Jesus and then lower the pictures.

Mary wrapped her baby in some cloths to keep him warm. She probably rocked him to sleep like most mommies do. Take your picture of baby Jesus and rock him gently. Now keep holding the baby, and find your picture of a manger. The manger was a place that held the food for the animals to eat. Wait for children to find the pictures of the manger.

Mary used the manger as a bed for Jesus. Go ahead and lay Jesus in the manger. Have kids place the baby Jesus pictures on the manger pictures.

In some fields nearby, there were shepherds watching over their sheep to protect them. Encourage children to hold up their pictures of shepherds for a moment. It was nighttime, and it was dark. Suddenly the sky became as bright as day. There was a group of angels in the sky singing and praising God. Wait for children to hold up their angel pictures; then have kids lower them. The shepherds were afraid when they first saw the angels. Show me how you think the shepherds looked. Pause for kids to look scared.

One of the angels said, “Don’t be afraid; I have good news for you. A baby named Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem.” Have children hold up the pictures of baby Jesus. So the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus, and the shepherds told everyone about Jesus. JESUS WAS BORN!

Set out the “Jesus Is Born” poster, and have the kids gather around it.

Say: Look, once all the people had arrived for Jesus’ birth, the barn was very full! Point to the poster and all of the different people and animals around the baby Jesus.

Talk With Kids Lead children in the following discussion.

Ask: n What was your favorite part of Jesus’ birth? n What are you most excited about when you think about Christmas, Jesus’

    birthday?

Say: Even though we weren’t at his birth, we know that JESUS WAS BORN. Let’s draw ourselves on this picture to show that we can celebrate Jesus’ birthday just as all these people celebrated his birthday so long ago. Give the children crayons or markers and encourage them to draw themselves on the poster.

Give each child an envelope to put his or her pictures in. Have each child write his or her name on the envelope, and then collect the envelopes. Set the envelopes aside for the closing prayer. Use two of these envelopes in the “Christmas Clues” activity if you choose to do that center.

What You’ll Do Paper clip index cards to the backs of the pictures from the two envelopes, and place the pictures on the floor, face down. Have one child draw a picture and show it to the other kids. Then have that child choose a partner to try to find the picture that matches. If there’s no match, another child will have a turn to try to find a match. After each match, have kids tell about that part of Jesus’ birth and then put the matching pictures to the side. Continue play until all matches are made.

Talk With Kids Lead children in the following discussion.

Ask: n How did you help each other during this game? n How does Jesus help us today?

Say: You helped each other find things that told about how JESUS WAS BORN. Then you helped each other tell what happened. Jesus was born to help us know about God’s love and forgiveness. And we can tell others about Jesus! Return the sets of pictures to their envelopes.

    CENTER 2:

What You’ll Do After the children have cleaned up their centers, bring everyone back to a circle area on the floor.

Talk With Kids Say: Today we learned that JESUS WAS BORN. I would like each of you to choose a way to celebrate Jesus’ birth.

Read the three ideas for children to choose from: n For Christmas, give a “helping gift” by clearing the table after dinner. n Sing “Silent Night” with your family. n Help your mom or dad wrap presents. Remind your mom or dad that Jesus

is God’s special gift for all of us.

W hen 5- and 6-year-olds worship in church, they see a variety of people worshipping with them. Tall people, short people, men, women, boys, and girls—everyone is worshipping Jesus. Since the wise men in today’s lesson represent the non-Jewish parts of the world, their coming to worship Jesus foretells the spread of the gospel to the entire world. Thank you for helping kids see that no matter who we are, what we look like, or where we live, we all can worship Jesus!

    BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS

    Foreign Visitors Worship JesusMatthew 2:1-12

    About the Magi

Contrary to traditional images of the events surrounding Jesus’ birth, the Magi likely did not visit Jesus shortly after his birth, but actually arrived months later and visited Jesus at the house where he and his parents were staying. Common sense tells us that Mary and Joseph could not have traveled the 70 miles back to Nazareth immediately after Jesus’ birth, so they likely stayed in Bethlehem for a few months.

Also contrary to tradition, the Magi were probably philosophers or astrologers from Babylon, not kings. Apparently it was widely thought that a great king who would usher in a period of peace would soon be born in Judea. When the Magi saw the unusual star, their curiosity got the best of them, and they set out for Jerusalem, the Judean capital, to see if the star actually signaled the birth of this great king. Herod’s Response

When the Magi’s report reached King Herod, he was disturbed at the prospect of a rival to his throne and immediately devised a plan to get rid of the child. He planned to use the Magi to gather information for him. So when his advisers told him of the prophecy placing the birth of the Messiah in Bethlehem, he passed that information on to the Magi and requested that they report their findings to him. In this way he would be able to find the child and deal with him. True Worshippers

The Magi followed the star to Bethlehem, where their predictions were confirmed. Indeed a miraculous birth had taken place, and the Magi worshipped the new king joyfully and presented him with precious gifts. Throughout history, different symbolic meanings have been attributed to the Magi’s gifts. One theory suggests that the gold represented Jesus’ kingly

nature, the incense his divinity, and the myrrh (a resin often used in burial) his humanity or mortality.

God had revealed to these non-Jewish seekers of truth the one who would bring peace and salvation to all who believe in him. It is clear from their response to God’s warning that they were more concerned about doing what was right before God than about obeying Herod, who could have had them executed for defying him. Matthew’s report of this story demonstrated to the Jews of his day—as well as to non-Jews today—that Jesus came for all people who place their trust in him.

    The Jesus Connection

No matter where we are in life, we can worship Jesus. Thank Jesus for his grace, for accepting our worship despite our many sins.

Consider this: What do you think of the way you worship Jesus? We can worship anywhere, any way, anytime we want. What are some areas of your life that need more worship? Talk to God about how you want to worship to show your love and devotion for him.

What You’ll Do As children arrive, greet each one with a smile. When it’s time to begin, use your signal to bring the children together in a circle.

Choose two children to form a “church door.” Have them stand side by side and join hands, raising their arms to form an arch for kids to walk under. Lead kids in singing “In Your House” (track 7 on the CD) to the tune of “Standing in the Need of Prayer.” Fill in names where indicated, and have kids walk through the “church door” as their names are called.

Say: The next song we’ll sing is called “Let Your Light Shine.” What do you think it means to “let your light shine”?

Say: Letting your light shine means praising God, doing good things, being kind, and telling people about Jesus. When you let your light shine, you help others know about Jesus, just like the star in the Bible let some important people know about Jesus.

Play “Let Your Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16) (track 6 on the CD). Every time kids sing the word light, encourage them to shake another person’s hand. You could also flash the room lights off and on when the word light is sung.
