Winter 2011 Greetings Horizons Friends! The summer of 2010 may have been my first summer as Director of Horizons, but it was also my 12 th summer on the Horizons staff. One of the joys of being at Horizons for so long has been to watch campers (and counselors) grow and blossom over the years. It is exciting to watch a formerly shy, unsure Chipmunk change into a confident, capable Falcon. This summer down at the waterfront I saw campers expertly diving off the floating dock who, when they first came to camp several years ago, were unable to swim or were afraid to go in the lake. The Horizons show at the end of each session is a chance for the youngest campers to try their first experience acting and singing in the chorus on stage with older campers who, over the years, have gained the confidence to take a lead and sing a solo. I have even been at Horizons long enough to watch others grow through the progression of camper, apprentice, assistant counselor, lead counselor, and even department head. It is a pleasure to see them share their experience, enthusiasm, and love for Horizons with younger campers and staff while taking on new responsibilities and leadership roles. Over the years at Horizons, friendships also flourish between kids from different towns and states (and even countries!) in special ways that are different from the friendships formed at school. Paddling a canoe together, supporting each other on the ropes course, decorating a shared cabin, practicing a skit to perform at assembly, or sharing a tent on an overnight all work to create long- lasting bonds between friends. On the first day of each session I love watching friends who haven’t seen each other all year greet each other with hugs and step right into where their friendship left off last summer. So how will you grow at Horizons this summer? Will you go on your first overnight, work to earn your Gold Bow, or make a new friend? How about teaching your group a new game, performing at assembly, or trying a new sport for choice? The possibilities are endless! I can’t wait to get back to the sunny shores of Lake Fairlee to see old friends, welcome new friends, and watch us all grow! Until then, Aloha! Winter 2011

Greetings Horizons Friends!

The summer of 2010 may have been my first summer as Director of Horizons, but it was also my 12th summer on the Horizons staff.

It is a pleasure to see them

share their experience, enthusiasm, and love for Horizons with younger campers and staff while taking on new responsibilities and leadership roles.Over the years at Horizons, friendships also flourish between kids from different towns and states (and even countries!) in special ways that are different from the friendships formed at school. Paddling a canoe together, supporting each other on the ropes course, decorating a shared cabin, practicing a skit to perform at assembly, or sharing a tent on an overnight all work to create long-

lasting bonds between friends.

The possibilities are endless!I can’t wait to get back to the sunny shores of Lake Fairlee to see old friends, welcome new friends, and watch us all grow! Until then,Aloha!

Kelsey Schiltkamp is busy with school and ice skating. And just finished doing the 7th/8th grade musical “Bugsy Malone” where she played a gangster. She is now in practice for the swim team at her school Sacred Heart.

Hi, Well I have been playing Cello. I started soccer. Also I’m in Boy Scouts. I have not seen any summer friends. I play cello in my school orchestra and sing in chorus. I have been playing soccer for the first time with a group called S.A.C. It’s really fun. In Boy Scouts I’m a webelo 2 and I’m working towards my Arrow of Light. Next summer I will be sailing in Annapolis and this winter I will be skiing on a race team. Marcus Adam

I had a fun soccer season with friends on the Hanover maroon team! Will Blinkhorn

Hi, I hiked up Moose Mountain. It was very fun! Jay Poulter

Q: What did the rug say to the floor?A: Don’t move, I’ve got you covered.

A mystery camper says, “Hello, You Rock! We have been

hiking many mountains now such as the Northern Presidentials.” Please let us know who you are so we can ask you about your hiking adventures!

Hey guys! I’m having an awesome school year! I’ve been busy with soccer, homework, and now basketball. Even though I haven’t seen all of you, I have talked to most of you and can’t wait to see you guys next year! I hope you’re all having an awesome year with sports and school! Izzy Wilmot

During my 5th grade trip to the Hulbert Center I was very happy to see Shrek again. It was very fun to have him as my core group leader. I am learning to play the trumpet. Jack Burnham

Hi Horizons Day Camp. I’m glad to see my friend Elliot this fall. I’m on the Norwich soccer team. I played Elliot’s team twice. This fall my 3rd grade class hiked Mount Cube. Peter Burnham

Hi everyone! I can’t believe it is already December. It feels like just yesterday I was at assembly singing. I’m missing the Falcons so much and wish I was still at camp having a awesome time with them. School is going very well for me. I can’t wait to see everyone again at Horizons. I miss you all. Happy New Year. Ryan Sullivan

What’s Newfor HORIZONS 2011

Although the campers and counselors are gone and the buildings are all closed up, there is still a lot going on at Horizons during the off season. The maintenance crew has been busy taking down storm-damaged trees, repainting the main house, smoothing out the bumps and holes down at the waterfront, and generally keeping our campus in good repair and looking beautiful.

Some exciting new projects are planned for this summer. We are building a remote campsite in a dell in the woods at the far end of the great meadow. It will have a lean-to, spots to set up tents, a campfire pit for cooking, and of course, an outhouse. Not only will this site be an ideal spot for overnights, but it can also be used as a destination for Nature activities or even as a special group spot for “cabin time” after lunch. The possibilities are endless.

We are also planning a few changes for the center of camp. The Arts and Crafts barn will have a covered outdoor area for campers to work on crafts projects while being protected from the sun and rain. This will give us lots of space for those bigger projects: tie-dye T-shirts, model tree houses, you name it! Down closer to the dining hall, we have plans to turn the storage shed next to Louise’s garden into a playhouse for younger campers. It will be a fun place for imaginative play, complete with painted trim and open windows with flower boxes!

One a sad note, the old stone chimney on the director’s cabin is no longer structurally safe and has to come down. It was built in the 1920’s with beautiful round river rocks. When the chimney and fireplace are taken apart, we will be left with a big pile of rocks. As the saying goes, “When they give you lemons, make lemonade!” So we are going to take that big pile of rocks and make raised garden beds! What would you like to plant in our new gardens? Flowers, vegetables, berries? Come to camp ready to get your hands in the dirt because this will be a project we can all work on together!

Everyone loves to come back to their favorite familiar spots at camp: singing together in the Assembly Hall, tumbling in the Wolfe Den, sharing a meal in the Dining Hall, or diving off the floating dock at the Waterfront.

But it will also be fun to see the exciting new changes to our beautiful Horizons campus!

Q. What do you get from a pampered cow?A. Spoiled milk.

Looking out my window at 4:30 in the afternoon and viewing the darkness, I yearn for the sun and the laughter that comes with camp. As we go into the winter months with our lists of things to do, I fondly remember all the smiling faces, singing our favorite songs at assembly, having good conversations with our friends, sitting around a blazing fire and all the fun at camp. These are memories that we will stay with us forever! It is like a candle that brings light to our darkness and so I thank you for the light you bring me. Stay warm! Sincerely, Anna Alden

I have been hanging around the Upper Valley, playing hockey, golf, and looking forward to the ski season. I am missing the warm waters of Lake Fairlee, but I know before long we will all be swimming, sailing, and canoeing. I hope everyone else is having a great winter, and keep those warm dreams of Fairlee in your minds. See you soon, Chris Mudge

Hey everyone I hope you are having a wonderful winter and enjoying all the awesome snow. I was recently showing my brother the slide shows Tim Sleeper and I made for the summer and it brought back all sorts of memories from conquering the tippy test to the overnight and cook out to playing Quiddich against Hive. I can’t wait until summer 2011 is here and we can create new moments and memories. Aloha, Anne Perry

Q: Why are fish so smart?A: Because they live in schools.

Dear Horizons Gang,As the weather gets colder and colder, I miss Horizons more and more. I long for those warm summer days filled with the sounds of kids having fun! I did make it up to Lake Fairlee in October to help the crew over at Ohana Camp put things away for the winter. It was pretty amazing to look out over the lake and see our beautiful Horizons campus wrapped in the stunning fall foliage. Sophia and Owen are both doing great, and Lilo sends her love to everyone. I can hardly wait to go hiking and canoeing with you all in July! Aloha! Tim Bucklin

Hello Horizons friends! We hope the winter finds you cozy and warm. Todd and the boys have been dreaming about skiing and snowboarding already, after spending the fall raking leaves and kicking soccer balls.. Recently, we were at the playground and we saw half of the Brennan family tossing football! In other news, we had our first real trip to the ER resulting in four stitches,

and as most of you know Jill doesn’t like the sight of blood. We had to have our nieghbor come to examine the wound!! We look forward to seeing more of you as the weather changes from winter to spring and finally summer! Hope you had a wonderful holiday season, and we’ll see you soon, Todd and Jill Renninger

This September the van Leuwen-Halls weathered the most destructive fire in Colorado history. We were displaced from our house for nearly three weeks but at least we had a house to return to. Luna continues to come back from some daily romps in the ashes looking like a black Lab! Looking forward to this coming summer and spending time on the WATER with friends and campers. Have a great winter, Ski ya later! Peace and Love, Lisa Van Leuwen-Hall

This fall I haven’t been doing anything that exciting, just preparing for college and my gap year. Now that we have some snow, I’m really excited for ski season to start. A good memory I have from over the summer is the capture the flag game, when Shrek, myself and many other counselors got dressed in blue paint and charged the field. As for next summer, I’m still making plans. Aloha, Clark Bray

My fall consisted of heading back to Vermont Academy and getting into the swing of school and living away. I am looking forward to coming back to Horizons this upcoming summer. One fun memory of this past summer was the all-camp capture the flag. It was fun because I remember when I was one of the campers running around during the game and now I am in the role of a counselor and it is cool to see how much fun the campers have during that game. Aloha, Garrett Kogel

My fall has been going wonderfully with a great season of soccer! I loved spraying campers with the hose and water balloons last summer on those really hot days! I look forward to returning to camp again next summer! Aloha, Miriam Whittington

I had a great Thanksgiving Holiday and am looking forward to going back to work at Westshire Elementary School. I currently work with students with special needs from ages 7-9. I have worked

at Westshire Elementary School for two years. My wife had a baby the first of October and our new son Brady is a very happy and healthy newborn. I had a lot of fun last summer working on the camp shows with Anna Alden. I particularly enjoyed the Velveteen Rabbit and its elaborate and colorful costumes. I also enjoyed working on the waterfront and teaching young kids how to sail. I look forward to more adventures with kids and playing capture the flag with traditional war paint. Aloha, Brendan Bell

Greetings from India!Shortly after camp ended I headed off on a new adventure as an exchange student in India for the year. I have been living with a host family, going to an Indian high school, eating spicy food, and learning traditional dances for the Hindu festivals. Maybe I can teach you some of the dances next summer! Right now I am traveling around the country with other exchange students from all over the world and seeing the most amazing sights. You can follow my blog at www.kelseyinindia.blogspot.com. I’ll be home before summer so I can be a counselor again at Horizons for 2011!Aloha (and Namaste), Kelsey McFadden

Fall was good, I played some soccer and enjoyed a good beginning to Sophomore year. I’m looking forward to basketball season and getting my driver’s license. This summer was really great, and hopefully I’ll be back next year! All the best, Henry Levine Page 9

Q. What did one eye say to the other?A. Don’t look now, but something between us

smells! Hey all! This is Shrek here wishing you all a whole box of holiday cheer! I’ve had the pleasure of watching the dwindling fall days slowly slip into winter from the warm and cozy halls of the Aloha Farm House. Hulbert has been a blast to work for this past fall, and now as we enter our cold and blustery off-season I think often about shooting arrows under the burning sun. Stay warm my friends! See you next Summer! Shrek (aka. Jacob Yanni)

This fall I played a lot of golf. My sophomore year at Hanover High is going great. At horizons I became great friends with fellow counselors, and we hang out often. After camp ended I have seen many campers, whether this be on a school bus, or walking down the street. I am always greeted enthusiastically, and many times this causes confusion from their parents. Summer camp really follows you everywhere. One of my best memories from camp has to be jumping in snake river to get one of my campers shoes which had been kicked into the water. All of the great memories and friendships made being at Horizons an amazing summer. Aloha! Angad Singh

I have been having a great fall! I have been playing a lot of soccer for my school. We had a great season! One of my many favorite memories from last summer was sitting around the campfire at the overnight singing camp songs. That was always my favorite thing to do when I was a camper. Next summer, I hope to be back, but I’ll also be doing a lot of newspaper writing and reporting! I hope to see everyone soon! Aloha, Hannah Sobel

So the camp year has been over for a while now, and I’ve been working on finishing up my last year in college, while preparing for the next step. It has started to snow here and the incoming winter wind is definitely chilly on the walks to class. It makes me miss those bright sunny days down by the water front and the laughter of everyone having fun. Soccer season is over, I’m in the middle of basketball season and soon softball will start up for me. So even with a busy schedule I am enjoying it all and hope you are all enjoying your year as well. Hope you have a wonderful New Year as well! Aloha! Rotice Tift

Hi Horizons Friends! The memories from summer 2010 are still fresh in our minds and we talk of them often at the dinner table. The 4th of July Carnival, the overnights, the “STORM,” singing in the Assembly Hall every morning, the night sky full of twinkling stars, and of course the love and laughter of our Horizons family. We miss everyone and can’t wait until next summer. Happy New Year! Aloha, Michael and Maureen Sullivan

Hey friends,I have had a busy fall as a senior in high school, but I have managed to still have a lot of fun. In the last couple of weeks I was part of a very successful all-school musical that happens every year where we actually stop classes for two whole weeks to prepare. Over Thanksgiving I had the opportunity to show an exchange student around NYC (we saw Jim Carrey). And last week I hung out with some visiting Cuban musicians at my school, practiced my Spanish skills, and learned some crazy cool Cuban dances. Look forward to the summer, but don’t forget to enjoy the winter, it’s pretty fantastic also! I hope everyone is doing well. Love, Ella Hayslett

What a fall this has been. I just recently completed coaching my ninth volleyball season at Mid Vermont Christian School. What fun we had, and all while winning several games. I have recently begun to work at a new daycare center where I am the toddler teacher. Ivan and Lucas attend with me each day. Ivan is in my class, and Lucas is with a wonderful woman in the infant class. We have been enjoying our fall, and will enjoy our winter. I am looking forward to summer 2011. I love camp, the lake, playing games, and making new friends. I can’t wait for camp to begin!! Aloha, Erin Renninger

Page 12

Q. What do you get when you cross a stream and a brook?A. Wet feet.

I have enjoyed a beautiful fall here in Ann Arbor with lots of sunshine. I have been hiking but everything is much more flat here in Michigan, sometimes I have to loop back, just to go up the hill again. I look forward to being back in Vermont where it is much easier to pretend I am a mountain goat jumping from one rock to the next. See you then. Beth Randall

Hello Horizons,Since camp ended, my life has changed in great ways. I bought a house at the end of October. As I packed up my stuff in the days and weeks before the big move, I ran across my box of camp memories. I found old calendars, photos, songbooks and crafts that were made for me over the years. Many of these artifacts have found their places in the decor of my new house. As I create my own traditions and new memories, I am grateful for the friends I’ve made and the role Horizons has played in my life. Aloha, Tim Sleeper

With snow falling in the new year, I realize that we are that much closer to another great summer at Horizons! It has been a crazy and hectic fall but

Cassidy, Storm and I have been taking some time to enjoy life too! We have gotten lost (extremely lost!) in a corn maze, enjoyed many great afternoons walking to the park and countless nights relaxing by an outdoor fire. The other day at school we peeled potatoes and made “roasted compost!” We seasoned and tossed those great potato peels with a bit of oil

and crisped up in the oven, it wasn’t quite the same as peeling potatoes with the guys on the front porch (rain coat needed!) but the end product was great and reminiscent of an amazing summer. Hoping for another memorable summer in 2011 with the same great crew (hint, hint, nudge, nudge guys!). Aloha, Corinna Magalhaes

Hi everybody!! I started high school this year and it’s been a lot of fun and hard work. I’m taking challenging classes and I’ve been doing a bunch of extra curricular activities as well. I have three shows going on this winter, Cyrano de Bergerac, the Nutcracker, and Aida. And, also a winter concert for chorus. I’ve been missing camp a ton, and I wear my apprentice shirt to school on some days. I can’t wait to see everyone next summer!!! Aloha, Amanda Watson

It’s been a busy fall for Annie, John and me. Lots of learning-new gymnastic skills, skating and sewing. (Last night I finished my first dress, which was way trickier than I imagined!) I’ve already amassed a large collection of recycled materials to use for crafting next summer, so come back and see what we’ll do with them! Aloha, Maf Terry

The soccer teams of both Isaiah Fariel and Addie Lyndes were state champions this fall. Isaiah played for the Hanover High School Marauders, the New Hampshire State champions and Addie was on the field for the Rivendell Academy Raptors, Vermont State champions. Congratulations Isaiah and Addie!

Jared Geilich and Hannah McFadden competed at UVM’s College of Engineering & Mathematics TASC design competition. The TASC (Technology And Society Connection) competition challenged each team to create an emergency shelter that was portable, easy to set up, wind and water resistant, and nearly cost free. Jared’s Hanover High School team won 1st place for Set Up Speed and Hannah’s Sharon Academy team won 2nd place for Packing Density. Good job Jared and Hannah!

Daniel Osofsky used his acting talents to play a Munchkin in Northern Stage’s production of The Wizard Of Oz. We hope to see Daniel back on stage at Horizons this summer!
