Alden’s CornerOur newest Tiger Row magazine…..what a great communication tool for

our program to “link” with all of our fans/alums/donors/faculty/students. We hope that you’ll fi nd this most recent addition to be informative, fun and appreciative of all that you do for the Tigers.

2010 was an outstanding year for Mizzou in many areas. Our student-athletes achieved an 80% graduation success rate (that is a TERRIFIC percentage!), we have been actively engaged in a myriad of community

outreach efforts and our teams have won at a high level. In particular and most recently, our football program fi nished 10-3 and had a fabulous time in Tempe/Phoenix at the Insight Bowl. Also, our volleyball program had a great run to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Championships, including impressive NCAA tournament wins over Northern Iowa and Northwestern University. These are just two examples of a successful fall campaign as well as an entire year.

We’re certainly excited about how the New Year is proceeding. Wrestling, Gymnastics, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball and Swimming/Diving are in “full swing”. It’s gratifying to see the commitment made by our coaches and student-athletes are paying off at a high level……you’re seeing that on the court, in the gym, on the mat and in the pool. We’ll continue to see successes throughout the winter and into the Spring.

A real “key” to our continued growth is the support of the Tiger Scholarship Fund. We greatly appreciate all that you have done for Mizzou through the TSF….but we must keep it going. The more folks we get involved, the broader our support for the Tigers in the classroom, community and competition. We’re thanking all of our 7,625 members and also challenging them...”Just Get One” is an effort for all of us to recruit new members while also growing our own support. The more we encourage, the more we grow and the greater the results. We hope that you’ll be able to help in this exciting initiative.

On behalf of our 500+ student-athletes, 192 coaching/staff members, 20 teams...THANK YOU for being a part of “One Mizzou”. We’re all in this together, and it is certainly great to be a part of this wonderful “team.” Happy 2011.....Best wishes to a wonderful year!

Q&A With Tim Jamieson: TEAM USA ON TAPIn November, USA Baseball announced that Mizzou Baseball Coach TimJamieson had been named the manager of the 2011 Collegiate National Team. Tiger Row recently sat down with Jamieson to talk about the selectionand the upcoming summer.

Q: What does it mean to you to be named the Head Coach of the USA Collegiate National Team?A: Personally, it has been a goal of mine since I began as a graduateassistant coach in 1981. I have the opportunity to be part of a team withcollege baseball’s best players, three of college baseball’s best coaches,USA baseball and to represent my country in the sport I cherish. It’s apretty special feeling. It’s also recognition of the success that we have hadat Missouri. Without the help from the coaching staff at Mizzou and thecommitment of our players, I would not be in the position to even be acandidate for this opportunity.

Q: How is the team selected?A: In the past USA Baseball would invite around 40 of the elite freshman andsophomore players and there would be a week to evaluate. The format ischanging this year where the players will be selected by the coaches and USA Baseball without the benefi t of the trials. We already have a list of playersunder consideration and we will track their progress during the college baseballseason. There will be other players who surface during the course of theseason. Ultimately, the team will be selected by the coaches and USA Baseballbased on performance during the season along with recommendations fromothers in college and professional baseball.

Q: Describe what will take place this summer once the team is selected.A: The home base for USA Baseball is in Cary, N.C., with offi ces in Durham. Wewill gather as a team in Providence, R.I. and spend about eight days in RhodeIsland, Massachusetts and New Hampshire playing teams from the NECBL(New England College Baseball League). We will also play a team from theDominican while we are in that area. Right now, USA Baseball is trying toget a couple of the games scheduled at Fenway Park. From there we travelto the Durham area to begin a fi ve-game series with Japan. We will play four of the games at different sites in North Carolina and then travel to Omaha to

play the fi fth and fi nal game in the new College World Series ballpark. The players and coaches will then go separate ways to fi nish the summer.’

Q: What are some of your memories from when you were an assistant coach for Team USA in 2005?A: When I started as a coach it was all about teaching and being hands on with the players, throwing batting practice and hitting fungos. As you progress as a head coach the role changes and it is the assistants that handle the majority of those duties. As an assistant for Team USA in 2005, it was a reminder and a return to why I chose this profession in the fi rst place. I was given the opportunity to work daily with a great group of players, of who several are playing in the big leagues today. We traveled to Japan and Taiwan, places I had never seen. I was fortunate to have two Missouri Tiger players, Max Scherzer and Hunter Mense, earn their way on the team and share in their performances at such a high level. And fi nally, I was blessed to be able to put on the Stars and Stripes everyday. It was a pretty humbling experience every time I put on my hat with the Team USA logo.

Q: What did you take away from that experience that can help you this summer?A: International competition is different, so we want to build a team that is made up of great players but players that can help you win. Playing baseball in the summer without school being a factor is a bit of an adjustment. I also learned that no matter how talented and well-coached the players are, they still need day to day help in preparing for and playing the game well.

Q: How is coaching Team USA similar to coaching at Mizzou? Different?A: You use wood bats with Team USA and along with international competition the style of play changes. When managing great players sometimes you have to manage egos as well. At Mizzou we have good players who have bought in to our style of play. With Team USA it is more of an all-star team coming from different college baseball programs with different styles of play and different approaches to winning. We have to choose wisely in picking players that want to win, are great teammates, and who already play a style similar to what we are looking for or who are willing to make adjustments. Team USA is more of a sprint – 14-15 games in about 20 days – Mizzou is an entire fall semester preparing for 56-plus games during the spring semester.

Getting to Know: ALEX GOLDAlex Gold has stepped into some large shoes asMissouri’s only senior gymnast. Her new role alsoincludes a spot as one of the Tigers’ top all-around competitors. In previous seasons she stood out as one of the team’s top vault competitors. Sheboasts an impressive 9.925 career high score onvault, and she has matched her career high 9.850 on fl oor several times during her career. While sheadmits to feeling some pressure, Gold is embracingher new role and hopes to take the team back to theNational Championships in 2011.

Q: Did previous senior classes prepare youfor the responsibilities of being in a leadershiprole?A: The seniors last year and my sophomore year,Alicia Hatcher and Adrienne Perry, prepared mefor this role and I think it really helped me. Evenrecently I have been working with the seniors fromlast year and they have given me some usefuladvice.

Q: What was the best advice you have receivedfrom them?A: They encourage me to take everything oneday at a time and don’t get so fl ustered about littledetails. I tend to get fl ustered sometimes and their advice has defi nitely helped.

Q: What kind of advice do you pass along to your younger teammates?A: I encourage them to relax. I have been a freshman before and I know that it is nerve-wracking to be competing for a team instead of just for yourself like you do in club gymnastics. It’s a different type of mindset. I want them to be relaxed and have fun, I want them to know that they can do it.

Q: Is there pressure on you to fi ll in where Sarah Shire left off?A: Yes, defi nitely. She is an awesome gymnast and a great leader. I have seen her do so well and I would really like to go back to nationals. It is a lot of pressure that I put on myself, but I am really trying to do well this season.

Q: Is there a different dynamic with this young team than there has been in previous years?A: I think so, I have a different leadership style. I like to lead by example, but if something needs to be said I will say it to the team. I think the system is working for me so far.

Q: How does being the only senior affect your relationships with the coaches and with the other girls?A: My relationship with the girls is the same. It is like I have known them forever. With the coaches, I think I talk to them a lot more. They help me with certain situations and give me advice on what to do. I also talk to the juniors and include them in leadership decisions. I think that being the only senior defi -nitely brings me closer to the coaches, though.
