Be a Youth & Teen Sports VOLUNTEER COACH...in our award-winning youth

Qualifications1. Be at least 18 years old.2. Complete a coach’s application and submit it to the Parks & Recreation office, 5850 W. Glendale Ave., by Friday, January 15, 2010.3. Be fingerprinted and have an FBI background check.4. Attend a mandatory coaches meeting February 3. 5. Attend the National Youth Sports Coaches Association Certification program (2 classes). 6. Adhere to the City of Glendale’s Coach’s Code of Conduct and department philosophy, “The outcome of the child is more important than the outcome of the game.”

Glendale Parks & recreationYouth Scholarship FundTo help Glendale youth who do not have the financial means to participate in city of Glendale recreation programs, the Glendale Parks and Recreation Department offers a scholarship fund. The scholarship fund is made possible through donations from businesses and individuals throughout the Valley. Scholarships are offered to residents of Glendale, 17 years of age or under, and are available for designated programs offered by Glendale Parks and Recreation. Approval of the scholarship application is made on an individual basis. Scholarship applications should be submitted well in advance of the registration date for the program the scholarship is being requested for. CHEERLEADING League (coed / ages 7-14 as of 2/27/10)– Ages 7-9. Sign up code #711175-01– Ages 10-14. Sign up code #711176-01Participants will be placed on squads and learn the basics of cheerleading and showcase their skills by performing during games at our Flag Football League. Participants learn cheers, chants, dances, jumps, basic lifts and tumbling. Volunteer coaches will emphasize skill development, sportsmanship and a healthy self-image. Cheering will take place at Paseo Sports Complex at 63rd Ave and Thunderbird Rd. Glendale Resident: $37 • Non-resident: $47. (Participants receive a team shirt and shorts, up to 7 games, participation certificate and medal.)

BASKETBALL League (coed/ages 5-12 as of 2/27/10)

– Pee Wee, ages 5-6. Sign up code #712133-01– Midget, ages 7-9. Sign up code #712133-02– Rookie, ages 10-12. Sign up code #712133-03This program provides girls and

boys the opportunity to learn the game of the NBA stars. These leagues emphasize fun while encouraging skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and community involvement. Games will be played at various school gymnasiums within the city. This instructional/recreational

league is based on fun and equal participation. Glendale resident: $50 • Non-resident:

10TH ANNUAL SILENT SATURDAY will be observed at all youth basketball games on Saturday, April 3. Silent Saturday allows participants to demonstrate the skills they have learned throughout the season, while making their own decisions. It gives them the opportunity to play without verbal involvement from coaches and spectators (hence the name). Parents are permitted to applaud good plays and be creative in showing their support using posters and pom poms. Parents, coaches and children will take part in a short evaluation/survey upon conclusion of the games.

SIGN UP INFORMATION... SIGN UP DECEMBER 14–JANUARY 15. Late registration is January 9–15 (Late fee is $10.) Note: For cancellation/refund policy, see page 34. After the sign up deadline, teams often need additional players. Those still wishing to sign up will be put on a waiting list and placed on teams if space permits.

LEAGUE GAME TIMES are Saturdays, February 27–April 10, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. (April 3 games will start early afternoon so families can attend the upcoming Spring Eggstravaganza event in the morning.)

WHEN ARE PRACTICES? Practices should begin the week of February 8 if enough parents/volun-teers have shown an interest in coaching. The volunteer coach determines the practice location, day(s) and time(s). If you have a busy schedule, you may want to consider being a coach since you can structure your own practice schedule. Generally, practices will be in close proximity to the coach’s neighborhood or at fields where the games will be played and most coaches will practice any day between Monday and Saturday and in the evening between 5:30-8:30 p.m.

BOX SOCCER League (coed / ages 9-14 as of 2/27/10)– Rookie, coed ages 9-11. Sign up code #712155-02– Junior, coed ages 11-14. Sign up code #7712155-03 Box soccer combines the game of soccer with the enclosed field of an in-line hockey rink. Shots and passes can be played off the sideline and end line boards for an arena soccer feel. This league will be played at our in-line outdoor hockey rink at Bonsall Park, 59th Ave. and Bethany Home Rd. Glendale resident: $42 • Non-resident: $52. Coach Pitch KICKBALL (coed/ages 3-5 as of 2/27/10)Sign up code #712171-01 An introduction to youth team sports for boys and girls, this traditional childhood sport promotes a stress-free environment. Children can learn and develop the fundamental skills of kicking, throwing and catching, and prepare for future sports such as t-ball, baseball/softball, basketball, football and soccer. The “AM/PM” and “PM ONLY” programs are licensed recreation programs providing a variety of activities for children ages 5 to 13. The program’s goal is

the total well-being and safety of each and every child. Educational activities, breakfast, snacks, arts and crafts, guest speakers and homework time are offered by caring, adult staff members. The programs are regulated by the Arizona Department of Health Services and can accept DES qualifying families (contact your caseworker for information on DES).

G.R.A.S.P. the Glendale Recreation After School Program G.R.A.S.P., is a supervised, drop-in recreation program for Glendale youth, grades 1st through 8th. Trained staff provides a variety of fun and educational programs including study time, indoor/outdoor activities, clubs, games, mini tournaments and guest speakers. Participants can register at the G.R.A.S.P. sites noted below during the first two weeks of school. When registering, proof of residency, such as a utility bill, vehicle registration or drivers license must be provided; otherwise, the non-resident supply fee will apply. After the initial two-week registration period, all registrations must be completed at the Glendale Parks and Recreation office at 5850 W.
