INSIDE...

FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Another yearhas come andgone and wewelcome theNew Yearwith greatenergy andenthusiasm.Much hasbeenaccomplished

this last year that we are thankful for. Throughthe values of Faith, Hope and Love we saw somany children discover their unique gifts andstrengths. Both students and staff are renewedwith the promise that each life has meaningand that God has created each of us with aspecial purpose. Through the decades, Eliadahas played an important role in helpingthousands of children realize their uniquepurpose.

In the coming year, we will need to be vigilantas our country meets the challenges of achanging economy. Fortunately, due to thededicated work of our Board andAdministration, Eliada has a strong financialoutlook and an array of services unmatched inNorth Carolina. We will be able to providemore treatment and educational services tothe state’s most vulnerable children, whenother providers are decreasing services oreliminating them altogether.

Much of the success that Eliada has enjoyed inrecent years is attributed to careful strategicplanning. These efforts involved activecoordination with Board Members, administration, support services,

treatment/educational staff, students, parentsand community stakeholders. In this effort,Eliada was able to develop a powerful plan thatincluded short and long term objectives forthe organization. During the last three years,Eliada has accomplished over 96% of theseobjectives; evidence of the importance andpower of Strategic Planning.

At this time, Eliada is embarking on a newseries of strategic planning exercises that willchart out Eliada’s services for the next comingdecades. This process will entail six months ofregular meetings with our Board andAdministration. In this endeavor, we will becalling on you for your ideas and opinions. OnMay 1, 2009 a survey will be mailed to you toask what you believe Eliada’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats are. Wewant to know what you think Eliada does well, what we can improve on and what types ofservices our community needs most.

Once our Strategic Planning is completed inJuly, you will get an update on the process anda listing of the short and long term goals, initiatives and objectives for Eliada. This is anexciting process as it will provide a solid roadmap for our organization. As always weappreciate your interest in our students, yourfinancial support of our organization and yourcommitment to “Helping Children Succeed.”

Happy New Year,

A NEW COTTAGE OPENS AT ELIADA

In years past, Earle Cottagehas been home to the CEOand to the foster careprogram. Now, it will be hometo up to 5 young boys inneed.

“We serve young children inour Child Developmentprogram,” says CEO MarkUpright, “but up until now ourresidential program hasfocused on adolescents.Adding this new residentialcottage for younger childrenwill help us fill a criticalregional gap in care.”

Earle Cottage will be what isknown as a PsychiatricResidential Treatment Facility(PRTF). Children who need

PRTF care have extremelyintensive mental health needs, and are often sent far fromtheir homes due to lack ofavailable PRTF placements.Last year, over 50 childrenwere sent out of NC entirelybecause of this shortage.

“We know that children dobetter when their families orcaregivers are involved. Whenchildren have to be sent away, that makes family involvementextremely difficult. That’s whywe feel it is so important toprovide this type of high-levelcare locally,” says Upright.

The first young residentsmoved in this November andare doing well.

Earle Cottage, which will be home to five young children ages 6-12, opened in No-vember of 2008. The cottage will primarily serve intensively needy young boys.

2008 “SANTAS”Christmas at Eliada

Since Eliada’s founding over a century ago, we havedepended on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and churches to help provide a happy holiday season forthe children who are in our care. Once again, thecommunity came together to give our children anamazing Christmas.

Over 50 individuals and businesses volunteered toprovide gifts for children in need. Our students enjoyeda Christmas party and dinner staffed by volunteers, andBiltmore Baptist again sponsored children and includedthem in their church activities & celebrations. The AppleCountry Woodcrafters donated handmade wooden toysto the children, and other handcrafted gifts wereprovided by the Linus Project and the WNC Knitters &Crocheters. The generosity of the Asheville area, even inthe midst of such challenging economic times, was atestament to the philanthropy of our region.

Teamwork is a core value here at Eliada, and this year ittook not only a team but a community to cometogether and make the holidays brighter for ourstudents. Thank you to everyone who sponsored a child, volunteered, made a financial contribution, or donated inother ways to support children in need!

Church Spotlight: Central United Methodist

Central United Methodist Church is Asheville’sfirst church, having been in existence for over171 years. As far back as the early 1800’s thechurch had a philanthropic presence in ourcommunity, founding a legacy of service that

continues to this day.

For decades, Central UMC has been asupporter of Eliada. The church as well as TheMartha Circle and the adult study classes havelong given of their time and treasure as a partof their outreach ministry. This support comesto us through many paths, such as thesponsorship of our residential students duringthe Christmas holidays and year-round gifts tosupport the programs and services we provideevery day of the year.

A special thanks goes out to the membershipand staff of Central United Methodist Churchfor their partnership with Eliada throughoutthese many years.

Thank You Deerfield! Each year, Deerfield RetirementCommunity sets aside funds for a staffevent around the holiday season. Thisyear, in light of the economy, the staffwanted to do something a bit different. They called Eliada and found the perfectopportunity to give back.

On behalf of the Deerfield employees,Angie Littke and Linda Mechling,Directors of Nursing and Health Care, went on a shopping spree to outfit thenew cottage with everything needed tomake it a home. They purchasedcomforters, blankets, kitchen utensils, and other home essentials for thecottage, which will soon be home toyoung boys ages 6-12. Thanks to theDeerfield employees, everything was

ready just in time when the first residents moved in.

“These kids have been through some horrificsituations and need to feel safe and loved. Thank youfor allowing us to be a part of making the boys’cottage a home,” Angie said.

From everyone at Eliada, thank you Deerfieldemployees for your kindness and generosity!

Hailey came to Eliada as a 15-year old girl witha long history in the social service system. “Ihad been in numerous other residential andinstitutional placements throughout the state, most of which were incredibly restrictive andall of which only seemed to scratch thesurface of deeply rooted emotional andspiritual wounds from childhood,” she recalls.

During her initial intake interview in LionsCottage, she saw a small sticker posted in theoffice that read simply “begin within.” Sheremembers feeling the stirrings of somethingvery profound within that statement, whichseemed so different than her experience inother treatment programs. The idea of“beginning within” captured the unfoldinggrowth process that began for Hailey at Eliada.Through the residential program, attending daytreatment, and later foster care, Hailey gaineda network of support and encouragement.

According to Hailey, “More than anything, Ibelieve that Eliada signified a time in my lifewhen I finally stopped running away from

myself. I may not have known exactly who Iwas at that time, but I certainly becamededicated to the process of figuring that out.Growth and recovery is not some linearprocess with a fixed destination that you reachand say, “I have arrived”. It is a lifelongcommitment to truth, progress, and balance. This commitment is one I first made to myselfat Eliada.”

This confidence prompted Hailey to set realgoals in her life. With the support of Eliada’sendowed scholarship funds, Hailey was able topursue a college education. She excelled firstat A-B Tech and later at UNCA, where she wasnamed to the Dean s List multiple times. ThisDecember, Hailey graduated with honors. Sheplans to continue her education, with a long-term goal of achieving a doctoral degree. Inthese efforts, Eliada’s scholarship program willcontinue to support her outstandingeducational achievements. Outside of herformal education, Hailey also reiterates herongoing commitment to growth in becoming abetter mother, wife, and person.

Congratulations, Hailey. All of us at Eliadaknow that your impressive achievements areonly the beginning, and we feel blessed to haveplayed a role in your success.
