goals,
• developing professionally by
acquiring soft skills which teach

At the CMSC we continue to keep cur-
rent with the latest professional trends
in order to keep our students on the
cutting edge. Our staff has numerous
years of experience in their respective
fields and are a wealth of knowl-

grounds and are at the top end of
the ladder in their industries.
Our initiatives include workshops,
online resources, print material,
info sessions, one-on-one counsel-
ing, conferences, professional and
career development, assistance
with advanced education, pipelines
to industry specific areas, and
everyday we keep adding more.
Check out our newsletter to keep
abreast of the most current career
management happenings.
It is the goal of the CMSC to
empower students to be pro-active
about managing their own career
paths.

Career Management on Campus
The Career Management Services Cen-
ter engaged in a collaborative intern-
ship initiative with Arbitron, a media
and marketing research firm. Interns
for the initiative (chosen from various
majors) were trained on the purpose
and usage of the Portable People Me-
ter (PPM) then took to the streets dur-
ing the famous West Indian Day Pa-
rade on Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn,
New York. At the parade, student in-
terns interviewed and later informed
the community on the PPM while
video taping the action.
After the event students were also
trained on how to prep and edit their
films which were presented as market-
ing videos at a live on-campus show-
ing. The CEO of Arbitron along with
other company executives and the
Medgar Evers College community
were all on hand to congratulate the
interns on their stellar work. This was
truly a proud Medgar Evers College
collaborative effort.

Companies in attendance included Pro-
tocol, Inc., Enterprise Rent-A-Car, JP
Morgan Foundation, and Con Edison.
Not only did the BEEP execs lecture to
students, they also engaged them in
networking activities and informed
them of internship, employment, and
scholarship opportunities at their re-
spective companies. Students also had
a chance to mingle with the executives
and were encouraged to keep in touch
with them. Additionally, the confer-
ence also included mock interviews
which were conducted by representa-
tives from Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
During these sessions, students re-
ceived one-on-one counseling and im-
mediate feedback on conducting them-
selves during an interview.
What students had to say:
“I found this experience to be very
enlightening and encouraging for
networking.”
“The information discussed was
rather informative. The speakers
were [easy to relate to] and well or-
ganized… What was discussed was
valuable to students who will need it
for future reference.”
The BEEP initiative continued into
the summer where two students were
sponsored to attend the week long
National BEEP conference in Miami
Florida. All expenses were paid,
plus a stipend for students to partici-
pate. Aside from participating in the
Leadership Institute, students had a
full agenda consisting of workshops,
dinners, events and plenty of net-
working. They got to interact with
not only executives from a variety of
companies, but also with their peers
from other HBCU’s from around the
country.
The Black Executive Exchange Pro-
gram (BEEP) is a voluntary partner-
ship between the National Urban
League, corporate America, govern-
ment, non-profits, and other institu-
tions that loan minority executives
(BEEPers) to participating colleges
as "Visiting Professors." April 2008
was declared BEEP Month at Med-
gar Evers College. Under the leader-
ship of Director Deborah Young, the
Career Management Services Center
hosted the 4th conference of this an-
nual event. Five BEEP executives
visited various classrooms and con-
ducted a lecture hall discussion ses-
sion.
“The speaker, Ms. Walker-
Robertson, was extremely
informative... [She] is
phenomenal.”

The BEEP Conference was great. I was
able to network with professionals from
various industries and build friendships
with students across the country. It was
an experience I will never forget. Since
then, I’ve received interviews and
screenings from The Hartford, and
Unilever. I’ve also acquired mentors
from the CIA, and Adecco and have also been invited to at-
tend other conferences through these contacts. My campus
liaisons were always available to provide me with informa-
tion since I was unfamiliar with the city and also helped get
me acquainted with multiple industry professionals. Even
now after graduation I am still benefiting from the relation-
ships formed from the conference.

Sponsors Boot Camp for Students Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 the Ca-
reer Management Services Center
(CMSC) under the direction of Ms.
Deborah Young, launched its first Stu-
dent Professional Development Boot
Camp. This event was the product of a
collaborative effort with CMSC corpo-
rate partners, where a “curriculum of
sorts” was developed to address stu-
dents’ career related needs. The pro-
fessional development workshops pre-
sented during this event not only ad-
dressed general workforce topics, but
were geared to specifically prep stu-
dents for opportunities provided by the
employers. The pilot program was
implemented through the School of
Business with the intention of expand-
ing this effort to the entire student
body.
Workshops were conducted by CMSC
corporate partners, Alex Mesionzhnik
of Kaplan, Gayle Jennings O’Bryne of
JP Morgan Chase Foundation, Dr.
Wallerson who has a private medical
practice, and representatives from
Macy’s. Topics included Training to

On Thursday, September 25th, 2008
the Career Management Services
Center (CMSC) hosted their first
school-specific career fair. Piloted
through the School of Business, this
was the first of its type where
emp l o y e r s
were recruit-
ing exclu-
sively for
business ma-
jors. The
event spear-
headed by
Ms. Deborah
Y o u n g ,
Director of the CMSC was part of a
test initiative to greater meet the spe-
cific needs of the individual student.
The affair received accolades from
students and employers alike, with
students especially raving about the
intimacy of the event. A balance of
employers looking for everything
from auditors to sales gave students
an optimistic look at potential em-
ployment.
A proud moment was to see represen-
tatives from KPMG and Cayden
Financial Services, LLC who were
our very own alumni. These recent
gr adua te s r epre sented t he i r
companies as well
as Medgar Evers
College in a most
sophisticated way.
In all, the day was
a great success.

be an Intern and Marketing which
supplied students with valuable in-
formation on the do’s and don’ts of
being an intern along with its pur-
pose and how to get the most out of
the experience. Corporate Culture
Savvy and Networking was about
understanding how to work within
the culture of a company without
losing yourself, the importance of
Networking and how to successfully
connect with others. Employee to
Entrepreneur went over the nuts-
and-bolts of owning a business like
the importance of gaining experience
as an employee and building a net-
work prior to branching off into an
entrepreneur situation. The last of
the workshops included Due Dili-
gence, How to Interview at a Career
Fair, and Dressing for Success.
The event was wrapped up with a
networking session where the stu-
dents in attendance got a chance to
mingle wi th the corpora t e
representatives.

The event comprised a series of pre-
paratory workshops that included

and Financing Graduate School. The
sessions included guest speakers from
Kaplan and Princeton Review test prep
companies who were able to go over
the necessity of graduate school tests
and prepping for them. Other guest
speakers gave personal accounts of
their own personal journeys in apply-
ing for and attending graduate school.
Our own professor Mason conducted a
workshop and gave tips on writing a
personal statement. Overall the ses-
sions were well received and gave stu-
dents a forum in which they could ask
questions and be given guidance on
their next step to graduate school.
The series wrapped up with the
Graduate School Fair which was
very well attended by school reps
and students alike. Many were
able to make connections with
school administrators which in turn
made their transition into graduate
school a smooth one.
Ever wonder how some students land
their dream job, or at least a job they
really like. Recruitment! A major part
of Career Management’s operation is
the process of recruiting students for
various opportunities.
Matching students with the right op-
portunity is a mutually beneficial
situation for all involved.
The Career Management Services
staff works hard to make sure there is
a good match. We host info sessions
about various opportunities, review
resumes, and counsel students, mak-
ing sure your first impression with the
recruiter is a positive and lasting one.
The end result… a job we expect is just
right for you.
Realistically, going through a recruit-
ment process does not guarantee that
you will land your “dream job”, but it
will assist you in many areas:
1. You will get a better idea and under-
standing of the industry,
2. You will gain skills on the job search
process and how to prepare yourself,
3. You will start to get clearer on what
type of job you do and do not want,
and lastly
4. You will more than likely land a job
that will suit your needs.
