By their example, this outstanding group of young men demonstrated their loyalty, commitment and love for Catholic High. In ‘giving back’, they are helping to secure our future.

In 2009, efforts will be focused on continuing major capital improvements. Should we secure funding, the Art Center located in the former Alumni House on Vine Street, is slated for major upgrading. Architectural plans call for the reopening of skylights, a re-designed layout, air conditioning and new flooring and lighting. Gallery walls to display student art are included in this master plan.

This year should see the completion of Phase 1 of our three-phased renovations planned for the Gym/Auditorium. After much delay, contracts should soon be signed for the installation of air conditioning, new lighting and ceiling upgrades. The Archdiocese has slated the renovation of the Grand Staircase to commence this summer. Plans call for the complete replacement of the treads and risers and bringing the handrails and balustrade up to present-day safety codes. Sensitivity to the historical and architectural aspects of the staircase will be primary in the adopted renovation scheme.

Among our principal concerns for 2009 will be keeping a Roman education within the financial reach of our families. With the uncertain economic conditions facing our nation, many families are finding it increasingly difficult to meet their financial obligations. The tuition assistance we have been able to offer comes from area businesses and generous alumni. Regrettably, however, the need is growing faster than available sources of funding. Without a doubt, we will need more help from more alumni to prevent students from leaving Roman because of an inability to pay.

So as the year 2008 comes to an end, I extend to you and your families sincere best wishes for a joy-filled Christmas season and a peace-filled New Year! I also relay my personal thanks and appreciation to all active alumni who have helped, in big ways or small, to advance the mission of our school. Additionally, I extend a heartfelt invitation to those who have not been active, to consider getting involved. Let’s make 2009 the year you stop by and pay a visit. Once a part of the Roman family, you are always welcomed here, back home!

Sincerely,

The ending of one year and the beginning of another is a traditional time for reflections on the past and identifying hopes for the future. The year 2008 has, in fact, been an exciting time for Catholic High. We opened our doors this year with the largest freshman class in recent memory. Our young men have consistently proven themselves academically and athletically. The spirit of volunteerism among the student body is edifying. Parent involvement in the Mothers' and Fathers' Clubs, as well as the various booster clubs for athletics and the music program has grown. Our expanding campus is active day and night!

The members of the Class of 2008 set a standard of support to their alma mater which was unparalleled. Before graduation, as they were inducted into the RCHS Alumni Association, many students made a five-year financial pledge to Annual Giving.

Thank You Dear Alumni,

I am writing to thank you for your charitable donation in the form of financial support for the academic scholarship program at Roman Catholic. I cannot properly express in words how truly thankful my family and I are for the financial assistance that I have received. Had we not received this assistance, we would be forced to accomodate for the additional financial burden in the coming year. This fine institution that is Catholic High has already impacted my life and has begun preparing me for the hardships that likely lie ahead. The future is unpredictable and by the time I graduate, these unexpected challenges will not take me by surprise or overwhelm me. Knowing how helpful this aid was, I will strive to support another worthy young student at Catholic High in the future.

Thank you once again for your continued time and generosity towards Roman Catholic High School.

Sincerely,"Tom" '10

Dear Roman Alumni,

I would like to thank you for awarding me an academic scholarship this year. I am a member of the Class of 2011. I play the baritone horn in the band and I am also in the school Jazz Band. Last year, I received First Honors for both semesters. This grant is helping because I am able to attend a prestigious high school, which will give me an excellent education. Again, I thank you for awarding me an academic scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year.

Sincerely,"Frank" '11

The Roman Catholic High School Alumni Association extends its gratitude to Dennis Seddon for 22 amazing years as head basketball coach. Coach Seddon served as a mentor and a friend to generations of Cahillites who entered the gymnasium as boys, and left as warriors. Thank you, Dennis. We will miss you.

Dear Father Bongard,

As a former basketball player at Roman Catholic High School, I was saddened to hear that Coach Seddon has retired after a tremendous career. I thank Coach Seddon for being a great coach and the most successful in our school's history. There are many former players who are better people today because of the competitive environment that was created and the success we had. I look back on my experience at Roman as of the best in my life.

It is time for a new beginning and special future of Roman Catholic Basketball. I could not happier that you and Roman have selected Chris McNesby '95 as the interim head coach. I personally would not want anyone other than Chris to carry on Roman's rich basketball tradition. Chris is ready and has worked hard in preparation for this opportunity.

I wish you the best and thank you for your time and service to Catholic High - take care and Go Cahillites!

Respectfully, Mike McKee '90

Dear Fr. Bongard,

Thanks for bringing the Senior Class from Roman Catholic High School to Mass yesterday at the Cathedral to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Cardinal Rigali's Installation as Archbishop. The gathering of so many of the faithful with His Eminence for Mass on this important occasion meant a great deal to him.

Fraternally yours in Christ,Reverend Monsignor John J. McIntyre

By 1969, Jack was the lead engineer on the Apollo communications project. When Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon on July 20, 1969 and proclaimed, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” it was Jack’s radio transmitter that sent those famous words across the globe.

Jack Yanosov’s accomplishments were honored in a 2004 speech by Congressman Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey, who said, “The race for the moon was more than just a prize in darkest reaches of space, it symbolized our nation’s commitment to American ingenuity…I am proud that a resident of New Jersey played such an important role in this groundbreaking human achievement.”

The Roman Catholic Alumni Association would like to congratulate Jack Yanosov on his achievements and thank him for his support of Catholic High over the years. Jack is now happily retired and living in Cape May Point, New Jersey.

In 1950, a young man graduated from Roman Catholic High School and stepped onto the assembly line at the RCA headquarters in Camden, New Jersey. Little did Jack Yanosov know, by 1969, he would be an unsung hero in households around the world. Like many Cahillites before and after him, Jack wanted to do as much as he could with his skills, so while working at RCA, he achieved his associate’s degree in electronic engineering in 1953 from Temple Technical School. Shortly thereafter, Jack was called on by Uncle Sam to serve his country in the Korean War like many of the men of his generation.

When he returned from the war, Jack’s technical background furthered his career in electronic communications. He began working at the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico where he was able to work with ham radio. As Jack gained more and more knowledge of electronic engineering, he started working with the United States Space Program during a pivotal time in our nation’s history.

On Wednesday, November 26, Roman Catholic's Annual Blue Mass was held at the Cathedral Basilica of Ss. Peter and Paul. What was once simply the traditional Thanksgiving liturgy has now become a mass honoring members of the Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments. Parents of RCHS students and Roman Alums who serve the public as police officers and firefighters are invited each year to join in the celebration of the Mass and the solemn remembrance of their peers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Kudos to Mrs. Maureen Brown of the Roman Catholic faculty who coordinates this beautiful Mass each year.

With the change of season comes the beginning of winter sports at Roman Catholic. Within the

next few weeks, Bowling, Swimming, Indoor Track, Basketball, and Wrestling will be in full swing at Broad and Vine. Good luck to all of the coaches

and their teams. A special welcome and good luck go out to interim Varsity Basketball Coach Chris McNesby '95 and his staff as well as Indoor Track

Coach David Robinson ‘00.

Cross CountryCoach Kevin Verbrugghe’s Cross Country team finished 2nd in the Southern Division Championship race and 5th in the Catholic League Championship race. Standout runner, Alek Hughes ‘09, qualified and competed in the State Cross Country Championships in Hershey, PA after finishing in the top ten at the District 12 Championship. Alek and fellow senior Rob Gregor ‘09 were named to the Second Team All-Catholic Cross Country Team.

SoccerLed by Coach Ray DeStephanis, the Varsity Soccer team clinched a playoff berth against top seeded Father Judge. Senior Joe Brydges ‘09 helped guide his team to the playoffs as a First Team All-Catholic forward. Senior goalie Ryan Cranney ‘09 was named Second Team All-Catholic. Third Team All-Catholic honors went to junior defender John Dugan ‘10 and sophomore mid-fielder Nico Delgado ‘11. Congratulations go out to first year coaches Ed Lieber ‘07 (Junior Varsity) and Mark Casasanto (Freshman) on successful seasons.

GolfHead Golf Coach at Catholic High, Dan Hoban ’92, had a nice season with his golf team. The team, comprised of 1st team All-Catholics Tim Magenta ’10 and Anthony Hoffman ’12, finished with a very respectable 5-3 record, including a key victory over St. Joseph’s Prep. Unfortunately, the guys could not get it done in the PCL championship match. Coach Hoban seems extremely optimistic and excited about the upcoming year. Congrats to Coach Hoban and his team on a fine season.

FootballThe defending champion Cahillites started off the 2008 season with key victories against Chestnut Hill Academy, Monsignor Bonner, Archbishop Ryan, and highly ranked Souderton High School. Unfortunately, tough losses against key Catholic League opponents kept the Cahillites from defending their championship title. Standout running back Kasseim Everett ‘09 had a historic year leading the Catholic League in rushing yards. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the AAAA Division within the Catholic League and was also named First Team All-Catholic at running back and defensive back. Fellow senior Tahir Basil ‘09 was also named First Team All-Catholic. Honorable Mention honors went to seniors Bob Kalinoski ‘09, Marty Bernard ‘09, Amir Little ‘09, Kevin Regan ‘10, Dennis Regan ‘11 and Kyle Haber ‘11. Good luck to Coach Joe McCourt ‘01 and his staff in the 2009 season next year!

Message from the Alumni President Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our Alumni, friends, benefactors, and your families. May your holiday season be filled with peace, joy and happiness!

A special remembrance and gratitude with holiday wishes to Father Bongard, Larry, Dave, Mike F., Mike R., Joe, John, Al, Bill, Denise, Ann, Pat, Lisa, Tom, and Bern .

Reflecting on this past year, we have heard the word “change” mentioned time and time again by the media. During the year of 2008, change has taken place in different sectors at Roman Catholic H.S. The Development Office has welcomed Denise LePera as Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, Ann Vassallo as Director of Development, and Lisa Wolfington to our financial staff joining our incumbent alumni office manager, Bernadine Mahon.

We bid fond farewell to Joe Flaherty '56 and thank him for his many years of service in the alumni office and dedication to Catholic High.

The Athletic Department also has experienced change as we welcomed Dennis DiGiovanni’02 as Director of Athletics, Joe McCourt '01 as Football Coach, and Chris McNesby ’95 as interim Basketball Coach.

We have been blessed with having men such as Athletic Director Dave Falcione ’77, Football Coach Jim Murphy, and Basketball Coach Dennis Seddon counsel and coach our young student athletes. We thank them for the joy and success that they provided to the Roman Catholic students, faculty and alumni by their many championship seasons. Our many thanks and grateful appreciation goes to them as we wish them well in their future pursuits.

There has also been a positive change to the school campus and curriculum. The former Alumni House on Vine Street is now the home of our “Fine Arts Center.” The 3rd floor gym is being improved and upgraded with the addition of air conditioning, new windows, as well as doors and walls being repaired and painted. This is a work in progress. Unfortunately, we can’t enlarge the size of the gym and seating capacity. Some new academic opportunities offered include Mandarin Chinese, Digital Photography, Choral Music and Sports Medicine. The other change has been the downturn in our economy. This presents Roman Catholic High School with a financial challenge to continue to provide an affordable good Catholic education for our young men. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your gratitude for receiving your education at Roman Catholic by responding generously to our Alma Mater.

May God bless you for your past generosity and your continued stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure in the spirit of Catholic High! Sincerely, Richard T. Trotter '49 Alumni President

2008 Leadership Award Dinner

The 2008 Greater Philadelphia Area Leadership Award Dinner was held on Thursday, October 16 at the Union League of Philadelphia. This year's Leadership Award recipient was Brian Tierney, CEO of Tierney Communications and publisher of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Roman Catholic family expresses its thanks to all the attendees, students, faculty, and administration who make this event such an enjoyable success each and every year. If you could not make it, we hope to see you next year.

Men of ServiceFormer Alumni President Jim Fitzsimmons '67, now the President of the Malvern Retreat House was on deck for the Malvern Communion breakfast held in honor of the armed forces, police, and firefighters on board the battleship USS New Jersey on September 14, 2008.

In an interview with Lou Baldwin of the Catholic Standard and Times, Jim said, "It is only fitting that we honor men who served our country and fought for our people. We also added the police and firefighters this year, especially the police officers who lost their lives in the past year. They protected our freedoms."

This year was the first time the annual Communion Breakfast was held beyond the borders of the Philadelphia Archdiocese in order to extend the reach of Malvern. The Men of Malvern look forward to their retreat every year, and the Catholic High Alumni salute our brother Jim and his co-workers for making the retreat a yearly success. According to Jim, "It's a great legacy of faith," - a legacy of faith we at Roman are proud that he is helping to continue.

Profiles in StewardshipJim “Gator” McCoy '63– Charter Member of SHOF, Trustee and Alumnus

If you’re ever out in public and you happen to overhear someone singing the praises of Roman Catholic High School, chances are it’s Jim “Gator” McCoy. Jim is frequentlydescribed by friends as the consummate Roman alumnus, as he can often be found at various sporting events, awards ceremonies, meetings, and reunions for RCHS. He is a long time member of the Board of Trustees, Sports Hall of Fame Committee, and the RCHS Fathers' Club.

Jim grew up in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia, a member of St. Bridget’s parish. He graduated from Roman in 1963 and was a member of the RCHS football team. Jim graduated from LaSalle College and went on to become one of the most respected teachers in the secondary school system of the Archdiocese. He has been a member of the faculty of Archbishop Ryan for many years. Jim is the Director of the Gene McCoy Scholarship Fund and Golf outing, which was established in honor of Jim’s older brother, Gene. At present, there are 20 students attending Roman through the proceeds of this fund, and there are numerous alumni who attended Roman thanks to this scholarship fund. Jim is a member of the William A. Markward Memorial Basketball Club (named after the famed Roman coach), and was the recipient of the prestigious Joseph A. “Goldie” Graham Memorial Award for loyalty to Catholic High presented by the Roman Catholic Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. It’s not surprising that when a fellow Roman alum was asked to list the reasons why “Gator” means so much to Catholic High, he replied, “Wow…do you have enough ink and paper??!!” Jim has never forgotten his roots or his love for Roman. He and his wife Maggie live in Roxborough, just a short drive from Gator’s beloved East Falls neighborhood.

The Roman Catholic High School Alumni Association proudly recognizes and thanks Jim “Gator” McCoy for his continuing efforts helping to maintain the pride, excellence, and dedication that have always been the hallmarks of Catholic High.

Devon Cobb, a senior, saved a drowning boy while working as a lifeguard this past summer. Cobb, a native of Medford, NJ, was working at Birchwood Lakes Colony Club when noticed that a 4-year-old boy had fallen off a pier headfirst into the water. Cobb rushed to the boy's rescue and pulled him to safety. In an interview with the Catholic Standard and Times, Cobb stated that attending Roman helped in his handling of the situation, saying "They teach us that it's your duty to stick up for something or, if something's going wrong, to help your brother or sister out."

International VisitorsOn Friday, October 17, delegates from the Balkan nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia came to visit Roman for the second year in a row. These delegates, living in nations still rebuilding after a vicious civil war that ripped their countries apart nearly 15 years ago, come to America to experience how people of difference races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds can coexist in one place. We are honored that they believe Catholic High represents this kind of unique diversity. Juniors and Seniors from different backgrounds and neighborhoods joined together in the library to answer

Phone-A-Thon

Charlie Taylor, a freshman, was profiled by NBC 10 and the Roxborough Review for achieving more at the age of 14 than most people accomplish over a lifetime. Charlie, a humble young man, is setting an example for the young and the old in his charity work. He volunteers at a soup kitchen every Saturday, organized a drive to collect supplies for troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and made fifty strands of Rosary

If you received a call from a Roman student in the middle of November, chances are they were participating in the Alumni Association's annual Phone-A-Thon. For three nights, Roman students our students called our faithful alums who are always ready to help. The Phone-A-Thon is a great way for the past, present, and future of Roman Catholic High School to connect while keeping our tradi-tion of excellence alive. Thank you to all the students who participated and to you, our alums, without whom none of this would be possible.
