President’s Message… Who We Are: We are a group of sixty-one artists and art loving people. For seven months of the year we come together at evening meetings to discover new painting ideas and techniques from our fellow artists. Some of us meet weekly (Tuesday painters and Monday Group) to paint to- gether and learn from each other. During the good weather we paint outside. The Tuesday Painters meet at the Arts of Tolland on Tolland Green during cooler weather. We enjoy sharing our artwork at a yearly members’ exhibit and entering TCAA’s annual Open Show where our artwork competes with those of other artists outside our membership. Workshops, art related field trips, and art sales are also enjoyed. Who We Were: In the late 1940’s a few friends with mutual interests in art started to get together regularly. They met at each other’s homes to paint and then to critique each other’s work. At first they called themselves The Greater Rockville Art Assoc. By 1950 they had become the Tolland County Art Assoc. They were very serious about art and about the need to make it a part of the public scene. Who Shall We Be? Indeed, who shall we be? Shall we stay just as we are? Or, perhaps, is there another direc- tion you, the members of TCAA wish to travel? This is our TCAA. It is all up to us. Please let me know your thoughts about the future of the TCAA. President’s Message… Who We Are:

We are a group of sixty-one artists and art loving people. For seven months of the year we come together at evening meetings to discover new painting ideas and techniques from our fellow artists. Some of us meet weekly (Tuesday painters and Monday Group) to paint to-gether and learn from each other. During the good weather we paint outside. We enjoy sharing our artwork at a yearly members’ exhibit and entering TCAA’s annual Open Show where our artwork competes with those of other artists outside our membership. Workshops, art related field trips, and art sales are also enjoyed.

Who We Were:

In the late 1940’s a few friends with mutual interests in art started to get together regularly.

Or, perhaps, is there another direc-tion you, the members of TCAA wish to travel? This is our TCAA. It is all up to us. Please let me know your thoughts about the future of the TCAA. I look forward to seeing you all in September (9/12) at our first meeting of the 2006-2007 year.

Patty Naegeli Sketching (as used in forensic work) Sept. 12 Patty certainly has a diverse biography! She’s illustrated more than a dozen books, created wall murals and tiles, been involved in two high end gift lines, as well as the head artist in two exclusive hand painted designer clothing lines. Teaches workshops, is a Hospice Chaplain and Bereavement Counselor and is also a forensic sketch artist working with witnesses through recalled memory. Wow! Who says being an artist is only knowing how to put paint on paper or canvas to create? Creativity takes many routes. Shauna Shane Pastel Oct. 10 Our good neighbor and talented artist friend, Shauna will come join us again. She’s going to sing the song of pastels this time. The lovely saturated colors and loose but skillfully rendered artwork that she produces is a wonder to behold as we watch it unfold before our very eyes. Come along... Dan Nichols Nov. 14 Watercolors is mostly Dan’s ’home base’ but works in many other mediums. “I do not care for the sameness a lot of other artists seem to want. Each different medium is a new adventure”. Many of us know Dan from the Monday Workshops that he often participates in. He’s a talented and diverse artist. I might also note that he really does a great job in his favorite art subject: antique cars. The adventure has started!

GGGROWING AS AN ARTIST ROWING AS AN ARTIST ROWING AS AN ARTIST by George S. Bolge, director of Boca Raton Museum of Art Local artists who continually participate in the Boca (Florida) Museum’s All Florida Competition and in the process bare their collective creative souls to the harsh examination of critics and novices alike, really de-sire one thing—to share what is most precious and real to them through their art. This can be an ideal, a belief, a faith, a tragic vision, a particular delight, or it can be their sense of the reality and texture of life. During my tenure as a Museum Director, I have had the opportunity to observe the careers of many aspiring artists and have found that significant creative growth is neither the goal nor the achievement of every artist. Altogether, too many so-called creative individuals are essentially the same at 60 as they were at 20. They may have mellowed a bit and have been able to express themselves a little more clearly through their work, but the quality, depth and range of their art remains pretty much as it was during art school and early career days. This lack of growth has less to do with talent than with attitude and imagi-nation. It often results from the notion that art is more the perfection and application of skills than it is the symbolic recapitulation of insights into the quality and nature of life; more the working out of techni-cal and formal problems than the resolution of perceptual or philosophical inconsistencies and ambigui-ties. Growth in art implies movement, change, the leaving behind of earlier and “lesser” stages of un-derstanding and actualization. It suggests a struggling or a groping toward a goal—be it clearly or dimly perceived. But most of all, it reflects the most fundamental and imperative aspects of life: its dynamics, openness– and its unlimited fecundity. Growth is easiest within a healthy and clearly defined tradition. Such a tradition not only helps the artist discover his creative identity rapidly and with precision, it also presents him with specific goals, and with the basic physical and symbolic tools necessary to achieve them. Given such a tradition, and equipped with the necessary genius or talent, an artist can evolve and grow to the point where he represents the apex of that tradition. Today’s artist, however, has no such tradition. At best, he may have the example of an older artist whose style answers most of his own needs, or be the heir to a shaky kind of ‘mini tradition’ that permits two or three generations of painters to shape their art according to the precepts of one or two powerful figures…….
