A Note from Senior Pastor David Harrison
Hello Members of FCC!
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
-John 8:32
July, Independence Day! This is the time of year that our nation celebrates its freedom. When
you think of the concept of “freedom” juxtaposed with all of our current events, the concept itself
feels strange or odd at best. In a country, in which we struggle with the ideas of freedom, amidst a
global pandemic, which has restricted our everyday way of life. Amidst rising tensions in difference
of opinions, as it relates to the pace of trying to return to “normal” life. In a country that has had to
face the veridicality of its’ long history of racism, as we have witnessed protest, locally, nationally
and globally over violence and mistreatment of black and brown bodies. We, as a nation, are faced
with the paradox that is the concept of “freedom.”
This paradox is nothing new. In the book of John, we find Jesus at the Mount of Olives,
drawing a line in the sand. As he tells a woman, who was deemed a sinner by Pharisees, what
freedom was, to which no one could cast the first stone. We see the Pharisees dispute over who
Jesus was and his testimony, deeming it not valid. They asked Jesus questions, such as “Where is
your father?” and “Who are you?” Because, who would dare speak with such authority?
How was Jesus so free, and who was he to care about everyone else’s freedom?
The Pharisees struggled with such a radical view on freedom. They had never encountered
someone like Jesus. Someone more concerned about reconciliation of personhood over pursuance
of religious law. To those that finally began to understand, Jesus offers a glimpse into what true
freedom is. “Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
As the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), “We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for
wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s
Table as God has welcomed us.” This is our identity, this is our charge. In a country that is more
fragmented than ever, let us show what true freedom is, in the footsteps and teachings of Jesus, as
we advocate for the marginalized and the persecuted. Rev. Terri Hord Owens, our General Minister
and President, issued this reminder for the church and it rings true today, “We need to be the church
we say we are.”

We stand behind the individuals and their families who have and continue to
sacrifice their world, to protect God’s. May the freedom fighters have peace
and happiness knowing the countless lives, both tall and small, they stand
up for. The freedom they lay down their own lives for so others may enjoy it.
Let us always remember these courageous spirits & brave hearts, Hallelujah.
We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.
Among these are: Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

My Christian Friends!
Isn’t it amazing how quickly the months pass when we
are at home much of time?
Warm weather has arrived along with the higher
humidity. Some are taking trips to the mountains or the
beach, trying to make life a little more like normal.
“Normal” for some folks is already here.
Their cupboards are empty or hold very little to feed
the family. Children are home from school… They are
always hungry from playing outside and getting that
much needed exercise. Crisis Control Ministry is re-
questing PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY for their food
gift this month. Yes, these are the same items that our
church furnishes New Communion. Please don’t forget
one and give to the other. When you are at the grocery,
how about buying twice the amount because PB & J is
a staple food in every household whether it be creamy
or crunchy, jelly or jam. Everybody likes to see it in
their kitchen! Please place it at the double doors’
entrance where our mailbox is on the covered sidewalk
parallel with FCC’s parking lot. Mark it for CCM.
I don’t know another church in our city that is as
generous as you. I thank you on behalf of so many!
