Energy tip

Shrink your bills, not your clothes. 90% of a washing machine's energy

expenditure is spent on heating the water, so if you wash your clothes at 30-40 °C

you're saving significant amounts of money.

Operation Christmas Child - boxes.

You may already know that the flat-pack boxes are now available in the shop, as well

as the leaflets which tell you how to pack the boxes – what sort of items to include

and what items cannot be sent.

Please send £3 per box which goes towards the transport costs – the leaflets contain

an envelope in which to put the money. Alternatively, the money can be donated

on-line where you have the option to have a barcode emailed to you which will allow

you to know where your box has been sent. You can still use shoe boxes if you wish.

Please return the filled boxes to the shop by Nov 20th at the latest but it would be

helpful if you could get them there earlier.

Enjoy packing your boxes. Marion Bowler

Which is better? The new road sign at the end of the Main St, or the old clutter that used to be? Since this sign was erected there has been a 60% drop in HGVs going up West Bank. However, it seems there has been an objection to the siting/wording/size (or anything else) of this sign which has necessitated a site meeting to discuss it. The results of that are awaited with baited breath.

David Strauss

We should like to extend a huge thank you for the love and support from friends,

acquaintances and the local community since David died in August. Winster is just

the best place to be if you are going through a difficult time.......... His funeral

was a comforting tribute and we were touched by the turnout, the music, the singing,

the readings and Ian Aldersley's sensitive conducting of the service.

You will be aware that David was living with cancer; we have donated the money, so

generously given in church, at the pub, in the shop and on-line, to Beating Bowel

Cancer in his loving memory www.beatingbowelcancer.org

Over £600 was raised and this will be used to run a nurse-led specialist helpline,

among other practical and emotional help. Thank you all so much,

Rosie, Will, Oliver and family

SINGERS WANTED PLEASE

Winster Village Choir is our community choir which has been active for many years. Currently this small, but enthusiastic group of singers is looking to increase its repertoire and for that, needs new members, in particular tenors and basses. These voice parts are traditionally sung by men and naturally, men are always needed, but if any ladies know they prefer to sing lower down the scale, they would be more than welcome. You don't need to be able to read music, nor do you need a 'fantastic' voice. There are no auditions so the choir is open to all. The choir is also seeking a new Conductor and/or pianist. Anyone with any ideas or contacts is more than welcome to approach us. Please contact Ali Carter on [email protected]

The Winster Darby & Joan club members would like to express their appreciation to

the Carnival Committee for all their hard work and for their generous donation of

£200. It is a very welcome asset to our future finances. Thank you.

A great big thank you to Adam and Louise who organised the very successful Annual

Conker Competition last Sunday, where everyone had a great deal of fun and it even

rated a review on TripAdvisor from a group of very happy visitors!

These events seem just to "happen" and the amount of work going on behind the

scenes to ensure that this is the case is not appreciated by those of us who just turn up

and join in. So a big thank you from all of us, not least Helen's Trust who have also

benefitted from the event.

Here's to next year....

best wishes David & Marilyn

On Thursday 29th September, the children of Winster Primary School went to

The Deep in Hull. We went to the bubble lift first in groups and the last group saw a swordfish and a stingray. It came above us and it was fun! We went for lunch and then went to see the penguins. Two of them were having a race and then they started jumping out of the water. After, we went to see some sea worms. They look like worms that come out of the ground. They you move forward, the worms went back in. In the big tank, there was a catfish and a stingray went to sit down next to the catfish. Its wings took the fat catfish, and the two little blue and yellow fish kept on swimming around the stingray. Finally, we went to the shop and we had three pounds to spend. Before we left, there was a little tank and we saw two turtles. Written by Sammy Ashin (Year 6)

A great day was had by all and as well as all Sammy has told us, we also

became coral reef experts! The visit enable us all to really understand our

‘Beside the Seaside’ topic and the school is full of lovely work related to this!

Winster School: A Clerk’s Eye View I have been the Clerk to Governors at Winster Primary School for six years. Now I am moving to pastures new, I wanted to share a glimpse of the very special insight I have had into this wonderful school. During my time with the school, I have seen substantial change. (Almost) all the staff are different. The governors are too, with one or two notable exceptions: I suspect Roland Corfield, who has been a governor since the 1970s, may out-serve us all! The school I leave is rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted - a notable achievement. The passion shown by teachers, parents and governors for this small school far outstrips its size. This is evident in the amazing opportunities that the children are given. It is obvious to all that the teachers know the children well, but few will see the full extent of their knowledge. Through my work, I have seen the detailed level of understanding they have. They know exactly where each child would benefit from a little extra support – or challenge – and the governors ensure they are in a position to provide it. The SATS results bear witness to the excellent education Winster children receive. But I’m off, and the school needs a new Clerk to Governors! If you think you could be the next person to share the ‘Clerk’s eye view’ of our school, please contact Mike Hatfield on 650468. Or ask me – Jennie Lillis (653800). I’ve loved the job and would highly recommend it as a way of really understanding the education the village’s children receive.

Winster Guisers and their Tradition, illustrated talk by Allan Stone

There is a famous photo of the Guisers outside Winster Hall about 1870, when

Llewellyn Jewitt lived there. The current team was established 35 years ago, so this

Christmas will be their 36th series of outings in and around Winster. Allan will

describe some of the changes over the years, show a DVD of a performance in the

Bowling Green 25 years ago, and outline the background tradition of combat drama,

the ‘old 'oss’ and mumming plays in general.

Everyone welcome. £5 membership for the year is now due.

Don’t forget your Christmas wishes in the magazine.

Copy by 18th November or 11 December along with £5 for 1/5 page ad plus graphic.

Monies to Bev Atkins, Edge Cottage, East Bank please.

Come to the fruit tree pruning workshop run by Sally Smith and David Robinson Sunday 8th November at 10am at the community orchard, Woodhouse Lane, Winster.

Free event put on by the Winster Pond & Community Orchard Group

Roy and Roland would like to thank everyone who took part in their special service

to celebrate 100 years between them as Church Wardens.

It is impossible to thank everyone, the Village Choir, Bishop of Derby, bell rings,

Ross from St. Helen’s Church for a fantastic cake, Jean Gladwin for the flowers, to

name but a few.

Winster was recently listed in The Times as one of the top ten most desirable

villages to live in.

“Once a lead mining industry today Winster engages in more tranquil pursuits with

two pubs, a community-owned village shop and access to walks and cycle trails.

Property prices have increased 13% in the last year”.

I guess they don’t know about the recent conker competition....

Free childcare for two year olds available in January Derbyshire families with a household income of less than £16,190 a year or who claim working tax credits or certain benefits could get up to 15 hours of free childcare a week for their two-year-olds. And if their child turns two before the end of December, they could start in January. Parents can choose to use a pre-school, nursery or registered childminder and the hours can be flexible.

Your District Council has opted to retain ownership of the supermarket site in

Matlock's Bakewell Road and improve the rooftop car park. The decision comes

ahead of M&S leasing the former Co-operative site.

At a special council meeting on Monday (12 October), members decided to reject an

offer to buy the site, including the supermarket, existing roof top car park, former bus

station and market hall accommodation. Councillors felt there was a financial risk of

exchanging a major income stream for a single capital receipt. But that decision

doesn't impact on M&S's intentions.

Monday's meeting also agreed that £270,000 should be set aside to fund repair works

to the rooftop car park.

In the following eight sentences there is a hidden word in each one. Something

Would you rather watch football or rugby they can both be exciting.

Vicar’s Letter

"None of us can ever express the exact measure of our needs or thoughts or sorrows;

and human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to

dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars." (Madame Bovary)

This eloquent statement reminds us just how limited our words are. How very limited

are our linguistic expressions are. This can be seen most fully in the Services this

month. Think of the Remembrance Sunday Service; the music and reading are

powerful and evocative and challenging but what is the most powerful part of that

Sunday Service? Is it not the two minutes silence? The most powerful expression of

our feelings; our sorrow, our remembrance; even our hopes for a brighter future are

all tied up in this time of silence. Can I suggest that in this month of Remembering

we use music, readings, prayers, poems but most of all silence. Socrates said that 'the

unreflective life is not worth living'. We need to find times of stillness and silence to

listen to God speaking to us. We also need to remember that we are God's beloved

Children. My last piece of advice is don't give up trying to find times of silence and

stillness each day - even if it's while you take a shower or drive to work. God is

waiting on each of us to simply listen and be aware that he is present in our lives.

Stephen
