Dear Readers - Welcome to the latest edition! I’m very pleased to announce that on Saturday the 22nd February, that myself, my son Sam, my husband

Chris, my sister Mandy and 11 other loyal friends all made it

to Everest Base Camp at 17,600 feet! We had lots of challenges to overcome along the way, with bad weather from the outset, extreme cold (especially at night), and dealing with the altitude, but all 15 of us managed to make it! It has topped my list of one of the toughest but most magical experiences I have had so far, and all in the name of raising money for an amazing cancer charity at the same time!

Woodland Walk at ArleyEvery year since 2008 a dedicated group of volunteers has organised a walk at Arley to raise funds for Hear-ing Dogs for Deaf people. Deafness is a dreadfully isolating condition.

A hearing dog enables a deaf adult or child leave loneliness behind and re-connect with life by alerting them to important everyday sounds such as

the doorbell, a cooker timer or a text message.

After alerting its deaf partner, the dog will lead her or him to the source of the sound. But if the sound could indicate danger, such as a smoke or burglar alarm, the dog lies flat on the floor to warn of a hazard.

The walk follows a three mile route around the Arley estate including Big Wood, an area not normally open to visitors.

This year’s walk is on Sunday 26 April and registration opens at 10.00 am.

Winsford food and drink festival will be a one-day event, our main aims this year are to highlight mental health and the long-term effect that bullying can cause. The event is in aid of Mid-Cheshire Mind and Mid-Cheshire Foodbank, we are asking for donations on admission instead of a fee. This could be something as little as a tin of beans, pasta or even a packet of baby wipes. However, if you wish to make a cash donation there will be donation buckets available on the day.Food and DrinkThe event is a food and drink festival so there will be a large selection of food and drink for you to choose from, with over seven different varieties of food vendors, ranging from exotic burgers to vegan cuisine, and four bars, ranging from flavoured coffees, to a selection of the latest gins. There will be seating available near the food and drink vendors, bins will also be provided so please use them. Alcoholic drinks brought outside of the event will not be allowed to be consumed on site, you will also be asked to leave the site by a member of security/committee. No one under the age of 18 will be allowed to consume alcoholic drinks. Please do not be offended if you are asked for I.D.

EntertainmentThroughout the day we are providing entertainment in the main arena with performances from local dance groups and schools. Entertainment will be free along with the kids’ zone which will be full of soft play, inflatables and a craft tent as well as a dog show competition and some activities. There will also be a climbing wall and a paint shooting range and funfair these will have a small charge. The event will also have plenty of selling and information stalls from cakes to charities. This will all end between 4-5pm. Also, throughout the day we are displaying butterflies from a competition that local school children have entered. This will be your chance to vote for your favourite entry (there will be a poll box near the butterflies). There will also be a blank canvas for you to add your feelings and emotions through paint splatter (each colour will represent a different feeling or emotion). The butterflies and canvas will be displayed in the community space at Winsford town centre after the event. Throughout the evening food and drink vendors will remain with the funfair. In the main arena we are providing free entertainment from local bands and singers, with the last band being Northern Heist. The event will come to an end at 10pm.

Where we started: A & E Leisure was started when the Delamere based Caravan and Motorhome sales site closed in October 2011 at the loss of 68 local jobs. A & E Leisure started with 3 staff and to date has grown to over 20 staff(we still have some ex-Harringtons crew).

Spring brings promise of longer days, milder weather and life in full bloom. But what does that mean for your lawn?Giving your house a spring clean is a popular activity this time of year and your garden deserves the same attention if you want it to look its best. When we do venture back outside, we are often faced with overgrown shrubbery and under-loved lawns, and bringing your garden back to life can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be! As the temperatures gets milder, now is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC to keep it healthy and weed free in the months ahead. Last year’s milder winter means that your lawn has probably continued growing all year and could have done with attention a little earlier than usual. First things first, it pays to take care of any bare patches that may have appeared. The best way to deal with them is to carefully rake the patch and then sow some grass seeds mixed with a little top-soil. It’s important not to let the seeds dry out so remember to keep them well watered and you should see some sprouts appearing within a few days. Grass needs as much direct sunlight as possible to stay healthy and green so raking up any dead leaves and twigs is another important job and can be a great way to get the kids involved and develop their ‘green thumbs’! As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon can attract unwanted weeds and moss so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower.

Special fertilisers are available to use at this time of year to give grass the essential nutrients it needs to grow strong and give it a vibrant colour; these seasonal treatments have been specially developed to work in cooler temperatures. Spring weather conditions tend to result in a flourish of young weeds, and selecting a treatment that includes an herbicide can help to control broad-leaved weeds such as daisies, clovers, dandelions and buttercups.

Once you’ve carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, it pays to plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up. There are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass stay greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. An ideal recipe for a slow cooker - prepare in the morning for a delicious meal, ready for when you get home. If you don’t have a slow cooker you can place all the ingredients into a casserole dish and place in the oven on the lowest heat for 2-4 hours or until cooked. Serves 4

34 Updates from The Office of Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire….

Every community in Cheshire to have its own dedicated police officer

All of Cheshire’s 122 policing communities will soon have their own named police officer dedicated to tackling issues in each area thanks to a budget commitment by the police and crime commissioner. PCC David Keane has today announced that the Cheshire police budget for 2020/21 will include funding for the neighbourhood officers as police numbers in Cheshire rise to their highest level since 2010.

It’s thanks to the 43 additional frontline police officers, recruited as part of the commissioner’s budget last year and an additional 90 officers funded by the government’s uplift programme, who will be in post by March 2021. The new neighbourhood officers will work alongside the PCSOs already dedicated to each policing community to develop strong links with local residents and tackle emerging issues before they become more serious.

PCC David Keane said: “When I was elected I made a commitment to putting more officers back where they belong - in the heart of our communities. The community base model, which I introduced in 2018, has seen each of the 122 police communities in Cheshire have its own accessible police base and PCSO and now they’ll each have a dedicated police constable. “This has not been an easy promise to deliver with challenging financial circumstances and an increase in serious crime taking officers away from our neighbourhoods but I have fought for these neighbourhood officers as I know how important a visible policing presence is to the residents I represent.”

The policing precept – the element of council tax that pays for policing – will rise by an average of £10 per year, which is less than 20p per week, to help fund this year’s budget. It follows a public consultation where two thirds of respondents agreed to an increase in the precept to invest in neighbourhood policing.“This year’s precept consultation received the largest response we’ve ever had which is testament to local peoples’ passion and commitment to policing and community safety in Cheshire. When I was out talking to residents in our communities many of them told me that they wanted to see increased investment in policing to increase police officer visibility.

“While I believe that extra funding should come from the government, not the local taxpayer, I have listened to the chief constable and the public and increased the precept by a small amount to keep our communities safe. “This budget delivers on all my key priorities; including improving connections with our communities, preventing crime and anti-social behavior, supporting victims and ensuring officers have the best resources available to help them tackle crime” added David.

Funding from the budget will also be used to invest in Cheshire Constabulary’s force control centre to provide an improved service for callers to 999 or 101. There will also be investment in ‘pro-active’ operations to tackle county lines drug activity and other serious and organised crime. In his role to support victims, the commissioner has also set aside funding to further develop

Cheshire’s integrated stalking unit and to provide increased funding to Cheshire’s Women’s Centres that support survivors of domestic abuse. There’s also set to be increased investment in health and wellbeing support for police officers and staff with a particular focus on mental health support, and investment in the latest technology to ensure police officers have the appropriate equipment to support them in their roles.

Cheshire’s police and crime panel lent their support to the Commissioner’s proposed budget and the precept increase at their meeting today (Friday 7 February).

I Could Make ThatHi, A friend of ours had recently returned back from Marrakesh with a gift for Gabriella, a beautiful piece of fabric, to which our friend asked Gabriella to create something with it. So Gabriella decided she wanted to make a shopping bag, after all what lady doesn’t like shopping!! You will need (pic1)Fabric, Scissors, Pen or Tailors chalk, Pins, Ruler, Ribbons & Buttons.

Step By Step Instructions… 1. Lay the fabric flat and decide on what kind of size you would like your bag to

be, cut out and attach with pins any decorative ribbon and buttons.(pic 2)

2. At the top of the bag make a small hem on the wrong side of the fabric, then stitch. (pic 3)

3. Sew on all of the decorative items and also the bag handles, i used some lovely thick ribbon for the handles, or you can make handles from the same fabric by cutting a long strip and folding the two sides together and stitch to secure. When attaching the handles i sewed over the ribbon & bag several times to secure. (pic 4)

4. Once all the decoration is complete and the handles on, sew up the bottom and the side seams, press out the seams and then press the bag.

41Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show 2020

A key date in the equestrian calendar, held in the stunning surrounds of Bolesworth Castle (9th-14th June 2020).

The 2020 show is set to be truly memorable with the sports leading contenders vying it out for honours across such legendary classes as the heart-stopping Puissance to the explosive action of the 1.60m Equerry Grand Prix.

Tuesday – dressage Immerse yourself in the Þnest display of international dressage performances, complete with complementary workshops and masterclasses from leading international riders.

Wednesday – Freestyle Wednesday will see the climax of the CDI 3* – the Freestyle, with major stars of the sport dancing up the leader board to take the honours.

Thursday – Business at Bolesworth Business at Bolesworth will be the focus on Thursday with the event creating an environment for success. In the arena, witness the hugely popular and exciting Eventing Grand Prix.

Friday – Gents Day Gents Day takes place on the Friday with fantastic food and drink, fast horses and even faster cars… enjoy the summer in style!

Saturday – Ladies Day Dress to impress for a day of fabulous food, retail therapy and the latest fashion. Following the crowd favourite and edge of the seat Puissance, why not move on to dance the night away in Club Boles!

Sunday – Equerry Grand Prix Sunday and the major focus is the Equerry Grand Prix. The most explosive day of action, featuring the most competitive riders throughout the week.

My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. There is only one charity here in the UK that offers help and support to people affected by this deadly cancer, called The AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity. I have since made it my ongoing mission to raise much needed funds and awareness for them, along with my family and friends now nick named as #AndreasAMMFArmy!

OUR LATEST FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE EVEREST BASE CAMP – 13TH-29TH FEBRUARY!I’m absolutely delighted to share with you all that all 15 of my amazing group of family and friends, including my 17-year-old son, my husband and sister successfully made it to Everest Base Camp! We flew out to Kathmandu on the 13th February, which is one of the colder months of the year to take on this huge challenge. We had a few obstacles at the start of the trip as the weather in Kathmandu deteriorated and we were unable to take the planned flight to Lukla. Thankfully our head guide managed to source 4 helicopters for us all, and the pilots carefully navigated the bad weather to get us as close to Lukla (our start point), as possible. Unfortunately the bad weather caused us to land further away than planned and we spent our first day trekking well into the night! We then spent the next 8 days navigating the steep twists and turns of the awesome terrain on Everest, meeting donkeys, mountain goats, horses & Yaks along the way, we also had to navigate the many suspension foot bridges along the way too! These bridges certainly bought me out of my comfort zone and were a huge

personal challenge for me, but somehow, I managed to get across them all. By day the scenery was breath taking and stunning, but by evening the temperatures fell away and we spent most nights sleeping in temperatures of around -10 to -20 degrees Celsius, with our water bottles constantly freezing! The mood of the group remained upbeat despite the cold weather and on the 22nd February we all successfully made it to Everest Base Camp – 5364 meters! The sense of achievement was immense, this journey had challenged each and

43everyone one of us! The following 3 days back down from Everest Base Camp were an adventure too, as the weather turned on us again, and we had large amounts of snow, but thankfully this time we managed to catch the flight back from Lukla to Kathmandu before the weather window closed again! I can honestly say this trip has been one of the most amazing, exhilarating experiences I have had so far, Everest was so magical and has certainly captured a piece of my heart. I am so grateful to each and every person that joined me on this trip, we all pulled together as a team and helped each other out when the going got tough. The head guide, Sherpas and team of porta’s that looked after us on this trek were phenomenal, they all worked so hard to ensure we had a successful trek. One of the highlights of the trek was our group playing an impromptu game of volleyball against our guides and porters at a height of over 3,050 meters too!

I will be forever grateful to my wonderful #AndreasAMMFArmy team of family and friends that joined me on this trek, my 17-year-old son Sam, husband Chris, my sister Mandy Morgan, along with 11 other loyal friends Michelle Johnson, Andrew Suter, Anne Holdcroft, Marie Williams, Sharon Newton, Lisa Taylor, Dylan Hughes, David Wiley, Oly Rhodes, Erica Cordock & Neil Pollock. They all gave up their own time and money to be part of this epic adventure and have helped me achieve my goal of raising both awareness and funds for the fantastic AMMF cancer charity.

Since November 2016, when I first started my fundraising mission, we have now raised over £64,000! This has only been possible with their continued support and the generosity of the many local businesses that have regularly helped and supported many of my fundraising events. I would also like to thank the following businesses that kindly sponsored the banner we took with us – The Window Repair Centre, Bluebird Care Cheshire East, Auto’s Revived, Sandbach Roofing, Haslington Play Barn, Land Recovery Ltd, Lornfords, A.O. Events, Chelford Farm Supplies, Cowaps and The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance. Every penny raised has gone directly to the charity and helps fund valuable research into ways of trying to identify this deadly cancer earlier, and hopefully will help save more lives going forward!
