� І знову з ласки Божої до нас приходитьв середині зими велике свято Різдво Гос-пода і Спаса нашого Ісуса Христа, несучинам весняну радість, радість народженняНемовляти, "радість велику, яка будевсім людям, бо нині у місті Давидовомународився Спаситель, який є ХристосБог" [Лк. 2, 10-11].

Сьогодні народжується Той, на прихідякого надіялися старозавітні праведники, Той, про якого провіщали про-роки народу Ізраїльського, Творець світу. Всесильний Бог—Вседержительнароджується від Пресвятої Діви Марії як немічне людське Немовля. Дру-га особа Пресвятої Тройці, Син Божий стає Сином Людським, щоб зроби-ти нас синами Божими по благодаті, щоб ми могли безбоязно, неосуднопризивати Небесного Бога як Отця. Син Божий сходить з небес, щоб всіхнас підняти до небес, щоб дарувати нам життя вічне, "бо благоугодно булоОтцю, щоб у Ньому була вся повнота і щоб через Нього примирити зСобою все, умиротворити через Нього, Кров'ю хреста Його, і земне, і не-бесне" [Кол. 1, 19-20]. Син Божий принижується Своїм народженням, якпише апостол Павло: "будучи образом Божим, принизив Себе Самого,прийнявши вигляд раба, зробившись подібним до людей, і з вигляду ставяк людина" [Флп. 2, 6-7] з безконечної любові до нас.

Сьогодні радіє небесне і земне, сьогодні "прийшла повнота часу" [Гал. 4,4], яку чекали віками, яка обіцяна Богом, сьогодні збулося сказане Госпо-дом через пророка, який говорить: "Ось Діва в утробі прийме й народитьСина, і наречуть ім'я Йому Еммануїл, що означає—з нами Бог" [Мт. 1, 22].Ангели і люди духовно радіють. І сьогодні ми разом з Святою Церквоюспіваємо: "Христос народжується—славіте, Христос з небес—зустрічайте,Христос на землі—величайте" (ірмос 1 пісні канона Різдвяної Утрені).

Світ, який після гріхопадіння Адама і Єви, був оповитий смутком і тем-рявою, який втратив через гріх синівський зв'язок з Богом, сьогодні торжес-твує, бо Син Божий Своїм народженням знову відновлює людському родушлях до примирення людини з Богом, шлях до всиновлення і обоження.

В сьогоднішній вечір більш як 2000 років тому назад над світом засіяланова Вифлеємська зоря, щоб показати східним мудрецям шлях до новона-родженого Христа Спасителя у Вифлеємській печері. Як пише ЄвангелистМатвій, одні з перших, які прийшли привітати новонародженого Богочо-ловіка були мудреці зі Сходу, що бачили зорю Його і пішли поклонитисьЙому [Мт. 2,2].

CHRIST IS BORN!

� Once again, we experience, by the grace ofGod, the Great Feast of the Nativity of OurLord, God and Savior Jesus Christ in the midstof Winter, bringing to us a Spring-like joy, thejoy of the birth of the Infant, "a great joy whichwill be for all people…for there is born to youthis day in the city of David, a Savior, Who isChrist the Lord" [Luke 2: 10-11].

Today is born the One whose advent theRighteous men and women of the Old

Testament hoped for, the One proclaimed by the Prophets of the nation of Israel,the Creator of the World, the Almighty and Sustaining God is born of the All-HolyVirgin Mary as a weak human child. The Second Person of the Holy Trinitybecomes the Son of Man, to make us children of God by Grace, so that we may, withboldness and without condemnation call upon our Heavenly God, as Father. TheSon of God descends from the Heaven to raise all to Heaven, to grant us life eternal,"For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him toreconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heav-en, having made peace through the blood of His Cross [Colossians 1: 19-20]. By Hisbirth the Son of God humbles Himself as the Apostle Paul says: "…being in theform of God… made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond servantand coming in the likeness of men" [Philippians 2:6-7] with endless love for us.

Today heaven and earth rejoice, "the fullnessof time has arrived" [Galatians 4:4], anticipatedfor centuries, promised by God—"So all this wasdone that it might be fulfilled, which was spokenby the Lord through the prophet, saying: ‘Behold,the Virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, andthey shall call his name Emmanuel’, which istranslated ‘God with us.’" [Matthew 1:22]. Angelsand humans spiritually rejoice. Today we singwith the Holy Church: "Christ is born—glorifyHim! Christ has come from Heaven—welcomeHim! Christ is on earth—exult Him! (Irmos ofthe Nativity Matins Canon)

The world, which after the sinful fall of Adamand Eve, was veiled in sadness and darkness andbecause of sin lost its filial relationship with God,rejoices today for the Son of God, by His nativi-ty, again renews to humanity the path of recon-ciliation with God, which leads to adoption byGod and to Theosis (becoming one with God).

On the eve of this Holy Day, more that 2000years ago, the new Bethlehem star shone abovethe world to guide the Wise Men from the Eastto the new-born Christ the Savior in a Bethle-hem cave.

Возюблені діти Церкви—дорогі українці!

� За Божим Промислом, маємо знову нагоду звернутися до вас з батьківським словом.Материнська Церква—Вселенський Константинопольський Престіл—знову звертаєтьсядо вас, щоби розділити з вами не тільки радість, але й смуток, спричинений Голодомором.

Дедалі більше назавжди покидають рідні домівки, своїх дітей, онуків і правнуків ті не-численні сини й дочки українського народу, яким Господь Бог допоміг вижити в час все-української трагедії—Голодомору 1932-1933 років. Тому наше слово найперше звернене доукраїнської молоді, як майбутнього Української Держави.

Разом із вами ми прагнемо осмислити не тільки число замордованих голодом україн-ців, а, насамперед, причини, що довели до трагедії. Дослідження політичних і соціальнихчинників залишимо для світських учених. Ми ж спробуємо поглянути на Голодомор з по-гляду Церкви.

Як сталося, що в Україні, яка ще від античних часів постачала хліб до країн, що відчува-ли його брак, сама стала голодувати, до того ж голодувати в мирний час, так, як не голоду-вав жоден народ Європи в часи воєн?

Влада новоствореної держави на теренах поваленої імперії підмінила Вифлеємську зо-рю своєю кривавою, а замість Христової багряниці, що увібрала в себе Святу Кров Спаси-теля світу, була і залишається донині хоругвою, що веде до вічного життя й за якою зав-жди йшли віруючі люди, замайорів червоний стяг, що зробив невидимою невинну кровкращих синів і дочок українського народу.

Діставши до своїх рук владу, насильник не дбатиме про добро керованого ним ко-рінного народу, не пошанує його духовних, культурних і матеріальних цінностей. Він до-бре знає, що рано чи пізно народ прозріє й скине з себе ярмо. Тому для тривалого пану-вання необхідно стероризувати титульну націю. Збережені історичні документи колиш-нього Радянського Союзу рясніють відомостями про національність репресованих. Пере-важна більшість знищених, ув'язнених чи виселених—українці, до того ж, національносвідомі або господарі. Натхненниками, організаторами, керівниками й основними вико-навцями знищенням українців були ті, кого можна схарактеризувати словами Ісуса Хри-ста:

«Ваш батько—диявол... Він був душогуб споконвіку...» [Ів. 8:44].

Beloved children of the Church, dear Ukrainians!

� It is with great joy that our Church calls us to glorify God forHis loving and personal presence on earth of Christ in divino-human hypostasis, being one of the three persons of the HolyTrinity.

By God's Providence, we have another occasion for a pater-nal address to you. The Mother Church, the Ecumenical Patri-archate of Constantinople, hereby again addresses you to sharewith you not only joy, but also the grief caused by the Holo-domor.

The few sons and daughters of the Ukrainian nation whomthe Lord helped to survive at the time of the Ukrainian tragedy,the Holodomor of 1932-1933, increasingly often are leaving for-ever their homes, children, grandchildren and great grandchil-dren. Therefore, our address is first of all to young people rep-resenting the future of the Ukrainian state.

Together with you, we seek to comprehend not only thenumber of Ukrainians killed by the famine, but, above all, thecauses which led to the tragedy. Let us leave the study of thepolitical and social causes to secular scholars. We will try to lookat the Holodomor from the Church's viewpoint. Why didUkraine, which from ancient times supplied bread to countrieswhich lacked it, begin at a peaceful time to starve more severely

The power of the newly-established state on the territory of the collapsed empire replaced thestar of Bethlehem with one of human blood, and in place of Christ's purple, which absorbed theholy blood of the Savior of the world and which has been its holy banner, leading to eternal lifeand always followed by believing people, the red flag began flying, which made the innocent bloodof the best sons and daughters of your nation invisible.

As soon as an oppressor comes to power, he does not care about the good of the governednative nation or respect its spiritual, cultural and material values. He knows well that sooner orlater the people will begin to see and get rid of the yoke. Therefore, to ensure a long rule, it is nec-essary to terrorize the titular nation. The preserved historic documents of the Soviet Union arerich in information about the nationality of the repressed. The overwhelming majority of thedestroyed, imprisoned or exiled people were Ukrainians who were nationally conscious or goodmanagers. The inspirers, organizers, managers and chief executors of the extermination of theUkrainians were people who can be described with the words of Jesus Christ: "You belong to yourfather, the devil...He was a murderer from the beginning..." [Jn. 8:44]

Three holodomors, repressions, and war should have become for you, the Ukrainian nation, astimulus to spiritual purification, moral improvement, return to your forefathers' Christian tra-dition with its own Church and internal Christian spirituality and not an imported external, for-mal Christianity verging on the worship of ritual. And our visit to Kyiv for the celebration of the1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine showed us the real sons and daughters of theUkrainian Church, who pray to God and not to man, even if he holds a high post. We saw thateven the terrors of the 20th century did not break the backbone of the nation, did not make theUkrainian a slave and obedient executer of other people's intentions.

We call all to turn their faces to Kyiv, to Ukrainian spiritual shrines, religious and cultural, tothe Ukrainian nation: all people born in Ukraine have one and the same mother, Ukraine, whichshould be served by everyone, without exception, both those vested with power and "small" citi-zens. Remember the Savior's words: "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, andevery city or household divided against itself will not stand." [Matt. 12:25]

Dear Ukrainians! Your past, whether joyful and victorious or sad and tragic, especially theHolodomor, will always remain with you, even when you try to forget, diminish or distort it toplease your neighbors. The following words of the Apostle Paul apply to you: "Brothers, each man,as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to." [1st Cor. 7:24] Your call-ing is to be good Christians within the ancient Ukrainian Church tradition and citizens ofUkraine, as well as to witness unanimously to the tragedies of the Ukrainian nation in the 20thcentury, especially the Great Holodomor of 1932-1933, to the world. It is your duty to the mem-ory of your great grandparents, grandparents and parents, for there was no tragedy in human his-tory when more representatives of a single nation were destroyed in one peaceful year than dur-ing the several years of a war. And no matter what anyone says or if they try to belittle the evil, thisis the clear sign of genocide.

Children of Christ's Church, dear Ukrainians! In the days of remembrance of the victims ofthe Great Holodomor of 1932-1933, especially on its 75th anniversary, your Mother-Church, theEcumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, grieves together with you and expresses its deep andsincere sympathies to all of you and Ukraine's President, Viktor Yushchenko, who representsUkraine before the world and through whose persistent efforts the world learns increasingly moreinformation about the terrible tragedy of Ukrainians in the 20th century. We bring our prayers toour Lord Jesus Christ and ask the Most Gracious Savior to give rest in holy dwellings to the soulsof all those killed by the Famine and admit them to the assembly of His Martyrs as those inno-cently killed. May their memory live forever and may the heavenly blessing of the Most High beon you who are alive!

Christ is born to us this day! Glorify Him!� God's eternal Gift was not just the birth of a Babe inBethlehem! It was that, but infinitely more; the birth of theBabe was only the beginning. God's incalculable Gift to manincluded the faultless life of that Babe grown into manhood.His life's activity gave man the absolute certainty of His tri-umph to reign forever, as King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Jesus Christ, the Word of God incarnate, is the Lord ofhistory; He is the Lord of the universe! And that irresistiblefact is that all humanity and all the universe will find theirtrue satisfaction in consent and obedience to His Lordship.All longings and aspirations of humanity are to be fulfilledwhen Jesus Christ returns to reclaim His universal, eternalcrown! There is relevance in that glorious text of NativityEvening: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peaceamong men of good will." God's will and decision, peaceamong men whose wills are right; right with the Lord ofHeaven and earth and therefore right with the fellowmen.

I greet you this day in the spirit of God's Love. We need to understand thegreat meaning of the Nativity Hymn, "GOD IS WITH US" only then we’ll under-stand the observance of Ukrainian Customs and Traditions in our celebrations.Without fully understanding them, there cannot be true religious convictions offaith and love. We need to know the purpose of these celebrations with regard toGod's visitation in the Incarnate Son, and that is: "TO LEAD MANKIND OUTOF THE SHADOW OF DARKNESS, UNTO THE LIGHT OF TRUTH, BORNOF THE VIRGIN."

In our Traditional Ukrainian Celebrations turn our minds and hearts to thePrince of Peace—Jesus Christ. May the Lord bless you and your good works. SIN-CERE WISHES FOR A JOYOUS NATIVITY OF CHRIST JESUS AND A SUC-CESSFUL NEW YEAR.

Христос Рождається!� Божий Вічний Дар не лише народження Дитяти у Ви-флеємі! Так це було, але безмежно ще більше; народжен-ня Дитяти Божого це був лише початок.

Божий незліченний Дар для людей включало бездо-ганне життя виростаючого Божого Дитяти, його могут-ність в усіх ділах земного життя дало людям певністьпро його перемогу в царюванню на віки, як Цар-царів, іГосподь-господарів.

Ісус Христос, Слово Втіленого Бога, це Господь всієїісторії, Він є Господь Всесвіту. Непереможна правда длявсього людства і Всесвіту що вони знайдуть правдивезадоволення коли згодяться покорятися Йому і Господ-ству Його. Всі людські прагнення і палкі бажання спов-нюються коли Він знову прийде заложити владу вічногоцарювання! Ось доречність славного Різдвяного приві-тання! "Слава Богу на висоті, і на землі мир, у людях до-бра воля!" [Луки 2;14].

Рішуча Божа воля—мир серед людей, в яких воля праведна, праведна зГосподом Неба і землі й тоді праведна воля до ближнього.

Щиро вітаю всіх Вас у цей день в дусі Христової Любови. Нам требазрозуміти велике значення співу нашого Свята "З НАМИ БОГ". Тільки то-ді зрозуміємо значення для нас всіх культурних традицій наших святку-вань. Без таких почувань немає повної релігійної віри та любови. Потріб-но нам знати ціль всіх святкувань і ціль приходу Втіленого Сина Божогона землю! "ВИВЕСТИ З ТІНІ Й ТЕМРЯВИ ЛЮДЕЙ, ЗНАЙТИ ІСТИНУ УГОСПОДА, ЩО ВІД ДІВИ НАРОДИВСЯ".

Святий Іоан Золотоуст зазначає, що Вифлеємська зоря не була звичай-ною зіркою, тому що рухалась не так як звичайні зорі по небосхилі тількизі сходу на захід, а навіть з півночі з Єрусалиму на південь до Вифлеєму,східні мудреці її бачили і вдень і вночі, часами зірка щезала, а часами поя-влялася, щоб показати дорогу, а коли треба і зупинялася, як над Вифле-ємською печерою, де було Немовля [Мт. 2,9]. Святий Іоан Золотоуст роби-ть висновок, що це була не проста зоря, а невидима сила, яка прийняла об-раз зірки. Інші Святі Отці зазначають, що це був Архангел Гавриїл, якийприйняв образ зірки, а після їх поклоніння і принесення дарів новонарод-женому Христу Спасителю у сні вже з'явився східним мудрецям в своємудійсному образі, наказуючи їм не повертатися до Ірода.

Більш як 2000 років тому Вифлеємська зоря привела мудреців зі Сходупоклонитися новонародженому Спасителеві і сьогодні ця зоря привелавсіх нас дорогою до храмів Божих, щоб поклонитися Тому, який Сам є"дорогою, правдою і життям" [Ів.14,6] нашим. Вже більше як 1020 років цяВифлеємська зоря освітлює шлях нашому Боголюбивому українськомународові в Україні і за її межами. Цей шлях буття у Христі нашого народубув часами подібний до часів мученицьких перших віків християнства,понад 70 років сатанинська комуністична імперія хотіла підмінити світлоВифлеємської зорі своєю червоною зіркою, але світло Вифлеємської зорініколи не зникало і не зникне зі шляху нашого боголюбивого народу, бо знами Бог, який сьогодні народжується у Вифлеємі Юдейському.

Сердечнo вітаємо всіх вас, наших братів і сестер по вірі і крові, в діаспо-рі і в Україні з великим святом Різдва Господа і Спаса нашого Ісуса Христаі молимо, щоб благословення новонародженого Христа Спасителя перебу-вало над всіма вами завжди і повсякчас і навіки вічні.

As the Evangelist Matthew records, among the first to arrive and welcome thenew-born God-man were the Wise Men from the East, "who saw His star and cameto worship Him" [Matthew 2:2]. Saint John Chrysostom comments that the star ofBethlehem was not an ordinary star, for it moved not as do other stars in the fir-mament, from east to west, but from the north of Jerusalem to the south toBethlehem; the wise men from the east saw it throughout the day and the night,until it stood over the Bethlehem cave, "where the young child was." [Matthew 2:9]

Saint John Chrysostom states that this was not an ordinary star, but an invisiblepower, which appeared in the form of a star. Other Holy Fathers note that it wasthe Archangel Gabriel, who assumed that form of a star and who, after the WiseMen worshipped and presented gifts to the new-born Christ the Savior, appearedto them in a dream in his true form, warning them not to return to Herod.

More than 2000 years ago the star of Bethlehem guided the Wise Men to wor-ship the newborn Savior and today that star guides all of us to our parish church-es to worship Him, Who is "the Way, the Truth and the Life." [John 14:6]. For morethan 1020 years this star of Bethlehem has enlightened the way traveled by ourGod-loving Ukrainian people in Ukraine and beyond her borders. This path oflife in Christ, followed by our people was at times similar to the times of martyr-dom experienced in the early ages of Christianity. For over 70 years the satanicCommunist empire sought to replace the star of Bethlehem with its red star, butthe light of the star of Bethlehem never did and never will grow dim and willnever cease to enlighten the way traveled by our God-loving nation for "God iswith us", Who is born today in Bethlehem of Judea.

ination we offer God our service. InBap tism, the Monastic Tonsure, andthe Funeral we offer God our life.

Given the opportunity to partake ofthe sacramental life, to receive the graceand blessings God has to offer, why is itthat some people—even some who con-sider themselves to be Ortho dox Chris -tians in good standing with the Church—simply refuse? Some times this mightbe due to ignorance or misunderstand-ing, sometimes it might be due to pride("Why do I need to go to confession? I’mnot so bad! I’m a lot better than mostpeople, and that priest—who’s he to tellme how I should live!"), but in generalit’s usually due to the secular mindsetwhich cha racterizes our society and isim part ed through formal education andthe mass media.

Fr. Alexander Schmemann assertsthat secularism is a negation of worship,and by extension, a negation of sa cra -ment ality [cf. For the Life of the World]. Ifthis world really is all that exists, and if allthat exists really is the result of blindchance (the foundational myth and ac -cepted dogma of the ma terialist scientif-ic establishment) sanctity and sanctifica-tion can only be fantasies, on a level withbelief in the Easter Bunny.

If, on the other hand, God does exist,and wishes to share His life and Hisgrace with us, participation in the HolyMysteries—the sacramental life—is asu re path to knowledge of and unionwith Him [Jn. 17:3]. As Fr. Alex anderbeautifully states, the Church does notpossess or perform the sacraments, the

Church is sacrament—the sacrament ofGod’s presence in the world.

For almost 2,000 years believingChristians have partaken of the HolyMysteries—simple people as well asgeniuses; people of all social strata;saints as well as sinners; people of vir-tually every human culture under thesun. We all know the scientific method—a theorem is proposed, then testedby experiment. Here is a question forthose who would dismiss the HolyMys teries of the Church as unneces-sary or optional—"if people were notbeing benefitted by participation in theHoly Mysteries why would these prac-tices be maintained?" We have 2,000years worth of testimony as to the effi-cacy and benefit of the Holy Mysteries,to the comfort, healing and spiritualgrowth of those who partake of theHoly Mysteries in faith.

God wishes to share His abundantgrace and divine life with us, and doesso in the Holy Mysteries. Let us acceptthis gift, sharing our joys, our sor-rows, and our whole life with Him.

Participation in the Holy Mys ter -ies (Sacraments) is an essentialelement in the life of anyonewho wishes to draw closer to God

and be a healthy member of Christ’sbody, the Church.

As Christians, we believe that Godcre ated everything good, and that every -thing in this fallen world can be sancti-fied. The physical manifestation of thisconviction is found in the sacramentallife of the Church, where water, oil, bread,wine, people, even sickness and death, areoffered to God sacrificially in order thatHe might bless and sanctify them, andthrough them all of creation.

Jesus Christ did not preach a philos-ophy, but a way of life. He did not pro-pose ideas for our consideration, butgave commandments that we might ob -serve them. As members of His "one, ho -ly catholic and apostolic Church" we con -tinue to do and teach the things whichJesus and the Apostles did and taught—among them, performing and partakingin the Holy Mysteries of the Church.

Seven Holy Mysteries are generallyre garded as fundamental by OrthodoxChristians: Baptism, Chrismation, Con-fession, Communion, Marriage, Ord in -ation, and the Anointing of the Sick. Inall of these we see a biblical precedent.

Before beginning His ministry Jesuswas baptized [Mk. 1:9]. Following bap-tism the Holy Spirit was imparted to be -lievers [Acts 8:17], which is the es sence

of the Holy Mystery of Chris ma tion.Jesus says to his apostles "If you for-

give the sins of any they are forgiventhem, if you retain the sins of any, theyare retained" [Jn. 20:23], and St. Jameswrites "confess your trespasses to one an -other…" [James 5:15]. At the last sup -per Jesus says "Take, eat, this is my Bodywhich is broken for you . . . this cup is thenew covenant in my blood. This do…inremembrance of Me." [I Cor. 11:24, cf.Mt. 26:26–28, Jn. 6: 51-56], personallyestablishing the Holy Myst eries of Con-fession and the Eucharist.

When questioned by the PhariseesJesus states that marriage between manand woman is a divine institution [Mt.19: 4-6]. The ordination by laying on ofhands is clearly attested to in the apos-tolic preaching [I Tim. 5:22, Heb. 6:2etc.], as is the practice of anointing thesick with oil [James 5: 14-15].

Besides these seven mysteries, we al -so have such sacramental acts as thebles sing of water, the monastic tonsu -re, the funeral service, etc. In all of the -se acts we see a process of offering andreturn—we offer something to God,He accepts it, blesses it, and offers itback to us in a sanctified form. In theEucharist we offer bread and wine,which God returns to us as His Bodyand Blood. In confession we offer ourrepentance. In Anointing of the Sick weoffer our suffering, in Marriage, ourrelationship. In Chrismation and Ord -

Взагалі православні християнифундаментальними вважають сімСвятих Таїнств, а це: Хрещення, Ми -ропомазання, Сповідь, Причастя,Він чання, Священство і Масло свят -тя (соборування). В усіх них бачимобіблійний фундамент.

Перед початком Його проповіду -вання, Ісус був охрещений [Мк.1:9].Після Хрещення Духа Святогоодер жали віруючі [Дії 8:17], що єсутністю Святого Таїнства Миропо -мазання.

Ісус каже до Його апостолів:«Кому гріхи простите,—простятьсяїм, а кому затримаєте,—то затри -

ма ю ться!» [Iв. 20:23] і св. Яків пише:«признавайтесь один перед одним усвоїх прогріхах…» [Як. 5:16]. На Тай -ній Вечері Ісус сказав: «Прийміть,споживайте, це тіло Моє, що за васломається. …Ця чаша—Новий За по -віт у Моїй крові. Це робіть… наспомин про Мене» [І Кор. 11:24; Мт.26:26-28; Iв. 6:51-56], таким чиномособисто встановлюючи Святі Таїн -ства Сповіді і Євхаристії (Причас тя).

У відповідь на запитування фа -ри сеїв, Ісус заявляє, що шлюб міжчоловіком і жінкою є божественнийсоюз [Мт.19:4-6]. Висвята через ру -ко положення є виразно засвідчена вапостольському проповідуванні [1Тим. 5:22, Євр. 6:2 і т.д.] як і прак -тика маслосвяття (єлеєпомазанняхворих) [Як. 5:14-15].

Крім цих сімох Св. Таїнств, митакож маємо священнодійства такіяк освячення води, чернечий пос -триг, похоронні відправи тощо. Вусіх цих діяннях бачимо процеспри ношення-пожертви і повер нен -ня—ми щось жертвуємо Богові, Вінприймає, благословляє і повертаєназад до нас в освяченій формі. ВСв. Євхаристії ми приносимо хліб івино, котрі Бог повертає до нас якЙого Тіло і Кров. У сповіді ми при -носимо наше покаяння, в Єлеєпо -ма занні хворих—приносимо нашістраждання, а в Шлюбі—наші вза -ємостосунки. В миропомазанні йвисвяті ми жертвуємо Богові нашеслужіння. В Хрещенні, чернечомупостризі, в Похороні—посвячуємоабо офіруємо Богові наше життя.

Бог нам пропонує, деякі люди—навіть декотрі, що вважають себе вЦеркві православними христия на -ми «в доброму стані»—просто від -хиляють? Інколи це може бути черезнезнання або неповне розуміння,ін коли через надмірну гордість(«Чо му мені треба сповідатися? Я жне такий поганий! Я набагато кра -щий ніж більшість людей, а цей свя -щеник—хто він такий, щоб казатимені як я повинен жити!»), але в за -гальному це зводиться переважнодо світського або секулярного на -ста влення, яке характеризує нашесуспільство і є введене через фор -ма льну освіту та засобами масовоїін формації.

Отець Олександер Шмеман твер -дить, що секуляризм, це зневажан -ня богопочитання, І ipso facto не хту -вання таїнственного життя (див. ЗаЖиття Світу). Якщо цей світ дій -сно це все, що існує, і якщо все те,що існує справді є результатом слі -пого випадку, (основний міф і при -й нята догма матеріалістично-нау -ко вого встановлення) святість і ос -вячення можуть бути хіба фанта -зією такого рівня як віра у вели код -нього зай чика.

З іншого боку, якщо Бог існує ібажає ділитися з нами Його життямі Його милосердям, участь у СвятихТаїнствах, це є запевнена стежка допізнання і єднання з Ним [Ів. 17:3].Як о. Олександер чітко окреслює,—Церква не володіє ані не творитьсвяті тайни. Церква Є святою тай -ною—свята тайна Божої присут -ноті в світі.

Майже 2000 років віруючі хри -стияни брали участь у Святих Та -їнствах—причому як прості люди,так і геніальні; люди всіх соціальнихстанів; як святі, так і грішники; по

суті люди кожної людської культу -ри, що є під сонцем. Всі ми знаємонауковий метод—запропонованате орема, а тоді проведений дослід.Тут виринає питання для тих, котріякщоб могли, відкинули б Святі Та -їнства Церкви як непотрібне чи необов'язкове—«якщо люди не діс та -вали б користі від участі в СвятихТаїнствах, чому б ця практика під -три мувалася?» Ми маємо за собою2000-ї давності свідчення ефектив -ності і користі Св. Таїнств на зас по -коєння, зцілення і духовного ростутих, котрі є учасниками Святих Та -їнств у вірі.

Бог хоче ділитися з нами Йогоще дрим милосердям і божествен -ним життям, і це творить у Св. Та їн -ствах. Тож приймімо цей дар, ді ля -чись з Ним нашою радістю, на шимсмутком, нашим цілим жит тям.

Це ніколи не припиняється.Коли наближається час Різдваі Воскресіння Христового,зем ний світ шукає прийняти

якісь особливі міри, щоб посіятисумнів у вагомості цих подій, при -водячи до знаку запитання системувірування християн. Це мене, зви -чайно, турбує, проте це є частиноюдару вільної волі, кожному з нас да -ної від Бога. Ми маємо свободу го -ворити те, що хочемо і вірити в те,що хочемо, дивитися на те, що хо -чемо і навіть робити те, що хочемо.Це в рамках цієї свободи, що й зловиконує свою шахрайську працю,вводить в оману.

Злий використовує багато спо -собів, проте найефективніші є хи -тро мудрі, ледь помітні способи. Злоне приходить так запросто і відкри -то каже: «Бог поганий» або «Вашавіра—це абсурд, нісенітниця». Най -частіше він працює у сфері витон -че ності, сіючи сумнів про речі, щоми бачимо і чуємо. Якщо ви малинаго ду читати книжку К. С. Люіса C.S. Lеwis, The Screwtape Letters, а це єсе рія листів, писаних одним злимду хом (сатаною) до іншого, про теяк схилити людину від добра до зла,то побачите, як кожен лист роз гля -дає різноманітні аспекти важкоїпраці людської душі і як диявол за -манює цю душу в свої сіті зла. Вонипо ка зують як зло може просочува -тися в християнські взаємовід но си -ни, в його погляді на церкву, на вітьв йо го застосуванні молитви. Чита -ючи кожен лист бачимо як людина,яку він хоче заманити все більше ібіль ше відбивається від рук дияволаі його спокус. Порада диявола-сень -йора молодшому спокуснику стаєна стирливіша і хитріша.

Ось так, завдяки тому ми при -ходимо до зрозуміння роботи злогов нашому житті. Найчастіше хитро -щі означають, що на нас націленоспо кусу, а отже тому мусимо бутиду же насторожі. Коли опиняємось вситуації, що ставить під сумнів на шувіру, навіть якщо лише на хви лину,ми мусимо реагувати на це, при чомуреагувати дуже швидко. Як ми на цевідповідаємо? Відпові даємо черезмолитву звертаючись до Христа. УСвятому Письмі є стих-уривок, якийописує як саме ми ма ємо діяти в час,коли маємо сум нів або в момент не -довірства. Єван геліє від Марка 9:14-31, воно читається в 4-ту неділю Ве -ликого Посту. В цьо му уривку чоло -вік приходить до Ісуса прохаючи оз -доровити його сина. Коли принеслисина до Хри ста, хлопець дістає кон -вульсії і па дає на землю, випускаючипіну з ро та. Ісус запитує як задовгоце три ває, і батько відповідає, що здитин ства. Він просить Христа зми -лосер дитися і допомогти. Друга час -

ти на важлива тим, бо Ісус каже добатька «якщо ти можеш вірити, то -му, хто вірує, все можливе!». 'Заразба тько хлоп'яти з слізьми закричав ісказав: Вірую Господи,—допоможи не -до вір ству моєму!». І тут Ісус оздо ро -вив хлопця.

Це прохання і молитва батька єважливі. У щоденному житті поба -чимо і почуємо про речі, які до пев -ної міри викликатимуть питаннящодо нашої віри. Кожен з нас мати -ме такі моменти сумніву і недо вір -ства. Це не повинно викликати три -вогу або засмучувати нас, бо всі мигріховнопавше людство. Що повин -но викликати тривогу, так це колими дозволимо нашим сумнівам і не -довірству відібрати від нас нашу ві -ру в Христа. Я чув як єпископи і свя -щеники висловлювалися про мо -мен ти сумніву щодо їхнього віру -ван ня. Навіть найбільші святі істар ці (подвижники, Святі ОтціЦер кви) Церкви мали такі моментисумніву. Це буде ставатися! Але в та -кі моменти вони зверталися до Богаі навчають нас, що й нам треба звер -татися до Бога кажучи: 'Господи, явірю, допоможи мойому недовір ству'.І Св. Письмо навчає, що Бог можедо помогти недовірству. Ми взнає -мо, що єдиний спосіб, за допо -могою якого можна перейги від не -довір ства до вірування, від сумнівудо впевненості—це постійне звер -тан ня до Бога допомогти нам і зці -лити наше недовірство. Свято Різ -два з на ми святкує Бог. Навіть наіконі Різ два, Йосиф віч-на-віч зус -трі ча ється зі злом, яке наміренеспокуси ти його і викликати сумнів інедо вір ство до цієї дивної події. Злоні коли не перестає працювати, алепам'ятаймо, що й Бог ніколи не пе -рестає. Ісус Христос, приходячи донас підносить нашу надію, силу на -шої віри і зціляє нашу слабкість.Си лою зцілення Його прощенняВін допомагає нашому недовірству.

На закінчення, хочу поділитися ізшановними читачами «Вісника»пла нами, що в надходячому 2009ро ці будемо старатися друкуватибільше матеріялу пастирського інавчально-виховного напрямку. Іяк завжди, Вісник радо друкуватиместатті наших ієрархів, духовенства івірних. Надіюся, що сторінки Віс ни -ка зможуть і надалі бути засобомдля Божої праці зцілення в моментинедовірства, в які інколи впадаємо.

It never fails! Around the time of theNativity of Christ and the Re sur rec -tion of Christ, the secular world se -eks to take extra special measures to

cast doubts about the va l idity of theseevents, bringing to question the beliefsystem of the Chris tians. It bothers me,but it is part of the gift of free will thateach of us has been endowed with fromGod. We have the freedom to so say whatwe want and believe what we want,watch what we want and even do whatwe want. It is within this freedom thatevil works its deceptions.

The evil one works in many ways,but the most effective are the subtleways. Evil does not just come out andsay, "God is bad" or "Your faith is ab -surd." Most often it works in the realmof the subtle, by casting doubts aboutthe things we hear and see. If you havethe chance read C. S. Lewis’ book, ‘TheScrewtape Letters’. It is a series of let-ters written from one demon to anoth-er on how to tempt a person from go -od ness towards evil. Each letter looksat various aspects of the travails of thehuman soul and how the devil temptsthat soul toward evil. They show howevil can seep into a Chris tian's rela-tionships, in his views on the church,even in his practice of prayer. As eachletter is read, we find the person target-ed is slipping more and more out ofthe hands of the demon and his temp-tations. The senior demon’s (Screw -tape) advice to the tempter be comesmo re firm and yet more subtle.

Thus through this we come to un -derstand the workings of evil in our lives.It is most often by subtle means that weare tempted and thus must be ever themore wary. When situations are present-ed to us that cause us to doubt our faith,even for a minute, we must respond andrespond quickly. How do we respond?We respond by turning to Christ,through prayer. The re is a passage inScripture that de scribes how we mustcounter times when we have doubt ormoments of unbelief. Mark 9: 14-31, isread on the 4th Sunday of Great Lent. Inthis passage a man comes to Jesus askingthat his son be healed. When they bringthe boy to Christ, the boy convulses andfalls to the ground, foaming at themouth. Christ asks how long this hasbeen happening and the father repliessince childhood. He asks Christ to havemercy and help. The next part is im -portant because Jesus says to the father,"‘If you can believe, all things are possibleto him who believes.’ ‘Im med iat ely thefather of the child cried out and said withtears, ‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’

"With that, Jesus healed the boy.It is the plea and the prayer of the

fa ther that is important. In the courseof daily life we will see things and hearthings that will cause us to question ourfaith to some degree. We all will befaced with moments of doubt and un -belief. This should not be alarming ordisconcerting for us, because we are afallen humanity. What should be al -arm ing is when we allow our doubtsand unbelief to take our faith awayfrom Christ. I have heard bishops andpriests express moments of doubt withregards to their faith. Even the greatestsaints and elders of the church experi-enced moments of doubt. It will hap-pen! But in those moments they calledout to God and so teach us that we needto call out to God and say, ‘Lord, I be -lieve, help my unbelief.’ And Scrip tureshows that God can help our un be lief.We learn that the only way to movefrom unbelief to belief, from doubt tosurety—is to continually call upon Godto help us and heal our un belief. TheFeast of the Nativity celeb rates Godwith us. Even in the icon of the Nativ -ity, Joseph is confronted by evil, tempt-ing him to doubt and unbelief of themiraculous event. Evil never ceases towork but neither does God. In comingto us, Jesus Christ lifts our hope, streng -thens our faith and heals our broken-ness. Through the healing power of Hisforgiveness He helps our unbelief.

In closing, I want to share with thereadership that for the upcoming year,‘Visnyk’ will seek to include more arti-cles that have a pastoral and education-al focus. As always, ‘Visnyk’ is ready toconsider publishing reflections andarticles from our hierarchs, clergy andfaithful. It is my hope that the pages of‘Visnyk’ can continue to be a meansthrough which God works to help healthe moments of unbelief we some-times encounter.

When visiting a cemetery, lo -ok ing down upon the tomb-stones, it is not the birth dateor the date one dies that

mat ters, but it is the "dash" betweenthese dates that should receive our at -tention. It is what we do with the timewe’ve been given and how we use ourheartbeats. "The dash" is what trulymat ters.

Jesus Christ, our Savior, came to bewith us to make life matter. Jesus cameto take on our flesh, to carry our bur-

dens, to be crucified and resurrectedfor our sake—to show us the way toHis Kingdom. He taught lessons oflove, peace, and faith. He taught us tobelieve in miracles and believe in re -storing our relationship with our Fa -ther in heaven. At the start of this NewYear, we, His faithful, have a wonderfulopportunity to awaken our hearts andminds to this reality!

However, the Lord our God, sent HisHoly Spirit to remind us who we trulyare, His beloved sons and daughterscreated in His image. He came to re -store us to our original beauty. He ca -me to transform your life and mine sowe can become compassionate, living alife of prayer as a humble example toothers. Let us begin 2009 by re newingour commitment to walk with Christand serve others.

I am continually comforted know-ing that we believe in a merciful God

who is, above all other things, a Godwho loves. He is a God who wants tomake every person a new person toshine His light and glory in this world.He is a God who desires that His be -loved children become ‘vessels of theHoly Spirit,’ partakers of divine nature—accepting love from our Lord.

This love is a free gift. Since it is agift, we must receive it with an openheart! To receive this precious gift oflove, we must humbly allow God’spresence in our lives. We must makeevery effort to attend services, praydaily and seek Him in all that we do.

Now is the time for us His faithful to"wake up" and seek God’s mercy, peace,and love. As we make our new year’sresolutions, let us prioritize focusingon the transformation of our souls anddeepening our relationship with God.This will take effort, commitment andtime. Remember, all that matters is

what we do in "the dash" of our lives.As we move throughout the year, let

us become filled with every virtue inChrist. Respectively, let us be a churchcommunity that reflects the "salt of theearth," or the "light on a hill," and the"comfort to the poor and needy."

Over the year we will ask the Lord,to give us the humility to accept Hisgifts of love, mercy, and selflessness andso we can freely share them with oth-ers. May our Lord help us this yearwith His sacred assignment to love oneanother! Відвідуючи цвинтарі і огляда -ючи надмогильні плити чипам’ятники, го ловним длянас по винні бути не дати на -

род жен ня чи дати смерті, нашу ува -гу по винна при вер тати лише корот -ка «риска» між ти ми двома датами.Це є показник як ми використалисвій даний нам час, як ми вико ри -стали биття наших сердець. Саме ця«рис ка» має велике значення.

Ісус Христос, наш Спаситель,при йшов, щоб бути з нами, щобжиття мало значимість. Він прий -шов прийняти наше тіло, нести на -ші тягарі, бути розп'ятим і вос крес -нути задля нас—показати нам до -ро гу до Його Царства. Він дав намуроки любові, миру і віри. Він вчивнас вірити в чуда і вірити у від нов -лення наших взаємостосунків з на -шим Отцем, що в небі. З початком

нового року ми, Його вірні бого мо -льці, маємо чудову нагоду розбу ди -ти свої серця і розум до цієї дійс но -сті!

Незважаючи на це, Господь нашБог, післав Його Святого Духа при -гадати нам хто ми є, Його улюбленісини і дочки сотворені на Його по -добу. Він прийшов, щоб відновитинас до нашої первинної краси. Вінприйшов перетворити наше з вамижиття, щоб ми могли стати спів чут -ливими, жити молитовним життям,бути прикладом смиренності дляінших. Тож починаймо 2009 рік по -новленням наших зобов'язань іти зХристом і слугувати іншим.

Моя душа безнастанно заспоко -юється знаючи, що ми віримо в ми -лосердного Бога, Котрий є понадусіма речами. Бога, Котрий любить.Він є Бог, Котрий хоче зробити

кожну людину новою особою, щобвона випромінювалася Його світ -лом і славою в цьому світі. Він є Бог,Котрий бажає, щоб Його улюбленідіти, приймаючи любов від нашогоГоспода ставали 'посудинами ДухаСвятого', частинками божественноїприроди.

Ця любов—є вільний дар. Оскі -ль ки це є дар, то ми повинні отри -мувати його з відкритим серцем!Щоб отримати цей неоціненний дарлюбові, ми повинні смиренно доз -волити Божій присутності бути внашому житті. Ми повинні зробитикожне можливе зусилля бути при -сутнім на богослужбі, щоденно мо -литися і шукати Його в усій нашійдіяль но сті.

Тепер якраз настав час для нас,Його вірних, 'проснутися' і шукатиБожого милосердя, миру і любові.Приймаючи новорічні зобов'я зан -ня, нехай нашим головним пріо ри -тетом буде трансформація нашихдуш і поглиблення нашого вза ємо -зв'язку з Богом. Для цього потрібнінамаган ня, зобов'язання і час. Па -м'я таймо, що вся суть нашої діяль -

ності заклю чається в тому мале нь -кому проміж ку між датами, тобто уцій «рисці» нашого життя, іншимисловами, які діла ця риска репре зен -тує.

Тож, починаючи цей рік напов -нюй мося чеснотами в Христі. Будь -мо церковною громадою, яка від -дзеркаює «сіль землі» чи «світло нагорі» та «притулок для бідних і по -тре буючих». Протягом року будемопросити Господа, щоб подав намсмиренності прийняти Його дарилюбові, милосердя і бескорисли во -сті, щоб ними ми могли ділитися зіншими. Нехай Господь допоможенам в цьому році даючи нам Йогосвяте завдання любити один одно -го! Читаю часто слова активістаМар ти на Лютера Кінга на карточці-мемо, прикріпленій до мого пись -мо вого столу, котрий дуже розумносказав, що «любов не є відповідь,а—при значення». Отож, в надходя -чому Новому Році пробуджуймосякож ного ранку з наставленням, щолю бов—це наше призначення, на -ше завдання.

Три Голодомори, репресії, війна мали стати для Тебе, український наро -де, спонукою для духовного очищення, морального вдосконалення, по вер -нення до прабатьківської християнської традиції з її власною Церквою тавнутрішньою християнською духовністю, а не принесеною зовнішньою,формальною християнськістю, що межує з обрядопоклонінням. І наш ві -зит до Києва на святкування 1020-ліття Хрещення України-Руси показавнам справжніх синів і дочок Української Церкви, які моляться до Бога, а недо людини, навіть якщо вона посідає високе становище. Ми побачили, щонавіть жахи XX століття не зламали хребта нації, не зробили з українця ра -ба й слухняного виконавця чужих намірів.

Закликаю всіх повернутися обличчям до Києва, до українських ду хов -них—релігійних і культурних—святинь, до українського народу: в усіх,народжених в Україні, одна мати—Україна, якій усі без винятку мають слу -жити: і наділений владою, і «маленький» громадянин. Згадайте слова Спа -сителя: «Кожне царство, поділене супроти себе, запустіє. І кожне місто чидім, поділені супроти себе, не втримаються» [Мт. 12: 25].

Дорогі українці! Ваше минуле—чи радісне, переможне, чи сумне й тра -гіч не, а особливо Голодомор—завжди буде з вами, навіть коли ви нама га -тиметеся забути, применшити чи спотворити його на догоду сусідам. Васстосуються слова Апостола Павла: «Браття, кожен із вас, вякім стані по кли -каний був, хай у тім перед Богом лишається!» [І Кор. 7:24]. Ваше по кли -

кання—бути добрими християнами в давній українській церковній тра ди -ції й громадянами України, а також одностайно свідчити перед світом протрагедії українського народу у XX ст., особливо про Великий Голодомор1932-1933 років. Це Ваш обов'язок перед пам'яттю своїх прадідів, дідів і ба -тьків, бо в світовій історії за весь час існування людства не було такої тра -гедії, щоби за один мирний рік знищити більше людей однієї нації, ніж бу -ло знищено за кілька років війни. І хто що б не говорив, як би не намагавсяприменшити зло, це явна ознака геноциду.

У дні вшанування пам'ятіжертв Великого Голодомору 1932-1933 pp., особливо у його 75-ту річницю,ваша Материнська Церква—Вселенський Константинопольський Патрі -архат сумує разом із вами і складає глибоке та щире співчуття усім вам іПре зидентові України п. В. Ющенку, репрезентантові України перед сві -том, через наполегливі старання якого світ щораз більше довідується прострашну трагедію українців у XX ст. Ми підносимо до Господа нашого ІсусаХриста наші молитви й просимо, щоби Всеблагий Спаситель упокоїв душівсіх замордованих Голодом в оселях святих і прийняв їх до сонму СвоїхМу чеників як невинно убитих. During these busy and challeng-ing weeks that precede the cele-bration of Christ's Nativity, it'sdifficult for the faithful Ortho -

dox to have a connection to the realthings that we celebrate. Not only doour schedules fill up with commit-ments for work, school and familythere are the extra errands to preparefor and receive guests. The time we mayspend in prayer, or even in church, getspushed aside for more pressing andurgent matters. This is also the oppor-tunity that the adversary uses to keepour minds in a state of anxiety andaggravation. While we journey throughthe fast and come spiritually closer toBethlehem our souls, through neglectand temptation, can lose their sense ofconnection to God and salvation. It isat this time we must redouble ourefforts and renew a commitment toChrist. The Nativity Icon is an idealplace to seek reconnection.

The Nativity Icon is for the Ortho -dox an object to instruct and reassureus, as well as a source of strength.There's a lot going on in this icon. Itnormally contains a series of scenes orvignettes all relating to the Scripturalreferences of the birth of Jesus. This isthe first signal for us to remember aswe look upon this icon with a sense ofprayer. Pick up your Bible! Start look-ing up and reading all the scripturalreferences that you can find there. Thenew Orthodox Study Bible is an idealreference tool here. Also, look up the

many Old Testament prophecies andPsalms referred to in the Bible.

Holding Scripture in your hand andreferring to it, rather than to the manytemptations and distractions of thisworld, is a powerful and meaningfulstep. It cannot be stressed often enoughthat this action is one of the single mosteffective ways to withstand and to sus-tain in the stormy "tempest of tempta-tions" hurled against us at this time ofyear. So PICK UP YOUR BIBLE ANDREAD IT this day!

Looking at the Icon, consider the fig-ure of St. Joseph near the bottom of theicon. Often you will see him depictedwith his head bowed over, as if in con-sternation or frustration. Considerwhat this poor man has been goingthrough! He's having very unusualdreams, being instructed by angels togo here and to do this and he doesn'treally understand why. His wife Mary ispregnant, and he is not the father. Thisis the young woman who lived in thetemple, living a life of prayer and puri-ty. Now she's pregnant! There's the tripto Bethlehem for the census, and thenthe joy of paying taxes. And that's justthe beginning. So salvation comes tothe form of what we call a "dysfunc-tional family." And yet Joseph perse-veres. He stays connected and centered,even though he is in tremendous diffi-culty.

And who is, in many icons, the oldman (notice that there is no halo)speaking to him? What things does hesay to Joseph? This is the voice ofdoubt, suspicion, temptation, aggrava-tion. It's the voice of self-righteousnessand cynicism. It's the voice that raiseshackles and seeks to defeat patienceand understanding. It's the voice thaturges us to lash out in anger or toshrink away from doing what's rightand stay in the easy temptation of bad

habits.Temptation and the inclination to

sin is with us. And what a way to thinkof it. When we say one is "inclined" tosin that means we're not on level orsecure ground. It may be a familiarthing but it is the slant downward andaway from the light (of hope, of Beth -lehem, indeed of salvation) that wemust be vigilant to climb up and awayfrom.

The shepherds, frightened by hear-ing the songs of Angels are curious asto what's going on. The wise men,travelling a great distance, stay focusedon the goal of finding the child told ofin prophesy. They do not fall into theavarice and greed of Herod's lust forpower. While the King of Judea is cred-ited now with building many greatcities and buildings, it is his lust forpower and fear of a challenger to hisplace of authority that drives him tomurder. The ruins of his castles are

there for us to visit. Let us remember,however, that the ruin caused by ahardened heart will not just be the his-toric footnote. Herod's madness led tothe death of many innocents. Thisman's potential and power, and howhe used it, is an object less for all whomay have responsibility (whethersmall or large) for others.

This is but the small sample of themany things we can learn from anddraw strength as individuals and com-munity from this miraculous icon.There is much more to learn from andabout each portion of this and otherFeast Day Icons. Praying with it andbefore it drives away the tempters andputs our soul's and body's feet uponfirm and level ground. May we,through the grace of the newly-born inthe flesh Son of God, find strength andcomfort in these days so that we mayfind life with Christ in the next life.

GLORIFY HIM! The mystery of the eternity of God and the greatness of our "all knowing" God is that He

sees all things in the present tense. God sees and knows all things past, present and future now.Thus, the Incarnation of the Logos is seen together and experienced together with all of theother major feasts of Christ in the Church. The Resurrection would have no meaning withoutthe Incarnation and the Incarnation would have no meaning without the resurrection.

This is the reason we celebrate the present Nativity of Christ! We presently are preparing,through advent, the news of the coming of the Lord into the Cosmos and are anticipating thehistorical event which has happened yet is happening and will eternally be happening. Humanbeings separate the feasts into separate events to study, know and celebrate their content, how-ever, the present reality always brings us into continual contact with our beloved Lord and Sa-vior Jesus Christ. Today we sing and herald in the eternal arrival of our God in the flesh andwe shall eternally contemplate the mystery of this event! the feast of the Nativity in the flesh ofour Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ brings to heart a feeling of awesome renewal. The anticipa-tion of the desired arrival of the Messiah, Emmanuel, has now taken place and our beings areat the same time silent with awe and anxious about what this will mean for our future. The ef -fect is a heavenly peace, tranquility and comfort, which comes upon us like the loving feelingof a parent’s arms wrapped around us in a gesture of pure loving protection. Christ is amongus and will ever be amongst His children.

On November 30, 2008, hierar-chs, clergy and faithful fromacross Canada gathered at theUk rainian Orthodox Metro po -

litan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity inWinnipeg MB to celebrate the 25thAn niversary of Episcopal Consecrationof His Eminence Metropolitan JOHN(Stinka).

Metropolitan John was born in 1935in Buchanan, Saskatchewan, the young -est of 12 children to Nikolaj and AnnieStinka. His Eminence was en throned inNovember of 2005 as the 5th Metro -politan for the Ukrainian OrthodoxChurch of Canada.

The Divine Liturgy was presidedover by no less than 6 hierarchs: Me -tropolitan John, Ukrainian OrthodoxChurch of Canada (UOCC); Archbi -shop Nathaniel, Romanian OrthodoxEpiscopate of America; ArchbishopAntony, Ukrainian Orthodox Churchof the USA; Archbishop Yurij, EasternEparchy of the UOCC; Bishop Ilarion,Western Eparchy of the UOCC; BishopAndriy, Bishop-elect of Saskatoon andVicar of the Central Eparchy.

V. Rev. Archpriest Gregory Mielnik,Chancellor of the Presidium of theConsistory Board of the UOCC, beganthe program by calling upon Metro -politan Soterios to bring greetings. HisEminence greeted Metropolitan Johnin the name of the Ecumenical Patri -arch, Bartholomew I, and highlightedthe historical bond and respect thatthere is between Greeks and Ukrain -ians. Rev. Doug Martindale, representa-tive of the Manitoba Government, ac -knowledged how God’s Spirit has guid -ed His Eminence. He presented a pic-torial book to His Eminence represent-ing the ‘Spirit of Manitoba’. Vic Toews,representing the Federal Gov ernment,expressed his gratitude for being partof this event and remarked how politi-cians must come together to decidewhat is best for the country and as suchhow the Church continues to cometogether to work for what is best forthe faithful. Sonja Bezjyk, National CYCpresident, brought greetings on behalfof all the member organizations of CYC.She highlighted that CYC is an integralpart of the UOCC and re mains to becommitted to the church.

His Eminence, Archbishop Yurij wasinvited to offer the main address aboutthe guest of honour. His Eminencestated that Metropolitan John is a true‘son of the soil’ and from the cradle hasbeen part of the church family and Uk -rainian community.

On November 10th, 2008 the Winnipeg Deanery and the WinnipegChapter of the Order of St. Andrew’s co-hosted an Acolyte AppreciationEvening for altar boys from the various parishes in Winnipeg. Clergy,altar boys and family gathered at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan

Cathedral of the Holy Trinity for the event.His Eminence, Metropolitan John, with assisting clergy, served a Moleben’ for

the altar boys following which a group photo was taken. Everyone proceeded tothe Cathedral Auditorium for supper and a certificate presentation ceremony.The supper was supplied by the local chapter of the Order of St. Andrew’s. Fol -lowing the supper, His Eminence gave the keynote address. After this, the boyswere called up individually to receive their certificates and a blessing fromMetropolitan John.

The evening was enjoyed by all gathered and will continue to be an annualtradition in the life of the Ukrainian Orthodox church community.

Rev. Fr. Deacon Thomas was born in 1968 toVictor and Helen Chaput of Winnipeg, Mani -toba, Canada. He has one younger brotherDa niel. Deacon Thomas spent the majority of

his life growing up in East Kildonan graduating highschool from River East Collegiate. Throughout hischildhood as well as a young adult, he was involved inmany cultural, athletic and religious activities. Heattended Ukrainian School at the Ukrainian NationalFederation, danced at UNF and graduated to the Or -lan Ukrainian Folk Ensemble. He attended visual artclasses at the Katerina Antonovitch School of Art.Athletically, he participated in hockey, both indoorand outdoor soccer, mountain and road biking aswell as swimming earning a bronze cross and bronzemedallion lifesaving medals. His religious upbring-ing began at an early age at St. Andrew’s UkrainianCa tholic Church. He completed the prescribed pro-gram of study through Catechism classes and wasvery active as an altar boy (thirteen years). The high-light of his career as an altar boy culminated in serv-ing Pope John Paul II at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ca -the dral in Winnipeg, during his tour of Canada.

Upon graduation of high school, he was acceptedto the University of Manitoba in the School of FineArt in pursuit of a Bachelor of Fine Art in GraphicDe sign. During university he continued with his cul-tural and athletic pursuits as well as his religioustraining. With the Orlan Ukrainian Folk Ensemble,

he had the opportunity to travel and perform aroundthe world and most importantly in Lviv, Ukraine atthe Lviv Opera House.

Upon completion of his Bachelor of Fine Art inGra phic Design–BFA (GD), he re-applied to theSchool of Fine Art and was accepted to the programof Bachelor of Fine Art (Art History) and graduatedwith a BFA (AH).

Following his graduation from University, heapplied to Red River College and was accepted to theDiploma program in Graphic Design. He was thenhired by the Brown Communications Group in Win -nipeg as a Junior Designer. Over the next five years heworked as a graphic designer, art director and leaddesigner at various agencies around the city, winningvarious local, national and international awards. Hisdesign career culminated in the position of CreativeDirector at Manitoba Hydro. He continues to main-tain a freelance design business as a graphic designer.

In 1997, he met Nadia, daughter of the Rt. Rev. Dr.Oleh and Dobr. Maria Krawchenko. On May 15, 1999they were married at Holy Trinity Metropolitan Ca -thedral. Before their marriage he made the decisionto join the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He spentmuch time in research and reflection before makingthis very important decision in his life. He realized hewould make a decision that would change his life andand with that "came home" to the Ortho dox Churchat Holy Trinity Metropolitan Cathedral, with thebles s ing of his family and Nadia at his side.

In 2001, he made another decision that would alterthe course of his life. He longed for a career change,one that would challenge him both mentally andphysically. That choice was the Canadian Forces. InSeptember of 2001 he was enrolled in the Forces as aSecond Lieutenant and spent two months in St. Jean,Quebec in Basic Training. The experience with theForces gave him many new skills in the areas ofadministration both of people and finances as well aslife skills in survival in the outdoors. During his te -nure in the Canadian Forces another life alteringevent occurred—the birth of their twin daughters,Tamara and Oksana Chaput. At this point, the desireand need to be at home with family and to maintainour traditional roots in Winnipeg led him to releasefrom the Forces and move back to Winnipeg.

Once back in Winnipeg, he decided to go back toschool and decided to apply for and was accepted tothe Faculty of Education at the University of Mani -toba. He graduated with Distinction in 2006 with aBachelor of Education—Senior Years Stream (BEd–SY). He was immediately hired by the Win nipegSchool Division and now is the Visual Arts Spe cialistat Andrew Mynarski VC Junior High School in Win -

nipeg. He is currently working on his Master of Edu -cation in Educational Administration at the Uni ver -sity of Manitoba.

While attending Holy Trinity Cathedral he devel-oped an interest in pursuing the study of Theology.Under the advisement of Fr. O. Krawchenko, he ap -plied to and was accepted to the Faculty of Theologyat St. Andrew’s College. Upon completion of his firstcourse he realized he had encountered an awakeninginside of how much he enjoyed studying Theology.

Fr. Thomas has prepared for seven years academ-ically, personally, mentally, spiritually and mostimportantly, theologically, in order to make the deci-sion to apply for ordination.

On September 14th 2008, he was ordained by Me -tro politan John to the Holy Diaconate. The familyattends St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Churchwhere he served as Sub-deacon with Fr. John Melnyk.The family has been active within the life and com-munity of the church. Dobr. Nadia teaches gradeeight in the River East Transcona School Division.Fr. Deacon Thomas is continuing his Theologicalstu dies with the goal of graduating with a Masters ofDivinity in Christian Education or Church History.

In attendance we re members of the College Board of Directors, the Orderof St. Andrew Ho nour Guard, the College academic, ad ministrative and sup-portstaff and students as well many guests from Win nipeg and beyond.

The St. Mary the Protectress Sobor Parish Choir, under the direction of Mrs.Irene Melnyk, enchanced the Div ine Liturgy with their beautiful sing ing.

The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was followed by a memorial service for thedeparted members,benefactors, ad ministrative/academic staff and students whohave fallen asleep in the Lord.

Following the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, everyone was invited to partake ofa delicious Luncheon and Pro gram during which the College Chan cellor, HisEminence Metropolitan JOHN, greeted everyone in attendance and providedsincere pastoral words of encouragement to all those responsible for St. An -drew's College and her supporters.

Newly ordained Deacon Yuriy Su chevan gave an interesting and informativepresentation about St. Andrew the First Called Apostle.

The Annual General Meeting of the Members of St. Andrew's College fol-lowed the Feast Day Luncheon and Pro gram.

But he directed the wise men toBethle hem with a promise that theywould return and tell him all aboutthe new king. We know from theBible story that God spoke to themin a dream and told them to returnhome another way.

«And when they had openedtheir treasures they presented untohim gifts: gold, frankincense andmyrrh» [Matt. 2:11]

Gift giving has been practicedfrom time eternal. The gift of Goldwas an offering fit for a King as these wise men believed Jesuswas.

The use of Frankincense goes back to the Old Testament. It hasalways been used for worship purposes. Moses was told by God tomake an altar for the burning of incense.It has been used in ourchurches from the beginning of the Christian church. When yousee smoke rising from the censor it symbolizes the prayers andpraises of the faithful ascending into heaven.

Myrrh is used in baptisms when the priest, after reciting theConfirmation prayer, anoints the newly baptized with the HolyChrism making the sign of the cross on his/her brow, eyes, nostrils,lips, ears, hands and feet.

These gifts then had important significance: Gold for Christ theKing, Frankincense for Christ the Priest, Myrrh—for the annointingof Christ, the Sacrifice. On Sviat Vechir as you sing the koliady payspecial attention to the story in the lyrics.

THE HERALDJanuary 2009

O ne of my favourite bible verses is John 3:16 “For God soloved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, thatwhosoever believes in Him should not perish but haveeverlasting life.”

What an ultimate and everlasting gift God has given us. At thistime of the year when we celebrate His birth our inclinations aretoward sharing, also. By now St. Nicholas has made his visit andwe have exchanged gifts with family and friends and perhaps havereally shared some of our blessings with those who are needy andhungry. The Christmas carols have stopped blaring in the storesand we can get to the business of observing the birth of Christ inour solemn Ukrainian way. How many times in the last two monthshave you heard the carol “We three Kings of Orient Are”? On SviatVechir we will be joyfully singing it in Ukrainian.

The Bible mentions these kings in the book of Matthew wherethey are called magi or wise men. Who were these “Wise Men”?Some sources tell us that they were from a clan of Medes whoformed the priestly class in Persia which is now Iran. They wereprofessional practitioners of Astrology.

One night when these astrologers were studying the stars in theheavens they noticed that a new one had appeared. It was a bigstar, shining more brightly than all the others. As they looked at it inwonder they concluded that it was a sign that a child must havebeen born somewhere, a very important and wealthy child. Theydecided to go and find this royal child.
