Chair’s welcome

Hearty congratulations to the finalists and winners at this year’s World Procurement Awards. This prestigious event brings together the brightest and most exceptional talent in the procurement function.

The competition was tough again this year. Our panel of 23 industry leaders had a challenging job assessing the high-quality entries, narrowing hundreds of excellent nominations to 19 winners. This required critical debates and difficult choices. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our panel of judges for their time and contributions, which were invaluable to the integrity of the awards process.

The winning entries showcase how the profession is evolving with new, forward-thinking innovations that are bringing meaningful value to organisations.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to our partners for their continued support. They are instrumental in collaborating with us to make this the most recognised and prestigious evening in the procurement calendar.

Congratulations again – it is a privilege to host you all this evening.

Looking to the future

We are tremendously thankful for the time and effort of our board of judges, without whom the World Procurement Awards would not be possible.

We take great pride in the rigour and individuality of not just our entry process, but the judging process in general. As the awards have evolved and expanded, the judging system used to determine those who have demonstrated a true commitment to delivering world-class performance has become more focused than ever. We use a four-stage entry process, which concentrates on each entrant’s achievements and challenges, reflecting the amazing work procurement does across all geographies and industries:l Stage 1 asks entrants to provide

some background on their company and a brief synopsis of the entry.

l Stage 2 allows entrants to pitch their

achievements to the judges, guided by a short series of questions.

l Stage 3 enables entrants to add more detail, the methodology and context in which their achievements were accomplished.

l Stage 4 is the point at which entrants upload supporting materials to evidence what they have been writing about in their entry. After these four steps are

completed, the judging process begins. Feedback forms are the foundation of our approach and it is clear that you, like us, believe transparency is paramount. Awards stand or fall on the honesty of the judging and the application of its standards. Each year, our team meticulously evaluates the process and speaks to our community to ensure our emphasis still reflects the overarching aims and ambitions of the procurement community.

Taking that into account, we continuously revise a judging system which is based on three clear goals:l To appoint a globally recognised

panel of judges.l To create representative and

coherent criteria.l To guarantee an independent,

transparent and rigorous process. As a result, we use a three-stage

methodology that comprises scoring, peer reviewing and face-to-face judging days. This enables us to discuss our shortlist and ultimately decide the winners, with input from our regional chairs and global chair of judges. Given the extraordinary quality of the entries, this is a difficult process. Therefore, the judges are given the chance to highly commend some entries.

Our commitment to awarding world-class performance, like that of our entrants, remains undimmed.

THE GEP PROCUREMENT TEAM AWARD

“A previous culture of long working hours has been completely replaced by one in which staff now feel empowered and, crucially, are proud of their working environment”

Beginning in 2014, the programme has delivered a platform for excellence by introducing initiatives such as flexible working to create a team that is both highly motivated and capable of tackling whatever challenges come its way.

The company’s corporate policy pledges to ‘pursue the material and intellectual growth of all our employees’, and the procurement function has played a critical role in ensuring this happens. A previous culture of long working hours has been completely replaced by one in which staff now feel empowered and, crucially, are proud of their working environment. A win-win in every sense.

The airline giant styles itself on being the ‘Wings of Japan’ – but in the past four years, it is procurement that has taken flight. The company regularly flies more than 40 million passengers to 127 domestic and 54 international destinations, with its fleet of 227 aircraft.

That’s a huge workload and one that reflects the need for a high-performing procurement organisation to facilitate it. That is undeniably what Japan Airlines now has.

Thanks to the company’s WorkStyle Innovation (Program), Japan Airlines has, in its own words, succeeded in its aim of ‘reinventing procurement through work culture change’.

to make the complex things simple. That’s a priceless attribute Aucamp has demonstrated time and again.

Being thrown in at the deep end makes no difference to his approach or attitude. Indeed, the more challenging the environment, the more he appears to thrive and succeed. Whether its building relationships with stakeholders or dealing with tricky supplier negotiations, Aucamp is comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

And there is clearly much more to come from him, with his career still in its relative infancy. One thing, though, isn’t in doubt – our judges concurred that BAT and procurement at large are lucky to claim him as their own.

The success and standing of any procurement organisation is almost entirely dependent on those who lead it – and one of the world’s largest tobacco companies boasts one of the brightest young stars in the industry.

Carel Aucamp began his career at British American Tobacco (BAT) in South Africa in 2008 and was quickly identified as an outstanding prospect. Over the past decade, he has graduated from being a sourcing manager - starting as a key player in a joint venture between BAT and AB InBev – to being one of the company’s most outstanding global category managers.

“Procurement at BMS is now ideally placed to deliver value and mitigate risk in the wider business”

not simply a valued business partner, but to also bring innovation to the table and enable the business to deliver strategic priorities.

Based on three guiding principles – focus, simplification and integration – the procurement team was charged with eliminating low-value tasks. This increased procurement’s strategic impact and benefitted both the function and internal stakeholders. Coupled with a technology platform that enabled a far superior buying experience, procurement at BMS is now ideally placed to deliver value and mitigate risk in the wider business.

It’s a transformation process that is already delivering, with the promise of far more to come.

Keeping things simple in an extremely complex world remains one of the key challenges for businesses across the globe.

At biopharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS), it is one that has been met head on by the procurement team. In 2016, BMS embarked on a quest to simplify its processes by reducing operating expenses and increasing collaboration with key business partners.

The aim was to improve the user experiences of services delivered to the business, while expanding the company’s supplier relationship management programme.

Fundamental to its success was the role played by procurement and the need for the function to become

significant challenge. A full end-to-end transformation has seen procurement shift from a back-office, transactional-support function, to an organisation that is now global, strategic and hugely trusted within the wider business.

It has been an astonishing process and one that has left procurement perfectly placed to influence and shape the company’s future. It’s also one that would not have been possible without tireless dedication to cross-functional collaboration across Takeda’s business units – all of which have been positively impacted by procurement’s expansion and new-found focus.

Our judges believed in this very modern vision, in a company formed more than 200 years ago.

When transformation projects are launched, it can often be hard to ensure consumers or, in this instance, patients, remain the focus. The end result, though, has to deliver more than just improvements to the bottom line or budgets – it has to improve the lives of those who need it most.

Nowhere has this been better demonstrated than at one of Japan’s most historic and prestigious pharmaceutical companies. Fuelled by recent acquisitions, Takeda has driven huge improvements in the treatment of diseases during the past decade and made massive strides in areas such as gastroenterology and neuroscience.

Ensuring its procurement operation keeps pace has been a

“The procurement organisation is now viewed as a fundamental element of the company’s overall success and an internal business partner that is delivering value”

Raise your glasspipeline of talent that has left the company well-placed to maximise opportunities both now and in the future.

The process was further aided by the launch of low-cost regional operating centres in Mexico, Hungary and India, which helped to improve the company’s efficiency and effectiveness.

As a result of these changes, the procurement organisation is now viewed as a fundamental element of the company’s overall success and an internal business partner that is delivering value in every sense of the word.

The transformation has helped deliver outstanding results during the past five years.

A global leader in glass and ceramics science and optical physics, Corning Incorporated is constantly innovating to stay ahead of the competition – and now the company’s procurement organisation is viewed as a key strategic cornerstone in ensuring that continues.

Following a transformation project that commenced in 2012, Corning’s procurement function exemplifies what happens when an organisation goes from good to great.

Thanks to the expansion of its services and capabilities through the formation of supply management service companies in Switzerland and Singapore, Corning has established a

The aim of this shift was to place procurement at the heart of the business – creating a function capable of influencing and shaping the company’s short- and long-term future.

This, of course, could never be achieved without the right people. Community Hubs, based in nine countries, aided this process greatly by providing employees with a platform for career progression and the opportunity to work on cross-functional projects. This not only helped Mondelēz to attract top talent, it also meant that its current staff were given every chance to develop.

Our judges concurred that it was talent management at its very best.

The phrase ‘people are our priority’ is the mantra that governs Mondelēz International’s approach to talent management – and it’s one that shines through in everything the company’s procurement organisation does.

With net revenues of $26bn, the multinational confectionery, food and beverage company is a giant in every sense. But its size doesn’t preclude it treating everyone in its procurement function as an individual. Procurement at the US-headquartered business has undergone a significant shift during the past three years, with the function moving from a structure of generalists to a team of highly effective subject-matter experts.

It is also generating more income for buyers and delivering more early payments to suppliers. In short, it’s a solution that appears ideally tailored for the current business environment.

One senior procurement professional in the pharmaceutical industry claims the technology has already revolutionised the way in which their organisation does business. Our judges clearly agree.

Technology has always played a key role in procurement’s success, but occasionally an innovation comes along that turns the marketplace on its head. That’s certainly the case with C2FO’s dynamic discounting.

The financial technology company recognises the importance of working capital in the modern business era and the impact it can have across the supply chain. With customers in more than 100 countries, C2FO is making a genuine difference to companies across the globe.

Using a three-tier model that involves transformation, sourcing, category management, and P2P, GEP’s partnership with the company has placed the emphasis firmly on value, improving visibility and helping to simplify transactional processes.

The results, from our judges’ perspective, are already clear to see.

Long regarded as a leader in the procure-to-pay (P2P) space, GEP’s innovative source-to-pay (S2P) solutions have recently been utilised by one customer in a ground-breaking project that has helped the client company take a significant stride forward.

Working with GEP on its end-to-end S2P services, the US-headquartered organisation has utilised the procurement consulting and transformation specialist’s offering to the full and not simply achieved savings, but also delivered value and optimised its operations in one of the world’s most competitive business environments.

Winner: GSK

As ever, with a project of this nature, procurement needed company-wide support to make it work. This is why the team worked closely with a number of internal departments – including legal, finance, tax and IT – as well as 72 factories and more than 1,700 suppliers around the world.

This work has not gone unnoticed, with procurement’s performance management process now recognised as the benchmark for performance management within the business’s wider operations.

That’s the ultimate pat on the back for the function and just one reason why our judges believed this supply chain initiative put GSK ahead of the pack.

The London-based healthcare giant employs more than 100,000 people in more than 150 countries. But size is no guarantee of success and in order to maintain its competitive edge in one of the world’s most competitive industries, GSK embarked on the largest single programme of inventory reduction in its history.

It has been hugely successful, with inventory reduced by a staggering 35%, leading to a substantial increase in working capital. Key to this achievement was the work of the global procurement team, which created new capabilities within the company’s supply chain, as well as new in-house processes and a new IT support platform.

Winner: Intel Corporation

Recognising the of danger modern slavery, Intel used its position as a worldwide influencer, to develop a plan for its own supply chain and then went one stage further – bringing together a global industry coalition and persuading other technology companies to join the fight.

It’s not just its battle against modern slavery where Intel is making huge and impressive strides.

The US tech giant is investing huge sums to improve diversity across its supply chain and is committing to spending $1bn annually with diverse-owned businesses by 2020. While other firms have since launched similar schemes, the judges recognised Intel leads the way.

Corporate social responsibility has long been viewed as a vital element of any procurement strategy. Few, though, succeed in integrating it into the very fabric of the company’s operations.

But that is just what global technology leader Intel Corporation has achieved, coming out on top in a category that has become synonymous with ground-breaking excellence over the past decade.

The impact of modern slavery has been writ large across the world in recent years and has had a huge impact on the way companies operate and manage their supply chains. Not many other firms, however, have taken the lead in the same way as Intel.

and stakeholder value. It was a comprehensive and detailed plan – and it needed to be. A 40-minute shutdown on one car-manufacturing line in 2017 reportedly cost one automaker more than $1m while a severe supply chain disruption could result in far greater losses.

Brose worked tirelessly to identify the 25 risk categories most relevant to its supply chain, with a global team evaluating thousands of historical and future risk events. This enabled the company to build a complete picture of threats and meant the lessons of the past could be put to the best possible use in the future.

Risk is going nowhere, but Brose is ready.

As the world’s fifth-largest automotive supplier, Brose is acutely aware of the numerous risks that have, in the past decade, threatened to affect the industry.

There are few companies, however, that are as well prepared to deal with these challenges. Thanks to the development of a holistic and systematic approach, Brose’s ARGOS – named after the hundred-eyed giant in Greek mythology – procurement is now ideally placed to not just identify risk, but also deal with it head on.

The ARGOS project aimed to create a world-class risk management system covering strategy, people, process, tools

it took 22 days to onboard new suppliers at the company, which inhibited the firm’s ability to innovate and drive value.

Thanks to a pioneering new project, that has now been cut to one day – a remarkable achievement that has enabled procurement and the supply base itself to bring innovation to the table more quickly than previously thought possible.

As many as 2,400 suppliers have been positively impacted by the change, with Microsoft’s approach slashing huge amounts in full-time people hours and delivering significant savings on supplier rates. As an example of the power of innovation, it’s hard to imagine anything more impressive.

Innovation has become the lifeblood of any successful company and any high-performing procurement organisation – and no company has exemplified this better than US software giant Microsoft.

So crucial has innovation become that this category was one of the most closely contested in our 2018 awards. It was Microsoft’s cutting-edge onboarding process, though, that did most to capture the attention of the judging panel – with the project amply demonstrating the impact that out-of-the-box thinking can have on a company’s bottom line.

Making strong connections

“The firm has left no stone unturned to ensure that the procurement organisation is fit for purpose, not just for 2018, but well into the future”

close working relationships with a top consulting firm, Turkcell has created a new collaboration benchmark, embarked on a thorough data analysis programme and carried out a series of expert interviews and negotiations in a bid to ensure every opportunity is realised and maximised to the full.

The results have demonstrated just how far-reaching the impact of its external collaboration has been. In the first three quarters of 2017, Turkcell announced the type of financial results not seen in a decade – a statistic that graphically illustrates the upward curve the company is now on. Procurement has played its role to the full.

Unity is power. That’s the underlying mantra that has governed a transformation process that has fundamentally altered how procurement works and the way in which the function is perceived within Turkcell, Turkey’s largest digital telecoms provider.

Employing more than 20,000 people and managing a spend of more than €2bn, Turkcell is aware of the impact a high-performing procurement organisation can have. And the firm has left no stone unturned to ensure the procurement organisation is fit for purpose – not just for 2018, but well into the future.

Pushing the boundaries

Winner: Bayer

embraced out-of-the-box thinking and maintained an open mind when it came to introducing and discussing the unconventional.

As well Bayer’s highly regarded Procurement Academy, colleagues were encouraged to acquire new skills and submit business ideas or new project proposals. This process was rolled out across the globe, with 16 teams from 11 countries involved, some 14 ideas made it to the pitch stage with Bayer’s procurement leadership team and, of those, four were eventually given the green light.

It’s the kind of approach that our judges felt has left Bayer’s procurement organisation, and those who work in it, in pole position for the future.

Providing a platform for a team to shine is an integral function of any high-performing procurement organisation, particularly in an era when the war for talent is being so keenly fought.

At Bayer, the German life sciences company, this need has helped to develop and foster an entrepreneurial spirit that, at times, has made one of Europe’s most well-established companies feel like a startup.

Utilising Adobe’s Kickbox tools, Bayer took its procurement employees out of their comfort zone and encouraged them to push the boundaries of what was previously thought possible. The aim of the company was to harness a procurement organisation that

Proving its worth

“As well as delivering hugely impressive savings, procurement has also succeeded in improving visibility and developing a new set of rules governing compliance”

SHORTLIST

With the sponsorship and support of the company’s CEO, Nomad’s procurement function set about developing a new way of working and encouraged a wholesale shift in attitude when it came to managing €167m of non-people indirect and advertising and promotional spend through the use of zero-based budgeting.

The results have been astonishing, and immediately captured the attention and imagination of our judging panel.

As well as delivering hugely impressive savings, procurement has also succeeded in improving visibility, developing a new set of compliance rules and, above all else, demonstrated the benefits collaboration can deliver.

As ever, this category attracted entries of the very highest standard – but the efforts of Nomad Foods stood out against the toughest opposition.

For years, the procurement team had been battling to prove its worth at the private equity-owned firm. Now, thanks to the introduction of a ground-breaking ‘cost-conscious mindset’ programme, the company’s purchasing organisation has brought its influence to bear.

Few sectors have experienced as extreme economic headwinds as the fast-moving consumer goods industry and Nomad Foods was under no illusion that failure to address price pressures would impact its ability to develop both its talent and brand.

Second to none

“Murphy energised the company’s 3,000+ procurement staff and created a vision that generated both excitement and passion”

SHORTLIST

Winner: Bob Murphy

One of the great challenges as a leader is to help a company or a team improve on what has gone before – regardless of the situation they walk into.

For Bob Murphy, CPO at IBM since 2014, his challenge was to make the high-performing procurement organisation not just good but great – something he has helped achieve at almost breakneck speed.

With more than 30 years’ experience, Murphy energised the company’s 3,000+ procurement staff and created a vision that generated both excitement and passion. In more practical terms, he developed a set of global transformation initiatives and domain priorities.

His relentless drive helped to

move IBM global procurement from a top-quartile performer to a truly world-class organisation. Integral to this shift were Murphy’s attributes as a leader and an attitude that never allows him to settle for second best.

As a result, the company’s global procurement team now lies firmly at the heart of the business and operate as a trusted adviser to the rest of the business.

Murphy has built strong relationships across IBM and his knowledge of the procurement and supply chain space is utilised by others at every opportunity. It’s his work with a high-performing procurement team, though, that really made him stand out. A fact our judges could not argue against.

Enhancing its reputation

“Procurement is ideally placed to help the company deal with any potential challenges and pitfalls that lie ahead”

SHORTLIST

Winner: Siemens Healthineers

as well as key suppliers, Siemens Healthineers has developed a comprehensive approach to innovation as a means of maintaining the company’s competitive edge in a dynamic and fast-paced global industry.

This has been achieved by keeping communication lines constantly open to those who play a role in influencing the business, whether that is stakeholders or management teams from across the business.

This ensures that the procurement function at Siemens Healthineers’ remains as agile as possible and is able to mould itself to face any challenge.

Our judges felt it was a sure-fire recipe for enduring excellence.

Siemens Healthineers is one of the world’s leading technology suppliers to the healthcare industry – it’s also a well-established leader in global procurement.

The company’s reputation for procurement excellence has been further enhanced through the introduction of a strategic programme that has helped to futureproof the function. With the aim of driving continuous improvement in a number of key activities, Siemens Healthineers’ procurement team is ideally placed to help the company deal with any potential challenges and pitfalls that lie ahead.

His career in procurement began in the early 1990s at Procter and Gamble, before leaving for Johnson & Johnson (J&J). LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

2014 Corporate Innovation award by the US National Minority Supplier Development Council for his commitment to supplier diversity while at J&J. Today, he continues to build on that success. Melotte serves as gender diversity lead on the executive committee at Starbucks in addition to being a foundational member of Procurement Leaders’ Women Procurement Leaders community.

It is a dedication to progress that feeds Melotte’s ongoing passion and projects. Overseeing Starbucks’ end-to-end global supply chain operations – including sourcing and supplier relationships, distribution, planning, commercialisation, transportation and store delivery – Melotte says he is motivated by helping to shape his organisation’s plans for growth and innovation.

It may seem strange – at the World Procurement Awards – to celebrate the achievements of somebody whose title does not feature the word “procurement”. But as a peer and previous winner of this award said of Melotte: “Procurement as a function has an advantage because it is not defined in a tight box or structure. We have the flexibility to be more – and Hans has always been more.”
