Gibson HallGibson Hall is a stunning converted banking hall located in the heart of the City of London. This prestigious and historic venue features a sumptuous Banqueting Hall which provides a glittering backdrop for the Adam Smith Awards Gala Presentation Lunch.

Gibson Hall has a fascinating history. In 1862 the Directors of the National Provincial Bank of England decided to rebuild their Head Office in Bishopsgate. The design was entrusted to John Gibson who became known for his rich classic style. John Gibson designed a series of banks, commercial buildings, town and country houses, churches, schools and even a mausoleum. In recognition of his work, the Royal Institute of British Architects awarded him their Gold Medal in 1890. The Gibson Hall is long regarded as his finest work and now bears his name.

The National Provincial Bank was one of three banks that made up the National Westminster Bank. By the 1860’s the Bank was outgrowing its premises and was considering relinquishing its right to issue notes so that it could open for banking business in London. Other banks in the capital, led by the London and Westminster Bank, had shown that note issuing was no longer vital to their success.

Between the Bishopsgate offices and the corner of Threadneedle Street stood a shop and the ‘Flower Pot Tavern’, immortalised in Charles Lamb’s essay on South Sea House. The Bank had the opportunity of purchasing these properties and their acquisition gave it a substantially enlarged area on which to rebuild. The Hall was built in 1865.

The most interesting features of the exterior are the carved panels, set between the columns, and the statues on top. These symbolise the industries and crafts for which the Bank and its branches supplied finance. In 1968 the National Provincial Bank joined forces with Westminster Bank and from 1970 these two major institutions were merged into National Westminster Bank.

When they decided to build a bank next door in 1980, the Hall was called National Westminster Hall, but in the 1990’s the name was changed to Gibson Hall, after the builder, John Gibson. From then on it has been a place to host unique events in London and for guests to enjoy the fantastic surroundings.

The City of London

Livery hallsMedieval livery companies were developed as guilds and were largely responsible for the regulation of their trades, control of prices and working conditions and welfare. Until the English Reformation in the 16th century they were closely associated with religious activities in support of chapels and churches and the observance of ceremonies; notably the mystery plays. It is thought likely that the name derives from misterium, meaning craft; a play performed by craft guilds. Many livery halls were destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666 or later in the London Blitz of World War II. Only some 40 companies still have livery halls in London.

The London WallThere are some remains of both Roman and medieval sections of the London Wall visible in the garden of Plaisterers’ Hall. Please ask one of the Treasury Today staff and they will be happy to show you. It is considered that the building of the London Wall took place between AD190 and AD225 as a defence against invasion and to protect London’s (Londinium’s) store of wealth. This stimulated the economic fortunes of the City. Once it was complete, the wall was almost three miles long, enclosing an area of approximately 330 acres. It was constructed largely of Kentish ragstone and was built six to nine feet wide and about 20 feet high.

St. Anne & St. Agnes ChurchIf you arrive early there is a very fine Church next to Plaisterers’ Hall with first mention of it on the present site dating back to 1137. The church was gutted by a fire in 1548 but was rebuilt soon after with further work being carried out in 1624. Sadly, the building’s 14thC tower was the only section to survive the great fire of London and was one of over 50 churches to be rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1680 with possible contributions from Robert Hooke. Wren planned it in the form of a Greek cross. Extensively restored in the 18th and 19th centuries, it suffered greatly in the Second World War by bombing during the London Blitz. Famous past parishioners include the poet John Milton, Pilgrim’s Progress author John Bunyan, and founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley who also preached here. Rededicated in 1966, the church is now used by the Lutheran church, the building also hosts popular classical and jazz seasons, including a varied programme of lunchtime concerts.

The City of London

The Great Fire of LondonLondoners who survived the ‘great plague’ of 1665 were exposed to danger once again when, fanned by a strong easterly wind on the night of 2nd September 1666, a fire started in a bakery in Pudding Lane owned by Thomas Farrinor, baker to King Charles II. The King ordered houses in the vicinity to be pulled down to create a firebreak but the blaze continued to spread and by 4th September half of the City of London had been consumed including 44 livery halls. As part of the rebuilding, it was decided to erect a permanent memorial of the Great Fire near the place where it began. Sir Christopher Wren, Surveyor General to King Charles II and the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral, and his friend and colleague, Dr Robert Hooke, provided a design for a colossal Doric column in the antique tradition. They drew up plans for a column containing a cantilevered stone staircase of 311 steps leading to a viewing platform. This was surmounted by a drum and a copper urn from which flames emerged, symbolising the Great Fire. The Monument, as it came to be called, is 61 metres high (202 feet) – the exact distance between it and the site in Pudding Lane where the fire began.

The City of LondonThe UK’s financial services industry has historically been based in the City of London and is often referred to as ”the City” or the “square mile”. The City of Londinium was established by the Romans around AD43 and to protect this strategically important port town on the River Thames, the London Wall was constructed.

The City of London today is ranked as the leading centre of business and finance and many banking and insurance institutions have their headquarters there. The London Stock Exchange (shares and bonds), Lloyd’s of London (insurance) and the Bank of England are all based in the City of London. Over 500 banks have offices in the City, and it is an established leader in trading in Eurobonds, foreign exchange, energy futures and global insurance. The Alternative Investment Market, a sub-market of the London Stock Exchange that permits smaller companies to participate with greater regulatory flexibility is a more recent development.
