FUMA MINI #1—DECEMBER 11TH FUMA SPRINTERS DOMINATE

FUMA’s sprint corps issued an early season warning at the first mini invitational of the year. O’Neil Combs clobbered the 6.6 barrier in the 55 dash with a personal best 6.52 and edged teammate Drake Davis by .03. Senior Rashad Bruce grabbed third in 6.76. Davis and Bruce would return later in the meet and take 1-2 in the 300 with times of 37.26 and 38.46 respectively. FUMA had two winning performances in the relays. The Lo-mong brothers teamed with Darvy Soignet and Julian Yescas to take the 4x800 in 8:29. The running events ended with O’Neil Combs blast-ing an opening leg of 52.6 on the 4x400. Freshman Logan Justice kept FUMA in the money as did senior Dante Price and Liam O’Brien held off the opposition on the anchor to grab the win. The field events were highlighted by Drake Davis’ win in the high jump (6’0) and Rashaad Bruce’s win in the triple jump at 41 feet. Had the meet been scored, FUMA would have taken top honors with 136 points, 63 clear of Charlottesville High School.

FUMA MINI#2—DECEMBER 17TH COMBS GIVES SCHOOL RECORD A SCARE

The Estes Athletic Center is a great facility but a tough one to secure a fast time in the 300. But don’t tell that to O’Neil Combs. The senior from Hampton, Vir-ginia carried his Autumn workload onto the tight turned track and nearly took down the school record set by Clyde Gross in 2013. His 36.49 effort ranks as the number 2 effort ever at FUMA. Watch out later in the season! Fork Union produced two more state leading performances in the 500 and 1000 as the Lomong brothers easily won both. FUMA was dominant in the short sprint as well grabbing four of the top six places as Drake Davis led the way with another personal best at 6.54. A big positive for the team is the 3200 meter per-formance of Julian Yescas. The freshman finished the 20 laps in 10:32. FUMA finished in second as a team just ten back of public school power North Stafford.

REAL DEAL—DECEMBER 5/6 COMBS SNAGS SECOND 22 FOOT JUMP

The track team kicked off the indoor season at The Real Deal Track Clas-sic in Hampton, Virginia. This is the third year in a row that FUMA has taken a small squad to the colossal sized event. And FUMA was well represented as O’Neil Combs showed incredible form for so early in the season. The 2013 State Long Jump champ eclipsed the 22 foot mark for the second time in his career and then placed 4th in an elite field of short dashers. Combs culminated the day with a top five performance in the 300. Two to watch this season are junior Liam O’Brien and freshman Logan Justice. Both athletes produced gigantic personal bests in the sprints.

Axel Mostrag will be this year’s Gus Lacy honoree!

FUMA had two athletes earn All-Central Virginia in XC.

Legendary Coach Bill Long, a great friend to FUMA Track passed away this fall. He will be missed.
