The Versatility of the Wing T
Throughout my 35 years of coaching at the High School
and Collegiate levels I have been involved in teaching
numerous offensive schemes and systems. One of the
biggest misconceptions I have witnessed, especially with
younger coaches, is the idea that the Wing T is strictly a
run/play action oriented offense. It has been my
experience that assumption is not necessarily accurate.
Like most offenses, using multiple formations can create aversatile pass game which can easily be incorporated into
the Wing T system. This can be especially effective at the
high school level where often your best athletes are your
running backs. With some very simple modifications you
can utilize these athletes within your passing game. Being
able to do this without mass substitutions can alsobroaden your playbook and make your offense so much
more difficult to defend.

Ways to Make the Wing T a Passing Offense
without personnel changes)
PART 1
There is no question that the Wing T offensive
system is a very strong run/play action system. If youare using the Wing T then you already understand the
reasons and philosophy behind the system. But
with some formation adjustments and additions it can also
be a versatile and functional passing game scheme.
What this first part will cover is ways to use your
Wing T personnel in the pass game simply but usingmultiple formations. The key philosophy here is to also
use those multiple formations without having to bring
different players onto the game field.
Through out this first part we will attempt to
demonstrate how to spread out and overload defensesas well as utilize your best athletes.
We will begin by discussing formational
alignments and movements and finish part 1 with some
schematic ways to incorporate these formations into
an actual passing attack or system.
Since we all have various protection schemes wewill not be covering any specific blocking assignments
during this series. Also again, because we all teach
different reads for our QB that is another area which will
not be discussed here. This is just about using multiple
formations within your Wing T system to enhance your
pass game and example of pass plays to accomplish that

We will go through each base formation and demonstrate
ways to make them more pass game friendly either by
ormations or movement. Beginning with the WING

PRO FORMATION
--This is a very simple adjustment that can be accomplished easily
by just flanking out a back or motioning one. The widening of the WB
forces the defense to defend entire field.
L
R
Slot motion to PRO
We can also give our formation potential a extra receivery putting the both RB to the same side
again by alignment or motion
RL
By motioning from slot to pro you not only spread the field but could
also cause coverage mistakes, either by scheme or even alignment or
personnel mismatches.
