Levels for Bordeaux Bottles

HF - High FillThe standard level for young wines or older bottles recorked at the Chateau.IN - Into NeckPerfect level for a wine of any age. Indicates very good storage conditions. Outstanding level for a wine 10 years of age or older.BN - Base of NeckGood level for a wine of any age. For wines 10 years of age or older, indicates perfect storage conditions.VTS – Very Top ShoulderAcceptable level for red Bordeaux wines around 20 years old.TS – Top ShoulderNormal for any claret 15 years old or older.HS – High ShoulderAcceptable for wine over 25 years old. Good for wine over 40 years old.MS – Mid ShoulderNot unusual for wines over 40 years old. Could indicate early signs of cork failure.LMS – Low-Mid-ShoulderUsually indicates deterioration of the cork.LS- Low ShoulderMay indicate poor storage condition and possibly an undrinkable wine.

Levels for Burgundy Bottles

The share of Burgundy bottles does not allow for a level system based on the shoulder of the bottle; levels are described in terms of centimeters below the cork.Generally, Burgundy bottles with a fill level of 2.5cm or above are considered normal for wines younger than 10 years of age. Wines more than 15 years old of age with fill levels of between 4cm to 6cm are generally consid-ered to be sound provenance, though consideration should be given to the clarity and colour of the wine in the bottle, as well as the condition of the cork.Burgundy bottles with fill levels lower than 6cm may be at risk of being damaged or undrinkable.

< 2 cm considered an excellent fill for any age< 3 cm a perfectly normal fill for wines 10 years of age or older. It is an excellent fill level for wines 25 years of age or older.< 4 cm considered a normal fill for wines more than 20 years of age and excellent for wine more than 35 years of age.On the other hand, it should be the cause for concern in wines 15 years and younger.< 5 cm not uncommom in older wines of 30 years and more. At this level some oxidation is likely to have occurred and the remaining wine may be fragile at best and not enjoyable at worst.< 6 cm a poor fill level for any wine and not recommend-ed for purchase unless extremely rare.

Dear Connoisseurs,

Time comes again for our annual Fine Wines, Cognacs

& Other Spirits sale in Singapore, coincidentally taking

place, this year again, during the period of the Singapore

Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Just before going to print, we are saddened by the passing

of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild on Saturday 23rd

August 2014, owner of Bordeaux first-growth Château

Mouton-Rothschild. The charismatic "Lady of Mouton

Rothschild" will be remembered as a monumental

figure in the wine industry. She will deeply be missed.

Like her father Baron Philippe de Rothschild before her

with Opus One in Napa, the Baroness very successfully

sealed fruitful wine partnerships across the globe. In

homage to the late Baroness Philippine de Rothschild

we will open the auction with three lots of Viňa

Almaviva - the venture between the Baroness and the

Chilean winery Concha y Toro.

In addition to these beautiful wines, we are pleased to

showcase a collection of very nice drinking clarets all

in perfect condition for different occasions. In addition

of highly sought after first and second growth wines

of Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Pichon

Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, you will appreciate

getting the chance to secure labels from Malescot St.

Exupéry, La Fleur-Pétrus or Grand-Puy-Ducasse, in

pristine conditions and all in original wooden case.

A nice focus is also given on equally excellent red

Burgundy from extremely reputable domains such

as Domaine Faiveley, Prieuré Roch, Trapet, Comte

Georges de Vogüé and "éleveur" Dominique Laurent.

Please check our selection of Grand Crus Echézeaux,

Bonnes-Mares, Charmes Chambertin, Clos de la Roche

and Premier Cru Vosnes-Romanée amongst others;

all the bottles were inspected and are perfectly stored

in a temperature-controlled walk-in wine cellar in

Singapore.

This Singapore "speed week" has to be celebrated

with some exceptional partnership. We are honored

to collaborate on this sale with LOUIS XIII, the most

evocative name in the whole of Cognac. For the first

time and exclusively for Spink Fine Wines & Spirits,

LOUIS XIII will reveal and auction a brand new

limited edition which celebrates LOUIS XIII’s 140th

anniversary and which will be officially released only

later this year. In addition of some rare consignments

directly from Rémy Martin’s cellar, we are glad to

offer some valuable limited editions and old collectable

decanters of the luxury cognac LOUIS XIII sourced

from the private collection of some of our esteemed

clients.

Finally, the sale is featuring other precious decanters

and a very exciting range of cognacs & whiskies for

those who wish to secure rarities such as a Macallan

33 year old in crystal decanter, a Bruichalddich 1965, a

Loch Lomond 1966, the pretty Hennessy Nostalgie de

Bagnolet or even acquire their own cask of Bowmore

1990.

In the ever changing market of fine wines, cognacs

and spirits, we hope you will find within this catalogue

some timeless treasures…

Spiritually Yours,

Your Spink Fine Wines & Spirits Team

Did you know – Primer OrdenThere is still no official classification of wines in Chile. However, the launch of Almaviva has given rise to the Primer Orden category, a Spanish term that corresponds to the French concept of Grand Cru and the English estate grown wines.

Primer Orden wines are made and bottled at the estate own winery and vineyards, by a technical team dedicated exclusively to producing one wine.

CHILE

Did you know – Viña Almaviva – A felicitous encounterIn 1997, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA (Owners of renowned estates such as Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Clerc Milon, or Mouton Cadet) and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle of Chile’s leading winery Viña Concha y Toro S.A., sealed a partnership agreement with a view to create an exceptional Franco-Chilean wine called Viña Almaviva.

Made from a blend of classic Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere and Cabernet Franc), in which Cabernet Sauvignon predominates, Viña Almaviva is the result of a felicitous encounter between two cultures. Chile offers its soil, its climate and its vineyards, while France contributes its winemaking savoir-faire and traditions. The result is an exceptionally elegant and complex wine.

Viña Almaviva's launch was a major milestone in the development of Chilean wines, both in Chile itself and in the international market.

Baroness Philippine de Rothschild died on 23rd of August 2014 at the age of 80. She will be remembered by all as the radiant and charismatic "Lady of Mouton Rothschild” and most of all as a monumental figure in the wine industry.

On Baron Philippe’s death in 1988, the Baroness ended a notable stage career to actively pass on her father’s legacy and bring Mouton and the family company, Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, into the 21st century.

She notably reasserted the link between Mouton and the arts – debuted by her father – by founding the travelling exhibition, “Mouton Rothschild – Paintings for the Labels”, showcasing the original artworks of Mouton’s famous labels by some of the most celebrated artists of their day, including Miró, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Tàpies, Francis Bacon or Dali.

Like her father Baron Philippe de Rothschild before her, who founded Opus One in California jointly with Robert Mondavi in the 1980’s, the Baroness sealed new revolutionary wine partnerships beyond Bordeaux such as Viňa Almaviva - a venture between the Baroness and the winery Concha y Toro in Chile since 1997.

She ensured the excellence of Mouton’s First Growth whilst making the most of the whole estate by starting the production of a high-quality dry white wine, Aile d’Argent, in 1991, and of the second wine Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, in 1993.

Baroness Philippine was actively helped by her two sons, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Vice-Chairman of the Supervisory Board, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild. She has ten grandchildren, seven of them from her daughter Camille Ögren. They all share the same ambition for Mouton’s present and future: to continue to enhance its status as a First Growth wine, to keep it in the family from one generation to the next, and to preserve it as a place of art and beauty.

Starting Price: S$ 11,700 (per lot)

The Wine Advocate April 2005, 94/100“A brilliant offering and a candidate for wine of the vintage, this is classic Lafite that reminded me somewhat of the 1976, although the vintage conditions were completely different. This is a medium-weight, quintessentially elegant style of Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings/graphite along with black currants, plums, and crushed rocks/mineral. Wonderfully pure, dense, with a deep ruby/purple color and loads of fruit, definition, and a long finish, this is a brilliant, elegant Lafite Rothschild that builds incrementally in the mouth and has more power and density than it initially seems. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.”

The Wine Advocate June 2010, 95 points“This estate, which has continued to impress me in recent years, hit a home run in 2000. Showing slightly better than I rated it previously, this wine is deep bluish/purple with some lightening at the edge, and its floral nose displays notes of melted licorice, crushed rock, blueberries and black raspberries. A wine of extraordinary balance, equilibrium, and purity, with supple tannins, this medium to full-bodied, concentrated effort is already compelling and has hit its window of full maturity, where it should stay for another 15-20 years.”

13Château La Fleur Pétrus 1996Pomerol.Pristine condition. Original wooden case.1 case (12 bottles, 75cl each).

Starting Price: S$ 2,600 (per lot)

Wine Advocate April 1999 89/100 “This property has come of age with the acquisition of Le Gay's old vine parcel. It is now consistently one of the finest wines of the appellation, and clearly merits is famous name. The 1996 may deserve an outstanding score with a year or two of bottle age. It boasts an impressively saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a pure, sweet nose of cherries, plum liqueur, spicy oak, and floral scents. The wine possesses excellent depth, medium body, superb purity, and an overall elegant personality offering a combination of power and finesse. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.”

Pomerol

Did you know – Château La Fleur PétrusChâteau La Fleur Pétrus takes its name from its closest neighbors. The Bordeaux wine property is situated less than a stone’s throw from Pétrus and from Château Lafleur. Not bad company to keep if you are located on the famous Pomerol plateau!

In 1953, Château La Fleur Pétrus was purchased by internationally known winemaker and merchant Jean-Pierre Moueix. While Château La Fleur Pétrus had already cachet before, the wine clearly improved since it was taken over by the Moueix family. Shortly after the vineyard was purchased, the vineyards were decimated by the 1956 frost and had to be replanted. 4 hectares of old vines, acquired from Château Le Gay, were added in 1994 to the vineyard.

The style of the wines at Château La Fleur Pétrus is similar to its Château, a French country house that was built in 1782… It’s elegant, classic and understated.

The 18 hectare Pomerol vineyard of Château La Fleur Pétrus is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc on gravel with clay soils. Even though the vineyard is located just across a small, dirt road from Pétrus and only a single vine away from Château Lafleur, the terroir of Château La Fleur Pétrus is different than either estate, with its mix of gravel and clay soils. Very little, if any blue clay is found in their soils. Château La Fleur Pétrus releases under 4,000 cases of Bordeaux wine per year.

Wine Advocate June 2004, 99/100 points“A monumental effort, the 2001 Rieussec boasts a light to medium gold color in addition to a fabulous perfume of honeysuckle, smoky oak, caramelized tropical fruits, creme brulee, and Grand Marnier. The wine is massive and full-bodied yet neither over the top nor heavy because of good acidity. With intense botrytis as well as a 70-75-second finish, this amazing Sauternes will be its apogee between 2010-2035.”

The Wine Advocate June 2010, 92-93 points“Comprising five barrels from four different growers in Poulaillieres, Les Treux, Grands Echézeaux, and Echezeaux du Dessus – but in total representing less than half of the volume he produced from 2006 – Laurent’s 2008 Echézeaux Vieilles Vignes features fresh rhubarb and red cherry as well as singed, vanilla- and cocoa powder-tinged caramelized pit fruits and baked goods. The tension between fresh berry tartness and caramel-ized confection; between richness and vivacity, is uncan-nily synergistic. A creamy richness of texture adds allure and underlying suggestions of peat and tobacco further complexity. The finish here is ravishing and irresistibly insistent that I take another sip … and another. As win-some as this is – especially for its vintage – it harbors energy to take it through at least 15 years of excellence.”

Did you know – Dominique LaurentStephan Tanzer, American wine critic, editor and publisher of the bimonthly International Wine Cellar (‘IWC’) since 1985 summed up Dominique Laurent's wines as such: “Few éleveurs use extended barrel aging so effectively to fill out the textures and extend the finishes of their wines: the 2000s that I tasted in blind flights against their peers in January and early February were consistently the deepest and longest wines on the table. These wines also held their fruit for days in the recorked bottles.”Dominique Laurent who used to be a pastry Chef before becoming a winemaker is certainly able to apply the detail-oriented approach of making fine pastry to making lovely Burgundian wines.

93-96 points Stephen Tanzer, The International Wine Cellar. “Two-thirds new oak; has the highest pH of these 2009s, at 3.7. Red ruby. Knockout multidimensional nose combines red berries, licorice, orange peel and pungent smoky minerality. Dense, snappy, sweet and very young: much about soil than pinot noir fruit. Offers intriguing saline and orange peel notes, plus a licorice quality that Hervet says comes from soil rich in silica, Wonderfully tactile finish offers outstanding lift and some sweet new oak. This got better and better in the glass” (Jan/Feb. 2011).

Did you know – Domaine Prieuré-RochThis domaine was established in 1988 by Henry-Frédéric Roch, a member of the Leroy winemaking family and current co-owner and co-director of Domaine Romanée Conti. It is a private estate consisting of tiny “clos” of premier cru and grand cru vineyards of the Côtes de Nuits. The domaine’s wines are organic and crafted following the same regime: use of gravity-flow in the winery, whole cluster fermentation, no de-stemming, fining or filtering. The wines are aged in new French oak for a minimum of 18 months. Stylistically, the wines show the attributes of their terroir and combine elegance and refinement with earth and power, characteristics often associated with the wines of Leroy.

95 points Stephen Tanzer, The International Wine Cellar “Very pale yellow, Aromas of Mirabelle, apple, spices, menthol and white truffles, lifted by a whiff of lime blos-som. Juicy and rich but extremely discreet today, with ripe apple and spice flavors coming across as fully ripe but classically dry. There’s an almost exotic marzipan note on the back end but strong acidity is keeping the wine under wraps. This will need at least seven or eight years of cellaring to begin to deliver on its considerable potential. 95 (+?) points” Oct. 2011.

Did you know – Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils

Founded in 1731, the Bouchard Père & Fils House owns a fabulous mosaic of famous terroirs located in the heart of the Côte d’Or the mythical cradle of Burgundy’s great wines. Its domains cover 130 hectares, 86 of which are in Grand Crus and Premiers Crus. Its headquarters are located on the site of the ancient Château de Beaune, a fortress built in the fifteenth century under Louis XI. Its bastions, with wall seven meters thick, harbor under top conditions a matchless collection of thousands bottles dating from the nineteenth century.

THE KING OF SPIRITS

LOUIS XIII is a cognac like no other… Its making spans one hundred years. Here we invite you to discover the foundations of its reputation, and the tributes that the world has offered to the King of Spirits.

A masterpiece of craftsmanshipTo create the legend that is LOUIS XIII, the House of Rémy Martin drew on the long tradition of craftsmanship it had nurtured since it was founded in 1724.

It is 140 years ago, in 1874, that Paul-Émile Rémy Martin I decided to use the oldest and finest reserves of cognac that the family was traditionally keeping year after year, to create a very special “Grande Champagne – Âge Inconnu” (Age Unknown) cognac - the original LOUIS XIII !

LOUIS XIII has its roots in the Grande Champagne region, the best terroir in the heart of the Cognac Region in France. Only in this place does the formation have that special perfection that makes it the birthplace of the only grapes that will ever go to make LOUIS XIII.

A rare cognac aged for 100 yearsAs a blend of cognacs aged for some of them more than 100 years, each decanter of LOUIS XIII is the extraordinary blend of 1,200 eaux-de-vie that are carefully selected and blended by 4 generations of Cellar Masters over 100 years. These eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne region give LOUIS XIII cognac its unparalleled aromatic complexity.

The exact production figures are one of Remy Martin’s best kept secrets, however it’s easy to realize that reserves of 100 year old eaux-de-vie are scarce while the demand for fine and rare spirits keeps on growing, making every sip of LOUIS XIII even more special…

Ever wondered how it would be, even if only for an instant, to live beyond the bounds of ordinary life? Beyond time. Beyond emotion. Beyond sensation. Ever wondered how it would be to have a taste of a whole century in just one moment? LOUIS XIII offers you that very special experience.

A precious crystal decanter for the rare elixirWith its rich detailing, the LOUIS XIII decanter is a treasure by itself.

Only the very best craftsmen of France’s most renowned crystal factories have the skill required for the processes entailed in the making of crystal at this level of quality. Each decanter is executed in the manner of an Haute Couture creation, hand-crafted and hand-blown by eleven craftsmen working in unison in a balletic performance to complete each operation while the glass remains at the perfect temperature.

No two Louis XIII decanters are ever exactly the same and each piece is individually numbered.

The witness of historical landmarksLOUIS XIII gained world-wide recognition following the Paris World Fair of 1900, becoming a staple at all grand occasions and the most famous historical events. LOUIS XIII was on board of the legendary Orient Express’ first journey to Constantinople in 1929 and the Normandie cruise ship’s first trans-Atlantic voyage in 1935; at the first Christmas of Charles de Gaulle’s exiled French government; and aboard the inaugural flight of the Concorde, defying time at a speed of Mach 2 in 1976.

EXPERIENCE HISTORY…

WINES, COGNACS & OTHER SPIRITS

Since 1874Created in 1874, LOUIS XIII, which celebrates this year its 140th anniversary, evokes the landmarks of history and the famous personalities who made it theirs since LOUIS XIII embarked on far-flung conquests – Hong Kong, Shanghai, Mumbai, Tokyo, Rangoon, Cape Town, Buenos Aires, New York and San Francisco, as early as 1880,.

The favorite of historical figuresIts reputation began with illustrious customers among the royal houses of Europe and beyond. LOUIS XIII was a favourite of the Swedish royal court and soirées of the Kingdom of Siam, Nicholas II, last Tsar of Russia or the Queen of Britain. Then came fame with the patronage of the new celebrities of the modern world and major political figures, such as Chanel, Picasso, Churchill or de Gaulle.

35

As the global demand of cognac increases while the supply is getting shorter, notably reserves of very old eaux-de-vie, the value of LOUIS XIII and other old cognacs has been increasing at a rapid pace over the last few years and is expected to increase further.

As cognac does not age once it is bottled, is easy to store and does not spoil easily, more and more investors turn towards cognacs and other aged spirits for safe investment. One only needs to take a look at some of the recent sales of old cognacs in auctions to see how the selling prices usually end up far higher than the prices the sellers historically acquired the bottles at. Limited editions offer another great opportunity for returns and we have seen in the past the prices of some limited editions doubling after a few months on the secondary market, as soon as the limited edition was sold out and rarer to find.

Cognac as a safe investment? The main difficulty when investing in such fantastic cognacs, however, is to resist the temptation to drink these exceptional bottles!

From the earliest days, the glorious decanter was an invitation to equally glorious styles of presentation. LOUIS XIII was made to be presented as a gift of the most luxurious kind and its successive presentation cases have become over the years true collectibles.

LOUIS XIII’s presentation box is usually a very reliable way to approximately date a bottle as it has evolved over the years and across the continents.

A COLLECTORS’ FAVORITE

With its crystal decanter and its elegant presentation cases, the scarce LOUIS XIII has become over the years a collectors’ favourite.

Its emblematic decanter symbolizes history as it owes its inspiration to a humble metallic flask that was lost on a French battlefield in Jarnac in 1569, more than four centuries ago, where Catholic and Protestants were fighting. It is only three centuries later in the 1870’s that the flask was dug from the ground by a peasant and purchased by Paul-Émile Rémy Martin I, who was passionate about history.

In the 40’s and 50’s, LOUIS XIII was sold in Europe in a wicker basket while in the USA it came in a green velvet box.

LOUIS XIII was first sold under the label “Très Vieille Grande Champagne - Âge Inconnu” (Very Old Grande Champagne – Age Unknown). Some of these decanters were served to Britain’s King

George VI and Queen Elizabeth in Versailles, France in 1938.

Since 2010’s, the new art deco case.

In the 2000’s, the red shell box

In the 80’s and 90’s, the red treasure chest

In the 70’s, LOUIS XIII came in a red octogonal box.

In the late 30’s, LOUIS XIII came in red velvet boxes.

The LOUIS XIII handworked “fleur de lys” crystal stopper was introduced in the 1980’s to reflect the royal approval that LOUIS XIII

has so often enjoyed.

In the 60’s, LOUIS XIII came in a white box, then in a red oval box.

LOUIS XIII RARE CASK 42.6 – THE TASTE OF PERFECTION

Released in 2013, LOUIS XIII RARE CASK 42.6 signaled its distinction with an alcohol degree beyond the expected 40 per cent, 42.6 degrees. But the level of alcohol is merely a signal. What sets a Rare Cask apart is the quite astonishing richness and intensity of its flavours.

At the heart of the composition are those prized autumn flavours of nuts and dried fruit – the long-aged flavours for which LOUIS XIII is renowned. But a Rare Cask is also blessed with flavours that are all its own. Alongside those autumn aromas, LOUIS XIII RARE CASK 42.6 declares its distinction with notes of plum and date, mingling with flavours of gingerbread and prune stone, punctuated by a final touch of tobacco leaf.

47LOUIS XIII LE JEROBOAM (Limited release since 2011 / 100 bottles a year)Format introduced in 2011 reserved for a few privileged luxurious hotels, collectors and aficionados across the world.3 liter decanter – four times the capacity of the standard LOUIS XIII.Crystal decanter made of 5 kilos of crystal.100 decanters released per year only - Decanter No. 17.Comes in a wooden trunk with four crystal glasses and a service pipette to draw the cognac from the decanter.40%, 3L.

Starting Price: S$ 31,000

LOUIS XIII LE JEROBOAMWith a decanter four times larger than a traditional decanter, LOUIS XIII LE JEROBOAM definitely makes an impression. Each Jeroboam decanter is made of five kilograms of the finest crystal and is individually fashioned by a team of nine exceptionally skilled crystal craftsmen from the renowned Cristallerie de Sèvres in France.

But there is more to LE JEROBOAM than sheer volume as the size of the decanter invites a unique ritual of tasting that draws the consumer into the very creation of LOUIS XIII. LE JEROBOAM must be approached as each Cellar Master has approached it, across one hundred years of blending and ageing. The decanter arrives protected in a wooden trunk and, like the precious casks in the cellar, is spared all unnecessary disturbance. It comes with a pipette, as just as the Cellar Master at the cask, the spirit is drawn out with this traditional tool that samples the precious contents with just the lightest touch and which is used exclusively by the Cellar Master and passed on from generation to generation. Four special crystal glasses also accompany the decanter, for sharing this outstanding cognac.

A masterpiece addition to the LOUIS XIII collection, LE JEROBOAM is reserved for a privileged few with only 100 carafes produced every year, since its release in 2011.

LOUIS XIII BLACK PEARL ANNIVERSARY EDITION

7 years after the first edition of Black Pearl, and to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the LOUIS XIII brand (1874-2014), the House of Rémy Martin is unveiling a limited series of just 775 decanters - the LOUIS XIII Black PearlAnniversary Edition.

These numbered decanters are drawn from a unique 572-litre cask, part of the family’s private reserve in the Domaine de Merpins, Cognac. Handmade a century ago using oak from France’s Limousin region, the tierçon – marked C-100-93 – is only the third of its kind to be released by the family in the past 100 years.

Such an important celebration demands an iconic decanter: a contemporary “Black Pearl” version of the original metal flask that inspired Paul-Émile Rémy Martin when he created LOUIS XIII in 1874.

To craft this superb metallic decanter, the House of Baccarat treated the crystal using a unique plating technique. This gives the decanter a beautiful reflective quality, with myriad subtle contrasts of light and dark dancing across its surface. Achieving this dichroic effect involves layering successive thin coatings of precious materials (titanium, carbon and gold) one upon the other.

The result is a true work of art…

The LOUIS XIII BLACK PEARL ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available worldwide in late 2014, on waiting list, exclusively from a few selected LOUIS XIII’s partner outlets and merchants.

With the auction, Spink and LOUIS XIII offer a fortunate buyer the opportunity to be the first one to secure a decanter of the BLACK PEARL ANNIVERSARY EDITION. Armagnacs

Did you know - ArmagnacsLike cognac, Armagnac is a grape brandy from France. Here, however, ends the comparison between the two spirits as Armagnac and Cognac are very different with regards to grapes, terroir, craftsmanship (distillation and blending) as well as aromas.

Armagnac comes from the Gascony region of southwestern France. While the Ugni Blanc grape variety now dominates the cognac production, armagnacs can be made of nine varietals, with Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Bacco being the most represented in the blends.

The Armagnac region is divided into 3 different terroirs: the Bas-Armagnac, the Ténarèze and the Haut-Armagnac. Most of the Armagnacs come from the Bas-Armagnac (also known as Grand Bas-Armagnac) which is named for its lower altitude, rather than lower quality.

While cognac is the result of double distillation, Armagnac is traditionally distilled once only, producing a young lower-alcohol spirit vis a vis cognac which retains many esters, acids and congeners which makes young Armagnacs harsher but which with time will give more aromatic complexity to the older Armagnacs.

For the mainstream commercial market, however, one has seen the multiplication of Armagnacs produced by large negociants which are double-distilled so that they can be released faster although they lose in aromatic complexity.

Cognac is aged in Limousin oak, Armagnacs in Gascon oak, which can bring an element of tannin.

Armagnacs appellations slightly differ from Cognac appellations: 3 stars Armagnacs must be aged at least two years (similar to VS cognacs), VSOP or Reserve at least 5 years (against 4 years for cognac), XO or Vieille Reserve or Napoleon 6 years (similar to XO cognacs) and Hors d’Age at least 10 years.

While Armagnac’s production and sales never compare to the ones of Cognac, Armagnacs have always commanded the utmost respect of connoisseurs while bottlings by small (often family owned) independent estates and vintage armagnacs are highly sought after.

Did you know - Loch Lomond, HighlandsLoch Lomond is a lesser known Scottish distillery as most of its production was traditionally destined for blending.

It was founded in 1966 and named after its main water source. Located in an industrial complex and armed with an army of different stills, the distillery produced, interestingly enough, an incredible number of brands and whisky types. Over the years, the distillery has released bottlings under seven different names: Inchmurrin, Inchmoan, Inchfad, Crotengea, Glen Douglass, Craiglodge and, naturally, Loch Lomond, each with varying peat levels. As such, there’s no real unique style for Loch Lomond malts and each bottle is a different experience, which should excite adventurous single malt aficionados!

Spink (Asia) Pte Ltd assumes no responsibility for any error or omission in foreign or Singapore currency amounts shown. THE SALE WILL BE CONDUCTED IN SINGAPORE DOLLARS GUIDE FOR ABSENTEE BIDDERS ABSENTEE BIDS If you are unable to attend an auction in person, and wish to place bids, you may consider instructing Spink (Asia) Pte Ltd Bid Department to bid on your behalf. Upon receiving your written instructions, our representative will make every effort possible to try to acquire the lot(s) of your choice at the lowest price possible, and never to exceed the top limit you indicate. This service is complimentary and with strict confidence. Spink (Asia) Pte Ltd offer this value-added service as a convenience to our clients who are unable to attend the auction, however, Spink (Asia) Pte Ltd will not be held responsible for error, omission or failure to execute bids. PLACING ABSENTEE BIDS To place bids, please use the absentee bid form provided in the catalogue. Be sure to accurately record the lot number(s) and the top price you are willing to pay for each lot. “Buy” bids will not be accepted. Always indicate a “top limit” - the amount to which you would bid if you were attending the auction yourself. Alternative bids should be indicated by using the word “OR” between lot numbers. If your bid on an early lot is successful, we will not continue to bid on other lots for you. Or, if your early bids are unsuccessful, we will continue to execute bids for alternative lots until a bid is successful. Bids must always be placed in the same order as the lot numbers appear in the catalogue. Each absentee bid form should contain bids for one auction only; the auction code number should be stated on the form. Please place your bids as early as possible. In the event of identical bids, the earliest received will take precedence. TELEPHONE BIDS Bids may be placed by telephone, but are accepted subject to Spink (Asia) Pte Ltd’ discretion and are at caller’s risk. At the sole discretion of Spink (Asia) Pte Ltd, telephone bids may be recorded. By bidding on the telephone, prospective purchasers consent thereto. BUYER’S PREMIUM The “top limit” you indicate on your bid form is for the hammer price only. A 22% buyer’s premium will be added to the successful bid price for each lot you buy and is payable by you.
