    Williams-Sonoma Returns to Sonoma

In celebration of Chuck Williams99th birthday, Williams-Sonomahosted an open house to celebrate

the opening of their new and orig-inal store of this famed merchant. It all started in 1956 when Chuckpurchased a small Sonoma hard-ware shop and converted it into astore for passionate home cooks.Half a century later, that cook-

ware shop has evolved into a globalbrand that changed the way peoplecook. Now this original location hasbeen re-purchased and re-openedas a design center, cooking schooland historic store.

The Napa Valley is generally regardedas Americas most famous and most

prestigious wine producing region. Exceptduring peak traffic times, it is an easy hoursdrive to the northeast from San Franciscoor to the southwest from Sacramento. he

is framed by the Mayacamas Mountains onits western and northern sides, by the VacaMountains to the east, and by San Pablo Bayto the south.

From north to south, the principal townsof the Napa Valley are Calistoga, St. Helena,

Yountville, and the town of Napa. BetweenSt. Helena and Yountville, the hamlets of

Rutherford and Oakville are importantgrape growing and winemaking centers.

South of the town of Napa, AmericanCanyon is significant as a commercialcenter and as the second largest town inNapa County (after the town of Napa). heNapa Valley is home to over 400 wineries, some of the best restaurants in the UnitedStates, world-class spas, and many otheramenities.

Our suggestions on where to taste, where to eat, and what to do

    Healdsburg Area

    40| Wine Country Guide >>www.winecountryguide.com

As the Russian River twists and turns her

way out to the Pacific, valleys and gentle

hillsides fan out on both sides. Her banks

are strewn with sandy beaches, redwood

forests, and vineyards of every description.

he river has carved three valleys of major

    winemaking significance: Alexander, Dr y

Creek, and Russian River. hrough these

valleys dozens of wineries rise out of the sea

of vines, presenting visitors with a bafflingarray of places to explore and tastes to savor.

We suggest you explore the three valleys

    starting from Healdsburgwinery central

for northern Sonoma County and the hub

of the three-valley area. Framed by the

Alexander Valley to the northeast, the Dry

Creek Valley to the northwest, and Chalk

Hill and Knights Valley to the southeast,

its no wonder the grapes and wine make

the towns wheels go round. he heart of

Healdsburg is a shady park, known as the

    Plaza, surrounded by inns, restaurants,

and shops. here are gourmet delis, too, if

you choose to picnic right there or want to

    provision a vineyard outing.

Dry Creek ValleyNear the Mendocino County border, about

10 miles northwest of Healdsburg, the WarmSprings Dam holds back the waters of DryCreek, forming serpentine Lake Sonoma. From the dam, you get a birds eye viewof the valley that rolls out in front of you.he dam was built by the Army Corps ofEngineers in the 1980s primarily to form

and, while scenic and serviceable, it isnot a particularly good road. If you follow

Westside all the way to its end, you will findyourself at River Road about three mileswest of Wohler.

he character of the Russian River

Valley is a bit different north to south. henorthern reach has much more of a DryCreek Valley feel. Up north the wineries aregenerally larger, newer, and perhaps a littleflashier than in the south, which has a morerustic feel.

On the map, the southern Russian RiverValley is a large area with irregular shape

that is somewhat wider than it is tall. It isbounded on the north by River Road, whichbecomes Old River Road near Guerneville;and on the south by state Highway 12, whichbecomes Sebastopol Road and then theBodega Highway as it runs east to west. Onthe west, the Bohemian Highway shapesthe area, running from near Guerneville

southeast to Freestone. Highway 101 formsthe eastern boundary.

State Highway 116 runs diagonallythrough the southern valley, fromGuerneville in the northwest to Sebastopolin the southeast. Other important roadsare Mirabel Road, which connects RiverRoad and Highway 116; Guerneville Roadconnecting Highway 101 and Highway 116;and Olivet Road connecting River Road andGuerneville Road. All along this skeletonof roadways and many smaller roadsbranching from it are a myriad of wineries

where you can taste Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and other wines produced in the RussianRiver Valley appellation.

he major towns youll want to considervisiting in the southern Russian River Valleyare Sebastopol, Graton, Guerneville, andOccidental. Forestville is also importantbecause it is home to some good wineriesand is located at the junction of MirabelRoad and Highway 116.

In Sebastopol, you can enjoy an easy stroll

along Main Street to take in antique, art,

and book shops among other homegrown

    stores and restaurants that somehow

are only found in small towns. Youll find

the Sebastopol natives to be friendly and

welcoming if a bit quirky. Nonconformityis the norm among many locals in this

    unabashedly authentic and American small

    town.

he hamlet of Graton is essentially a wide

spot in Graton Road just west of Highway

116 near its intersection with Guerneville

Road and about four miles northwest of

Sebastopol. ake a few minutes to walk

the downtown area, occupying just a

couple of blocks along Graton Road. Youll

    find surprising touches of sophistication

    including good restaurants and interesting

    shops.

If youve stopped in Graton, you might as

well continue on along Graton Road about

six miles to the southwest to Occidental.

    Yet another micro-town, Occidental

seems impossibly cute, but is remarkably

authentic. Here again you will find good

    restaurants and many interesting shops

to browse. From Occidental, you can head

north along the Bohemian Highway toGuerneville or go south to Freestone where

you can pick up the Sebastopol Highway

(Highway 12) back toward Sebastopol. Or,

you can just go back to Highway 116 the way

    you came.

Guerneville is about 12 miles to the

northwest of Graton along Highway 116, andabout 15 miles to the north of Occidental

along the Bohemian Highway route. During

the warmer months, which can be seven or

eight months in the Wine Country, it is the

focal point of much activity for visitors to

the many rustic resorts along the Russian

    River.
