World War l Tree Memorial

This November will be the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I. As you may have noticed, that the trees around the Holy Name Property have had plaques to individual war dead. These individuals killed in that war were from the neighborhood and/or Holy Name. The plaques were purchased by their families and installed by the Parks Department starting in 1919. Since we are approaching the 100th Anniversary we would like to clean them up and re-dedicate them this November. To do that we have removed them temporarily and put them in safe storage. We are now reaching out to the parish and neighborhood to help us. We know that we have not accounted for a number of plaques that were on the property. Over the years we also know some of these plaques have been dislodged and people have put them away in their home for safekeeping. If you happen to have one of these plaques in your safekeeping please reach out to us and let us know. We can even come to pick it up. Please call Pat Halpin at 347-453-7801 if you have one of these plaques. Thanks for your attention in this matter.

Parish Goal: $43,870 Amount Pledged: $100,477 Total Received: $72,580

Dear Parishioners, the following is a list of parishioners who made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appel. Our goal was $42,000 however, I am happy to report that the total amount pledged is $100,477. All monies raised above the goal will be returned to the parish of Holy Name. If all pledges are fulfilled we have an opportunity of realizing $72,580. Thank you for your making the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal a tremendous success. If you would like to make a pledge you can pick up a pledge card in the Church lobby.

Registration for Religious Education Classes for September 2018

Registration for the 2018-2019 Religious Education Program has begun. If your child is in grades 1-8 and they are attending a public or a non-Catholic private school they should be attending religious education classes to help them grow in their faith and to prepare them to receive their sacraments. Holy Name’s Catechism program has as long and as deep a history as our parish itself. Our goal is to create an environment of classroom learning and “faith” experiences that educates our school age children about Jesus and the Catholic faith. Important to that mission is preparing our children to receive the sacraments of Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Our program tenets are “Faith, Fun and Fellowship”. We are blessed with wonderful Catechists, Parish Clergy and lay staff who are dedicated to our children’s development as faithful Catholics. Registration forms are available in the back of Church, on the Holy Name website or by contacting Kathryn Sisto, Coordinator of Religious Education at [email protected] or 718-768-7629. Re-registration has also begun for our current students. To register your child or if you have any questions regarding our Religious Education Program please contact Kathryn Sisto at 718-768-7629.

PRO-LIFE QUOTE Noted euthanasia specialist Wesley J. Smith noted in a 1993 Newsweek article that eventually “medicalized killi ng/suicide would be conjoined with organ harvesting as a ‘plum to society.’” Critics terms this statement a “slippery slope argument” and “alarmist,” but this

prediction is now a reality in Belgium and the Netherlands where doctors kill disabled and mentally ill people and then harvest their organs with the now dead patient’s consent). This is justified y the argument that since these people want to die, society should benefit from their death. (National Review Online 1/5/15).
