“I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them,

My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide, Till their hearts be

satisfied. I will give My life to them. Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night I will go, Lord. If You lead me. I will hold, Your people in my heart. I will hold Your people in my

heart.”

Excerpt from song, “Here I am, Lord” by Dan Schutte

This song is a testimony of my service trip to Africa. It has always been a dream of mine to visit the beautiful “mother country” and this year that dream was made a reality. I was able to visit Kenya on a mission trip with other Salvationist colleagues. We did several projects, such as painting living quarters and a chapel, as well as taking part in the women’s Rally.

No picture or story could have prepared me for the depths of culture shock I would face. At first, I asked myself countless times, “Is this real?” “Can I really do this?” and in the first few days, I found myself in deep prayer for the Kenyan people and for myself and the rest of the team. Majority of the Kenyan people lack the basic necessities of life, including adequate housing, running water and

sanitation services. However, what stood out to me the most was that despite all the challenges and difficulties they seem to be facing, they never stop praising God, children and adults alike.

For this month’s newsletter I chose not to do my usual “Letter from the Administrator” but to share my experience and use this trip as a lesson. This trip has highlighted some fundamental principles that I think we should all live by:

1. Be grateful for everything you have. We are blessed no matter the circumstance and we tend to take a lot of thing in our lives for granted.

2. Help those in need. Each of us has something to offer. We can give our money, time, be a friend to someone who is sick or lonely, volunteer and pray.

3. Humility goes a long way. Strive to be humble. Humility is a key to being successful in life and a prerequisite to being a leader.

I was able to not only discover a new culture, but to accomplish something unforgettable. This trip was definitely a life-changing experience, one to remember for a lifetime.

An Experience to Remember!

This time of the year is one of the most expensive for the Home, as back to school supplies need to be acquired. Last year, these supplies amounted to over half a million dollars, excluding tuition. Therefore, it is imperative that the Home is able to come up with enough funding to offset the cost for tuition, uniforms, school shoes, backpacks, textbooks, notebooks and other stationery items. This is an important mission for the Home. The success of the children, starts with them having basic school supplies. THANKFULLY, with the help of generous donors we were able to pull through another year with little damage done to the funds available to the Home. The Administration of the Home, staff and most importantly the children would like to extend special thanks to:

• Daniel’s Group, The Covenant Church, from Lafayette, Indiana for purchasing of textbooks, backpacks and stationery items.

• The Salvation Army Mayfair Corps for purchasing school shoes, sneakers, school supplies as well as cosmetology equipment for the Windsor Skill’s Training Center.

• Lieutenant Colonel Kathleen Branch and Patricia Kukuc (Auntie Kathy and Auntie Pat) for purchasing various school supplies and other items.

• The Salvation Army Home League Claton Corps, London for their monetary donation that was used to purchase uniforms and other supplies.

Our back to school drive was a huge success. Currently we are focused on paying tuitions and the children will be all set for September morning!

BabyLand Playground! Nothing is more exciting to a child than a great playground. One of the latest projects for the Home is to build a safe playground for the toddlers.

Thanks to all to who made this possible, The Salvation Mayfair Corps for purchasing playground equipment and Auntie Kathie for purchasing the safe toddler swing seats.

The Adventures in Mission (AIM) team, organized by Joe Lynch conducted vacation bible school (VBS) with the children as well as a painting project for the Home. Daniel’s Group from Lafayette, Indiana is no stranger to the Home. They visited the Home again this summer to conduct VBS, took the children on field trips to Bluefield’s beach and YS falls. Aside from their VBS project they also provided back to school supplies for the children (more information on page 3). The Salvation Army Mayfair Corp, another friend of the Home visited the Home to conduct VBS and music classes with the children. The children were taught to play various instruments such as trombone, recorder, drum, piano and flute. They also had lots of other fun activities planned for the children such as beach trip to Font Hill Beach, campfire, games night, movies night, talent shows and more. In continuing their ongoing projects for the Home, they paid for the grill for the chapel, purchased back to school supplies and playground equipment. Thanks to these teams, the summer for the children was jam-packed with fun activities. We look forward to them visiting the Home again.

Sponsor A Child Today! Please support our development and sponsor a child. Currently, only 11 out of the 56 children at the Home are being sponsored. Help us raise that number, by sponsoring a child as well as pass on the information. Sponsoring a child will profoundly change the life of that child and your life as well. Give a child hope for the future and all eternity. Make a difference and sponsor a child today! The Vision of The Salvation Army Windsor Lodge Children’s Home is to provide a home and a Christian family setting for the homeless and the less fortunate children of our country. It is geared to give each child a balanced family life and to meet his every need—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It is also our intention to teach each child to live at peace with his or her neighbor and instill in them sense of pride and responsibility for God, country and self, thus equipping them for the challenges of the outside world.
