Adobe Girls in Tech and Theresa May
On 1 July 35 Year 10 students visited Adobe’s offices in Maidenhead to spend the day focusing on careers in technology. The event had been planned over the last few months and allowed students to have a tour of the state of the art premises where they recycle 97% of all waste produced and talks from key personnel from Adobe. The day was designed to be very interactive and fun with an aim of dispelling myths associated with working in the technology industry. When the initial idea was proposed Adobe had invited local MP Theresa May to come along. However, given the recent political news and the fact that she had announced her candidacy for Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister the day before, we suspected that she would be too busy to attend. We were therefore delighted that she took time to meet with the students and make an inspiring speech about opportunities for women in industry. All in all it was a great day and one students and staff will certainly remember it.
Dear Parents and Carers As you will have seen from the last few editions of the newsletter, this final term is extremely busy with many events and activities taking place. It is also typically the term when we look ahead to the next academic year and plan for the new students joining us in September. On Tuesday evening we welcomed the parents of Year 8 parents whose daughters will be starting Windsor Girls’ School in September. The school hall was full and it was really good to meet so many new faces and see some familiar ones with daughters already in the school. Two current Year 9s, Poppy Pope and Aliya Pritchard-Casey spoke during the evening and they should be very proud of themselves. The Year 11 Prom was also held on Tuesday evening and it was a wonderful event at the Legoland Hotel. The students looked very glamorous in their dresses and many arrived in style. It was a perfect end to their examinations and they can now enjoy the summer before returning to their studies in September. You will have seen that we have been working with a number of local businesses over the last year and we are pleased to have made key links with both Centrica and Adobe amongst others. Both companies have been involved in delivering activities for our students which have allowed the students to hear about real life situations and visit business premises. The thirty Year 10 students who visited Abobe in Maidenhead last Friday also had the additional excitement of seeing Theresa May who made an appearance to talk to the them about getting more girls involved in the technology industry. This week has also been particularly exciting because we have been performing our school musical production of Peter Pan to sell out audiences. The large cast and crew is made up of students from Windsor Girls’ School and Windsor Learning Partnership. Music and performance has been a real strength of the school this year, from Sweeney Todd, music concerts, GCSE and A level examination pieces to the current show, we are fortunate to be able to give the students so many opportunities. Now we look forward to Activities week next week where all our remaining year groups will be involved in enrichment activities which will be a positive way to end the year. Mrs Labrum
On 24 June 35 Year 10 students had the opportunity to attend the Festival of Education at Wellington College. The event is sponsored by the Daily Telegraph newspaper and was created to give students a range of information about possible careers and educational choices. During the day students were encouraged to get involved and try as many things as possible. These included dissecting a full pig, scuba diving and listening to talks. As you will see from the article in Saturday’s Telegraph, Isobel Jackson-Brench was quoted discussing her removing a pig’s eyeball. It was certainly not for the faint hearted.
